NEWTON (Isaac)
¶ Printing & the Mind of Man n°172 - "Newton's Opticks laid the foundation of the emission or corpuscular theory of light, which was soon succeeded by Huygens's undulatory theory" Sotheran.

Edward Ward was best known for his 'London Spy', a periodical about London life, featuring adventures from people of various origins exploring London. His exploration of London in these texts included the seedier side of life, like prostitution, burglary, and general felonies. He was often involved in political and religious controversy with his satirical texts, including 'Ecclesia et Factio' and 'Hudibra Redivivus'. He was a high-church Tory who launched several attacks on the Whigs and also the queen on failing to support the Tories in parliament. 'The Parish Gutt'lers' is an attack on closed or select vestry, written late in Ward's career, with the publication resulting in more controversy, as he had already attacked the church in his previous writings.Prior to this work, Ward had already been taken into custody under charges of libel from as early as 1706. For his famous 'Hudibras Redivivus' he was fined 40 marks and had to stand twice for one hour in … [Click Below for Full Description]

Saint Petersburg: Alexander Nevsky Lavra, 1722. Two Orthodox theological works, bound together: ТОЛКОВАНИЕ БЛАЖЕНСТВ (Explanations of the Gospel Beautitudes) (Short selection of songs that remained in memory)In Russian recension of Church Slavonic language.***St. Petersburg, Alexander Nevsky Lavra, ca. 1722.***Based on historical records and details and information that can be found in this book, we can conclude, although not with absolute certainty, that this book contains the work that was commissioned, edited and reviewed by Peter the Great himself in Saint Alexander Nevsky Lavra [monastery] in St. Petersburg as an explanatory part of the Gospel Beautitudes. There is some indication that the work might have been written by Archbishop Theophan Prokopovich. However, there is no direct indication that the work was printed separately from the Beautitudes, and the addition of 24 leaves of Short selection of songs, suggest that this book was individually bound together later. This work is extremely rare and has been used as a part of the education of the higher clergy of Russian Orthodox Church. It is an essential and valuable part of Russian cultural history and the history of Russian Orthodox Church.***Pp.: 138 leaves (Tolkovaniie);Pp.: 24 leaves (Short selection of songs);Size: 15 x 10 cm [5.9 x 3.9 in].***Binding: Original leather binding. [Click Below for Full Description]
