Edward Ward
ont> Not Stated: London, 1722. Book. The first edition of Edward Ward's satirical attack on his local parish vestry, written after his popular 'London Spy' periodical. A scarce work. The first edition of this work. Edward Ward was best known for his 'London Spy', a periodical about London life, featuring adventures from people of various origins exploring London. His exploration of London in these texts included the seedier side of life, like prostitution, burglary, and general felonies. He was often involved in political and religious controversy with his satirical texts, including 'Ecclesia et Factio' and 'Hudibra Redivivus'. He was a high-church Tory who launched several attacks on the Whigs and also the queen on failing to support the Tories in parliament. 'The Parish Gutt'lers' is an attack on closed or select vestry, written late in Ward's career, with the publication resulting in more controversy, as he had already attacked the church in his previous writings. Prior to this work, Ward had already been taken into custody under charges of libel from as early as 1706. For his famous 'Hudibras Redivivus' he was fined 40 marks and had to stand twice for one hour in the pillory. Despite this he continued to write his satirical pamphlets with political agendas aimed at the church and parliament. Collated, complete. Condition: Disbound, missing the boards, with evidence of having been previously bound. Externally, smart with a few marks to the title page and rear wrap. Internally, firmly bound. Light age toning to the page edges, with the odd handling mark throughout. Overal … [Click Below for Full Description]

JUSTIN, Martyr
Londini: Impensis Richardi Sare, 1722. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "We used to hate and destroy one another and refused to associate with people of another race or country. Now, because of Christ, we live together with such people and pray for our enemies." ― Justin Martyr A rare 1722 edition of the collected works of Saint Justin Martyr, one of the greatest figures of Christian apologetics. A Latin translation of Justin's works did not appear until 1554, though this edition features both the original Greek and the Latin translation. Justin's First Apology is his most well-known work which was written to defend morality of Christian living, and provide philosophical arguments to convince Emperor Antoninus to abandon his persecutions. "Dialogues with Trypho" was a document to show that Christianity is the law by which all men should live and to prove though Scripture, that Jesus is the Jewish Messiah.

HUYGENS, Christiaan
Printed for James Knapton, at the Crown in St. Paul's Church-Yard, London, 1722. 8vo (166 x 108 mm). vi, 162 pp., title with double-rule border, 5 folding engraved plates. Contemporary sheep, some gilt ruling of boards and spine (leather over boards heavily wormed and rubbed resulting in substantial loss (cardboard showing), front pastedown mostly gone, binding quite tight, hinges holding firm). Text only little browned, title slightly dust-soiled, outer margins of one plate somewhat frayed and soiled, some minor marginal dust-soiling elsewhere, but generally a crisp and clean copy internally. Provenance: W. Parkinson, Gent. / Norwich (large armorial bookplate pasted to first free endpaper). ---- DSB VI, p.611; Wing H3859 (for 1st English edition). SECOND EDITION IN ENGLISH, corrected and enlarged (first published in Latin in 1698 under the title Cosmotheoros). In this work, Huygens argued that "in the Copernican world system . . . the Earth holds no privileged position among the other planets. It would therefore be unreasonable to suppose that life should be restricted to the earth alone . . . Huygens came to the conclusion that, in all probablilty, the plant and animal worlds of other planets are very like those of the earth" (DSB). The fascination with what lies beyond the boundaries of our world have driven philosophy, religion and science across the centuries. Huygens was no exception. He further speculated that the moons of other planets were like ours and stated that the Moon could have no atmosphere of its own. The work has been placed in the company of Wilkins, God … [Click Below for Full Description]

Very good condition, no foxing, no soiling. Bright clean pages. Includes large fold out map. Complete copy only lacking page following map. Description: The 1722 Cambridge edition of Bede's Ecclesiastical History is credited to John Smith, a priest attached to Durham Cathedral, but it would not have come to press if not for the work of Smith's son, George, who completed the work after his father's death in 1715. Smith's edition in 1722 marked a new era in the history of the book. It was the first critical edition, the text being based on the Moore MS. For the student of Bede this admirable book is of the highest value. Besides the most minute and accurate work on the text, it contains a copious and interesting commentary and the fullest references to the various sources upon which the editor has drawn. This work includes a translation of the "Ecclesiastical History" in the Anglo-Saxon version, executed either by Alfred himself or under his immediate supervision. Using the MS of Moore, one of the earliest extant versions of the text, donated by Geo … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

B. Cowse, London, 1722. FIRST EDITION. 8vo., 122pp.; Bound in full leather, with paneled spine, red label, gilt lettering; some shelfwear, including scuffing, scratches, peeling to corners; boards slightly shaken; small sticker with name on front pastedown; first two endpapers tissue paper; lacking map; very mild waving to pages. Not Ex-Lib. RARE FIRST EDITION. The present work describes the first British exploration of the Mississippi Valley and gives the first English account of Louisiana. It is primarily an account of the Valley and only secondarily an account of Carolina, the area comprising present-day North and South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Daniel Coxe's father, physician to King Charles II and Queen Anne, was granted the land described in this volume. The author inherited these claims to grants and explored the region himself. These firsthand accounts had considerable success, being reprinted twice within five years. S.l.n.d. (1722). in-folio. 1f.

I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Willem Sewel was a 17th-century Dutch Quaker who is most-known for his historical perspective on the Quakers. This work was a collection of essays and reports over the course of 25 years that was finally published in 1717. This book gives Sewel's first-hand accounts with important Quaker leaders including such as William Penn and George Fox. Other curious topics include descriptions of Turks and Algerian pirates, naval excursions of Thomas Lurting, and William Penn's establishment of Pennsylvania. This 1722 first edition was dedicated to George I of England and translated by Sewel from his own 1717 Dutch edition. [Attributes: First Edition]
