Apud Ioann. Billaine. LEATHER BOUND. B00KUYWBGW 1721 Apud Ioann. Billaine (Paris), 2 1/4 x 4 1/8 inches tall x 1 3/4 inches thick full leather bound, blind stamp ruling to covers, engraving of St. Benedict to the first title page, engraving of the followers of Christ taking up their crosses to the second title page, engraving of Benedictine monk taking up his cross (presumably Abbot Gersen) between pages 6-7 of the Imitation, [16], 136, [8], 426, [21] pp., complete, including blank endpapers and blanks between the two works. Rear portion of dual clasps/closures extant but the portion on the front boards is lacking. Covers are rubbed and edgeworn, with cracking to the front hinge, especially along the top, but all holds quite firmly. Old (perhaps 18th century) inscriptions to front pastedown, and 1830 inscription to front free-endpaper. Otherwise, a very good copy - clean, bright and unmarked - of this scarce and fascinating pocket Benedictine devotional. ~KMP~ Two works bound in one, presumably produced for the use of Benedictine monks of the early eighteenth century: (1) The Rule of St. Benedict; and (2) The Imitation of Christ, in an edition compiled by Dom Francis Valgrave, with the authorship of this immortal devotional work here ascribed to Benedictine Abbot John Gersen of Vercelli, Italy. Prior to the text of the Imitation, Dom Valgrave sets forth arguments in favor of Abbot Gersen's authorship. Early in the 20th century, some scholars concluded not only that Abbot Gersen did not author the Imitation, but that he never existed at all! per Sebastiano Domenico Cappuri, Lucca, 1721. Prima edizione. Cm.22x16,4. Pg.(2), 55, (5). Legatura in piena pergamena rigida. Inghirami, II, 82 (anonimo). 300 gr. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
