[Click Below for Full Description]

Six full-page woodcut illus. in the text. 17 vols. Large 8vo, orig. blue wrappers (quite rubbed), orig. block-printed title labels on covers (rubbed), new stitching. Kyoto: Murakami Kanbe et al., 1722. Second edition to be printed in Japan, of Yixue rumen [trans.: Primer on the Study of Medicine or Entering the Door of Medicine] of Li Chan (fl. 1573-1619). An influential introductory Chinese medical textbook published in 1575, it is itself a condensation of the important Gu Jin Yi Tong [trans.: Old and Modern Medical Generalities] by Xu Chunfu, published in 1556 in 100 volumes. This work gathered medical knowledge from over 300 published and unpublished Chinese medical classics. In Beijing, Xu Chunfu established one of the first medical associations for doctors, the Medical Society for Harboring Kindness. Our work is printed in Chinese with Japanese reading marks. It contains many important passages concerning acupuncture. Three of the full-page woodcuts depict pressure points. The first volume contains a very useful "grand index" for the remaining volumes. The remaining volumes are a comprehensive collection with an overall summary of the basic theories and clinical departments of traditional Chinese medicine, including physician's bio-bibliographies, discussions of the different schools of medicine, pulse-taking methods, the doctrine on five elements and six natural influences, channels and collaterals, acupuncture and moxibustion, materia medica, health preservation, obstetrics, pediatrics, surgery, and treatment in clinical practice of different departments and medical … [Click Below for Full Description]

THOMASIUS, Christian,
Litteris Salfeldianis,, Halle, 1722 - Halle, Litteris Salfeldianis, 1722, recusa. 8vo.

¶ Dezeimeris VII. 63 - Blake p.401 - Garrison-Morton n°573 "Sanctorius was the founder of the physiology of metabolism. He introduced into physiology exact methods of measurement, pulse counting, temperature determination, and weighing." - Dorbon n°4385.

Partington, III, p. 64 ; DSB, XI, p 328 ; Bibliotheca Mechanica, pages 273-74. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

During his papacy, he made an important decision regarding the Chinese Rites Controversy. As a result of this decision, Jesuit missionaries were forbidden from taking part in any honors paid to Confucius or the ancestors of the Emperors of China, which Clement XI deemed to be both uncivilized and idolatrous. Orationes Consistoriales is a memorial work, published after the pope's death in 1722. It consists of ninety-four orations given by Clement XI to his council on a wide variety of subjects, including four on missionary activity in China. This work was edited by the Pope's nephew, Italian Cardinal Annibale Albani. Pope Clement XI appointed Albani (1682-1751) as the Cardinal Bishop of Sabina in 1711.

An early contemporary history of the Indian nations of Canada and their relations with the French and English, written by a French naval officer serving in Hudson's Bay and New France between 1697 and 1714. Bacqueville's epistolary account derives chiefly from his own observations of the capture of Fort Nelson and Frontenac's administration, and also summarizes the earlier stewardship of Denonville, the French establishment on the St. Lawrence, the Hudson's Bay expeditions, and the Iroquois Nation's method of making war and contracting alliances. "This work relates entirely to Canada and the Iroquois Indians; the plates comprise the earliest views taken in Canada" (Sabin). The maps include: "Carte de la Baye et Detroit d'Hudson," "Carte du Gouvernement du Montreal," and "Carte Generalle [sic] de la Nouvelle France." FÉNELON, Francois de Salignac de la Mothe.
Edinburgh: Printed for Mr. William Monro, 1722. Small octavo (140 x 91 mm), disbound from a pamphlet volume. Recent grey paper boards, title label to front board printed in black. A fine copy. First edition of the Roman Catholic archbishop, theologian, and poet's collection of aphorisms, published posthumously. It is likely to be a translation of "Maximes morales et politiques" from Les Aventures de Télémaque, Fénelon's hugely popular didactic novel first published anonymously in 1699 and reissued under his name in 1717. Télémaque, his scathing critique of the autocratic government of Louis XIV, recommends the introduction of a parliamentary system and the abolition of the mercantile system. It has been described as "the first prose poem in French" (Harvey and Heseltine, p. 270). See Sir Paul Harvey and J. E. Heseltine, The Oxford Companion to French Literature (Oxford: The Clarendon Press, 1959). [Attributes: First Edition]

The celebrated German orientalist, and Biblical critic Heinrich Friedrich Wilhelm Gesenius (1786-1842) was particularily emphatic in its commendation; declaring that [the book] not only made an epoch in the study of Isaiah, but outweighs the earlier and a good part of the later expositions. In wealth of philological and exegetical learning, aptness of illustration, and fulness of historical information, Gesenius declares that Vitringa's Commentary on Isaiah is by no means superseded. RACINE (Louis).
Paris 1722 1Paris, 1722. A Paris, Chez Jean-Baptiste Coignard, Jean Desaint, 1742. In-8 de XVI-206-(2) pp. Edition originale suivie du Jugement de M.
