Contemporary black morocco, spine compartments divided saltire-wise with a dotted gilt roll, gilt flower-head tools, gilt rules, sides ruled in gilt with a French fillet, corners gilt with scroll tools and a crown, similar tools forming gilt central ornaments, board-edges and turn-ins gilt with a decorative roll, comb-marbled endpapers, gilt edges. A trifle rubbed at extremities, a fine copy. Bookseller's imprint on a pasted slip below the border of the engraved title. Engraved throughout, complete with engraved dedication leaf and subscribers list at end. First edition thus, engraved throughout by the English engraver and calligrapher John Sturt (1658–1730), exhibiting his mastery of miniature work, with the engraved text illustrated with 82 engraved vignettes of scenes of the life of Christ, all within engraved decorative borders. The text and borders were separately imposed, so that copies do not always have the same border surrounding a particular page of text, and the leaves are not always bound in the same order. Tagli spruzzati.
