Fordun, John
Oxonii [Oxford]: e Theatro Sheldoniano, 1722. FIRST SEPARATE EDITION, LARGE-PAPER COPY, 5 vols., 8vo, pp. ccxliii, [i], 161, [1]; [ii], 165-491, [1]; [493]-926, [2]; [929]-1366, [2]; [1369]-1640 + 3 plates (1 folding). Vols. 2-5 with half-titles only, as issued. Contemporary calf, boards bordered with a wide gilt roll, spines gilt in compartments between raised bands, red morocco labels, marbled endpapers, edges gilt. Some light spotting, short handling-tear to folding plate. Bindings rubbed and worn at extremities, some labels chipped or defective, joints cracking but sound. Armorial bookplate of Ingestre Hall to front pastedowns. A large- and fine-paper copy of the first separate printing of the earliest attempt to write a continuous history of Scotland, by the fourteenth-century chronicler John of Fordun. Properly speaking this work should be titled 'Chronica Gentis Scotorum'; it was substantially expanded and retitled 'Scotichronicon' by Walter Bower (c.1385-1449), abbot of Inchcolm Abbey, which work was first published a quarter century after this edition. Fordun's chronicle had initially been printed in one of Thomas Gale's compilations of historical texts, and here is edited by the English antiquary Thomas Hearne. This copy is one of a presumably small number printed on larger, thicker paper, though the subscriber's list does not identify special copies. It bears the bookplate of Ingestre Hall, at the time of publication in the ownership of Walter, Viscount Chetwynd (1678-1736), later passing to a relation by marriage who became B … [Click Below for Full Description]

The third deals with attacking and defending forts, the fourth with the necessary equipment for forts, and the fifth with the actual building of forts and all the necessary tools. Depicted in the engravings are schematic groundplans and profiles of different fortifications.Heavily foxed throughout, with some marginal water stains and occasional (ink) stains and spots. Plates with some minor foxing but otherwise good. Binding worn, sides chafed and spine damaged by a few wormholes. Overall a fair copy.

Amsterdam - Covens and Mortier, c. 1722
Afmetingen (prent) 49 x 58 cm. Kwalitatief hoogwaardig gelijst. [Click Below for Full Description]

Winter scene outside Alkmaar - Simon Fokke after Hendrick Avercamp, mid-18th century
IJsgezicht buiten Alkmaar. Prijs: Euro 1.750,- (incl. lijst)

1722. ‎ABBE HOUTTEVILLE‎ ‎LA RELIGION CHRETIENNE PROUVEE PAR LES FAITS AVEC UN DISCOURS HISTORIQUE ET CRITIQUE SUR LA METHODE DES PRINCIPAUX AUTEURS QUI ONT ECRIT POUR ET CONTRE LE CHRISTIANISME DEPUIS SON ORIGINE‎ ‎A Paris chez Grégoire Dupuis. 1722. Format In-4. ».

It was first published in Dutch, as Histori van de Opkompste, Aanwas en Voortgang der Christenen bekend by den naam van Quakers, Amsterdam, 1717. The English edition (London, 1722), dedicated to George I, was largely undertaken to correct Historia Quakeriana (Amsterdam, 1695; English translation, London, 1696, by Gerard Croese, to whom Sewel had given letters and narratives from England). Sewel's own work was based on a mass of correspondence, George Fox's Journal, and, for the public history, Lord Clarendon's Rebellion and Edmun … [Click Below for Full Description]

The work has long been attributed to Raleigh, but some researchers believe it may actually have been written by his son. [Brushfield 277] The book includes three other works: "The Lord-Treasurer Burleigh's Advice to his Son," "The Instructions of Cardinal Sermonetta, To His Cousin Petro Caetano, At his first going to Flanders to the Duke of Parma, to serve Philip King of Spain" and "Walsingham's Manual of Prudential Maxims for Statesmen and Courtiers."This copy belonged to New York Times journalist William Safire.

1722. Richly draped young lady looking out of the picture playing the harpsichord to her own singing. In a garden room with tiled floor in the Dutch manner under widely taken up heavy curtain as since the Middle Ages a bearer of the secret and concealed and repeatedly used by Ridinger since the title sheet to the riding school of 1722 at the open way out to the park from where the master?s cypresses greet. On the right side of the picture another high chair, richly covered by further curtain, on which lies an open music-book. Mezzotint. Inscribed: Ioh. Elias Ridinger excud. Aug. NEWTON (Isaac)
¶ Printing & the Mind of Man n°172 - "Newton's Opticks laid the foundation of the emission or corpuscular theory of light, which was soon succeeded by Huygens's undulatory theory" Sotheran.
