[Attributes: Hard Cover]

Francis Hutchinson
London: R. Knaplock and D. Midwinter, 1718. FIRST EDITION. Octavo, 270 pp., [1] leaf (ads) attractive contemporary paneled calf. No spine label. Half-title is present and the text is very fresh for its age with white pages. The rear hinge is a little weak and shaken, but an excellent contemporary copy usually found rebound or in later bindings. Housed and chemised in a quarter morocco slipcase with marbled boards and a green morocco label by the Heritage Bindery which will insure protection. British clergyman Francis Hutchinson was "the man who gave the coup de grace to the witch delusion in England" (Robbins), leveling "a final and deadly blow at the dying superstition" (Notestein). "Of most interest to him were the witchcraft accusations at Boston and Salem, and [the case] of Jane Wenham (1712), which provoked intense passions and vicious politicking Hutchinson's account of witchcraft is thoroughly modern—a history book 'of the moment' and his carefully modest appeal for reform of the laws on witchcraft was indeed heeded, although not for a further decade and a half" (Gibson, Witchcraft and Society, 240-41). Hutchinson's landmark work on Witchcraft is "full of valuable historical details, with many particulars collected by personal inquiry from survivors" (DNB), and features "a chronological table [including] those who were burnt as witches in New England" (Allibone, 927). Including chapters on "The Suffolk Witches" and "The Witchcrafts at Boston & in New England." Very uncommon in a contemporary state. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

The British history, Jeffrey Of Monthmouth, 1st, 1718 Rare, Leather Bound in very good original condition, although missing title lable onnthe spine. Octavo (190 x 117 mm). First edition in English, William Cole's copy, of "one of the most popular and influential historical works of the middle ages" (ODNB), by Geoffrey of Monmouth (c.1100-1154/5), bishop of St Asaph. Completed by 1139, Geoffrey's Historia Regum Britanniae introduced such figures as Arthur, Merlin, and King Leir to an international reading public. "The fact that thereafter the Arthurian cycle was mediated primarily through the mid-fifteenth-century Morte d'Arthur of Sir Thomas Malory should not detract from the position of Geoffrey of Monmouth as its great originator" (op. cit.) The figure of King Leir [Lear] seems to have been Geoffrey's original creation, and arguably the most successful. "Indeed, Tatlock described the Leir story 'along with the vogue of Arthur' as 'Geoffrey's greatest contribution to the world'" (op. cit.) The Historia makes Britain's foundation contiguous with classical myth, in the person of Brutus, a Trojan émigré. It proceeds to an account of a series of royal dynasties, some of whose members enjoyed later fame, to the last glorious British kings, notably Uther Pendragon and Arthur, before the final victory of the Saxons. Geoffrey concludes his history in the seventh century AD, where Bede's Historia ecclesiastica begins. This is the copy of Cambridge antiquary William Cole (1714-82), bearing his early ownership inscription to the first blank "G.l.mus Cole Aul. de Clare Cant Soc-Com" … [Click Below for Full Description]

Daphnis and Chloé is the only known work of the 2nd century AD Greek novelist and romancer Longus. Archibald Pitcairn [Pitcairne]
Andrew Bell & John Osborn, 1718. Octavo. Full Leather. First Edition. Pitcairn was perhaps the best known physician in Scotland in his day, and is credited with laying the foundation of the great Edinburgh school of medicine. His Physick was a "remarkable work" and "a systematic treatise on medicine, beginning ... with a statement of physiological principles. This is interesting if only as evidence of the overwhelming importance attached by his school to the discovery of Harvey" [Bibl. Osleriana 3684]. ~~This copy belonged to one Gabriel Jeffreys, a physician in Brecon, Wales, with his name label and signature dated 1738. We know (from welshjournals.llgc.org.uk) was that Jeffreys was "well used to the unprofitable life of an eighteenth-century country surgeon" for "[i]n the year in which he built his house, he did not make £10 from his professional work." ~~"Translated from the correctest impression of the Latin ..." The Society's mission was to teach the young and to convert the protestants, and it quickly became the vanguard of the Counterreformation as well as the leading educational force in Catholic Europe. Ca. 1625 there were 372 Jesuit colleges, where 13000 students were taught, more than almost all such institutions in the rest of Europe. In 1739 they were running 669 schools. All those students were to be trained in theology, philosophy, mathematics, rhetoric and in speaking, reading and writing Latin. Greek was taught in the lowest classes; one should be able to read the Bible in Greek. In the 17th century there were in the Belgian part of the Low Countries 34 Jesuit schools. This rapid growth in the number of schools and students created a heavy demand for both elementary texts and handbooks for teachers and students. D. Browne [et al, 1718. Folio, pp. [ii]-xv + [xvi] errata + [1]-739 +blank + [22] index + [23] ads; full period calf stamped in black; contemporary morocco spine label gilt; boards starting to detach (with leather loss) but still held by cords; tips worn; several small dings and gouges; later hand-lettered library code to heel of spine; library ink stamp to top edge; bookplates to pastedown; ink stamp, embossed stamp, and library numerals to title leaf; embossed stamp to pp. 17-18; leaves generally clean; library pocket and electronic tag to rear pastedown; a reasonably attractive ex-library copy. Properly de-accessioned. Fair. Boards. Later edition printed in the year of the author's death. The first dialogue appears to have been printed under this title as early as 1691. The Dialogues have to do with the legitimacy of the claim for the divine right of Kings and the nature of English Constitutional government. Tyrrell also explores the question of under what circumstances, if any, a monarch may forfeit his title to the crown. The reigns considered include those of King William, the Norman, King James II, King William and Queen Mary, King Charles I, and others. Tyrrell (1643-1718) was a Whig historian and a friend of John Locke.

ANDRY DE BOISREGARD (Nicolas) ].
"Andry's views were often ahead of his time. Unlike most of his contemporaries, he did not believe in the spontaneous generation of parasites but clearly stated that their seeds entered the body from outside sources and that some foods were particularly liable to contain them" (Garrison-Morton). Cf. Garrison-Morton, 2448.2 (pour son traité de la génération des vers). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
