TERASHIMA, Ryoan.
Osaka 1722, Shurin. Brown stiff wrs., 4 of 5 vols., wanting vol. 4, else complete, ca 16 x 22.6 cm., 20+28+41+38 double- folded leaves, woodblock printed on hand-made mulberry paper covers scuffed, minor old worming, contents stable. RARE ! A very early work, with 2 illustrations. This work warns and guards against improper use of moxabustion [cautery] which is the burning of mugwort, or known as artemisia vulgaris latifolia. This herb is burned directly on top of the skin, but also on top of thin slabs of garlic, which in turn are placed on top of the proper [acupuncture] "points" for maximum therapeutic affect. This kind of therapy was derived from ancient Chinese medical practice, heating of the acupuncture "points" was supposed to increase blood flow to the affected areas & thus cause a healing affect. It was also believed that evil spirits imprisoned within the body would be released by the "opening of the channel" allowing its escape. The same logic applied to the insertion of needles in these "points." This work advised against certain theories of angiology & splanchnology which postulated some "twelve main channels" or "ducts." Among the 365 "points" there were many to be avoided. Here in this valuable work points out the list to be avoided by the physician or practitioner. It also outlines information on the use and making of prescriptions. THE AUTHOR: Terashima Ryoan was also the editor of the famous medical treatise: WAKAN SAN SAI ZUE in some 104 volumes. THE SET: We have volumes 1,2,3,5, of the 5 volume set only, sold "as is" lacking volume 4. CONDITON: … [Click Below for Full Description]

Blackamore, A. [Joseph Bingham]
Printed for E. Bell, J. Darby, A. Bettesworth, F. Fayram, F. Pemberton, F. Hooke, C. Rivington, F. Clay, F. Batley, and E. Symon, 1722. London: Printed for E. Bell, J. Darby, A. Bettesworth, F. Fayram, F. Pemberton, F. Hooke, C. Rivington, F. Clay, F. Batley, and E. Symon, 1722. Abridged edition. Hardcover. g. Octavo. [14], 466, [8], 536pp. Modern vellum spines over contemporary leather boards tooled in blind. Gold lettering on spines. Raised bands. Decorative head-, tailpieces and initials. Abridged edition in two volumes of Joseph Bingham's extensive work entitled "Origines Ecclesiasticae, or Antiquities of the Christian Church," the first volume of which appeared in 1708 and the tenth and last in 1722. His design, learnedly, exhaustively and impartially executed, was to give such a methodical account of the antiquities of the Christian Church as others have done of the Greek and Roman and Jewish antiquities, by reducing the ancient customs, usages and practices of the church under certain proper heads, whereby the reader may take a view at once of any particular usage or custom of Christians for four or five centuries. The first volume is dedicated to the 'Venerable Society for Propagating the Gospel in Foreign Parts,' and the second to Sir Richard Blackmore. Moderate rubbing on bindings. Modern endpapers. Minor browning throughout. Bindings and interior in overall good condition.

Le Grand, Marc-Antoine):
O. O., 1722. - 56 S. Rückenbroschur. 4°. Fromm IV, 14479; Nicht bei Huelke-Etzler. - Erste deutsche Ausgabe. - Louis Dominique Cartouche (eigentlich Garthausen; geb. [Attributes: First Edition]

Gravina Gian Vincenzo (1664-1718)
Alberti, Michael Behrisch, Christian Gottfried
Halle, Magdeburg, Johann Christan Hendel, 1722, 4, (2), 38, feiner Pappband. Erste und wohl einzige Ausgabe der "Dissertatio inauguralis medica, De Phantasiae usu, lusu et abusu in medicina, quam... in illustri Academia Fridericiana... Praeside... Michaele Alberti... XXIX. Aug. 1722... publicae ventilationi submittit, Christianus Gottofredus Behrisch, Desdensis." In solchen Fällen, so kla … [Click Below for Full Description]

PALINGENIUS.
Rotterdam (Rotterodami), Apud Joannem Hofhout, 1722. 8vo. XVI (including frontispiece),407;(47 index) p. Vellum 15.5 cm (Details: 5 thongs laced through the joints. Red morocco shield on the back. The frontispiece, designed and executed by Jan Goeree, depicts an allegorical scene, which may refer passages in the second and sixth book of the 'Zodiacus Vitae', called Taurus and Virgo. It shows a laureated woman, Poetry, who shakes hands with death, and at the same time clutches in her left arm a bust of the virtuous goddess of wisdom Athena. Her feet rest on a big bag of gold and a scepter. Next to her stands a winged putto, scourge at hand, who reveals gold and other treasures of the church that lay hidden below a piece of cloth. Above them, on a monument, the wellknown scene of Hercules on the crossroads, where he meets two women, personifications of Virtue and Vice. They both advice Hercules to follow the road they show him. Virtue, depicted here as Athena, points at a narrow rocky and steep path at the end of which he will find a reward. Vice, stripped to the waist, offers Hercules pleasure, crowns and wealth; she points at the easy road. The message is clear, the highest good can not be found in wealth and profane goods but in virtue combined with wisdom. At the end of the sixth book, Virgo, the poet concludes, having considered the endless miseries of humankind, that we should not fear death, but that we must ambrace her/him as a safe haven. The woodcut printer's mark shows the intertwined initials of the publisher Johannes Hofhout. The title is printed in red and black … [Click Below for Full Description]

SPRAT, Thomas.
London: J. Knapton and J. Walthoe. 1722. Third Corrected Edition. Quarto. pp. 438. With two fold-out engraved plates. Tastefully respined, with original tooled calf leather boards. Corners heavily worn, and boards generally worn and scratched. The recent re-binding, however, is smart without being too obvious, and encloses a text block in excellent condition. 'The first part wholly treats of the State of the Ancient Philosophy; and the third chiefly contains a Defence and Recommendation of experimental knowledge in general.' This intriguing work is prefaced with a dedication to the king, as well as a poem addressed to Philosophy, and contains articles such as 'A Proposal for Making Wine', and 'General Observations Upon Dying.'.
