Santiago. [various dates ca. 1722-1762].. Approximately 525 pages of Spanish manuscript records in a variety of hands, plus approximately fifteen blank pages. Folio. Dbd. Edges lightly worn, occasional moderate dampstaining and soiling. 18th- century stamp tax stamps on several leaves, including a few blanks. In very good condition. In a cloth clamshell case, leather label. A massive collection of manuscript legal documents generated in Santiago, Chile between 1722 and 1762. The collection records a wide range of legal notices including royal decrees from Spain, affirmations that such decrees were received and reviewed, and updates and references to earlier laws. The majority of the documents mention local figures such as high government officials, church leaders, and other members of the local aristocracy; a few refer to members of other sectors of the community, including mulattoes and "Indios infieles;" and a few others include news of royal figures in Spain. The subjects detailed in these documents include financial matters and accounts, land holdings, religious matters (including organizations, missionaries, and rituals), the naming of judges, criminal acts (including homicides), judicial decisions, visits and actions performed by different fiscals, and numerous other legal matters concerning everyday life in colonial Chile documented over the course of four decades in the mid-18th century. In addition to the content of the texts, the formulaic elements and the physical characteristics of the manuscripts are also notable as evidence of when and where the documents were produced. These include the various hands in which the documents are written, signatures of officials and scribes, standard formulas for the different types of legal documents and summaries included at the end of particular texts (both comparable to the forms found in printed versions of similar laws), Maltese crosses inscribed at the beginning of certain royal documents, and stamp tax stamps with different dates found on several leaves of paper. A vast gathering of mid-18th-century Spanish legal manuscript documents produced in Chile, with much potential for additional study and research.

I. Livre I. & II. De la vraye Repentance. 2. De la fainte Priere. 3. De la veritable Equanimité, dit l'Abandon. 4. De la Regeneration. 5. Dialogue de la Vie fuperfenfuelle. 6. De la contemplation divine. 7.

[Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Under bilden rysk text i tre rader.

The scarce First Issue (Brunet, column 1086). The Second Issue, as well as the 1723 edition, had 151 plates with additional text in the index. A beautifully illustrated book and one of the principal sources for the history of musical instruments in the 18th century as well as being one of the earliest attempts to describe and depict every known musical instrument from the ancient times. Each instrument is illustrated being played by a native from its region of origin giving the book additional interest ethnologically and for its costumes. The work is dedicated to King David, who is shown playing the harp in the frontispiece. Of especial interest is the folding plate depicting the surreal and magnificent organ designed by Michele Todino for the Palazzo Signori Verospi in Rome. The learned Jesuit polymath, Filippo Bonanni (1638–1725), published on a wide spectrum of subjects, ranging from natural history and biology to numismatics. The present book, his last, is based on the Society's Collegio Romano's collection where Bonanni succeeded his teacher Athanasius Kircher as professor of mathematics.

A Map of Carolana and of the River Meschacebe &c

[London: 1722-1741]. Copper-engraved map. Inset of the Mississippi delta titled "A Map of the Mouth of the River Meschacebe." Old ink manuscript notation in cartouche dating the map 1727. (Old folds). 17 1/4 x 21 3/4 inches. Among the earliest English cartographic depictions of the Mississippi Valley. At the end of the seventeenth century, the Coxe family laid claim to an enormous region in the South based on royal grants received by Dr. Daniel Coxe (1640-1730), with the intention of forming a trading company to establish an English colony at the mouth of the Mississippi River. In 1722 (and with subsequent editions to 1741), Colonel Daniel Coxe (1673-1739), who had travelled in America in 1702, published a description of the region to further his family's claims. "Apparently to avoid conflict with the established settlements of the lords proprietors only the country west of the settled portion of Carolina was claimed by Coxe" (Cumming). Beyond his own claims, Coxe published the work to raise awareness of the significant potential of the area and the dangers posed by French incursions. Partly based on mappings by Delisle, the map holds the distinction of being among the earliest English depictions of the Mississippi Valley and one of few maps to name the region Carolana. It improved on many of the previous maps by eliminating the mountain ranges that were often shown as running beside the Mississippi River, as well as correctly fixing the location of the Appalachian and Ozark mountains. It extends as far north as the Great Lakes and includes an inset of the Mississippi Delta. A hachured line on the map running from Lake Champlain in the north to Port Royal in the south delineates what the French believed the boundary to be between the English colonies and their vast Louisiana claim. English place names, particularly in the large inset of the Mississippi Delta, reflect the British designs on the region. Cumming, Southeast in Early Maps 190; Charting Louisiana, pp. 41-44; cf. Church 886; cf. Clark I:68; cf. European Americana 741/48; cf. Howes C826; cf. JCB (1)III:679; cf. Sabin 17281; cf. Vail 409.

Torino: Reycends & Guiberts. (c. 1722). oblong folio, contemporary blue wrappers. 26 engraved leaves (of 28).. Text in Italian. A manual by Italian writing master Pitois. One of a number of his works produced in Turin by Reycends Brothers and the book/mapseller firm Guibert. At the beginning of the 18th century, the Rome-Venice hegemony in penmanship was waning, due to growing French influence in calligraphy. This slant towards French taste is revealed in the "Moderno" of the title, and the fact that most of the twenty-six leaves are marked as engraved in Paris by artist Claude-Auguste de Berey. From 1690 to 1730 de Berey, or Berey, engraved the plates for several well-known French works on calligraphy. All the firm's writing manuals printed at this time were engraved in Paris (Barker, p. 147). Two leaves lacking. Soiled, margins chipped, old fold at center.

Tabulae Anatomicae, 1722 (Folio Size, 47 Plates)

Amsterdam: R. & G. Wetstenios, 1722. Second edition. Folio. 375 x 235 cm. Contemporary brown boards, calf spine with six raised bands, label with title. Engraved title-page showing illustration of a dissection and exquisite 47 full-page engraved plates all fine, with superior registration and dark impressions. On an attached string is the original ruler usually not found. Eustachio's finely executed drawings for the Tabulae depicting the thorax, nervous system, various organs and vascular structures were equal to any drawn in the period. The Dutch 1722 is of great rarity and few complete copies have survived in contemporary bindings. Tomlinson remarks, "Eustachio's plates are remarkable not only for the advanced anatomical knowledge shown, but also for the original method of identification of structures drawn on the plates, and for their artistic qualities." A complete, tall copy, contents clean and bright with the only flaw being a crude mending of tears to the lower corner of the title page. There is a loss of some of the paper, but not affecting any lettering or the engraving. Binding worn with top one inch of spine worn away, corners chipped, edges worn. Still a well-preserved and attractive binding; moreso, a nearly fine example of all of the engravings.

"The labor of translating this Greco-Roman author was divided between Mr. Diaper (Pt. 1, Books I and II) and John Jones (Pt. 2, Books III to V). The latter contributor also wrote an account of Oppian"s life and writings and compiled a catalogue of his Fishes. Text block tight and firm. An acceptable working copy of a rare military book. Sébastien Le Prestre, Seigneur de Vauban and later Marquis de Vauban (1633–1707), commonly referred to as Vauban, was a Marshal of France and the foremost military engineer of his age. He was famous for his skill in both designing fortifications and in breaking through them. He also advised Louis XIV on how to consolidate France's borders, to make them more defensible. He made the radical suggestion of giving up some land that was indefensible to allow for a stronger, less porous border with France's neighbours. He was involved in the Siege of Maastricht (1673), the Siege of Valenciennes (1677) and the fortification of the cities of Strasbourg (1681) and Landau (1688). Often attributed to the pen of Vauban, this work is actually a translation of the Chevalier de Cambray's “Maniere de fortifier de Mr. de Vauban" and was first published in English in 1691. The translator's Dedicatory Epistle is signed A. S. (Abel Swall). Recognised as an important work in its field the English edition was reprinted twice more in the 18th century after our fourth edition in 1748 and 1762. However it is very scarce in any edition. The book is in 3 sections: pages 1-61 A New Treatise of Geometry; pages 61-186 A Treatise of Fortification; pages 187-213 Military orders and the Art of Gunnery. Spaulding and Karpinski, Early Military Books in the Michigan Libraries, page 23, No. 201. Not in Sotheby's Library of the Earls of Macclesfield, Part 10. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING.
