London - J. D., 1721 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. The very scarce collectd works of John Denns, regarded as Englands first drama critic. The first volume contains two title pages with different dates. The first title page is a more detailed one, is dated 1721, with the second, shorter title page dated 1718. The second volume contains one title page only, dated 1718. John Dennis (1657 - January 6, 1734), was an English critic and dramatist, born in London, the son of a saddler. Neither the poems nor the plays of Dennis are much remembered, although one of his tragedies, a violent attack on the French in harmony with popular prejudice, entitled Liberty Asserted, was produced with great success at Lincoln's Inn Fields in 1704. Dennis is best remembered as a critic, and his earliest works, which lack the rancour that afterwards gained him the nickname of Furius, are regarded as his best. His sense of his own importance approached mania, and he is said to have desired the Duke of Marlborough to have a special clause inserted in the Treaty of Utrecht to secure him from French vengeance. Marlborough pointed out that although he had been a still greater enemy of the French nation, he had no fear for his own security. This tale and others of a similar nature may well be exaggerations prompted by his enemies, but the infirmities of character and temper indicated in them were real. Condition: These volume have been rebound with new pastedowns and end papers. There is some mild wear to the extremities, including a few marks to the boards and mild bumping to the spines. Senex, John.
London: , c1721. Double page engraved map, 500mm x 580mm (24" x 20"), hand colored in outline, title cartouche in lower left corner. Scattered short tears and chips in margins, some minor browning and offsetting, paper a little brittle; still attractive with a crisp and bright image. John Senex (1678-1740) was a well-respected English cartographer that was named geographer to Queen Anne. Around 1719 he published a small book of undecorated maps, but a couple of years later he went upscale and produced a large set of maps of various parts of the world in 1721. This is a somewhat scarce attractive map of the African continent, which includes a decorative cartouche that shows the pyramids, a Moor brandishing a sword, and a shield mounted by a dragon. The map has good detail, even of the interior, for the period, and according to the title, is based on the latest observations. Norwich 76. Van De Gohm 142.

NEWTON, Isaac
London: William and John Innys, 1721 Complete with decorative headpieces, initials, 12 folding engraved plates, woodcut diagrams in text, errata and publishers ads. Contemporary calf, rebacked, covers worn; a couple of plates with small tears repaired, some browning and soiling, but still a good sound copy. Signatures of Mary Francis and John Burridge on the title page, and the bookplate of Arnold Thackray. Third edition, corrected. Regarded as one of the great classics of optics, this work expounds Newton?'s corpuscular or emission theory of light, and is the first work to contain his optical discoveries in a collected form. His set of ?"queries?" (the complete 31, up from 16 in the original edition of 1704) on the nature of matter was considered to be the most important feature of the Opticks and had a profound influence on scientific thought.According to Babson, page 68, ?"This is a reprint of the previous edition (1718, the second issue of second edition), save for a few corrections and the addition of one passage in the last sentence referring to Noah and his sons.?" (This edition was apparently shortened by Newton.) Our copy contains the two pages of publisher?'s advertisements from the previous edition of 1718 (see Babson, 133).

Bel exemplaire..

[Mauritius]:
[N.p., but most likely Mauritius. Early- to mid- 19th century].. Manuscript map, 19 1/4 x 25 inches. On wove paper. Outline coloring. Old fold lines. Some light foxing and offsetting. Very minor loss at folds and from ink burn along the neatline. Very good. Manuscript plan of the harbor of Port Louis, with remarks on the best means for entering the harbor. Though dated 1721 in the cartouche, the plan is a later copy, probably made in the first half of the 19th century. The edges of land and sea have been watercolored for differentiation. The Pointe au Triton and the Ile aux Tonneliers are both labeled with several depths and anchorages noted. The Dutch were the first Europeans to become interested in the island, taking possession in 1598. After exploiting the island's dense forests for a century and introducing the cultivation of sugar cane and cotton, in 1710 the Dutch abandoned the colony. The French soon claimed it as "Ile de France," and the island remained under the control of the French East India Company until 1767. During the long war between France and England at the beginning of the 19th century, Mauritius proved to be an important strategic naval base, and as a result the British took charge of the island in 1810, and the Treaty of Paris confirmed official British possession in 1814. It remained an important sugar producing colony, and in the 20th century agricultural production was expanded to include tea, rice, and other produce.

ENGRAVED THROUGHOUT on silver, elaborate decorative and historiated initials, each page with a fine pictorial frame, text pages with engraved biblical scenes (measuring approximately 55 x 35 mm.) at the top throughout. The thick leaves of the text apparently made up of two pieces of paper, printed on one side and glued together. Very minor wear to joints and extremities, isolated faint stains or marginal smudges, but a really excellent copy of a book often found otherwise--the text clean and fresh, and the original binding especially bright and with only trivial signs of use. The entire contents of this volume are engraved, not printed, and the New Testament scenes are well-realized for their size, with sophisticated use of light. Perhaps the best English engraver of the period, John Sturt (1658-1730) was extremely productive, executing engravings for numerous books, including the famous writing-master John Ayres' most important works on calligraphy.
