(POPE, Alexander) [Hill, Aaron]
[London: s.n, n.d., ca. 1718]. First separate edition. 2 pp. broadsheet. Folio (12 x 6 inches). The first separate printing of Aaron Hill's Preface in reply to Alexander Pope's criticism of his Northern-Star, a poem published in 1718 and dedicated to Peter the Great of Russia. "Hill had, apparently through Lintot, asked Pope's opinion of The Northern Star. Lintot, according to Hill, reported to him that Pope though 'Printing any thing in Praise of the Czar of Russian wou'd be receiv'd as a Satyr on the Government'" (Guerinot). Hill questions Pope's criticisim and professes he would have preferred that the poem by critiqued on the merits of its style and execution, than to be faulted for insulting the government. He criticises Pope's Windsor Forest for its forced classicism and further lashes out at the popular poetic diction of his age, in which "... all our Women are Nymphs, Angels, or Goddesses; our Men, Demi-hero's; all our Soldiers are invincible; all our Generals beyond Caesar; all our Kings like Augustus ..." The broadsheet is without imprint, but may have been printed by either Berington or Morphew, printers of The Northern-Star. Hill and Pope clashed frequently, though they were not bitter enemies and did exchange letters. Later editions of Hill's poem excluded the Preface, presumably at the author's request. Rare, not in ESTC. Cf. Foxon H225 & Guerinot, p. 74 (for Hill's poem); not in ESTC. Fine, with contemporary manuscript addition to title, explaining that the Preface is "To a poem called, The Northern Star, by Aaron Hill"

CHEREAU, François, the elder (1680-1729), 1718 after LARGILLIERE, Nicholas de (1656-1746)
: 1718 : Paris : Engraved portrait, image 389 x 276mm; plate mark 400 x 290mm; leaf 565 x 418mm. A fine impression with good margins, untrimmed edges. : A fine portrait of Mathieu François Geoffroy (1644-1708), French pharmacist and holder of various offices of the Pharmaceutical Society of Paris. As the legend explains it was commissioned as an act of filial piety by his second son, Claude Joseph. Later, in 1737, he commissioned a similar portrait of his brother, Etienne François. Largillière specialised in portraits of the rich middle classes and his output was prodigious. He was director of the Académie Royale in his eighties, and was pivotal in the transition from the baroque to the rococo portrait style during the reigns of Louis XIV and Louis XV.

Its engraved title-page, often lacking, showing the interior of a pharmacy is the finest from any Dutch pharmacopoeia. Added is the very rare supplement. With two bookplates. The engraved title-page of the Pharmacopoea Almeriana, part of its index, and the supplement come from another copy and are loosely inserted. The latter two are soiled and the last two pages worn, but affecting only a few lines, the frontispiece, however, is fine; a waterstain in the first few leaves of ad 1, but otherwise in good condition.

JOBLOT (Louis)
[Click Below for Full Description]

James Tyrrell
London: D. Browne et al. Condition: Fair. Folio, pp. [ii]-xv + [xvi] errata + [1]-739 +blank + [22] index + [23] ads; full period calf stamped in black; contemporary morocco spine label gilt; boards starting to detach (with leather loss) but still held by cords; tips worn; several small dings and gouges; later hand-lettered library code to heel of spine; library ink stamp to top edge; bookplates to pastedown; ink stamp, embossed stamp, and library numerals to title leaf; embossed stamp to pp. 17-18; leaves generally clean; library pocket and electronic tag to rear pastedown; a reasonably attractive ex-library copy. Properly de-accessioned. Boards. Later edition printed in the year of the author's death. The first dialogue appears to have been printed under this title as early as 1691. The Dialogues have to do with the legitimacy of the claim for the divine right of Kings and the nature of English Constitutional government. Tyrrell also explores the question of under what circumstances, if any, a monarch may forfeit his title to the crown. The reigns considered include those of King William, the Norman, King James II, King William and Queen Mary, King Charles I, and others. Tyrrell (1643-1718) was a Whig historian and a friend of John Locke.

Matthew Prior
1718. Very Good: New-ish endpapers with bookplate of Rt. Hon. Lord Greyde Wilton: occasional foxing: very occasional: some signs of wear on leather boards but overall, an outstanding example: rare and special. So the story goes that this subscription edition was set up by the publisher Jacob Tonson and Alexander Pope to assist Matthew Prior with getting back on his feet after problems with his diplomatic post after a shift in power during the early 18th century left him in dire straits. Appparently, Prior was considered well worth saving as htis volume is gorgeous. Wonderful heavy leather binding has lightly embossed details on the cover with gilt stamped on the spine under a red label with "Prior's Poems". The bands to hold the boards in place do show and are still sturdy. The spine itself has some chipping to the gilt embossing and there is some chipping/scuffing to the edges. The endpapers look newer than the other paper but is a nice weight and sets the rest off nicely. The actual text itself is amazing: the Frontispiece is virtually pristine with no tears or probes that I see other than age-appropriate weathering and light discoloration. The title page has another wonderful vignette and the tiniest spot of foxing. The rest of the text is in similar Condition: please do not hesitate to email with questions or for more pictures. Just a lovely book with great heavy paper: all 1500 subscribers to Prior's well-being should be pleased at the contribution made to the arts. Very Good Condition: Giant Folio (18 3/4" X 11 3/4"): Leather with embossed details stamped leaves in ea … [Click Below for Full Description]

First edition in French of one of the principal accounts of Russia published during the 18th century, originally issued in Dutch, Amsterdam 1711. Cornelis de Bruyn, the Dutch traveller and painter, also known for his account of his journey through the Levant, was the first traveller to whom the tsar gave permission to make drawings of the towns and villages in the Russian provinces, and the superb engravings are from on-the-spot drawings by the author. The book is arguably the best authority for costumes of the era in the countries visited, for the Assyrian antiquities of Persepolis at that time, and for the views of cities and their natural history. His account also "details the route taken by Everard Ysbrants Ides, the Russian ambassador to China, and contains an account of his encounter with William Dampier at Batavia. SECOND EDITION (first octavo), second issue with title dated 1718 but with the leaf of advertisements at end (Babson states this leaf is missing in this issue). The mathematical tracts were omitted 'as not belonging to the subject', and the number of queries at the end of book three was increased from 16 to 31, including the celebrated query no. 28 on the nature of light 'Are not all Hypotheses erroneous which have hitherto been invented for explaining the Phenomena of Light, by new Modification of the Rays?' (Babson 134). Newton's classic work describing his fundamental experiments on the color spectrum also explains such optical phenomena as the rainbow, "Newton's rings," and the double refraction of the Icelandic spar. Newton opens his study with the claim, "My Design in this Book is not to explain the Properties of Light by Hypotheses, but to propose and prove them by Reason and Experiments." Longus
Paris: Not Stated, 1718. Bound in the original leather with gilt lettering and decoration. Scarce. A very important work, of which only 250 copies were said to have been printed. Here in the original leather binding and exceptional unrestored condition. The plates are engraved by Benoit Audran after Phillipe d'Orleans, Regent of France from 1715, under the instruction of Coypel in 1714, with the frontis after Coypel himself. Without 'des Petits Pieds' from the 1728 edition which sometimes is bound in later but is not meant to be in the original first edition as it was suppressed until 1728. This is clearly the original binding and is untouched. Collated, complete. With 'Bibliotheque de Mr A. Houbigant' bookseller labels on the front and rear pastedowns. Daphnis and Chloé is the only known work of the 2nd century AD Greek novelist and romancer Longus. Its style is rhetorical and pastoral, its shepherds and shepherdesses are wholly conventional, but the author imparts human interest to this idealized world. Daphnis and Chloe resembles a modern novel more than does its chief rival among Greek erotic romances. Longus was a Greek novelist and romancer, and author of Daphnis and Chloé. Very little is known of his life, and it is assumed that he lived on the isle of Lesbos, the setting for Daphnis and Chloe, during the 2nd century AD. It has been suggested that the name Longus is merely a misinterpretation of the last word of Daphnis and Chloe's original title in the Florentine manuscript. Craig, John
Londini [London]: Ex Officina Pearsoniana, 1718. SOLE EDITION, 4to, pp. [viii], 92. Early twentieth-century half dark green roan, marbled paper boards, spine lettered in gilt. Some spotting, small piece of blank corner torn from final leaf. Corners a bit worn, spine and joints repaired and hinges neatly relined. Institutional blind stamp to title-page causing several small perforations. An important early work using Newtonian calculus. John Craig (c.1663-1731) studied under David Gregory in Edinburgh before moving to London, where he became one of the first in Britain to grasp the importance of the calculus. He published several major works and was considered one of the most important mathematicians of his day. This work, the last major mathematical text that Craig published, had in fact been the first he began writing and features Newton's fluxional notation - Craig's other works demonstrate Leibniz's differential calculus, including the first appearance of the integral symbol in England. This book is also notable for its preface in which Craig recounts the process through which he discovered this calculus and his interactions with Newton, including showing him the manuscript.

MOIVRE, ABRAHAM DE
London: William Pearson for the Author, 1718. First edition. FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST TEXTBOOK ON PROBABILITY THEORY. "De Moivre expanded his paper 'De mensura sortis' (written in 1711), which appeared in Philosophical Transactions, into The Doctrine of Chances (1718). Although the modern theory of probability had begun with the unpublished correspondence (1654) between Blaise Pascal and Pierre de Fermat and the treaties De Ratiociniis in Ludo Aleae (1657; 'On Ratiocination in Dice Games') by Christiaan Huygens of Holland, de Moivre's book greatly advanced probability study. The definition of statistical independence--namely, that the probability of a compound event composed of the intersection of statistically independent events is the product of the probabilities of its components--was first stated in de Moivre's Doctrine. Many problems in dice and other games were included, some of which appeared in the Swiss mathematician Jakob (Jacques) Bernoulli's Ars conjectandi (1713; 'The Conjectural Arts'), which was published before de Moivre's Doctrine but after his 'De mensura.' He derived the principles of probability from the mathematical expectation of events, just the reverse of present-day practice" (Britannica). Complete with dedication to Isaac Newton. London: W. Pearson for the Author, 1718. Quarto, modern antique-style paneled calf. Very minor scattered foxing; text generally clean with wide margins. A beautiful copy of a classic and highly influential work. Fine.

MOIVRE, Abraham de.
London: W[illiam]. Pearson for the Author, 1718. First edition, and an unusually fine copy without any restoration, of this classic on the theory of probability, the first original work on the subject in English. "De Moivre's book on chances is considered the foundation for the field of probability and statistics" (Tomash). "De Moivre's masterpiece is The Doctrine of Chances" (DSB). "His work on the theory of probability surpasses anything done by any other mathematician except P. S. Laplace. His principal contributions are his investigations respecting the Duration of Play, his Theory of Recurring Series, and his extension of the value of Daniel Bernoulli's theorem by the aid of Stirling's theorem" (Cajori, A History of Mathematics, p. 230). "He was among the intimate friends of Newton, to whom this book is dedicated. It is the second book devoted entirely to the theory of probability and a classic on the subject" (Babson 181). De Moivre's interest in probability was raised by Pierre-Rémond de Montmort's Essay d'analyse sur les jeux de hazard (1708), the first separately-published work on probability. "The [Doctrine] is in part the result of a competition between De Moivre on the one hand and Montmort together with Nikolaus Bernoulli on the other. De Moivre claimed that his representation of the solutions of the then current problems tended to be more general than those of Montmort, which Montmort resented very much. This situation led to some arguments between the two men, which finally were resolved by Montmort's premature death in 1719 ... De Moivre had developed algebr … [Click Below for Full Description]

The collected works of Saint John Chrysostom, archibishop and patriarch of Costantinople, probably the finest preacher of every time. Chrysostomos, anglicized as Chrysostom, means "golden-mouthed" in Greek and denotes his celebrated eloquence. Chrysostom was among the most prolific authors in the early Christian Church, The Orthodox and Eastern Catholic Churches honor him as a saint and count him among the Three Holy Hierarchs, together with Basil the Great and Gregory Nazianzus. He is recognized by the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church as a saint and as a Doctor of the Church. The Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria also recognizes John Chrysostom as a saint. John Chrysostom's main works are a massive collection of biblical commentaries (scriptural homilies). His treatise on the priesthood and on divine nature are also well known. . His Adversus Judeus is notorious for articulating the characterization of Jews as "christ-killers" and denouncing "Judaizers", Christians who congregate in synagogues and observe Jewish rituals (like circumcision) and holidays in order to imitate the ear … [Click Below for Full Description]
