Le tome IX contient les vies des hommes illustres omises par Plutarque contenant: Annibal, Enée, Tulles Hostilius, Aristomenes, Tarquin l'ancien, L. Junus Brutus, Gelon, Cyrus, Jason. Traduites de l'anglais de Thomas ROWE par M. l'abbé Bellenger. Cette lettre du ministre de la Guerre, Claude Le Blanc, témoigne des tractations pour l'achat du gouvernement de la Ville de Navarrenx par François Ferrand d'Escotay, marquis d'Avernes : « Mons[ieur] le Chancelier ayant subdélégué M. de Lesfeuille pour recevoir, Monsieur, le serment que vous auriez deu prester entre ses mains à cause de vostre gouvernement de Navarrins, je luy en envoye l'expédition dans le paquet que j'ay l'honneur de vous adresser, afin que vous puissiés la luy remettre vous mesme.» Claude Le Blanc ajoute de sa main : «J'ay cru qu'il convenoit que cette affaire fust consommée pendant que vous estes à portée de votre gouvernement et je suis persuadé que ce sera le sentiment de M. de Bonas, il conviendra que vous écriviez à M. le chancelier pour le remercier de la facilité qu'il vous a accordé». Like all Brunel editions, this edition would come out of the presses of Rouen. According Rochebilière (No. 771) this is the second edition of the group of P. Brunel, that is to say, Rouen, collation is the same as for No. 770. Ave-Lallement, "Das deutsche Gaunerthum..." I, 231 (nennt die Ausgabe von 1720). Diese Ausgabe bibliographisch nicht nachweisbar. - Sogenanntes "Patent" (im Sinne von Urkunde über bestimmte Rechte), gedruckt zur öffentlichen Verkündung und als Aushang vor Kirchen und Rathäusern. Enthält 34 Absätze mit Maßnahmen gegen die verschiedensten Gruppierungen, die nach damaliger Auffassung reglementiert oder bestraft werden sollten, z. B. Bettler und Vaganten sowie deren Kinder, invalide Soldaten, reisende Handwerks-Burschen, Pfannenflicker, Kramer, Hausierer, Spielleute, fremde Juden, Gauner, Zigeuner, Wilderer etc. - Interessantes Sittengemälde aus der Zeit vor 300 Jahren, nicht nur aus juristischer oder polizeilicher Sicht. - Das sehr gut erhaltene Blatt rückseitig im Falz alt verstärkt. Ernesti, Johann Heinrich Gottfried.
Nürnberg: Johann Andreä Endters, 1721 (actually 1731). First edition, later printing. . 9 3/4 x 7 1/2. 30 leaves, 140 pages, 11 leaves. Most text printed in double columns, within a black border. A full page frontis of Ernesti's printing shop is followed by short histories of 8 famous printers from Coster to Plain, each with an engraved portrait; then a history of printing in Nuremberg with 4 more portraits. The first 44 pages comprise a type specimen, followed by lays-of-the-case for various alphabets and for music type. Then comes the manual with tables for format and imposition diagrams. The final 11 leaves are a German translation of Depositio cornuti typographici (a play performed by printing apprentices). This is lacking its title page, which was neatly excised. Bound in contemporary vellum spine & corners, brown & black speckled boards. Boards are heavily worn; last gathering is loose; one margin missing a piece; contents very good. Comprehensive printers' manual with "A valuable section on type specimens...more than 40 different types in 18 type sizes, an indication of the increase and variety of type at this period." (JPHS, D6). specimen of types, including Greek, Hebrew, exotic types, music, calendar cuts, medicine/apothecary symbols, and printers' flowers. In the Frontis, Ernesti's two presses are dated, respectively, 1440 and 1731--the year this was printed. In Yale's copy, the press is dated 1730. There was a second edition, with 20 more pages, in 1733. Provenance: Kaim, Vienna 1880.
