1718. [Grand St.Bernard] [c.1718]. Restoring Discipline in the Augustinian Community of Grand Saint Bernard [Manuscript]. Boniface, Louis. [Hospice de Grand Saint Bernard]. Opuscula Nonnulla R. Ludovici Bonifacii Canonici Regularis Coadiutoris ad Salutiferam Regularis Disciplinae Restitutionem. Sparsim Adiunctis Postea Latis a Sacra Episcoporum & Regularium Congegatione Decretis 1718. [Grand-St.-Bernard, c.1718]. 304 ff. Quarto (9-1/2" x 7"). Contemporary morocco with decorate blind stamping, stitched down center of spine, which has an early hand-lettered title panel, fragments of thong ties, untrimmed edges. Light rubbing to boards, somewhat heavier rubbing to extremities, early repair to foot of spine. Light toning to interior, text in neat hand, a few laid-in notes. A handsome item. $5,000. * This is a collection of canon law writings by Louis Boniface, intended (so the title-page states) to restore discipline at the famous Augustinian community of Grand Saint Bernard in the Swiss Alps, where the author was coadjutor and provost. We understand it to be an official report, later distributed as manuscript copies, which was presented at a synodical meeting of 1718. Much of the study concerns money and property. Other subjects include the officers of the community and a ban on women servants. Showing its high status as a report, other copies are found in the Grand-Saint-Bernard archives. Our copy has a remarkable binding featuring blind-stamped floral designs with red-painted inlay. It was probably made from a wall hanging or wallpaper. The archive of Grand Saint-Bernard has … [Click Below for Full Description]

Seitz, Johann Christian
Ohne Ort, 1718. VD18 1160946X. Erste Ausgabe 1 Bl., 198 S. - Zeitgenössischer Kalblederband mit Rücken- und Kantenvergoldung. (Etwas berieben und bestossen.). - Seltene theologische Streitschrift. 1708. S. 554—561.)“ Vgl. ADB 33 ( … [Click Below for Full Description]

A Treatise of Endemic Diseases wherein the Different Nature of Airs, Situations, Soils, Waters, Diet, &c. are Mechanically Explain'd and Accounted for. Firts Edition. WINTRINGHAM, Clifton Published by York: Printed by Grace White for Francis Hildyard, and are to be Sold by W. Taylor, & Tho. Ward, 1718., 1718 Very Good. First Edition. Wintringham was a physician in York for over thirty-five years. "His published works . . . are full of good sense and practical information" (Munk II: 35). The Works of the Late Clifton Wintringham, Physician, at York, edited by his son Sir Clifton Wintringham M.D. F.R.S, were published in 1752, four years after Wintringham's death. "His most significant and innovative publication was Commentarius nosologicus, morbos epidemicos . . . in urbe Eboracensi. Originally published in York in 1727, it was based on data he had collected for nearly twenty years on death rates and epidemics in the city. . . . At this early period, such epidemiological surveys were extremely rare and Wintringham was undoubtedly a pioneer in this branch of medical writing. Statistics collected from the York parish registers show the severity of the epidemics--typhus in 1718-19, measles in 1721 and 1730, miliary fever in 1727--on all of which Wintringham commented.

This guide to botany consists of an enumeration of all genera in tabular form, followed by extensive synonomy. The books brings little new but is interesting because it is one of the first few German works in which the Linnaean generic reform, taxonomic as well as nomenclatural, if fully accepted" (Stafleu). The present work includes a chapter explaining the classification systems of Tournefort, Rivinus and Linnaeus. Francis Hutchinson
London: R. Knaplock and D. Midwinter, 1718. FIRST EDITION. Octavo, 270 pp., [1] leaf (ads) attractive contemporary paneled calf. No spine label. Half-title is present and the text is very fresh for its age with white pages. The rear hinge is a little weak and shaken, but an excellent contemporary copy usually found rebound or in later bindings. Housed and chemised in a quarter morocco slipcase with marbled boards and a green morocco label by the Heritage Bindery which will insure protection. British clergyman Francis Hutchinson was "the man who gave the coup de grace to the witch delusion in England" (Robbins), leveling "a final and deadly blow at the dying superstition" (Notestein). "Of most interest to him were the witchcraft accusations at Boston and Salem, and [the case] of Jane Wenham (1712), which provoked intense passions and vicious politicking Hutchinson's account of witchcraft is thoroughly modern a history book 'of the moment' and his carefully modest appeal for reform of the laws on witchcraft was indeed heeded, although not for a further decade and a half" (Gibson, Witchcraft and Society, 240-41). Hutchinson's landmark work on Witchcraft is "full of valuable historical details, with many particulars collected by personal inquiry from survivors" (DNB), and features "a chronological table [including] those who were burnt as witches in New England" (Allibone, 927). Including chapters on "The Suffolk Witches" and "The Witchcrafts at Boston & in New England." Very uncommon in a contemporary state. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

The British history, Jeffrey Of Monthmouth, 1st, 1718 Rare, Leather Bound in very good original condition, although missing title lable onnthe spine. Octavo (190 x 117 mm). First edition in English, William Cole's copy, of "one of the most popular and influential historical works of the middle ages" (ODNB), by Geoffrey of Monmouth (c.1100-1154/5), bishop of St Asaph. Completed by 1139, Geoffrey's Historia Regum Britanniae introduced such figures as Arthur, Merlin, and King Leir to an international reading public. "The fact that thereafter the Arthurian cycle was mediated primarily through the mid-fifteenth-century Morte d'Arthur of Sir Thomas Malory should not detract from the position of Geoffrey of Monmouth as its great originator" (op. cit.) The figure of King Leir [Lear] seems to have been Geoffrey's original creation, and arguably the most successful. "Indeed, Tatlock described the Leir story 'along with the vogue of Arthur' as 'Geoffrey's greatest contribution to the world'" (op. cit.)
