First edition in English, translated by John Ozell, a year after the original text in French was published at Paris. Tournefort (1656-1708) was royal botanist to Louis XIV. The book arose from the suggestion made in 1699 to Louis XIV by the Count de Pontchartrain, Secretary of State and in charge of the French Academy, that he send suitable persons abroad to observe not only natural history, but also geography, commerce, religion and manners of other peoples. Between 1700 and 1702 Tournefort travelled through the islands of Greece and visited Constantinople, the borders of the Black Sea, Armenia and Georgia, collecting plants and undertaking other types of observations, reporting his findings in letters to Count de Pontchartrain. He was accompanied by the German botanist Andreas Gundesheimer (1668-1715) and the artist Claude Aubriet (1651-1743). The book was published posthumously after Tournefort was run over and killed by a carriage in Paris. It includes a famous early description of a va … [Click Below for Full Description]

DE L'ISLE, Guillaume (1675-1726)
Paris, 1718. Copper-engraved map, period hand-colouring in outline. "One of the most outstanding maps of Canada of the 17th and early 18th centuries" (Kershaw). "Del'Isle's map of Canada is one of the most outstanding maps of Canada of the 17th and early 18th centuries. Typical of all his work, the information that went into his map of Canada was the result of careful and painstaking research" (Kershaw, I, p. 278). The numerous trading posts and missions of New France and the major towns of the adjacent British colonies are labeled. The area around Hudson's Bay is shown to be inhabited by native tribes referred to as the Christinaux or Kilistinons, referring to their conversion to the Christian faith, while Labrador is home to the Eskimaux. Interestingly, the map features a number of notes specifically referring to the names of explorers and the dates in which they discovered certain places, such as the reference to Nouveau Danemarc, discovered by the Danish explorer Jan Munk in 1619. The depiction of the upper Mississippi and Ohio basins is also quite detailed, noting the position of the French fort of St. Louis or Crevecouer near the present-day site of Peoria, Illinois. Perhaps the most fascinating aspect of the map is its portrayal of the Rivière Longue, one of the most sensational and enduring cartographic misconceptions ever devised. This imaginary river was reported to flow from the Pays des Gnacsitares in the far west, promising the best route through the interior of the continent. A short distance over some mountains lies a long salt water lake, that is supposedly … [Click Below for Full Description]

Matthäus SEUTTER (1678-1757) Augsburg ca 1750. Copper engraving with original colour, image size: 49 x 57 cm.
- Detailed originally coloured map with titles and names in Latin and Cyrillic shows the Ladoga Canal on the coast of Lake Ladoga between Shlisselburg at the head of the Neva River and the mouth of Volkhov River. The Ladoga Canal was one of the projects of Peter the Great and one of the first major canals constructed in Russia. The construction of the canal was ordered in 1718. The canal was necessary as economic development in Russia required a significant expansion of waterways and the windy and stormy Lake Ladoga offered difficult and dangerous sea routes. The construction began in 1719, but was briefly stopped in 1723, when General Skornyakov-Pisarev, who was in charge of the project, was arrested for his incompetence and carelessness. The work was taken over by Burkhard Christoph von Münnich, who completed the canal in 1730. To a great disappointment of the Czar the canal was less than a meter deep and could not be used. It was only enlarged and expanded by the Catherine the Great from 1765 on. The map shows the ideal construction of the Ladoga Canal with a plan on the upper left part. The German Author Matthäus Seuter based his map upon a Russian map, made by Joseph Nicolas de L'Isle in 1735, published in (Atlas Russicus) Russischer Atlas: Welcher in einer General-Charte und neunzehen Special-Charten das gesamte Russische Reich und dessen angraentzende Laender, nach den Regeln der Erd-Beschreibung und den ne Academie der Wissenschafften (St. Petersburg 1745). This Russian Atlas, published by , was based on work by Iwan Kirillowitsch Kirilow (1689-1737). Kirilow publis … [Click Below for Full Description]

Broadside.
1718. Printed sheet, 7 x 12 inches. Thirty-nine lines follow the headlines and give a detailed account of this battle, in which Byng defeated the Spanish in a runup to the all but forgotten War of the Quadruple Alliance. (As a result of this war, Spain briefly held Pensacola, Florida.) Byng's performance in this victory did him little good when, thirty-nine years later, he was executed for supposedly failing to protect Minorca during the Seven Years War. In fact, he simply took the fall for the Admiralty at large, which was then in disarray. This rare broadside is accompanied by an article from the London Gazette of the next day, recapitulating the account of the battle as it appeared in the broadside. The broadside itself bears the manuscript notation "1 Sept. 1718." Rare. According to Worldcat, only the British Library hold a copy. Evenly tanned; in excellent condition.

Rogers, Woodes.
London, 1718. b/w folding maps. xix, 428, 57, (7) pp. “This work may be considered a buccaneering classic. With William Dampier as pilot, Captain Woodes Rogers’ privateering expedition set sail from Bristol. After sailing down the coast of Brazil and rounding Cape Horn, she made for the deserted island of Juan Fernandez... There Rogers rescued the celebrated Alexander Selkirk... The expedition then cruised the coast of Peru, taking various prizes, reached California, and crossed the Pacific to Asia.”—Hill 1479. It is generally supposed that Daniel Defoe based his “Robinson Crusoe” on this work, since it is the first to describe Selkirk. A large part of the book also relates to California and Mexico. This is the second “Corrected” edition of a book first published in 1712. It contains 5 folding maps by Moll and Senex, and an expanded appendix. Ink lines at bottom of title page and dedication, not obscuring any text. A very nice copy, bound in contemporary full calf “Cambridge style” binding, rebacked to match with gilt spine decorations, raised bands, and red spine label. Backstrip lightly scuffed.

London, 1718. b/w folding maps. xix, 428, 57, (7) pp. ?"This work may be considered a buccaneering classic. With William Dampier as pilot, Captain Woodes Rogers?' privateering expedition set sail from Bristol. After sailing down the coast of Brazil and rounding Cape Horn, she made for the deserted island of Juan Fernandez... There Rogers rescued the celebrated Alexander Selkirk... The expedition then cruised the coast of Peru, taking various prizes, reached California, and crossed the Pacific to Asia.?"—Hill 1479. FENELON François de Salignac de La Mothe & CERCEAU DU P.
- Chez J. Frédéric Bernard, à Amsterdam 1718, In-12 (9x15,5cm), (10) 374pp. (7), relié. - Edition originale. [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] First Edition Bound in red full morocco old ca 1860 unsigned. Back to Jansenist nerves decorated with cold boxes. (Bijbel) BIBLE
Leyden, Johannes Muller, the widow of Cornelis Boutesteyn, and Samuel Luchtmans 1718. (gegraveerde titelpagina, 21) 302, (2) 134, (14) 164, (2) 66 folia. Paris: Chez Emery, 1718. lxxii, 463, [18] pp. Octavo (6-1/2" x 3-3/4"). Woodcut head and tail-pieces. Some toning to text. Early annotations to verso of front free endpaper, two early struck-through signatures to title page, interior otherwise clean. * First edition. Organized alphabetically, this guide to French law and judicial administration is an encyclopedia, a treatise and a reform tract. As the title indicates, it outlines different jurisdictions in order to advance an argument for a comprehensive uniform court system. The "questions" relate, for the most part, to tricky aspects of family law. Some of the topics its covers are the marriage of wives of absent husbands, dowries, bastards, the passing on of jewelry, the marriage of minors, second marriages, subrogation, wills, and wards. Bretonnier was an avocat of the Paris Parlement. First published in 1718, his treatise went through five editions, the final appearing in 1783. All are scarce in North America.
