Bretonnier, Barthelemy-Joseph
1718 - A Curious Hybrid of Encyclopedia, Treatise and Reform Tract [Bretonnier, Barthelemy-Joseph (1656-1727)]. Paris: Chez Emery, 1718. lxxii, 463, [18] pp. Octavo (6-1/2" x 3-3/4"). Contemporary sheep, gilt spine with raised bands and lettering piece, edges rouged. Moderate rubbing to extremities with wear to spine ends and corners, joints starting at ends. Woodcut head and tail-pieces. Some toning to text. Early annotations to verso of front free endpaper, two early struck-through signatures to title page, interior otherwise clean. * First edition. Organized alphabetically, this guide to French law and judicial administration is an encyclopedia, a treatise and a reform tract. As the title indicates, it outlines different jurisdictions in order to advance an argument for a comprehensive uniform court system. The "questions" relate, for the most part, to tricky aspects of family law. Some of the topics its covers are the marriage of wives of absent husbands, dowries, bastards, the passing on of jewelry, the marriage of minors, second marriages, subrogation, wills, and wards. Bretonnier was an avocat of the Paris Parlement. First published in 1718, his treatise went through five editions, the final appearing in 1783. All are scarce in North America. OCLC locates 3 copies of the first edition in North America, 2 in law libraries ( … [Click Below for Full Description]

BIJBEL
Leyden, Johannes Muller, the widow of Cornelis Boutesteyn, and Samuel Luchtmans, 1718. (gegraveerde titelpagina, 21) 302, (2) 134, (14) 164, (2) 66 folia. Contemporary blind- … [Click Below for Full Description]

Buddeus, Johann Franz, Philosoph und Theologe (1667-1729).
Jena, 30. IX. 1718.. 1 S. Qu.-schmal-kl. 8vo.. "Aeterna sequamur memoriae caussa [!]".

A L¿Imprimerie Royale, Paris 1718 - quarto, 8 pages, trimmed at top and bottom edge, old armorial hand-stamp and manuscript notation on first page, small stain in blank margin, manuscript attestation or registration at La Rochelle 3 December, 1718, signed ¿Regnaud.¿ Grants exclusive rights for the Canadian beaver trade to John Law¿s Compagnie de l¿Occident, better known as the Mississippi Company. This was a key element in the finances of Law¿s company. In May 1716, the Banque Générale Privée, which developed the use of paper money, was set by convicted murderer and millionaire gambler John Law. It was a private bank, but three quarters of the capital consisted of government bills and government accepted notes. In August 1717, he bought the Mississippi Company to help the French colony in Louisiana. In the same year Law conceived a joint-stock trading company called the Compagnie d¿Occident, or literally ¿Company of the West.¿ Law was named Chief Director of this new company, which was granted a trade monopoly in August 1717, of the West Indies and North America by the French government. In Canada the company would trade in beaver skins. In Louisiana they would trade in precious metals. (see item number 33 below for the company¿s charter). Variant of Wroth and Annan, 642, the present example with different imprint. See Maggs, The French Colonisation of America, 111, for their offering of that variant issue (£10 10s). Not in Sabin, not in Lande, not in Staton & Tremaine, not in European Americana, not found in OCLC.

THOMASIUS, Christian,
Halle und Leipzig (Halae & Lipsiae), typis & sumtibus viduae Christophori Salfeldii, 1718.. Editio quarta praecedentibus auctior et correctior in usum Auditorii Thomasiani. Gr.-8vo. Tb. in Rot-Schwarz-Druck, 284 S., 1 Bl. Zeitgenössischer Pergamentband mit geprägtem Rücken nach Art eines Rückenschildes. (stellenw. etw. stockfleckig)..

Prior Matthew
London: Printed for Jacob Tonson, 1718. The FIRST AND BEST OF THE RARE Tonson subscription folio editions, ONE OF A VERY SMALL NUMBER OF COPIES ONLY, of this sumptuous "Superfine" issue, with the watermark of a fleur-de-lys surmounting a shield, organized and published by Prior's friends. The Strasburg bend watermark was used generally for the subscribers and normal copies were issued with the London arms watermark. Illustrated with superb engraved frontispiece, and large and finely engraved head, tail and initial pieces throughout. Folio, original full period speckled calf, red calf label gilt within raised bands of the spine separating the compartments which are elaborately decorated with finely tooled gilt panel work surrounding central gilt tooled floral pieces, all edges speckled. [42], 506 + [6] Contents at end. A very fine and very crisp copy of this exquisitely printed work. Entirely unsophisticated with some very minor expected age. VERY RARE in this state. An exquisitely printed work. The quality of the engraving work is absolutely superb and the setting of the type and choice of paper of the very highest quality. Having this book in one's hands makes one reflect upon how wonderful a folio edition of Shakespeare might have been had Tonson ever undertaken the task. Matthew Prior was one of the most important English poets of the century, and a diplomat as well. To raise money after his release from house arrest during the shift of power in England, Tonson and Alexander Pope especially aided Prior in setting to type a subscriber's edition of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Skelton (John)
Printed for Isaac Dalton and Sold by W. Boreham. outer pages a bit soiled, first gathering foxed, lesser spotting elsewhere, small circular stamp of the Selbourne Library on verso of title, bound with 8 other works: see below), pp. [viii], 31, 8vo, eighteenth-century speckled calf, single gilt fillet on sides, sometime rebacked (not very elegantly) in brown wavy-grained cloth, corners worn, sound. Prior to Dyce's edition (Skelton's Poetical Works, 1843), the poet's writings in print are rather scarce. There were a number of 16th-century editions, both of individual poems and Works, but these are nowadays very rare on the market. The present poem was first printed by Wynkyn de Worde, probably in 1521. There is a dearth of Skelton in the 17th century, and the 18th not much better. This edition is represented in ESTC by only four copies, Oxford (bis), Huntington, and Yale. Bound with: Tolson (Francis) Octavius Prince of Syra, or, a Lash for Levi, half-title, T. Warner, 1719; [Holdsworth (Edward)] The Mouse-Trap, a Poem, Done from the Original Latin in Milton's Stile, half-title, engraved frontispiece (shaved), R.
