Nuremberg, Wolfgang Moritz Endters sel. Erben, 1724.. 12mo. (24), 398 pp. With an engr. frontispiece and 4 folding engr. plates. Period quarter vellum with decorative papered boards. Rebacked with 17th century vellum with decorative manuscript initials, also with a brown ink inscriptions on the first endpaper (dated 1751) and a couple of library stamps on half title and title, otherwise a very good copy.. First edition, second issue. - Rare work and one of the first books on Russian-Persian War of 1722-1723, published anonymously just a year after the end of the war and thoroughly describing the regions of the Southern Russia, the Caucasus and the Caspian Sea. The author describes the events of the Russian-Persian war which ended with a Russian victory and the subsequent Russian annexation of the Persian cities Derbent, Baku, Rasht and the northern Persian provinces of Shirvan, Gilyan and others. The author also describes all regions influenced by the war: the Volga River and all its major cities, including Kazan and Astrakhan (as the two main centers of the organization of the Persian campaign); the Caucasus: Georgia, Mingrelia, Dagestan and others; the Western Caspian Sea region and its largest cities Baku, Derbent and Shemakha. It's interesting that Baku inhabitants were described as sick and lethargic, due to the poor water that was contaminated by Naphtan (oil). The text describes the geography of the Caucasus Mountains, including Mount Elbrus, the manners and customs of the people, genealogy of local Georgian and Mingrelian princes and others. The book includes engraved portrait of Sultan Hossein who ruled Persia at the time, three copper engraved views of Derbent, Baku and Shemakha, the Baku view showing various images of mostly burning oil wells; and a copper engraved plate of the local costumes. From the library of the theologian Isidor Keppler (1715-92) with his ms. ownership (dated 1751) to the beginning of the text. - Nitsche-Stender 189.

Potsdam Bartholomäus Neumann 1724 - Erste Auflage. 16 x 10 cm. 4 Bll., 207 S., (52). Original Ledereinband mit reichlich floral. Rvg. u. roten Buchschnitt. Wenig berieb. u. bestoß. Rücken oben und unten mit kleiner Fehlstelle. Hübscher Rücken. Gundling, Jakob Paul Freiherr von(preußischer Adel u. Freiherr 1724) brandenburgischer Historiker, * 19.8.1673 Hersbruck (Mittelfranken), † 11.4.1731 Potsdam. (Biographieportal).; - Papier leicht gebräunt, Titelblatt wenig Randrissig, sonst fast fleckenfreies sauberes Exemplar. 1.100 gr. Original Ledereinband mit reichlich floral. A General Treatise of Moralityformed upon the Principles of Natural Reason only

sp;- London - Billigns8 by 5; [vi]cxliv[iv]462pp., 1724 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A traditionalist defence of God's benevolence and the innate distinction between good and evil. Richard Fiddes (1671-1725) was educated at Oxford, where he first earned his reputation as a hard drinker. He was nominally rector of Hailsham from 1696 but was allowed to be non-resident due to his 'ill health. ' He moved to London tobecome a man of letters, but he suffered from poverty and is rumoured to have been imprisoned for debt at least once. Fiddes was then sometime chaplain togarrison at Hull, though he was a high-churchman with apassionate dislike of nonconformists and alimited support for the Hanoverians, and so lost the chaplaincy eventually. In this traditionalist, conformist treatise, he argues that 'the distinction of moral Good and Evil depends on the Nature of Things;' not on any positivist command of God, nor the 'general consent of mankind. 'Condition: Externally bound in old panelled calf, with corners slightlyworn and label missing. Internally, hinges tender but remains very firmly bound. Armorial bookplate of W. Wynne and bookplate of Professor David Arthur Palin on front pastedown; signature of W. Wynne at top of title-page, some headpieces and two tailpieces; some damp stains;small marks in margin on pp. 190-192. Overall: VERY GOOD..

From the antiquarian library of Emeritus Professor David A. Palin of the University of Manchester (bookplate to front pastedown), collected over a period of almost forty years. Mosess Principia is the most famous of his books. In it, maintaining that the Hebrew language was divinely formed and used (cf. Part II, p. xxix) so that the correct reading of the unvocalised Hebrew text of the bible gives the true record of creation and of natural philosophy, he expounds the Genesis record of creation, claiming that every Word, nay every Letter here, is of the utmost Importance, nothing deficient, nor nothing superfluous (Part II, p. 354). (From the library catalogue of David Palin). Condition: In a contemporary calf binding. Externally, rather worn, with loss to the extremities, marks to the boards, and bumping. Joints are tender, with boards held by the cords only. Internally, textblock loosening in places. Ink inscription to front pastedown, with ink signature to recto of front free-endpaper. Pages are bright, though with the occasional patch of foxing and some handling marks. Overall: GOOD..

The Standing Use of the Scripture,to all the Purposes of a Divine Revelation. In Several Sermons on Rom.xv.4. and Col.iii.16

London - Ward, and Chaldner8 by 5; [vi]292pp., 1724 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. An intriguing exploration of the question of Biblical records and their reliability. Scarce First EditionJohn Guyse (c1677-1761) was educated at dissenting schools, before taking an independent congregation at Hertford in 1705. By 1719 he was senior minister at New Broad Street in London, and a leading nonconformist agitator. In Standing Use of the Scripture, Guyse describes the Bible as 'a noble View of Natural and Revealed Religion in all their Glories and shew us nobler Principles and Ends and Assistances for the Observation of them, that natural Light could suggest. ' He admits the problem of reliability in Biblical records, but after exploring thematter concludes that the scripture is ultimately sound because at the very least God will have manipulated Biblican historians to ensure accuracy - Christ is the Author of the Scripture. It was writ by the Inspiration of his Spirit, and bears the Stamp of his Authority. Condition: Externally very smart - recently rebound in brown cloth with contrasting label. Internally, very firmly bound with new front and endpapers and bookplate of Professor David Arthur Pailin to front Pastedown. Foxed and dusty; pencil signature and comment on previous ownership on blank end papers; headpieces and tailpieces; errata on p. [vi]; notice of books on p. 292; large amount of text underlined in old ink. Overall: GOOD..

Sonates a Violon Seul, & Basse-Continüe... Livre Ier

Paris: L'Auteur... Boivin... Le Clerc. 1724. 1f. (title) 1f. (privilege), 55 pp.; blanks at pp. [13], [23], [35] and [47]. Engraved. Very slightly browned; slight soiling to edges. Lesure p. 521. BUC p. 868. RISM Q42, QQ42 (one copy only recorded in the U.S.). An attractive copy of this elegantly printed collection of 10 violin sonatas. "[Quentin] was a violinist at the Paris Opéra in 1718, and in 1738 he played the viola in the ‘grand choeur’... His solo violin sonatas generally consist of four or five alternating slow and fast movements. The trio sonatas are mostly in three or four movements; the later ones have solo indications, suggesting the possibility of orchestral performance. Both genres are characterized by a systematic use of doubles. There are some particularly distinctive dance movements in lively triple time, labelled ‘Allemande’ or ‘Contredanse’, which appear to be the ancestors of the modern waltz. In fast movements Quentin showed a penchant for da capo markings, which produce ternary structures. Technically, his sonatas are moderately difficult, with varied and precisely indicated bowing, and triple and quadruple stops as well as fluid passages in double stops. His use of dynamic markings is careful, and the term ‘tendrement’ is often appended to arias and gavottes. Despite a certain rhythmic monotony, Quentin's music shows melodic inventiveness and unusually rich harmonies." Laurel Fay in Grove online& & Bound with: & Marc, Thomas fl. Paris ca. 1720- 1735& Suite de Pieces de Dessus et de Pardessus de Viole et trois Sonates, avec les Basses Continüe, qui se peuvent joüer sur la Viola, la Flûte traversiere et autres Instrumens... (explanatory text regarding the pardessus), 41, [i] (privilege); blanks at pp. [13] and [22]. Uniform slight browning throughout. A very good copy overall. The only known published music by this composer. Very rare. Lesure p. 413. BUC p. 647. RISM M416 (3 copies only, none recorded in North American libraries). Marc, a French viol player, "taught the pardessus de viole to Mlle de la Roche-sur-Yon, to whom he dedicated a book of pieces entitled Suitte de pièces de dessus et de pardessus de viole et trois sonates avec les basses continües (Paris, 1724), the first collection of music specifically for the six-string pardessus de viole. In his suite of 21 pieces, quick movements take precedence, particularly the minuet, gavotte and rondeau, several of which have brilliant doubles. The melodic and rhythmic style of the three sonatas is italianate (especially the Vivement of no.3, and the courantes and gigues), but the movements retain a French character in ornamentation and title." Mary Cyr in Grove online. The pardessus de viole, invented ca. 1700, is the smallest and highest-pitched member of the viol family of instruments. It was played almost exclusively by women, and was always a melody instrument. & & Bound with: & Mascitti, Michele 1663 or 1664- 1760& [Op. 7]. This, the first edition edited by Barbeyrac, is considered far the best and most importent translation of Grotius' masterpiece "On the Law of War and peace", first issued in Latin in 1625 and exposing for the first time the principles of International Law.This was the first attempt to lay down a principle of right, and abasis for the society and government, outside Church and Scripture. The distinction between law or morality is not clearly made, but Grotius's principle of an immutable law, which God can no more alter than a mathematical axiom, was the first expression of the 'droit nature', the natural law which exercised the great political theorists of the eighteenth century, and is the foundation of modern international law." Sex Julii Frontini de aquaeductibus urbis Romae commentarius antiquae fidei restitutus, atque explicatus, opera et studio Joannis Poleni

Patavi Apud Joannem Manfré, 1724. FIRST EDITION. 4to, 262 x 183 mms, pp. [viii], 323, 296 [297 "Series Tabularum," 298 blank, 299 colophon, 300 blank], 15 full-page engraved plates and maps, 19th century calf, Devonshire arms in gilt on each cover, all edges, morocco label, Chatsworth Library bookplate on front paste-down end-paper. A fine copy. Frontinus (c. 35 - 104) was an early water engineer and aqueduct construction. Asit K. Biswas, in his article on Frontinus, concludes, "Most of our knowledge of water supply systems of this period comes from Frontinus. Though not familiar with water supply systems when he was initially appointed as the curator aquarum, he made a determined attempt to find out the state of knowledge prevailing at that time - by collecting "all that I could gather as bearing on the subject matter". He systematically organized and codified the knowledge. The results of his analysis and synthesis served, as he had originally intended, for his "own instruction and as a guide" and for the benefit of his successors. Equally, it has also become a primary source of information on the technology and practice of urban water supply systems prevailing at that time" "Ancient Urban Water Supply Systems," in GeoJournal (1985). The editor of this volume, Giovanni Poleni (1683 - 1761) was an expert hydrogapher and his redaction of Frontius' text is, in effect, the first modern explanation of the use of aqueducts for urban water supply. R. H. Rodgers is his edition and translation of De Aquaeductu Urbis Romae records that the text survives in a single manuscript, in the abbey library at Monte Cassino. WorldCat seems not to list any copies of this edition, but there is a copy at Princeton.

        Dancing Devils

      A. Bettesworth, London 1724 - Ward, Edward, 1667-1731. Dancing devils, or, The roaring dragon: a dumb farce, as it was lately acted at both houses, but particularly at one, with unaccountable success (London: Printed and sold by A. Bettesworth . J. Bately . J. Brotherton . , 1724). This is the original Tract without covers in a very fine condition. Its Rare for Tracts to survive from the 18th. Century. It has 68 pages and is very clean. it’s the last copy in private hands. I offer this very Rare Tract ;- Edward Ned Ward (1667-1731) Edward Ward became a prolific and popular writer during the era of British settlement of the Caribbean. Born in England, Ward eventually learned how to earn a living by writing. He traveled to Port Royal, Jamaica, and returned the following year to publish A Trip to Jamaica (1698), a parody of the promotional tracts often used to recruit settlers to the Americas. His popular account, originally published anonymously, appeared in at least seven editions, and Ward's future publications bore his name, followed by the inscription, By the Author of A Trip To Jamaica. The following year, he drew upon the success of A Trip to Jamaica, by publishing A Trip to New England (1699). Scholars who have studied Ward agree that Ward's claim to have traveled to New England is dubious. He probably drew his materials primarily from John Josselyn's accounts of his 1638 and 1663 voyages to that area. Ward built upon and exaggerated Josselyn's description of the people, customs and laws, climate, and natural life of New England. Ward remained a popular and prolific journalist throughout the first decade of the eighteenth-century. He died in Fulwood's Rents in 1731. Ward's A Trip to Jamaica (1698) is printed in Early American Writings, Gen. Ed. Carla Mulford, Assoc. Eds. Angela Vietto and Amy E. Winans (Oxford University Press, 2001). A Trip to New England (1699) is presented in its entirety below. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
