Gautier, Henri- ).
Paris, Cailleau, 1721. In- 8, (196 x 122 mm.) [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Original Manuscript Copy. A Beautiful Manuscript Copy of the Notorious Les Trois Imposteurs"The most ubiquitous and influential of the clandestine philosophical manuscripts"One of the rare manuscript copies of a French version of a famous anticlerical work on the "imposture" of the founders of the three monotheistic religions. This short treatise presents a direct assault on those three great religions and challenges the integrity of their founding figures, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad. The polemic claims that these religions lack any substance whatsoever and owe their success in the world to the fear that underlies all of their basic assumptions and pronouncements. In contradistinction to these three frauds, the text claims that Nature as the only god that is acting within the world.Because of its heretical and blasphemous content, this text was long an 'underground' affair, never officially published, showing up in slightly different hand-written versions and frequently seen incorporated with other texts. Its history is still confused by the fact that everyone involved with this work was so secretive - an understandable position to take given the harsh penalties, including death, that could result from being associated with this text in any way. Presented here as an alleged French translation of a non-existent English work - the exist … [Click Below for Full Description]

BOSMAN, Willem.
London, James Knapton, a.o., 1721.Contemporary mottled calf, with red morocco title-label to spine (extremities of spine sl. dam.). With folding engraved map of Guinea and 7 engraved plates. (8),456,(16) pp.Second English edition, first published in Dutch in 1704. - Willem Bosman (1672 - ?), employee of the Dutch West India Company (WIC) and chief Dutch factor at the castle of Elmina, wrote the first authoritative and detailed account of the West Coast of Africa, during a 14 years' residence there. It is the chief source for the knowledge of the Dutch slave-trade during the second half of the 17th century. It also gives an interesting picture of international rivalry, current trade, and the wretched depraved existence of the European factors stationed permanently on the coast. The book is written in the form of letters to a friend. The last two letters are written by other authors. The first is written by David van Nyendael containing a description of Rio Formosa, or Benin. The second is written by Jan Snoek giving a description of the Tooth and Grain Coast. The fine plates depict the trade-settlements on the West African coast. 'Usually recognised as the standard work concerning the Gold Coast of this period' (Cardinall 256). - Fine. Cf. Tiele 174; Cf. Cat. NHSM I, p. 204; Paulitschke 894: 'Sehr wichtiges Reisewerk'; Gay 2808; Work p.6; Hogg 144b.

In 1712 he became lecturer of St Clement Danes in The Strand, London, and later of Christ Church, Newgate Street, with St Leonard's, Foster Lane. In 1716 he received the rectory of Wrington, Somerset, and resigned his fellowship in order to marry. In 1719 he was appointed a canon, and in 1721 sub-dean of Wells Cathedral. MICHELOTTI, Pietro Antonio - BERNOULLI, Johann.
typis Pinellorum fratrum, Venetiis, 1721. MICHELOTTI, Pietro Antonio. [Click Below for Full Description]

Vallisneri, A. [Vallisnieri]
Venezia, Dominico Lovisa, 1721. 4to (21.9 x 16.2 cm). Contemporary limp vellum. Spine with title written in ink in an old hand. Edges speckled red. The rare first edition of this important work on the famous well-preserved fossils of Monte Bolca by the Italian naturalist and medical doctor Antonio Vallisneri, or Vallisnieri (1661-1730). "He is known for being one of the first researchers in medicine to have proposed abandoning the Aristotelian theories for an experimental approach based on the scientific principles suggested by Galileo Galilei. Vallisneri stated that scientific knowledge is best acquired through experience and reasoning. This principle was followed in his anatomical dissections and carefully drawn descriptions of insects. For this reason, his medical career was at the center of heated controversy, as many of his contemporaries could not abandon prevailing medieval theories, even in the face of glaring experimental evidence. He also was keenly interested in the natural sciences, and over his lifetime collected numerous specimens of animals, minerals and other natural objects. Unfortunately his scientific method was limited when it came to interpreting fossil evidence on mountain tops; the only possibility he allowed for was a miraculous Biblical Flood (Flood geology) as the cause for their deposition." (Wikipedia). Neat former owner's inscription, Luigi Moriani, dated 1821, on front free endpaper verso; earlier name on title page erased. Plate IV erroneously numbered XIV, as always. Slight, mostly light, unobtrusive marginal foxing; overall a very nice and c … [Click Below for Full Description]

SENEX, John
engrav'd and sold by J. Senex at the Globe over against St Dunstan's Church Fleetstreet. Where may be had the Zodiac, containing all the Stars hitherto Observed, to which the Moon Planets can at any time apply: very useful in Astronomical Observations, particularly in finding the Longitude at Sea. Also the Solar System describing the Planets and the Comets from Sr. S. I. Newton.by Wil. Whiston M.A., [c1721]., London. The most up to date rendering of the Heavens at the beginning of the eighteenth century Pair of engraved celestial charts, fine original hand colour. At the beginning of the eighteenth century there was a great demand, from scientists and navigators alike, for an extensive and reliable star catalogue and atlas. The charts of John Seller were unreliable, those of Johannes Hevelius unobtainable, and the perfectionist John Flamsteed was reluctant to issue his great celestial atlas. The demand was met by the cartographer and mapseller John Senex, who - with the considerable aid of Edmond Halley - published a chart of the solar system in 1712, a zodiac in 1718, two pairs of star charts, with (as here) and without the zodiac illustrated, of the north and southern hemispheres c1721, and a planisphere in 1740. The charts were, at the time of publication, the most up to date rendering of the heavens available, and proved hugely popular. Even after the posthumous publication of Halley's 'Atlas Coelestis' in 1729, the plates would continue to be issued up until the end of the eighteenth century. (northern hemisphere) 726 by 664mm (28.5 by 26.25 inches); (southern hemisphe … [Click Below for Full Description]
