*** [English translation available upon request. Even blank lottery tickets paid a small amount of interest for a term of 32 years. The interest or annuities on these and previous loans was supposed to be secured by introducing more and more taxes, but Exchequer payments were increasingly in arrears. In 1710 the South Sea Company was set up to combine the various arrangements, by inviting creditors to exchange Exchequer debt for South Sea Stock, and till the Bubble burst in 1720, more and more people did so.The £87,342 4s 5d payable by this document was due annually to those who had bought lottery tickets under 8 Anne c. 4, 1709, and who had exchanged under 5 George I c. 19 in 1719. Bosman, Willem (1672-?after 1703)
Printed for F Knapton, A Bell, etal, London, 1721. [8]+493+[19 (including 3 of advertisements)] pages with folding frontispiece map by Moll and seven engraved plates. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 4 3/4") bound in full leather with 5 raised spine bands and red label in gilt to spine and blind-stamped decorative boards. (Cardinall 256; Goldsmiths 4153; Hogg 144b) Second English edition. It is fortunate that there is a case for a period picture at the beginning of the eighteenth century, as there is for the purpose the brilliant account of the country's human geography by William Bosman. His work A new and Accurate Description of the Coast of Guinea, was written originally as a series of letters between 1700 and 1702. It was first published in book form in Dutch in 1703 and was followed by an accurate English edition two years later. Bosman left the country of 27 July 1702 after a stay of fourteen years. He was chief factor for the Dutch, and his trading interests took him to most parts of Southern Ghana. Bosman's work is easily the most reliable of the major works on the country produced in the eighteenth century. It thoroughly covered Southern Ghana which was fairly well known to Europeans, but was hardly concerned with Ashanti, Brong Ahafo, the inland sections of Volta Region, and Northern Ghana, about which Bosman and other Europeans only had scraps of information collected from local Ghanaian merchants. It is nevertheless possible to make good the deficiency from other sources. The end of the seventeenth century marked a beginning of change in the development of the country's h … [Click Below for Full Description]

Robert Wodrow
Edinburgh: James Watson, 1721. Robert Wodrow was a Scottish minister and historian known for his defense of the Covenanters. His "The History of the Sufferings of the Church of Scotland" was published in two volumes recording and denouncing the persecution of the Covenanters after the Restoration of Charles II to the throne of England and Great Britain. This particular set has interesting clues to its provenance with a label in the upper front corner noting "Case" (T) and "Shelf" (7). Below this is written, "John N. Buchanan/the Presbyterian Residence/Saskaton" and at the very bottom "Days Co./Thames, England/March 1962" when England was just coming out of the Big Freeze of '62. At the bottom of the title page is "Geog Gillespie" and "James Adie" alongside "John Nyrew Buchanan." The first two are in older inks while the Reverend Buchanan is in blue ink. The second volume has the same writing with the exception of Buchanan's name missing. The two volumes are solid and in good condition for their age with a cracked gutter at the front of volume one, edge wear and soiling. Very nice woodcuts chapter decorations both at the beginning of various chapters and the ends as well as some very nice, very showy decorated capitals. Lists of subscribers, and other important participants in the production Good Condition: folios: 2 Volumes: full leather with some scuffs: boards cracked at hinges, front and rear but not yet detached: damage to the spines with top band missing on volume I; some fading and loss of color over the bands: volume one label is chipped: tails on both chipped with e … [Click Below for Full Description]
