BROWNE, Christopher.
London, John Senex, 1721. Original outline colour, 490 x 550mm. A few small repairs. The third state of Christopher Browne's important map of the Chesapeake Bay, Delaware Bay, Virginia, Maryland and part of Pennsylvania and New Jersey, first issued in 1685. Browne's map is the last major derivative of the Augustine Hermann Map of 1673, reoriented with north at the top and reduced to a single folio sheet. Philadelphia appears on the map. The Northern and Eastern boundaries of Maryland are shown. The boundary for Delaware (then part of Pennsylvania is shown), favouring the claims of Lord Baltimore, rather than the Cape Henelopen boundary, which was finally ratified by the British Courts when the dispute was settled in the 1730s and finally mapped by Mason & Dixon several decades later. New Jersey is divided into East and West Jersey. The shoals and soundings are drawn directly from the Hermann map. The cartouche depicts tobacco and shellfish, two of the significant products of the region during colonial times. From 'A New General Atlas'.

Senex John
Double page engraved map with outline original colouring, 53 x 30 cms. Third state of Christopher Browne's seminal map, first issued in 1685, here with changes to the cartouche and dated 1719. It was published in John Senex's A New General Atlas, London, 1721, and is a revised state of Christopher Browne's map, an important delineation of the Chesapeake Bay region, derived mainly from the earlier surveys of Augustine Herrman (1673). This is also one of the earliest maps to adopt a North-South orientation on the page. The boundary for Delaware (then part of Pennsylvania) is shown, favoring the claims of Lord Baltimore, rather than the Cape Henelopen boundary, which was finally ratified by the British Courts when the dispute was settled in the 1730s and finally mapped by Mason & Dixon several decades later. New Jersey is divided into East and West Jersey. From Senex's New General Atlas, London, 1721. Cumming p.293; Tooley p. 104;

QUR’AN / Translated by Ludovico Marracci, 1612-1700.
Lankisch, Leipzig. [11], 114 pp / 558 pp, [32 index], half calf, new spine, Latin translation by Ludovico Marracci, edited by Christian Reineccius, all edges red, pages toned, few underscoring, St. Charles Borromeo Seminary stamp on title & verso front cover, bookplate of Pastor Sengelmann verso front cover, accession numbers on first leaf. Second edition of Marracci's 1698 Latin version, based on his extensive use of Islamic exegetical manuscripts in the Vatican Library. The best and most beautiful Qur’an edition until Flugel’s edition, and the second Latin translation to be published, after the Bibliander edition, with the Arabic types financed by Cardinal George Barberigo. Not replaced until the appearance of Flugel’s edition, this Qur’an edition represents a first step towards more balanced appreciation of the religion of Islam after centuries of distrust. Nonetheless, the editor still saw himself obliged to have the text preceded by a lengthy refutation of Mohammedan tenets, and a biography of the Prophet ( Culled from native sources). This refutation, the Prodromus ad refuationem Alcorani, had already been published separately seven years before at Rome. Marraccio initial idea to have the Arabic text printed in Holland met with a refusal of Dutch printers, who would not have the text edited with the Prodomus ( arguing that the text and the translation of the Qur’an could do without the refutation). The Latin translation alone, which renders the Arabic original rather literally, with many grammatical and exegetical annotations, was republished in this edition in 1721 b … [Click Below for Full Description]

[ROYAL COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS]
[Medicine, Pharmacy] ~ HANS SLOANE'S PHARMACOPOEIA [ROYAL COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS] Pharmacopoeia Collegii Regalis medicorum londinensis Londini [i.e. London]. Typis G. Bowyer; Impensis R.Knaplock et al., 1721. Folio. [16], 24, 29-154pp, [8]. Text complete despite erratic pagination, errata leaf bound at end, as part of index. Without two terminal advertisement leaves. With an engraved frontispiece. Contemporary panelled calf. Slight rubbing, joints a little cracked (though holding very firm) with short splits and chipping at head and foot. Armorial bookplate of 'Nath. Cholmley Esq.' to FEP, lightly foxed, otherwise a fresh copy. From the recently dispersed library of Hugh Selbourne, with neat ink-stamps to verso of title and p.51 margin. Initially published in 1618, the Pharmacopoeia Collegii Regalis was the first standardised national pharmaceutical work, printed by royal decree, and aimed at standardising practice. Compiled by members of the Royal College of Physicians of London with the primary intention of regulating the composition of medicinal compounds, the work had the subsidiary aim of enforcing the College's monopoly, recently threatened by the newly founded Worshipful Society of Apothecaries. Further editions followed in 1650 and 1677. This fourth edition was the first to appear under the Knaplock imprint, and is notable for the addition of further chemical preparations and vastly improved botanical descriptions; both under the influence of the then president of the College, Sir Hans Sloane (1660-1735). IMAGINARY VOYAGE - THE FIRST ANTARCTIC NOVEL.
Amsterdam, N. Etienne Lucas, 1721. Small 8vo. Nice later (ca. 1850) hcalf. Gilt spine. Titlelabel with gilt lettering. Title-page in red/black. (12),180 pp., 1 folded engraved plate with 3 figures (A,B,C). Wide-margined, clean and fine, printed on good paper. ¶ Very rare first edition - a second edition was published in Paris 1723 - published anonymously, and one of the earliest subterranean voyages and probably the first Antarctic novel. Here Antarctica is uninhabited and it describes the many natural wonders found there. The narrator is caught in a whirlpole near the North Pole - an intrance to the inner earth - and rushed through the earth to emerge at the South Pole.
The work has been attributed to Ludvig Holberg, but this seems not to be the case. It was probably a source work for his Niels Klim (Nicolai Klimii iter subterraneum... 1741). "The "Relation" is probably the first fictional example of what is sometimes referred to as the "holes at the poles" version of the hollow-Earth theory." (Peter Fitting, Subterranean Worlds Antology). The most famous subterranean voyages to antedate Holberg's is Athanius Kircher's "Mundus Subterraneous" (1665), the offered "Relation" and Mouchy's "Lamékis, ou Voyages Extraordinaires d'un Egyptien dans la terre interieure" (1735-37).
Variation in the collations on OCLC.
