William Sewel
J Sowle, 1722. Leather. Collectible; Acceptable. Leather; English language; No jacket; Folio - over 12" - 15" tall; a fair reading copy; ... this is an ORIGINAL 1722 publication; leather on the boards is very worn, especially near the spine, but the boards are solid; all the leather is missing from spine but the 6 bands and the binding is sound; front and rear boards both detached (but present) with some pages firmly attached - front board has endpapers, title page, dedication to King George I and the first 2 leaves (4 pages) of the Preface; rear board has the final leaf of the publisher's catalogue (i.e. none of the main book); all the other pages are firmly bound to the spine; most pages have an occasional mark or foxing mark but are well preserved given their age (the title page is atypically creased and darkened); pages from approx 688-720 have a water stain to top corner (opposite spine) but where this does impinge upon text readability is unaffected. Khevenhuller, Franz Christoph, graf zu Frankenburg, 1588-1650
Leipzig: Bey Moritz George Weidmann, 1722. Hardcover. Fair. 1721-1722. 2 vols. now bound in 1. 257 (of 393) plates, 372 [i.e.414], [6], 440, [12]p. Hardcover in old vellum which had been painted or lacquered red. 35cm. Cover rather heavily scuffed removing many small pieces of the red paint/lacquer. Lacks 136 plates. Text has some browning but is generally sound and clean. Vol. I has a square (2-3cm.) piece replaced on edge of title-leaf which also has a couple of indecipherable purple rectanglar stamps on the verso. German text. Most of the missing plates were probably in Vol. I (rulers and royalty) since that volume now has less than 90 while Vol. II (nobility) has over 160. The second volume has a different title (except for the first few words). These two volumes were apparently published (or first published) as an appendix to Khevenhuller's massive Annales Ferdinandei (1721-1726).

L'opera è illustrata f.t. da 47 tavv. anatomiche, inc. in rame da Giulio de Musi, tutte dettagliatamente descritte a fronte. "Seconda edizione". Cfr. anche Garrison-Morton,391 che cita la I ed. del 1714: "He discovered the Eustachian tube, the thoracic duct, the adrenals and the abducens nerve, and gave the first accurate description of the uterus. He also described the cochlea, the muscles of the throat and the origin of the optic nerves" - Brunet,II,1113. Solo 1 carta … [Click Below for Full Description]

A splendid copy in beautiful full contemporary calf-gilt.De Montfaucon (1655-1741), a Benedictine of the Congregation of Saint-Maur devoted to historical and ecclesiastical scholarship, pioneered the studies of Greek paleography and archaeology. “His Antiquité… surveyed in fifteen volumes the social and artistic aspects of the ancient civilizations; and the unfinished Monuments de la Monarchie Française tried to do the same for early French history. These works can well be called foundation stones of scientific archaeology” (Printing and the Mind of Man 175). In preparing L’Antiquité… de Montfaucon received contributions and assistance from many of the greatest European collections of antiquities of the period; most of these are credited adjacent to each of their respective illustrations. “As this work has never been completely replaced, it still conserves its long-standing value… Beautiful copies are not easy to come by” (Brunet 28960). “In spite of the imperfections that are impossible … [Click Below for Full Description]

For background information: Preeti Awasthi, Awadh - congenial home for nurturing arts - in historical perspective of painting and music (1722-1856), PdD thesis, University of Lucknow, 2014. A rare example of an early 19th-century north-Indian sexology handbook, beautifully and extensively illustrated. It was commissioned by Saadat Ali Khan II (ca. 1752-1814), 5th Nawab of the princely state of Awadh (officially called Oudh by the British Raj) and written by his personal physician (hakim), possibly Ali Sharif, who had been hakim to the Nawabs before and after Saadat's reign. The illustrations (7.5 x 9 and 14.5 x 9 cm) were made by the official royal painter, who has not been identified. The manuscript is divided into 14 chapters including those on development of male sexuality, development of female sexuality; things to do before, during and after copulation; descriptions of 14 sexual positions (assan); medical compounds for erectile dysfunction; and information about the female orgasm. It illustrates one male homosexual couple and one lesbian couple. Awadh under the Nawabs, straddling the present Indian-Nepalese border, was famous for its harmonious mixing of the Hindu religion and Islam (the Nawabs were Shi'ite). The Awadh school of miniatures "gradually acquired a prominent place in the cultural history of India which no other province gained" providing a "glorious heritage ..., we should make efforts to preserve the rich cultural legacy of Awadh." (Awasthi, p. 102).One new endleaf has been inserted at the end and the decoration at the opening of the text (10.5 x 8.5 cm) … [Click Below for Full Description]
