[Pirates of the Caribbean]
London, H. M. for T. Norris, R. Gosling and H. Meere, [1722]. 8vo. (2), 348, (6), 44 pp. Contemporary full mottled calf with gilt spine (hinges weakened, binding professionally restored and lacquered). All edges sprinkled red. Rare news journal containing the lengthiest entry on pirates known in any contemporary periodical, spanning eleven closely printed pages (pp. 246-256) that went on to be cited in numerous piracy studies. The relevant section begins with a report from Jamaica that the pirates have been so active that they now number about 1500. There is a letter from Andrew Kingston detailing the loss of his ship to John Roberts (also known as Bartholomew Roberts, and later "Black Bart") about four miles from Antigua, followed by proclamations and speeches of Nicholas Lawes, Governor of Jamaica, and an attempt by him to collect recompense from the alcaldes of Trinidad in Cuba ("I find the Port of Trinidado a Receptacle to Villains of all Nations"). The English governor also demanded that the two pirates Nicholas Brown and Christopher Winter be handed over, which was refused - on the grounds that they had been baptized in the Catholic faith. Pages 253-256 contain an account by Captain Mackra who lost his ship Cassandra to pirates in the East Indies "between the coasts of Arabia and Malabar", and the unfortunate seaman's negotiations with the pirates' "chief Captain", the notorious Edward England. - The "Historical Register" was a quarterly news periodical originally issued to the clients of London's Sun Fire insurance. First printed in 1716, it ceased publication with n … [Click Below for Full Description]

Claude-Charles Le Roy de la Potherie, also called Bacqueville de la Potherie, arrived in New France in 1698 as comptroller of the Marine and of the fortifications in Canada. His work, published some twenty years before Charlevoix's great history, provides an eyewitness account and historical record of the region. "Bacqueville's account is in the form of letters, one of them describing the Cartier expedition and summarizing the next century and a half, but the history is mostly of the administrations of Frontenac, De la Barre, and Denonville, and as such is a contemporary account of that great period. The work contains much on the relations of New France with the English colonies and with the Indians" - Streeter. The first volume includes a detailed account of the capture of Fort Nelson. "His letters on the governments of Quebec, Trois-Rivieres, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Daniel Defoe
W Chetwood and T Edling. One of Defoe's most famous works, second only to Robinson Crusoe, Moll Flanders is a first-person picaresque novel purportedly written by the heroine herself. Very scarce. Only two copies held in UK collections, one in the British Library, the other at Trinity College Cambridge. Collated: Lacking Title page but consistent with the first edition of 1722 and the only edition to have this pagination. A facsimile title page can be obtained if required. Title page for this edition states 1721, but the work was actually published in January of 1722. With the blank leaf to A8, almost always removed in rebinding. (Moore 446, ESTC T70314) In a contemporary binding. Title page likely removed due to the notoriety of the work. Moll Flanders was written and published after Defoe had become a recognised and successful novelist. Though the work was originally published as if it were an autobiography, it was attributed to Defoe after his death. Partially based on the life of notorious London criminal Moll King, whom Defoe personally met in Newgate prison, Moll Flanders was a sensational novel in which the heroine manages to retain the sympathy of the reader despite her various trials and tribulations and her questionable morality. An important work, now part of the literary canon and key in the development of the novel and an insight into social and cultural issues of the 17th and 18th century, particularly crime and punishment and the position of women in society. In original full calf binding. Externally, sound with rubbing. Bumping to extremities and loss to lea … [Click Below for Full Description]

Abraham Cowley, on the other hand, praised the author and his work in an ode to the Royal Society which prefixes the main work. Further, Dr. Samuel Johnson declared it "one of the few books which selection of sentiment and elegance of diction have been able to preserve, though written upon a subject flux and transitory." - DNB. / ". . . first published in 1667. Its 438 pages constitute a large and puzzling work on an institution barely seven years old when the book appeared. Since its concerns and their implications touched all major aspects of contemporary affairs, not least religion, the infant Royal Society quickly became involved in controversy and detraction, against which even the good fortune of royal patronage proved insufficient. . .It … [Click Below for Full Description]

EUSTACHIO Bartolomeo.
[Click Below for Full Description]

Ricard, Jean Pierre.
Amsterdam, N. Etienne Lucas, 1722. 4to. XII (2), 762, (12) pp. With a fine folding engraving lacking in most copies. Contemporary full calf with giltstamped label to richly gilt spine. Edges sprinkled red. First edition thus. As the title reveals, the book is based on the famous handbook for merchants published by Jacques Le Moine de l'Espine (d. 1696), a French protestant refugee who established himself in Amsterdam around 1679 as a merchant and print dealer. His book became the most widely used work of its kind in Amsterdam during the 18th century. The first edition appeared in 1694, and a great number of ever-expanding editions followed, edited by Isaac le Long after the death of the original author and from 1727 onwards augmented by a second volume. The final edition, which ran to four volumes, appeared in 1801/02. Simultaneously with the first Dutch edition, Le Moine published a French edition, a volume of a mere 206 pages. A second French edition of 388 pages was published in 1710: while the name of Le Moine de l'Espine appeared on the title, it was edited by an anonymous author with the help of Jacques Mondoteguy. The present volume only states that it is "based upon the work of Le Moine". Indeed, it is a much revised and largely expanded edition and more systematically arranged. Ricard established himself in Amsterdam as a merchant in 1705, and though little is known about his life, his work demonstrates that he was experienced in various branches of commerce. The engraving, which appears to be lacking from all other copies, shows the Amsterdam City Hall, indicating … [Click Below for Full Description]

MONTPENSIER (duchesse de) SEGRAIS (Jean-Renaud de)
Bel exemplaire Gay III 993.

It is written in English and the author made use, during the preparation of his work, of Samuel Dale's Pharmacologia seu manuductio ad materiam medicam, first published in 1693. It appears from his preface that Miller compiled his herbal for the use of apothecaries in order to give them a better botanical knowledge of the plants they used in making up medical prescriptions, and to save them from 'the gross impositions frequently practised by the common herb-folks' who made 'no scruple of selling one thing for another, very often directly contrary to the intention of the prescriber'.
