NEWTON, [Isaac]
Montalant, 1722. Finely printed with decorative woodcut headpiece, initials, and engraved chapter vignettes depicting author's optical experiments (white on black background - - see sketch of vignette in Guerlac, pp. 158 and on dust jacket of his book). With 12 folding engraved plates. Full vellum; faint water stains on the blank fore - edge of a few leaves. Bookplate of Arnold Thackray as well as a very interesting contemporary wax armorial stamp used as a bookplate. An especially nice, crisp copy, important for its illustrations and typographical execution. This second French edition is greatly superior to the first Amsterdam edition of 1720 (which was published in 12mo.) not only textually but for its beauty. According to Guerlac, it is the handsomest edition of the Opticks printed in Newton's lifetime, or indeed later. This edition, quite rare, was edited by Pierre Varignon, and included changes proposed by de Moivre and authorized by Newton.

Partington, III, p. 64 ; DSB, XI, p 328 ; Bibliotheca Mechanica, pages 273-74

O. O., 1722.. Mit gest. Titelvign. 1 Bl., 69 S. Rückenbroschur. 4°. VD18 14491877-001; vgl. Hayn-Got. I, 552 u. Huelke-E. 1248 (beide nur 4. A. 1723). - Die Titelvignette mit einem Hüftbild Cartouches. - Louis Dominique Cartouche (eigentlich Garthausen; geb. - Titelblatt unten etwas fleckig, sonst sehr gutes Exemplar!

Cotes, Roger
Cambridge University Press, Cambridge. Published in 1722 this book is in poor condition but it is complete. The front and rear boards are detached, very worn around the edges and in places on the surface the leather is flaking off. The front cover is still attached to the front end paper which is also a title page. They are covered in embossed leather, the pattern is still visible. The leather on the spine is very fragile and split in parts. Inside the front cover a name plate is tipped, the name on it is John Ord of Lincoln's Inn and dated 1761. On the facing title page another previous owner's name is written in ink. There are some very tanned pieces of paper just inside which have no visible printing on them. The next page is blank and detached. That is followed by the full title page which is attached. Pp107 - 125 are also detached. All the script on the title page is in Latin as is the whole text. Internally there is some light foxing but the book is remarkably clean and bright for the most part, given its age. It is illustrated with mathematical drawings. Roger Cotes had been a student of Isaac Newton's and had worked closely with him in the preparation of the second edition of Principia. Sadly Cotes died from a fever in 1716 at the age of 33 prompting Newton to say "if he had lived, we might have known something". For the last nine years of his life he was the first Chair of the Plumian Professorship at Cambridge University. He published only one scientific paper during his lifetime entitled "Logometria" in which he successfully constructs the logarithmic spiral. His … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bible] Brown, Rev. John.
22 x 28.5cm. Part One: 1047 pages / Part Two: 501 pages, with illustrations from steel engravings. Original leatherbound hardcover with gilt lettering and marbled endpapers and edges. Stronger signs of external wear to spine and edges but binding solid and internal text and illustrations in very good condition. John Brown of Haddington (1722 1787), was a Scottish divine and author. His works include The Self-Interpreting Bible, The Dictionary of the Bible, and A General History of the Christian Church. The Self Interpreting Bible was Brown's most significant work, and it remained in print (edited by others), until well into the twentieth century. The objective of providing a commentary for ordinary people was very successful. The idea that the Bible was "self-interpreting" involved copious marginal references, especially comparing one scriptural statement with another. Brown also provided a substantial introduction to the Bible, and added an explication and "reflections" for each chapter. This edition, published in 1847, contains numerous beautifully detailed illustrations from steel engravings.

Pierre BAYLE
Edition includes the three texts Bayle: Other Thoughts (1722) Additions to various thoughts (1722) and responses to several dificultez (1736-1737). Full mottled calf blond at the time. Back smooth decorated with pieces of red morocco, spare volume numbers tinged with black boxes and gilded finials. Simple nets cold frame boards. All red edges. Four corners bumped. Nice copy. All three books that Bayle devoted to the critique of superstition, intolerance and religious fanaticism taking commme base its discussion the passage of the comet. This is the first trial in which Bayle himself known and already has all the analytical skills that will make the reputation of the author. Continuation of the various thoughts, which Bayle deepens his thesis was written nearly twenty years after the various thoughts. The comparison between push atheism and idolatry it develops, and the stated preference of the author for the first, a scandal. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. [QUIROS] COREAL, François (pseudonymous author).
Paris: Robert-Marc d'Espilly, 1722. Two volumes, octavo, with four folding maps and eleven plates (as per collation for the Paris edition given by Borba de Moraes); very good in contemporary full polished calf, spines gilt with raised bands and morocco labels. A curious volume of travels including excerpts from early navigators including Sir Walter Raleigh, Abel Tasman and Fernándes de Quiros. The first volume purports to be a French translation of the travels of a Spaniard in the Americas in the later seventeenth century. However, no such Francisco Coreal is known to exist, and it is generally believed to be a fanciful compilation of other travel accounts spiced up with amorous interludes and vivid descriptions of the native inhabitants. The second volume is of some interest to the Pacific discoveries, with excerpts from true voyage accounts. These include Sir Walter Raleigh in Guinea and John Narborough's expedition through the straits of Magellan to the Pacific coast of the Americas. Of special interest is an extract of 18 pages titled Relation d'un voyage aux Terres Australes inconnues tireé du Journal du Capitaine Abel Jansen Tasman. The second volume closes with two short extracts pertaining to Quiros in the Pacific (being the relations of Alvaro de Mendanga and Juan de Torquemada). This set includes a curious folding map of the south polar hemisphere, presenting the southern continent as 'Terres Australes' (with the usual Dutch landfalls) conjoined with New Guinea and de Quiros' imagined 'Terre du S. Esprit'.Voyages de François Coreal aux Indes Occidentales was publishe … [Click Below for Full Description]
