In the early 1720s, Weigel wrote and illustrated this lean compendium, a “universal-chronological history of the world,” in Latin and German. A tall, thin production, it compressed the entire human story into 16 pages of printed text (“Vorberricht”). Weigel illustrated his history, alternatively titled the Orbis terrarum in nuce, in over 400 copperplate vignettes depicting important historic events from … [Click Below for Full Description]

Clement XI, Pope.
Rome: Apud Jo: Mariam Salvioni 1722. Clement XI (Giovanni Francesco Albani) was pope from 1700 up until his death. He was a patron of the arts and sciences and was also a benefactor of the Vatican Library. During his papacy, he made an important decision regarding the Chinese Rites Controversy. As a result of this decision, Jesuit missionaries were forbidden from taking part in any honors paid to Confucius or the ancestors of the Emperors of China, which Clement XI deemed to be both uncivilized and idolatrous. Orationes Consistoriales is a memorial work, published after the popeÕs death in 1722. It consists of ninety-four orations given by Clement XI to his council on a wide variety of subjects, including four on missionary activity in China. This work was edited by the PopeÕs nephew, Italian Cardinal Annibale Albani. Pope Clement XI appointed Albani (1682-1751) as the Cardinal Bishop of Sabina in 1711. Tall folio. vii, [1], 307 pp. Copper-engraved title page printed in black and red. Engraved preliminary illustration; engraved portrait of Clement XI; large engraved historiated initials; engraved coat of arms; illustrated with 219 engraved head and tail pieces. Manzolli, Pietro Angelo (Palingenius, Marcellus)
- For background information: Preeti Awasthi, Awadh - congenial home for nurturing arts - in historical perspective of painting and music (1722-1856), PdD thesis, University of Lucknow, 2014. A rare example of an early 19th-century north-Indian sexology handbook, beautifully and extensively illustrated. It was commissioned by Saadat Ali Khan II (ca. 1752-1814), 5th Nawab of the princely state of Awadh (officially called Oudh by the British Raj) and written by his personal physician (hakim), possibly Ali Sharif, who had been hakim to the Nawabs before and after Saadat's reign. The illustrations (7.5 x 9 and 14.5 x 9 cm) were made by the official royal painter, who has not been identified. The manuscript is divided into 14 chapters including those on development of male sexuality, development of female sexuality; things to do before, during and after copulation; descriptions of 14 sexual positions (assan); medical compounds for erectile dysfunction; and information about the female orgasm. It illustrates one male homosexual couple and one lesbian couple. Awadh under the Nawabs, straddling the present Indian-Nepalese border, was famous for its harmonious mixing of the Hindu religion and Islam (the Nawabs were Shi'ite). The Awadh school of miniatures "gradually acquired a prominent place in the cultural history of India which no other province gained" providing a "glorious heritage ., we should make efforts to preserve the rich cultural legacy of Awadh." (Awasthi, p. 102).One new endleaf has been inserted at the end and the decoration at the opening of the text (10.5 x 8.5 cm) … [Click Below for Full Description]

EUSTACHIUS Bartholomaeus
apud R. & G. Wetstenios, 1722. "Seconda edizione". Cfr. anche Garrison-Morton,391 che cita la I ed. del 1714: "He discovered the Eustachian tube, the thoracic duct, the adrenals and the abducens nerve, and gave the first accurate description of the uterus. He also described the cochlea, the muscles of the throat and the origin of the optic nerves" - Brunet,II,1113. Solo 1 carta iniziale restau … [Click Below for Full Description]
