      Paris: Montalant, 1722 Finely printed with decorative woodcut headpiece, initials, and engraved chapter vignettes depicting author?'s optical experiments (white on black background -- see sketch of vignette in Guerlac, pp. 158 and on dust jacket of his book). With 12 folding engraved plates. Full vellum; faint water stains on the blank fore-edge of a few leaves. Bookplate of Arnold Thackray as well as a very interesting contemporary wax armorial stamp used as a bookplate. An especially nice, crisp copy, important for its illustrations and typographical execution. This second French edition is greatly superior to the first Amsterdam edition of 1720 (which was published in 12mo.) not only textually but for its beauty. According to Guerlac, it is the handsomest edition of the Opticks printed in Newton?'s lifetime, or indeed later. This edition, quite rare, was edited by Pierre Varignon, and included changes proposed by de Moivre and authorized by Newton.

        NUOVO LIBRO DI CARATTERI DIVERSI DE SCRITTURA FORMATA, E CORSIVA PERFETTA. AD USO PRATTICO E MODERNO . ED INTAGLIATTI DA DE BEREY IN PARIGGI

      Reycends & Guibert, Torino 1722 - oblong folio. contemporary blue wrappers. 26 engraved leaves (of 28). Text in Italian. A manual by Italian writing master Pitois. One of a number of his works produced in Turin by Reycends Brothers and the book/mapseller firm Guibert. At the beginning of the 18th century, the Rome-Venice hegemony in penmanship was waning, due to growing French influence in calligraphy. This slant towards French taste is revealed in the "Moderno" of the title and the fact that most of the twenty-six leaves are marked as engraved in Paris by artist Claude-Auguste de Berey. From 1690 to 1730 de Berey, or Berey, engraved the plates for several well-known French works on calligraphy. All the firm's writing manuals printed at this time were engraved in Paris (Barker, p. 147). Two leaves lacking. Soiled, margins chipped, old fold at center. Marks in ink throughout.         A Sermon Preached by a French Hugonot [sic] Teacher to his congregation in 1689 in praise of Cuckoldom Printed at Cologne in French, and now translated into English, for the consolation of all English cuckolds

      London: printed, and sold by T. Warner, at the Sign of the Black-Boy in Pater-Noster-Row, 1722. First edition in English of this amusing "back-handed condemnation" of cuckold-making. 12mo. 24 pp. Twentieth-century full brown bear skin with the fur still on, marbled endpapers by John Field. Faint foxing to text, fur binding fine. ESTC T89694 . The cuckold plays his part in the stereotypical imagery of 18th-century frivolity-connected to the realm of erotic conspiracy and license. "Our wives are lovely,"acknowledges the author, "why should they not be beloved?- We live in an age where men sell their consciences for a bribe, why should not we then sell our wives' favors for good posts and precious things?- Let us discretely wink at their stealths." "Offering insight into the mentality of the public as they engaged in loose morality and cuckold-making, this piece is perhaps the most compelling evidence of back-handed condemnation. It includes the wife's perspective and moral justification for her behavior. These justifications, though, seem trivial [to the modern reader] and show themselves to be mere attempts at pacifying the cuckold's guilty conscience" (Ryan Gritter)

        Histoire de l'Amerique Septentrionale.

      Paris: Jean-Luc Nion and Francois Didot, 1722. - 4 volumes. 12mo., (6 ½ x 3 ¾ inches). Letterpress title pages printed in red and black in all four volumes; additional engraved title page in volume one by Jean-Baptiste Scotin (b. 1678). 2 fine folding engraved maps, one full-page map, folding view of Quebec, 9 folding plates, 15 full-page plates, 2 plates of musical notation (very slightly toned). Contemporary brown speckled calf, the spine in 6 compartments with five raised bands, gilt lettered in two and decorated in the rest (extremities a bit worn, hinges weakened). First edition. "THE EARLIEST VIEWS TAKEN IN CANADA" (Sabin). An early contemporary history of the Indian nations of Canada and their relations with the French and English, written by a French naval officer serving in Hudson's Bay and New France between 1697 and 1714. Bacqueville's epistolary account derives chiefly from his own observations of the capture of Fort Nelson and Frontenac's administration, and also summarizes the earlier stewardship of Denonville, the French establishment on the St. Lawrence, the Hudson's Bay expeditions, and the Iroquois Nation's method of making war and contracting alliances. "This work relates entirely to Canada and the Iroquois Indians; the plates comprise the earliest views taken in Canada" (Sabin). The maps include: "Carte de la Baye et Detroit d'Hudson," "Carte du Gouvernement du Montreal," and "Carte Generalle [sic] de la Nouvelle France." "Of the four volumes of the 'Histoire,' volumes I, III, and IV are in the form of letters; the first is the best written and most trustworthy. Here La Potherie is an eye witness and an excellent observer. His letters on the governments of Quebec, Trois-Rivieres, and Montreal offer a fairly complete picture of Canada. The descriptions of places and of the settlers' way of life, the notes on individuals, the statistics on population and sources of revenue show that nothing escaped La Potherie's attention and that he wanted his readers to be well informed. He notes the rivalry between Quebec and Montreal, but without stressing it. If he narrates, he does not refrain from judging. It is not to France's interest, he affirms, to keep Hudson Bay; Canadian trade would suffer. He regrets that Montreal has not been made the capital of Canada "The purpose of volume II, which is divided into chapters and written in a less careful style, is to make known the principal Indian nations and their relations with the French colony. La Potherie had intended to go and study on the spot the problems that he tackles here. As his stat of health did not permit that, he contented himself with gathering his information from reliable witnesses: Louis Jolliet, the Jesuit missionaries, and especially Nicolas Perrot. According to Father Jules Tailhan, a Jesuit and editor of Perrot's Memoire, the latter may not only have given La Potherie verbal information but even have made accessible to him accounts that today are no longer to be found "Volumes III and IV are devoted particularly to an account of the Iroquois wars and of the peace parleys which resulted in the general treaty of 1701. For events prior to 1698, the date of his arrival in Canada, La Potherie relied on his informants, whose statements were trustworthy, but not always complete. From 1698 to 1701, although he took no official part in the peace parleys, he followed them closely. During the summer of 1701 he was at Montreal and Sault-Saint-Louis. He also had access to documents which he quotes readily. He summarizes the speeches of Calliere and of the chiefs of the various nations" (Leon Pouliot for CNB).         The Life, and Strange Surprizing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe…. [and] The Farther Adventures of Robinson Crusoe;

      1722. The Rare First Illustrated CrusoeThe Beginning of Realistic Fiction as a Literary GenreHandsomely Bound By Francis Bedford[DEFOE, Daniel]. The Life, and Strange Surprizing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe…. London: Printed for W. Taylor, 1722. [Together with][DEFOE, Daniel]. The Farther Adventures of Robinson Crusoe; Being the Second and Last Part of his Life, and of the Strange Surprizing Account of his Travels Round three Parts of the Globe. London: Printed for W. Taylor, 1722.Sixth edition of Volume I, third edition of Volume II. Two octavo volumes (7 1/2 x 4 9/16 inches; 190 x 106 mm.). [4], 364, [4, ads]; 318, [2, ads] pp.  Volume I: title-page printed in red and black, with ship vignette; engraved frontispiece, folding engraved map of the world (from Volume II), and 6 engraved plates. Volume II: title-page in black, with ship vignette, and 6 engraved plates.Bound by F. Bedford in early nineteenth century full red crushed levant morocco. Covers with multi-gilt rules and decorative thistle corner pieces. Spines with five raised bands, decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt, gilt board-edges and turn-ins, all edges gilt, dark green coated endpapers.A fine and very attractive copy this very rare imprint, being the first illustrated edition of Robinson Crusoe. The only other copy that I have seen was from the collection of Marjorie Moon (DJB). OCLC only records only three copies of the first volume (Emory Harvard & Michigan)but no copies of the second volume. However ESTC (English Short Title Catlogue) does record five copies of volumes one and two (Emory, Rutgers, Illinois, Michigan and Yale).The first edition of 1719 is illustrated by just a frontispiece and a folding map. It is a high-spot in book collecting and commands a very price. It is a also a bibliographic challenge with many issue points. The Frederick S. Peck copy in a similar 'Bedford' binding was sold for $55,825 by Sotheby's in 2010. "The Sixth Edition is at the same time both rare and interesting. It is the first of the Taylor editions appearing with the red and black title-page which was so popular on the continent…And it is the first edition of Part I appearing with the illustrations, interesting in the extreme as forerunners of the long line of famous engravings by illustrious artists to follow through the remainder of the century…The Third Edition shows good presswork, and is especially interesting on account of the six plates, together with the map, which, because it is not mentioned on the title-page, is frequently overlooked" (Hutchins). Robinson Crusoe is a novel by Daniel Defoe, which was first published on 25 April 1719. The first edition credited the work's fictional protagonist Robinson Crusoe as its author, leading many readers to believe he was a real person and the book a travelogue of true incidents. It was published under the considerably longer original title The Life and Strange Surprizing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, Of York, Mariner: Who lived Eight and Twenty Years, all alone in an un-inhabited Island on the Coast of America, near the Mouth of the Great River of Oroonoque; Having been cast on Shore by Shipwreck, wherein all the Men perished but himself. With An Account how he was at last as strangely deliver'd by Pyrates. Epistolary, confessional, and didactic in form, the book is a fictional autobiography of the title character (whose birth name is Robinson Kreutznaer) - a castaway who spends years on a remote tropical island near Trinidad, encountering cannibals, captives, and mutineers before being rescued.The story is widely perceived to have been influenced by the life of Alexander Selkirk, a Scottish castaway who lived for four years on the Pacific island called "Más a Tierra" (in 1966 its name was changed to Robinson Crusoe Island), Chile. However, other possible sources have been put forward for the text. It is possible, for example, that Defoe was inspired by the Latin or English translations of Ibn Tufail's Hayy ibn Yaqdhan, an earlier novel also set on a desert island. Another source for Defoe's novel may have been Robert Knox's account of his abduction by the King of Ceylon in 1659 in "An Historical Account of the Island Ceylon," Glasgow: James MacLehose and Sons (Publishers to the University), 1911. In his 2003 book In Search of Robinson Crusoe, Tim Severin contends that the account of Henry Pitman in a short book chronicling his escape from a Caribbean penal colony and subsequent shipwrecking and desert island misadventures, is the inspiration for the story. Arthur Wellesley Secord in his Studies in the narrative method of Defoe (1963: 21–111) painstakingly analyses the composition of Robinson Crusoe and gives a list of possible sources of the story, rejecting the common theory that the story of Selkirk is Defoe's only source.Despite its simple narrative style, Robinson Crusoe was well received in the literary world and is often credited as marking the beginning of realistic fiction as a literary genre. Before the end of 1719 the book had already run through four editions, and it has gone on to become one of the most widely published books in history.Hutchins, pp. 83, 115.

Plast. Chir., SS.24-25, no.150). - Siehe ausführlich zur Ohrenheilkunde - A.Politzer, Gesch. d. Ohrenheilkunde, I,p.225ff. - Koehler, Kriegschirurgen., pp.86-114; v.Brunn, Geschichte der Chirurgie, pp.222-23; Leonardo, Lives of Master Surgeons, pp.354-55; Zimmermann-Veith, Great Ideas in the History of Surgery, p.253-56; Hirsch-H.         A new theory of the earth, from its original, to the consummation of all things.

      Benj. and Sam. Tooke, London 1722 - 8vo. [4], 95, [1], 460pp. Frontispiece, 7 plates, text illustrations. Paneled calf c. 1722, hinges cracking, corners a bit rubbed. Corner of leaf U2 torn away not affecting text. Engraved bookplate of Ambrose Isted tipped to verso of title. Third edition, "with great additions, improvements and corrections." Whiston's "New Theory of the Earth," first published in 1696, attempted to combine science and religion by basing the creation story on Newtonian physics. Whiston postulated that the earth originated from the atmosphere of a comet and that all major changes in earth's history, including the Noachian Flood, could be attributed to the action of comets. The work is dedicated to Newton, whom Whiston succeeded as Lucasian Professor at Cambridge in 1701. Wing W-1696

        The Fortunes and Misfortunes of the Famous Moll Flanders &c. Who Was Born in Newgate

      Holland: ?, 1722. This book is obviously a 19th century production. It resets the original text including the title page word for word dated 1722 although there is no attempt to deceive. At the bottom of the title page it states Printed in Holland but there is no other information regarding date or publisher. The binding is a good quality three quarter calf with marbled boards and the block is gilt top edge. The front pastedown bears the armorial library plate of Ricardi F.GVL.Brandt and the title page the stamp of R.F.W.Brandt, possibly a son. There are references to RFW Brandt making ceramic bequests to the Victoria & Albert Museum so the book probably has some pedigree. A publishing enigma and extremely scarce.. Three-Quarter Calf. Very Good. 180x120mm.

He made ‘all sorts of Instruments and Machines, used in the several Parts both of Mathematicks and Natural Philosophy . At about the same time he was commissioned to write a ‘history’ of the society - a public statement of its aims, methods, and achievements, that might meet criticisms of the Royal Society’s limited productivity in the three years since its foundation, and quell fears that experimental science would challenge the belief structures of Restoration society. Neither before nor after writing the History did Sprat demonstrate any interest in natural philosophy, even though he remained a member of the society until his death’ (ODNB). (ESTC T131280)

      - Frankfurt u. Leipzig, Christian Gottlieb Hertel, 1722, Kl.8°, (14), 146 pp.; Berlin, Haube und Spener, 1773, 8°, (8), 120 pp., Pappband der Zeit; unbeschnittenes Exemplar. Not common first German Edition, bound with the first German edition of William Falconer's (1724-1844) "Observations on Dr. Cadogan's Dissertation on the gout and all chronic diseases." - - The clyster and other "rather fierce methods of treatment received a temporary setback when Dr. William Cadogan (1711-1799) published his best-selling book, A Dissertation on the Gout and on All Chronic Diseases (1771), which he dedicated "to all invalids." In it, he refuted specific treatment and, with great originality as was then thought, advocated a permanently temperate way of life. He wrote: "How ill can vomiting, bleeding and purging supply the place of temperance; cordials and opium of peace of mind? . It is the constant course of life which we lead, what we do, or neglect to do habitually that, if right, establishes our health; if wrong, makes us invalids for life." Nevertheless he later relented somewhat and said that: "I think the causes may be very fairly reduced to these three: Indolence, Intemperance and Vexation. . . . It is by their own fault that they are ill. Nonetheless medical treatment can do good." Dr. Samuel Johnson was asked his opinion of this work by Boswell, and thought that: " 'This a good book in general, Sir, but a foolish one as to particulars." No doubt this was because for his own gout Johnson preferred and practised drastic treatment which included enormous doses of dr. James powder of antimony, such as were supposed to have killed his friend, Olvier Goldsmith." - Dr. William Cadogan, F.R.S. (1711-1797), qualified originally at Leyden, but later became physician to the Foundling Hospital in London. William Munk described him as being "of pleasing manners and strong good sense, who by his writing did draw much attention to himself, and paved the way to a lucrative business." His Dissertation on the Gout (1771) attracted great attention and went through eleven editions (in two years); whilst his sturdy common sense and advocacy of moderation in all things did much to dispel the mystique which had long surrounded this disease. The great actor, David Garrick, who was a sufferer, wrote of this: "Dr. C. has written a book lately upon ye gout. It is much admired and certainly has its merit-I was frightened with it for a week." Cadogan maintained that the causes of gout were three in number: "Indolence, Intemperance and Vexation. . So it is by the patient's own fault that he is ill," and although he realized that this was sometimes recognized by enlightened physicians, he declared: "Nonetheless, they are afraid to say so, and this talk seems to have been left to me, and I will perform it most sincerely." He concluded: "Let me say that an active and frugal life is a safe preventative, and may be a cure." Cadogan built himself a pleasant country house near London which is now the Hurlingham Club, home of English polo, to which he retired and died at the age of 86." W.S.C. Copeman, A Short history of the Gout, pp.4,7,16,84-89 - "For the treatment of chronic diseases Cadogan advocated Activity, Temperance and Peace of Mind. The prescription of the modem geriatrician!" Plast. Chir., SS.24-25, no.150). - Siehe ausführlich zur Ohrenheilkunde - A.Politzer, Gesch. d. Ohrenheilkunde, I,p.225ff. - Koehler, Kriegschirurgen..., pp.86-114; v.Brunn, Geschichte der Chirurgie, pp.222-23; Leonardo, Lives of Master Surgeons, pp.354-55; Zimmermann-Veith, Great Ideas in the History of Surgery, p.253-56; Hirsch-H.
