RELAND (Adrien)

Each volume is housed in a modern orange cloth covered clamshell box, with gold lettering to spine. Originally published in 1691, Anthony Wood's "Athenae Oxoniensis" is a monumental biographical dictionary of the writers and ecclesiastics who had been educated at Oxford. This work is also the first serious attempt at an English biographical dictionary. A deaf, bitter, and suspicious man, Wood quarreled with his family, patrons, and the fellows of his college. This fact can be seen in this work which contains many spiteful criticisms of contemporaries. One such passage in the "Athenae Oxonienses" accused the 1st Earl of Clarendon of corruption, and it led to Wood's conviction of libel and his expulsion from the university. Wood contemplated publishing a third volume of the "Athenae," printed in the Netherlands. The third appeared subsequently as "a new edition, with additions, and a continuation by Philip Bliss" (1813-1820, 4 vols.). Some rubbing to bindings with closed tears along joints. Solida legatura in p. pg. coeva. ITA

Mather, Cotton
London, 1721. vi,304,vii-[1]pp. Contemporary paneled calf, neatly rebacked in matching style, spine gilt, leather label. Minor toning and foxing, a very good copy. This is one of the most curious controversial books in the vast Mather canon. Although Mather's exploration herein of the wonders of nature is intended to exhibit God's presence in the world, the book is essentially scientific and was apparently written with a self- aggrandizing motive. Mather had a flair for science, having helped to introduce smallpox inoculation into America, and in 1714 he began using the initials of a Fellow of the Royal Society after his name. According to Stevens, Mather wrote a letter of thanks to the Society and continued correspondence, but there was much contemporaneous skepticism about whether he had the right to use the august "F.R.S." This work, written while the controversy was still hot, was apparently intended to demonstrate Mather's competence and eagerness to be America's first Royal Society member. Mather's most substantial and personally significant work of science. HOLMES, COTTON MATHER 52-A. SABIN 46253.
