LE BRETON, Jean
Claude Jombert, Paris, 1722. [Click Below for Full Description]

Vertot, Abbe De; John Henley
London: for W. Taylor, 1722. First Edition. Octavo. Volume I: 356 pages, Volume 2: 243 pages. The rare study by the abbe De Vertot who challenged the ancient Breton legends which he said were based on later historians. The ancient legends of Merlin, King Arthur and the Knights of the Roundtable are all challenged. Modern French historians from Michelet, Thierry and Mignet have challened but never quite gotten beyond his insights into ancient Gaul and its history. These volumes printed in a small print run became scarce as early as 1816 when two rare booksellers noted they now had copies in their catalog. The 1910 Green auction had them. One of the most scarce of the early 18th century histories of Brittany. OCLC notes it was translated from the French but printed at Paris and in the same year distributed by W. Taylor a London publisher with a preface by John Henley to Sir Peter King, the Chief Justice, explaining the reason for this unique and to many a troubling book. Bound in full calf, handsomely rebacked to style, olive green leather label gilt, corners worn through, very early small bookplate without name. Very nice wide margined copy.

Gichtel, Johann Georg.
[Click Below for Full Description]

BARKER, Captain John
c1722.. Original manuscript chart, pen and black ink with colour wash, ‘received the 10th July 1723 with a Duplicate of Cap: Phenny's Letter of 2d March 1722/3' at the lower right corner, ‘Bahamas Harbour of Providence' at upper right corner to verso, pencilled gridlines, watermarked Strassburg lily within a crowned shield with ‘WR' terminal, old folds. The map appears to be the manuscript source for several well-known printed maps, including those of Herman Moll, 1729, and Henry Popple, 1733 (see item 31). We have been unable to trace any printed or manuscript work that pre-dates the present example. History of the Bahamas The first settlers Since their discovery on 12 October 1492 by Christopher Columbus, the Bahamas were claimed, and largely ignored, by Spain. The first European settlers were the Company of the Eleutheran Adventurers, who were a group of English Puritans and religious Independents who left Bermuda to settle on the island of Eleuthera between 1646 and 1648. The group was led by William Sayle, Governor of Bermuda, and had been expelled from Bermuda for their failure to swear allegiance to the Crown, and were searching for a place in which they could freely practice their faith. This group represented the first concerted European effort to colonize the Bahamas. Sayle later became the first governor of colonial South Carolina from 1670–71. In 1670, King Charles II gave the Bahamas to the Lords Proprietors of Carolina, who, like the Spanish before them, largely left the islands alone, with the settlement of Charles-town on New Providence, reporting a popu … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Pirates of the Caribbean]
London, H. M. for T. Norris, R. Gosling and H. Meere, [1722]. 8vo. (2), 348, (6), 44 pp. Contemporary full mottled calf with gilt spine (hinges weakened, binding professionally restored and lacquered). All edges sprinkled red. Rare news journal containing the lengthiest entry on pirates known in any contemporary periodical, spanning eleven closely printed pages (pp. 246-256) that went on to be cited in numerous piracy studies. The relevant section begins with a report from Jamaica that the pirates have been so active that they now number about 1500. There is a letter from Andrew Kingston detailing the loss of his ship to John Roberts (also known as Bartholomew Roberts, and later "Black Bart") about four miles from Antigua, followed by proclamations and speeches of Nicholas Lawes, Governor of Jamaica, and an attempt by him to collect recompense from the alcaldes of Trinidad in Cuba ("I find the Port of Trinidado a Receptacle to Villains of all Nations"). The English governor also demanded that the two pirates Nicholas Brown and Christopher Winter be handed over, which was refused - on the grounds that they had been baptized in the Catholic faith. Pages 253-256 contain an account by Captain Mackra who lost his ship Cassandra to pirates in the East Indies "between the coasts of Arabia and Malabar", and the unfortunate seaman's negotiations with the pirates' "chief Captain", the notorious Edward England. - The "Historical Register" was a quarterly news periodical originally issued to the clients of London's Sun Fire insurance. First printed in 1716, it ceased publication with n … [Click Below for Full Description]

Very good. Rare first edition of an important illustrated contemporary history of the Indian nations in Canada and their relations with the French, including among the earliest printed views in Canada. Claude-Charles Le Roy de la Potherie, also called Bacqueville de la Potherie, arrived in New France in 1698 as comptroller of the Marine and of the fortifications in Canada. His work, published some twenty years before Charlevoix's great history, provides an eyewitness account and historical record of the region. "Bacqueville's account is in the form of letters, one of them describing the Cartier expedition and summarizing the next century and a half, but the history is mostly of the administrations of Frontenac, De la Barre, and Denonville, and as such is a contemporary account of that great period. The work contains much on the relations of New France with the English colonies and with the Indians" - Streeter. The first volume includes a detailed account of the capture of Fort Nelson. Daniel Defoe
W Chetwood and T Edling. One of Defoe's most famous works, second only to Robinson Crusoe, Moll Flanders is a first-person picaresque novel purportedly written by the heroine herself. Very scarce. Only two copies held in UK collections, one in the British Library, the other at Trinity College Cambridge. Collated: Lacking Title page but consistent with the first edition of 1722 and the only edition to have this pagination. A facsimile title page can be obtained if required. Title page for this edition states 1721, but the work was actually published in January of 1722. With the blank leaf to A8, almost always removed in rebinding. (Moore 446, ESTC T70314) In a contemporary binding. Title page likely removed due to the notoriety of the work. Moll Flanders was written and published after Defoe had become a recognised and successful novelist. Though the work was originally published as if it were an autobiography, it was attributed to Defoe after his death. Partially based on the life of notorious London criminal Moll King, whom Defoe personally met in Newgate prison, Moll Flanders was a sensational novel in which the heroine manages to retain the sympathy of the reader despite her various trials and tribulations and her questionable morality. An important work, now part of the literary canon and key in the development of the novel and an insight into social and cultural issues of the 17th and 18th century, particularly crime and punishment and the position of women in society. In original full calf binding. Externally, sound with rubbing. Bumping to extremities and loss to lea … [Click Below for Full Description]
