[HOLBERG, LUDVIG].
Uden trykkerangivelse, [København] 1722. 8vo. Upagineret (120) sider. Ehrencron-Müller I,79. Paul Johansen 6,2.

Anders Celsius. WALLIN (Georgio)
Lipsiae (Leipzig) 1722 - Livre ancien (8), 110 p., (1). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Stevens, John
3 vols. London: Tho. Taylor [etc.], 1722-23. 3 vols. in 2, folio, (14), 538, (2, index); 19 plates, some folding: (4), 279; 31 plates, some folding: [appendix] 388, (4, index)pp. Old calf somewhat battered but sound. First edition of Stevens?s supplement to Dugdale?s Monasticon Anglicanum. DNB notes of Stevens: ?His abridgement in English of Dugdale's Monasticon Anglicanum (1718) was followed by a two-volume supplement (1722?"3), containing some 500 additional monastic charters in English translation. It improved on Dugdale by covering the mendicant orders and including biographical accounts of monastic writers, and for the first time it treated pre- and post-Reformation monastic history as a continuum. Stevens did not attempt the task of historical interpretation (partly to avoid the charge of Catholic bias), and his presentation of the documents in English translation rather than in the original Latin did not please the academic purists (such as Thomas Hearne), but these criticisms are outweighed by the scale of his single-handed achievement as a collector of scattered material who opened up the monastic past to a non-professional readership.?

Ldr.-Bd. der Zeit mit Rückenschild und Rückenvergoldung.. Zweite Ausgabe. - Vgl. Garrison-Morton 391 (für Erstausgabe 1714): "A romantic history attaches to this fine collection of plates, drawn by Eustachius himself and completed in 1552. They remained unprinted and forgotten in the Vatican Library until discovered in the early 18th century and were then presented by Pope Clement XI to his physician, Giovanni Maria Lancisi. The latter published them in 1714 together with his own notes. These copperplates are more accurate than the work of Vesalius. Singer was of the opinion that had they appeared in 1552 Eustachius would have ranked with Vesalius as one of the founders of modern anatomy. He discovered the Eustachian tube, the thoracic duct, the adrenals and the abducens nerve, and gave the first accurate description of the uterus. He also described the cochlea, the muscles of the throat and the origin of the optic nerves." Bartolomeo Eustachi, lat. [Click Below for Full Description]

Paris: Chez l'Auteur, 1722. Copper-engraved map, period hand colouring in outline. First state of De l'Isle's influential map of the western hemisphere. This fine map is one of three maps of North America produced and published by De l'Isle which would become prototypes for much of the 18th century. This map "depicts North and South America, the west coast taken north to Cap Mendocin and Cap Blanc with a note, 'Entree decouverte par Martin d'Aguilar'" (Tooley). The present copy is an example of the first state of the map; the map would be re-issued by Buache circa 1745 with a floral garland around the cartouche. Pitois, Giuseppe Aureglio
Torino: Reycends & Guiberts. (c. 1722). oblong folio, contemporary blue wrappers. 26 engraved leaves (of 28).. Text in Italian. A manual by Italian writing master Pitois. One of a number of his works produced in Turin by Reycends Brothers and the book/mapseller firm Guibert. At the beginning of the 18th century, the Rome-Venice hegemony in penmanship was waning, due to growing French influence in calligraphy. This slant towards French taste is revealed in the "Moderno" of the title, and the fact that most of the twenty-six leaves are marked as engraved in Paris by artist Claude-Auguste de Berey. From 1690 to 1730 de Berey, or Berey, engraved the plates for several well-known French works on calligraphy. All the firm's writing manuals printed at this time were engraved in Paris (Barker, p. 147). Two leaves lacking. Soiled, margins chipped, old fold at center.
