[Photo Album]: Mount Alison Ladies College

Sackville, New Brunswick, Canada: , 1917-1920, 1719. Sackville, New Brunswick, Canada. 1917-1920. Oblong octavo measuring 6" x 8". String-tied black cloth over flexible paper boards with "photographs" stamped on the front board. Contains 62 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring around 2.5" x 3" and 3.5" x 5.5" with captions. Very good album with worn edges, some detached pages, and tears with near fine photographs.A photo album kept by a woman while attending Mount Allison Ladies College. The photos in this album are from the years 1917-1920. Throughout the album there are group photos of the faculty and students around campus as well as candid images of the women. These include girl's posing in the gymnasium, participating in a marching drill on the campus grounds, and in various costumes. One photo from November 1917 shows a girl posing with a gun, another shows two women pretending to get married with one dressed as a groom and the other a bride, and a variety of Halloween costumes. The girls are also seen cuddling in bed together in their pajamas and posing with school pennants. There are also group photos of the graduating classes of 1918 and 1919 with girls in full graduation cap and gown. One section of photos shows the "Lawn Drill" which was a favorite part of the closing exercises and involved the girls marching and forming shapes on a field with their bodies. Towards the end of the album there are photos of men in World War I with images of men in uniform and one of two men posing by a canon. Beginning in 1854 the "Ladies College" was formed as a branch of the Mount Allison Boy's Academy in Sackville, New Brunswick, Canada. An editorial written by Mary Electa Adams, a teacher at Mount Allison in 1855, discussed how instead of the normal method of teaching women Mount Allison's programs aimed at "producing women of intellectual Vigour." Adams felt that "women needed and deserved a rigorous academic program." The college was the first in the British Empire to award women a bachelor's degree. An interesting collection of photographs depicting a young woman's education during World War I. .

First edition of the author's magnum opus, a monumental bio-bibliography of Syriac literature based on the manuscript holdings of the Vatican Library. This edition was almost entirely destroyed by fire which broke out in 1768 in Assemani’s apartment near the Vatican Library. The large part of this monumental work was collected by Assemani himself, who returned from a collecting expedition to Egypt and Syria that took place from 1715 to 1717, carrying more than 150 manuscripts, which were placed in the Vatican Library, where they formed the nucleus of the library’s subsequently famous collection of Oriental manuscripts. Joseph Assemani was one of the Lebanese scholars who studied in Rome, and who had a profound impact on the field of Oriental studies in Europe in the 18th century. Assemani was appointed Prefect, devoting most of his life carrying out an extensive plan for editing and publishing the most valuable Syriac, Arabic, Ethiopic, Armenian, Persian, Hebrew and Greek manuscripts kept in the Vatican Library. Besides his various publications on a wide range of Oriental subjects, this work is considered his best achievement. It was supposed to contain twenty volumes, of which six were supposed to cover Oriental languages, four Greek and the last ten other languages, but he was only able to finish three volumes before his death. He was succeeded by another member of the Assemani family, Istifan Awad Assemani (1709-1782), who continued cataloguing the manuscripts in the Vatican Library and other libraries in Italy.         A New Map of the English Empire in North America

1719 - Sheet Dimensions: 20.25 x 24.25 in. Framed Dimensions: 31 x 34.75 in. Copper-plate engraving, outline color. “A New Map of the English Empire in America,” a highly detailed map of the English colonies in North America, is a second state of a map first published by Robert Morden in 1695. The title cartouche states the map was revsied by Senex in 1719, with royal arms above the cartouche inscribed with a dedication to Hewer, Edgy Hewer of Clapham Esq. This map gives us a fascinating glance of the known knowledge of the geography and topography, as well as the current settlements, of the United States and Canada in the late 17th and early 18th centuries by the English. The detailed depictions of the cities and towns along the eastern coast include Boston, Cape Cod, Long Island, Philadelphia, Jamestown, Norfolk, Charlestown and Cape Canaveral. Topographical and geographical information, such as the Chesapeake Bay (Chefapeak Bay), Hudson’s Bay (Hudsons Bay), the Appalachian Mountians (Apalitea), the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River (R. Mitchispi or Rio Grande) are depicted.

        Institutiones Rei Herbariae

Paris: E Typograpia Regia, 1719. Third edition. leather_bound. Contemporary mottled calf. 3 vols. Very good. 25 x 19 cm. Vol.1 text. [A3, *-***4, E4, I4, A-Ssss4, A4, A-G4, H2.] Engraved title and 252 plates; Engraved title and 237 plates. Illustrated with 3 copper-engraved titles, copper-engraved title-page emblem, copper-engraved initials and headpieces, woodcut tailpieces, and 489 full-page copper-engraved plates. First published in French as Elemens de botanique in 1694, this edition was published in the year that Tournefort embarked on his travels to the East to collect plants and make other observations, spending two years travelling through the islands of Greece, Constantinople, the Black Sea, Armenia and Georgia. This work however is based on his western European tours and experience. Claude Aubriet...attracted the attention of Tournefort, who commissioned him to make the engravings for his celebrated Elemens de botanique, 1694 which in its later Latin version Institutiones  rei herbariae 1700 had so far-reaching an effect on plant classification by defining the genera. These illustrations, made no doubt under  Tournefort's direct supervision, are remarkable for the accuracy of their dissections." - BLUNT, p. 124. This is the final edition of the work and has more plates than the two preceeding ones." NISSEN p.1997. Bookseller label of W. Junk, Berlin. Text and plate volumes clean, toning to endpapers, modest extremity wear, spines gilt with six compartments.

[Photo Album]: Album of British Nurse, 1917-1931

, 1917-1931, 1719. 1917-1931. Oblong small quarto. String-tied gray card covers with "Photographs" in darker gray ink on front wrap. 89 black and white or sepia-toned gelatin silver images. Various sizes, mostly between 1.75" x 2.5" and 2.5" x 3.5", with some larger. Well-captioned images. Ownership "name" ("Myself") on front wrap, two images lacking (but the album is unpillaged), else near fine. Album created by a British nurse, first caring for invalided soldiers in WWI and then continuing on during her service at various private homes and public hospitals. Although the photographs are well-dated, they are not laid out strictly chronologically. The earliest seem to be devoted to her tenure at Torbay Hospital in (confusingly) Torquay in South Devon between 1917 and 1918 caring for soldiers (the current Torbay Hospital was built in 1925, so presumably this was an impromptu hospital set-up for war service). Afterwards it seems that she might have worked as a private nurse on a number of estates (Sherrington Manor and others), at Beach Hill Nursing Home in Barnstable (where she is seen holding babies), and finally ending up at Golden Square Throat Hospital in London. A good number of the pictures are of the compiler and other nurses in their uniforms, some with recovering soldiers. Others are of her traveling, in a bathing costume, and near the end in 1929 in a bridal gown. Also included are a few pictures of Golden Square Throat Hospital and its staff, as well as a few "photostrip" images of the compiler, some taken at Selfridge's. While the compiler has identified many of those in the album, she has not identified herself. A little research and some triangulation could certainly result in a possible positive identification of the compiler. A pleasing album with good quality images and which is nicely subject specific. .

Basia: or, the Charms of Kissing. Translated from the Latin of Catullus and Secundus, and the Greek of Menage.

London: Printed, and sold by T. Bickerton, at the Crown in Pater-Noster-Row, 1719. - 38, [2]pp., 8vo. With a final errata leaf, the corrections made to the text in a contemporary hand. A little marginal browning, but a fine and attractive copy in red morocco-backed cloth by Sangorski and Sutcliffe, spine gilt-lettered. First edition, the attribution to Tooly is from Richard Rawlinson s manuscript collections for a new edition of Wood s Athenae Oxonienses. These are imitations of some of the more erotic verses in the classical and neo-classical canon, e.g.: Haste then, my Love, while Lips to Lips we join, Let Thy sweet Breath preserve Thy life, and Mine: With Raptures spent, yet raging with Desire, Involv d in mutual Folds, we ll both expire: We ll sink United to the Shades below, Like Streams, that mingling in one Current flow. Foxon, English Verse 1701-1750, p. 815. Three editions were published within a year, and at least the second edition, which I was able to compare with this one, was reset and not a reissue. ESTC locates this first edition at the Bodleian, Trinity College Cambridge, Edinburgh, and Huntington. OCLC adds National Library of Scotland, Trinity Dublin, Latrobe, and Minnesota.         Life and Adventures of Robinson Crusoe

1719. DEFOE, Daniel. The Life and Strange Surprizing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, of York, MarinerÂ… WITH: The Farther Adventures of Robinson CrusoeÂ… London: W. Taylor, 1719. Two volumes. Octavo, period-style full paneled black morocco gilt, red morocco spine label, raised bands, marbled endpapers. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $17,000.Third edition, first issue, of DefoeÂ’s masterpiece, published within two months of the extremely rare first edition, with the engraved frontispiece portrait of Crusoe by Clark and Pine, together with a scarce first edition, second issue of the second part, with folding map of the world, beautifully bound.""Perhaps there exists no other workÂ… in the English language, which has been more generally read and more universally admired, than the Life and Adventures of Robinson Crusoe"" (Sir Walter Scott). It ""is the most popular, delightful and extraordinary of all Defoe's works, and has lost none of its original attraction. Dr. Johnson observed, 'Nobody ever laid it down without wishing it were longer'"" (Lowndes, 613-14). It also established a central type of English literature, ""the lonely human being subduing the pitiless forces of natureÂ… [and] much of science fiction is basically Crusoe's island changed to a planet"" (PMM 180). The first part was published on April 25, 1719; a second edition was published May 9, and the third and fourth editions quickly followed, on June 4 and August 7. This is Hutchins' first issue (of two) of the third edition, with tailpiece depicting a lion instead of a phoenix and all other points. The sequel, Farther Adventures, in which Crusoe and Friday make a return trip to their island, was published August 20, 1719. This copy of Farther Adventures is first edition, second issue, with advertisement on verso of [A4]. Part I bound with final two leaves of advertisements; Part II bound with last five leaves of advertisements. Lovett 3. Hutchins 3T, pp. 74-78, 97-112. Moore 412, 417. Linear Perspective: or, a New Method of Representing justly all manner of Objects as they appear to the Eye in all Situations. A Work necessary for Painters, Architects, &c. to Judge of, and Regulate Designs by. [Bound with:] New Principles of Linear Perspective: or the Art of Designing on a Plane the Representations of all sorts of Objects, in a more General and Simple Method than has been done before.

London: R. Knaplock, 1715; 1719. First edition of Taylor's important work on perspective, here bound with its second edition which contains significant new material. "Despite the impulses he received from other mathematicians, Taylor's contribution to the theory of perspective remains highly original. He plucked from the works of others the ideas that were mathematically the most fruitful, and taking these as a starting point, he built up a theory that was far more general, comprehensive and systematic than anything seen before" (Andersen, p. 498). "Like all Taylor's writing, his book on linear perspective was so concise that Bernoulli characterized it as "abstruse to all and unintelligible to artists for whom it was more especially written." Even the second edition, which nearly doubled the forty-two pages of the first, showed little improvement in this matter. Its effect, nevertheless, was very substantial, since it passed through four editions, three translations, and twelve authors who prepared twenty-two editions of extended expositions based on Taylor's concepts. He developed his theory of perspective in a formal and rigorous fashion in a sequence of theorems and proofs. The most outstanding and original of his ideas in this field were his definition and use of vanishing points and vanishing lines for all lines and planes, and of his development of a theory and practice for the inverse problem of perspective that later served as a basis for work by Lambert and for the development of photogrammetry. Taylor also made free use of the idea of associating infinitely distant points of intersection with parallel lines, and he sought to devise methods for doing geometric constructions directly in perspective" (DSB XIII, 267). "Taylor's Linear Perspective consists of five sections, the first of which contains fundamental definitions and theorems. The second section treats a number of problems related to determining perspective images. The third and fourth sections take up problems of shadows and reflections in the picture plane, and finally, the fifth section presents some inverse problems of perspective. In New Principles Taylor added two more topics which appear as appendices. "In the first appendix, Taylor dealt with the problem of finding the image of a line upon an irregular surface as a shadow. He had previously outlined the shadow procedure in a description of Linear Perspective he wrote for Philosophical Transactions... "Taylor's second appendix bears the heading "A New Theory for mixing colours taken from Sir Isaac Newton's Opticks". Here Taylor adapted Newton's model for explaining the mixing of light rays - later known as Newton's colour circle - to the mixing of colour pigments. Taylor's inclusion of this appendix manifests his wish to have the art of painting based on scientific principles. For drawing lines he presented a very advanced theory, partly of his own devising, and for mixing colours he applied the newest theory of light and colours" (Andersen, pp. 500-1). Brook Taylor (1685-1731) was born in Edmonton, Middlesex. He entered St. John's College, Cambridge in 1701, graduated in law in 1709, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1712, and was appointed its Secretary in 1714. "From 1712 to 1724 he was a frequent contributor to Philosophical Transactions, submitting papers on mathematics and natural philosophy. In addition, he found time to practise music and to paint. According to his first biographer, his grandson William Young, Taylor was an accomplished landscape painter... It is very likely that Taylor's interest in classical geometry, combined with his painting activities, led him to study perspective" (ibid., pp. 494-6). K. Andersen, The Geometry of an Art, 2007. For a very detailed analysis of both works, see Andersen's Brook Taylor's Work on Linear Perspective. A Study of Taylor's Role in the History of Perspective Geometry, 1992. Arnaud de Vitry 787. Two works bound in one contemporary calf, 8vo (196 x 120 mm), pp. [iv], 42, [2, publisher's catalogue], with 18 engraved plates; pp. [xiv], 70, with 13 folding engraved plates. Contemporary calf, covers decorated in blind, hinges worn and capitals chipped, title page with some light marginal browning, but in all a very good and genuine copy.

*****. In-12. Collation : (20), 21-265, (19) pp. Veau glacé, dos à nerfs orné, tranches rouges. (Reliure de l'époque.).
