WAERMA, Meindert.
Bierens de Haan 5217; Houzeau-Lancaster 12119; STCN (5 copies, incl. 3 incomplete); for the author: Mennonite Encyplopedia IV, p. 868. First and only edition of a rare work on the computing of solar and lunar eclipses. The author describes and illustrates a new method using geometry (rule and compass) rather than arithmetic to calculate the data for eclipses for any location worldwide. The work further includes data for the 4 seasons, the dominical letter, the golden number and Easter. It is dedicated to Otto Tholen, "majoor der stad Embden", who also drew 4 of the illustrations.Meindert Waerma was a preacher of the Groningen Old Flemish congregation at Emden in East Friesland, Germany. The present work seems to be his only contribution to astronomy. Many extant copies lack the fold-out errata leaf. With contemporary owner's name on flyleaf, the errata corrected in manuscript and a note "Is van alle fauten gezuiverd" (all errors have been corrected). In very good condition, with only a faint water stain in the upper part of several leaves. Untrimmed.

Trott, Nicholas:
London: B. Cowse, 1721. [4],[ix],[1],[2],[10],435pp. Title printed in red and black, woodcut printer's device on the title (rose and crown). Folio. Contemporary paneled calf, rebacked, spine gilt with raised bands, morocco labels. Endpapers renewed. Very good. Trott, the grandson of Bermuda founder Perient Trott, first came to South Carolina in 1699 as the attorney general of the colony, and was appointed chief justice in 1703. During his time on the bench in South Carolina, he is perhaps best remembered as the Vice Admiralty Judge during the trial of notorious pirate Captain Stede Bonnet. Upon his retirement from public service, he spent the rest of his life as a legal scholar. With the present work, Trott joined his interests in the law with his years of attempting to establish the Church of England within the colonies. Trott's LAWS comprise the collected ecclesiastical acts from South Carolina (pp.1-77), North Carolina (pp.83-104), Virginia (pp.113- 161), Maryland (pp.171-221), Pennsylvania (pp.227-243), New Jersey (pp.249-257), New York (pp.263-280), Connecticut (pp.285-298), Rhode Island (pp.303-304), Massachusetts-Bay (pp.311-337), New Hampshire (pp.343- 348), Barbadoes (pp.353-370), Antego (pp.375-380), Nevis (pp.385- 390), the Leeward Islands (pp.395-403), Jamaica (pp.409-426), and Bermuda (pp.431-435). Each section devoted to a colony is preceded by its own sectional title. Importantly, in the Preface, Trott details his sources for each colony and in many cases they were compiled from original manuscript records. For his work he was awarded a Doctor of Civil Law de … [Click Below for Full Description]

BRADLEY, Richard; AGRICOLA, G(eorg). A(ndreas).
London: P. Vaillant, and W. Mears and F. Clay 1721. First English edition, translated, with additions, by Richard Bradley. "This was the first treatise on cuttings and graftings, and it made Agricola famous." (Hunt 452). Georg Andreas Agricola was a German doctor from Regensburg whose discoveries regarding plant propagation aroused significant interest at the beginning of the eighteenth century. In a book entitled NEU- UND NIE ERHÖRTER DOCH IN DER NATUR UND VERNUNFFT WOHLGEGEGRÜNDETER VERSUCH DER UNIVERSAL VERMEHRUNG ALLER BÄUME, STAUDEN UND BLUMEN-GEWÄCHSE (1716-1717) he first published details of his methods, including the use of a plaster he called "vegetable mummy," to refute exaggerated claims made about his discoveries by another writer. Bradley prepared this English translation and added to it his own preface as well as a translation of the preface from the French edition. The text is illustrated with copies of the plates from the original German edition. These plates depict examples of the regenerative process described by Agricola along with the grafting techniques, tools and structures employed in the various operations. In publishing Agricola's discoveries in England Bradley was doing what he seemed to do best: publicizing the latest horticultural advances and theories at a moment close to their inception. Hunt 452; Henrey 411 Royal 4to (27 x 22 cm); (xxiv) + 300 + (iv) pp. + 22 plates (some folding) with 34 engravings. [MONTESQUIEU, Charles-Louis de Secondat, Baron de]
A Cologne: Chez Pierre Marteau, 1721. In two volumes. 312; 347pp, [1]. Titles in red and black. Attractively bound in contemporary red morocco, elaborately tooled in gilt, A.E.G. Expertly rebacked to style - with contemporary spine laid-on, slightest of wear to extremities. Marbled endpapers a trifle rubbed, light marginal water-staining to first gathering of Vol. I, else internally clean and crisp. An early edition of Montesquieu's biting satire on French, and in particular Parisian society which lambastes the monarchy, government, educational institutions and the Catholic church with abandon. The work purports to be the correspondence of Persian travellers, revealing the opinions of Mohammedans, thus allowing the author greater freedom of expression without fear of reprisal. .
