*** Titel: Planisphaerium Coeleste *** Gebiet bzw. SOUTH SEA COMPANY.)
London: printed for Jacob Tonson, Bernard Lintot, and William Taylor, 1721. 2 volumes in 1, folio (320 x 203 mm). Modern red half morocco, black morocco spine label, raised bands bordered with blind double fillet, grey cloth boards edged with gilt scrollwork, edges sprinkled red. Embossed ownership stamp of William Thomas Morgan to title leaf of first work. Contents lightly tanned and occasionally foxed, else a well-preserved set. Engraved title pages, head- and tailpieces. A scarce collection of over 30 very detailed estate inventories produced during the intense scrutiny of the South Sea Company and its employees in the aftermath of the Bubble. Printed by order of the House of Commons, each inventory has a separate title leaf, pagination, and register, printing in exhaustive details the particulars of the accounts of company directors such as Huguenot financier Sir Theodore Janssen (who had been director of the Bank of England three times), Russia merchant William Astell, and John Blunt, one of the principal architects of the scheme. Also issued separately, they are more commonly found as such in institutions, ESTC locating just seven complete two-volume sets in the UK, 17 more in North America, and none elsewhere. "In December 1720 both Houses of Parliament called for a series of accounts from the unhappy South Sea Company, designed to elucidate its overt and covert actions in executing its scheme [and] on 23 and 28 January 1721 two Bills about the directors received the royal assent. This edition features additions to the first edition and includes a foldout account of the funerals in the city of London during the year of the Plague. The embossed brown leather cover shows some wear, but the binding and spine are intact and tight. There is a plate on the inside front cover that features the name and crest of James Plunkett, Earl of Fingall, a title in the Peerage of Ireland. Pages are faded, but clean and unmarked.

(DEFOE, DANIEL). - [FIRST FRENCH ROBINSON CRUSOE]
Amsterdam, Honoré et Chatelain, 1721-1720-1721. Bound in three later, uniform blue half morocco bindings with gilt spines. Light brownspotting throughout, but a nice copy, complete with all three frontispieces, three maps and 18 plates. ¶ First edition - reissue of the first volume and first issue of volumes two and three - of the first French translation of one of the most important literary works ever written. "Robinson Crusoe" marks the beginning of realistic fiction as a literary genre and is widely recognized as the first English novel. Originally published in English in 1719, the work was seen through no less than four editions before the end of its first year and went on to become one of the most widely published books in history, spawning so many imitations, not only in literature but also in film, television and radio, that its name is used to define an entire genre - the Robinsonade. By the end of the 19th century, no book in the history of Western literature had more editions, spin-offs and translations than "Robinson Crusoe", with more than 700 alternative versions of it, the French translation being among the very first. It's influence in literature is almost unparalleled.

Le vray Pescheur Fidèle (Simon Lacourt) (Ed. by)
Bordeaux: Pierre Calamy, 1721. First edition. Hardcover. g+ to vg. 24mo (6 1/4 x 4"). 88, 8pp. Modern half calf over marbled paper covered boards, with gold lettering to spine. Modern endpapers and fly leaves. Woodblock frontispiece and title page. Decorative headpieces. Rare "Almanach des Dieux" (Almanach of the Gods) for the year 1722, containing a calendar, articles on remedies to stay safe from the plague, on how to grow fruit trees, etc.. Also includes a list of the births and deaths which occured in the French Royal family from 1645 to 1720, a list of the main Fairs in the kingdom, a list of arrivals and departures of mail coaches from Bordeaux, etc.. This almanach is prefaced by an anti-semitic text titled "récit véritable" (true story) about a certain Felix Coën, a Jewish messianic pretender in Ferrara (Italy) supposedly crowned on August 2, 1721 by the local rabbi at the synagogue, while a gentile newborn was being bled to death, and his blood collected to be used for Challah bread. The story ends with the Inquisitor of Ferrara arresting the rabbi, the whole Jewish assistance and Felix Coën, and preparing their upcoming trials. This ritual murder calumny was used by the Christian Church in its persecution of the Jews. To accentuate the horror supposed to be felt by any "good" Christian reader, this anti-semitic text is accompanied by an impressive 9 x 8" folded plate (image: 8 3/8 x 7") in red ink depicting the gruesome scene. The chapter on "Magick" includes a few short references to witches and witchcraft: notably "Vervain and dill, Hinders witches from their will", and several stories recounting methods used to hinder witchcraft. The book was first published in 1696. This second edition, revised and enlarged, includes an account of the author's life. Light overall rubbing and wear to boards, armorial bookplate and private library plate on front pastedown, endpapers browned and a bit foxed, a little scattered browning and light foxing, a few lightly creased corners … [Click Below for Full Description]
