BASTON, Thomas.
London Carington Bowles next the Chapter House in St Pauls Churchyard 1721 - First edition. Folio (52 x 37.5 cm), engraved allegorical title-page, 21 engraved naval plates, one double-page, one folding, contemporary sprinkled calf, sometime rebacked, neat restoration to corners and edges, front free endpaper creased, light staining to blank outer margin of first plate, pinhole paper flaw to one plate, an excellent example. A rare and beautiful series of prints of the ships that built an empire. "During the first quarter of the eighteenth century there flourished Thomas Baston, who deserves our attention because he has left us some very spirited illustrations of English men-of-war. Himself a seascape painter, he also did a few etchings from his own designs, but some of his pictures were engraved by Harris, Kirkall, and others. A desirable Baston series is that entitled Twenty-two Prints of several of the Capital ships of his Majesties Royal Navy, which will be found in the Print Room of the British Museum." (E. PICHATTY DE CROISLAINTE (Sieur)
[Click Below for Full Description]

CHAUCER, Geoffrey (ed. John Urry)
First Urry Edition. Folio (395x250mm). pp. [52], 626, 81 glossary, [1, errata]. Engraved portraits of Urry and Chaucer by Pigné and Vertue respectively. Each of The Canterbury Tales is illustrated with an engraving of the pilgrim and throughout, there are very pretty headpieces, tailpieces, fleurons and initials. Contemporary panelled calf, decorated in blind, recently and expertly rebacked. Spine lavishly decorated and lettered ("Chaucer's Works") in gilt, six raised bands and seven compartments. The contents are very good. The front pastedown has the armorial bookplate of Lord Kennet of the Dene. Kennet, has made pencil notes in the margins in a few places where he has taken exception to a biographical note or an editorial decision. In particular "Certaine Balades" are noted to be "Not Chaucer" or "Why Here?" and he flatly contradicts Urry's claim that Chaucer was at Cambridge and disputes the date of birth which Urry gives as 1328 (it is 1343). He has also written (in pencil) on the ffep a note listing those works in the book not by Chaucer. This is an excellent, fresh, tight copy of Urry's celebrated and perhaps notorious edition of Chaucer which was the first to use Roman rather than Gothic type. The three added stories are The Coke's Tale of Gamelyn; The Merchant's Second Tale, or the History of Beryn; and The Adventure of the Pardoner and Tapster at the Inn at Canterbury. Before the early century, Chaucer scholarship and biography was incomplete and haphazard. Urry's edition was the first that took all published versions of Chaucer's work and all available manuscripts … [Click Below for Full Description]

Baglivi, Giorgio
Venice, Bonifacio Viezzeri, 1721, (3), 560, Holzschnitte, 3 Kupferstichtafeln, Pergamenteinband der Zeit frisches Exemplar. "Let the young know that they will never find a more interesting, more instructive book than the patient himself" Baglivi A Collected Works of a Most Celebrated Italian Physician! Second Venice Edition of the main works by Giorgio Baglivi (Dubrovnik 1668-1707 Rome) who echoed Sydenham's call for the practice to be reformed on the bedrock of careful and repeated bedside observations and disease patterns. Together with Boerhave, Baglivi stood in awe of Newton, and much of their physiological work was cast within mechanical framework of medical Newtonianism, although Baglivi insisted that theoretical presuppositions should put be aside when the doctor appears at the patient's bedside. The present work was first published at Lyon and reedited up to the 19th century. Baglivi, who died prematurely at the height of his career, was a pupil and assistant of Malpighi. He held a chair of medical theory at the Collegio della Sapienza in Rome, and was a physician to the Pope. Baglivi was a leader in the Iatrophysical school, he originated the so-called "Solidar pathology" and devoted much time to experimental physiology. Baglivi was a strong advocate of specialism. His collected works contains his classic works including the study which differentiate between smooth and striated muscles and includes his tracts on the tarantula and the earthquake of 1703.
