NIEUWE EN ALDEREERSTE AFTEEKENING VAN T'EYLAND ST. THOMAS. MET ALLE DESSEFS HAVANEN, ANKER PLAATSE EN GELEEGONT HEDEN, IS GELEEGEN BEOOSTEN I. PORTO RICO IN WEST INDIE.

[Amsterdam]. 1719. - Sheet map, 22 1/2 x 38 1/2 inches. Modern color. Handsomely matted and framed. Old fold lines, some minor wear. Very good. Large and handsome chart of St. Thomas, now in the U.S. Virgin Islands but then a Dutch colony, made by the famed Van Keulen cartography firm. This map was originally published as part of a 1720 edition of Van Keulen's DE GROOTE NIEUWE VERMEERDERDE ZEE-ATLAS., a significant work containing one hundred maps and charts (cf. Phillips). The chart shows the entire island on a very large scale, with its topographical features and harbor depths, as well as the forts and settlements. Two insets on the right show a detailed view of the harbor of St. Thomas and the harbor of the neighboring island of St. John. Along the bottom are five profile elevations, showing the island from different angles. The map is one of the handsomest maps of the island made in the colonial period. Johannes van Keulen enrolled in the Dutch booksellers' guild in 1678 and began publishing sea charts and atlases. That same year, his son, Gerard (1678- 1726), was born, who would go on to become a skillful engraver and a significant asset to the firm. "This son was endowed with talent. He was a skillful engraver and proficient in mathematics and navigational science. Gerard was responsible for establishing the scientific basis of the firm of Van Keulen" (Koeman). Gerard van Keulen took over the family business in 1704 and would go on to become the hydrographer for the East India Company in 1714, a prestigious and important office. His son, Johannes, took up the family business upon his death in 1726. PHILLIPS ATLASES 5693. KOEMAN, KEU 31.

.         "Carte tres curieuse de la Mer du Sud...from Atlas historique ou nouvelle introduction a l'histoire..."from Atlas historique ou nouvelle introduction a l'histoire

Amsterdam, 1719. ONE OF THE MOST ELABORATELY ENGRAVED MAPS EVER PUBLISHED Hand-colored copper-plate engraving: 33" x 561/4" References: R. V. Tooley, The Mapping of America (London, 1985), 130; J. Goss, The Mapping of North America (Secaucus NJ, 1990), plate 52; G. McLaughlin & N. H. Mayo, The Mapping of California as an Island: An Illustrated Checklist (Saratoga, 1995), no. 190. Henri Châtelain's large-scale map is considered one of the most decorative and desirable engraved maps of the Western Hemisphere ever produced due to its fine detail and intricate engraving. This map was published in Atlas Historique, a comprehensive and highly informative seven-volume atlas for which Châtelain created the maps and Nicholas Gueudeville wrote the text. The map, which is primarily based on Nicholas De Fer's 1713 map, focuses on North and South America, which occupy the center, but also includes the entire Pacific with the East Indies, Japan, and Australia as well as all of the Atlantic, with a large portion of Europe and Africa presented. Grandiose and elaborately engraved, it is of wall-chart proportions, and it includes a veritable pictorial encyclopedia of the Western Hemisphere. Interestingly, even at this relatively late date, California is depicted as an island. However, Châtelain's depiction of this geographical curiosity shows uncertainty, as can be seen by the faintly drawn eastern coast of the land mass. In fact, Châtelain even includes an annotation that states that many modern thinkers believe California to be a part of the mainland. In a similar manner, the coastline of Australia is convoluted and the coast of the western half of Tierra del Fuego is also lightly drawn. Nonetheless, the map provides a wealth of cartographic information in great detail, including the correct depiction of the Great Lakes and a relatively accurate course for the Mississippi River. The paths of the major voyages in the Pacific, including those of Magellan and LeMaire, are noted and medallion portraits of celebrated explorers from the Age of Discovery are shown. The highly decorative cartouches and splendid vignettes are meant to give a picture of native flora and fauna as well as of the customs and lifestyles of the indigenous people in the Americas, subjects which were both unusual and enticing to Europeans at that time. There are vignettes illustrating sugar mills, mining, Native Americas hunting and fishing, as well as a more exotic, titillating depiction of an Aztec pyramid and human sacrifice. In the space between Asia and the Americas is an elaborate view of a beaver colony in Niagara Falls, and the Northern Atlantic region includes a vignette of cod fisheries in Newfoundland, illustrating the two main products at the center of trade in the New World. Two very involved cartouches on the lower sheet include inset maps and city plans of Acapulco, Panama, Vera Cruz, and other New World cities, and there are views of the Strait of Gibraltar and the Cape of Good Hope..

Within a few years Law\\\'s companies thus got almost complete control over France\\\'s overseas trade, its currency and public finances.\"Law was transforming the Mississippi Company into a trading-cum-financial company and controlling the State?s finances, most notably tax collection and debt management\" Antoin Murphy. In 1720 Law was appointed Controller-General of Finances for the Kingdom of France. Here printed in full between May 1716 to January 1721in volumes V-VI are the one hundred and twenty-two Memoires, Lettres Patentes, Edits, Declarations, Arrets & ?autres Piéces des Opérations sur lesquelles le fond de l?Histoire du Systeme des Finance? ?"?" includingMay 2nd 1716 Lettres Patentes authorising the incorporation of John Law?s Banque Générale;April 10th 1717 arret ordering that notes should be accepted in payment of all taxes and other other royal revenues;September 6th 1717 Lettres Patentes establishing the Compagnie d?Occident granting monopoly of trade with Louisaiana and the absolute control of the internal affairs of the colony for 25 years ?" the birth of the Mississippi project;December 4th 1718 Declaration du Roi converting the Banque Générale into the Banque Royale as from January 1st 1719 becoming a government concern administered in the name and under the authority of Louis XV ?" in effect the nationalisation of the bank;of June 17th 1719 authorising the issue of 50,000 shares of the par value of 500 livres in the Compagnie des Indes Orientale & des Chines for public subscription at a premium of 10%;June 20th 1719 arret provided that for every single share in the new company intending purchaser must possess four in the old ?" popularly known as the ?mothers? and ?daughters? shares leading to an immediate run on the old shares; the notorious arret of February 27th 1720, which was rigorously enforced, forbidding any person keeping gold or silver above a value of 500 livres;March 5th 1720 arret in which the government undertook to pay 9000 livres in banknotes for each share ?" which led to the Systeme?s ruin. The bubble burst in 1720, cash payments were suspended and Law fled from the country, leaving behind many of his former supporters ruined.

Porträt von Johann Gottlob Imanuel Breitkopf

1719 - Paris, 1719. Dissected and laid on linen, total 890 x 790mm. Splits in folds of linen. A rare map of the Aragon region, once owned by Honoré Charles Michel Joseph Reille, Marshal of France, who campaigned in the area during the Peninsula War. Although it was originally published during the War of the Quadruple Alliance (1718-20), in which Britain, France, Austria and the Dutch Republic rounded on Philip V of Spain because of his expansionist plans in Italy, it was still an important map during the Peninsula War. Reille (1775-1860), was an extremely important figure in Napoleon Bonaparte's army: he was Commander of the Army of Portugal at Vitoria during the Peninsula War, and commanded the II Corp (25,000 men) at Waterloo. He was later made a Maréchal of France and is buried in Pére Lachaise cemetary in Paris in the tomb of his father-in-law, Maréchal Messéna.

1719. Paris, Jean-Michel Garnier, 1719. (8),xxxvi,364,(4)pp. 4to. Contemporary calf (rubbed, spine dam. & hinges weak). With the bookplate of Armand Maior de Lille on inside front cover & illegible library stamp on titlepage. No place, 1719. 20pp. Dom Jean Liron (who died in 1749) was a benedictine monk of the Congregation of St. Maur. His work is placed exactly between the Bibliothèque françoise by François de La Croix and Antoine Du Verdier (both published in 1585), and l'Histoire littéraire de la France that was to be published from 1733 to 1736. Initially Liron wanted to write a Bibliothèque générale des auteurs de France. However, understanding that it would be impossible for a single person to complete this he decided instead to write a series of bibliothèques regionales and started with the Diocèse of Chartres. A next volume, the Bibliothèque d'Anjou was only published long after his death, in 1897. After the general introduction Liron explains in detail his method of working. This section ends with a catalogue of works which he used for writing this work, which gives an idea what bibliography was like in the beginning of the 18th century. Each entry is both biographical and bibliographical. The entries are chronologically ordered and often in the first entries Liron mentions sources that only exist in manuscript. Liron deserves an eminent place in the history of bibliography but is lacking in Besterman (Les Débuts de la Bibliographie Méthodique) and in Malclès (La Bibliography). However, he is cited in Besterman's A world of bibliography (1230). The inserted (anonymous) letter is an attack on Liron and his work. A contemporary hand on the titlepage gives the name of the real author.
