THOMASIUS, Christian,
Halle und Leipzig (Halae & Lipsiae), typis & sumtibus viduae Christophori Salfeldii, 1718.. Editio quarta praecedentibus auctior et correctior in usum Auditorii Thomasiani. Gr.-8vo. Tb. in Rot-Schwarz-Druck, 284 S., 1 Bl. Zeitgenössischer Pergamentband mit geprägtem Rücken nach Art eines Rückenschildes. (stellenw. etw. stockfleckig)..

Prior Matthew
London: Printed for Jacob Tonson, 1718. The FIRST AND BEST OF THE RARE Tonson subscription folio editions, ONE OF A VERY SMALL NUMBER OF COPIES ONLY, of this sumptuous "Superfine" issue, with the watermark of a fleur-de-lys surmounting a shield, organized and published by Prior's friends. The Strasburg bend watermark was used generally for the subscribers and normal copies were issued with the London arms watermark. Illustrated with superb engraved frontispiece, and large and finely engraved head, tail and initial pieces throughout. Folio, original full period speckled calf, red calf label gilt within raised bands of the spine separating the compartments which are elaborately decorated with finely tooled gilt panel work surrounding central gilt tooled floral pieces, all edges speckled. [42], 506 + [6] Contents at end. A very fine and very crisp copy of this exquisitely printed work. Entirely unsophisticated with some very minor expected age. VERY RARE in this state. An exquisitely printed work. The quality of the engraving work is absolutely superb and the setting of the type and choice of paper of the very highest quality. Having this book in one's hands makes one reflect upon how wonderful a folio edition of Shakespeare might have been had Tonson ever undertaken the task. Matthew Prior was one of the most important English poets of the century, and a diplomat as well. To raise money after his release from house arrest during the shift of power in England, Tonson and Alexander Pope especially aided Prior in setting to type a subscriber's edition of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Skelton (John)
Printed for Isaac Dalton and Sold by W. Boreham. outer pages a bit soiled, first gathering foxed, lesser spotting elsewhere, small circular stamp of the Selbourne Library on verso of title, bound with 8 other works: see below), pp. [viii], 31, 8vo, eighteenth-century speckled calf, single gilt fillet on sides, sometime rebacked (not very elegantly) in brown wavy-grained cloth, corners worn, sound. Prior to Dyce's edition (Skelton's Poetical Works, 1843), the poet's writings in print are rather scarce. There were a number of 16th-century editions, both of individual poems and Works, but these are nowadays very rare on the market. The present poem was first printed by Wynkyn de Worde, probably in 1521. There is a dearth of Skelton in the 17th century, and the 18th not much better. This edition is represented in ESTC by only four copies, Oxford (bis), Huntington, and Yale. Bound with: Tolson (Francis) Octavius Prince of Syra, or, a Lash for Levi, half-title, T. Warner, 1719; [Holdsworth (Edward)] The Mouse-Trap, a Poem, Done from the Original Latin in Milton's Stile, half-title, engraved frontispiece (shaved), R. Seitz, Johann Christian:
- O. O. u. Dr. 1718.. 8vo. (1) Bl., 198 S. Zeitgenössischer Kalblederband mit Rücken- und Kantenvergoldung. Exlibris der Familie Huber / St. Gallen auf dem Innendeckel Cf. Wegmann, Schweizer Exlibris 3676ff.).

BIJBEL
Leyden, Johannes Muller, the widow of Cornelis Boutesteyn, and Samuel Luchtmans 1718. (gegraveerde titelpagina, 21) 302, (2) 134, (14) 164, (2) 66 folia. ROGERS, Captain Woodes
London: Andrew Bell, 1718. Octavo, with five folding maps including frontispiece; very good in contemporary panelled calf, joints neatly repaired and label renewed; extensive inscriptions to front endpapers and verso of title-page. Dampier, Selkirk and anti-submarine officers of the Great War. Fine second edition, corrected, of this "buccaneering classic" (Hill): the voyage was one of the most important of its kind, and is also significant for being an important insight into the later career of William Dampier, who was the pilot. The book recounts a cruising voyage from 1708-1711, raiding Spanish possessions on the Pacific coast of South America, including a famous attack on the Manila galleon. The book is perhaps best known for the detailed recounting of their rescue of Alexander Selkirk, whose life is described in detail, and which is thought to have been the inspiration for Defoe's {i Robinson Crusoe}. This attractive copy has an intriguing Royal Navy association as several pages, including the verso of the frontispiece map and the title-page, are covered with signatures of serving British naval officers in 1914 and 1915, including one name, that of the "Naval Secretary to the Admiral in Charge", which has been deleted by the censor. Evidently Rogers' book was carried on board several ships on active service against German submarines in the North Sea, and the signatures include those of Rear Admiral Richard Purefoy (flying his flag in the {i Assistance}), Vice Admiral Charles H. Dare, and Rear Admiral Reginald Tupper (who later joined the British fascists). The i … [Click Below for Full Description]

DE L'ISLE, G.
Paris, 1718. No Binding. Very Good. 19 ¼ x 25 ¾ inches. Original outline color; fine condition. The rare first state (without New Orleans) of the first edition in a superb example. "This map is the mother and main source of all the later maps" (Kohl) of the interior United States and the Mississippi River. It was, in fact, "the first large-scale map accurately showing the lower Mississippi River and surrounding areas." (Schwartz) This was also the earliest printed map with the original place name that would become 'Texas.' "The most important notation to Texas history [on the map]... was that appearing along the Trinity: 'Mission de los Tiejas, etablie in 1716.' . . . This phrase marked the first appearance of a form of the name Texas on a printed map, and thus Delisle has received proper credit for establishing Texas as a geographic place name." (Martin & Martin) De l'Isle's map also was the first work to accurately trace the routes of many great explorers, including De Soto (whose route appears here for the first time on a map), La Salle, Ponce de Leon, St. Denis, Tonti, and others. Also, throughout the South and Southwest, the ranges and villages of numerous Indian tribes are shown. The inset map in the lower right details the Mississippi delta and Mobile Bay. In addition to numerous other issues of the map published by De l'Isle and his successors, La Louisiane was the basis of maps by Homann, Moll, Senex, Seutter and others.Kohl,Lowery Collection, p. 230; Schwartz/ Ehrenberg, pp. 140-41, (illus.) 146; Martin & Martin, Maps of Texas, pl. 19, pp. 98-9; C … [Click Below for Full Description]

Rogers, Woodes
London, 1718. b/w folding maps. xix, 428, 57, (7) pp. “This work may be considered a buccaneering classic. With William Dampier as pilot, Captain Woodes Rogers’ privateering expedition set sail from Bristol. After sailing down the coast of Brazil and rounding Cape Horn, she made for the deserted island of Juan Fernandez... There Rogers rescued the celebrated Alexander Selkirk... The expedition then cruised the coast of Peru, taking various prizes, reached California, and crossed the Pacific to Asia.”—Hill 1479. It is generally supposed that Daniel Defoe based his “Robinson Crusoe” on this work, since it is the first to describe Selkirk. A large part of the book also relates to California and Mexico. This is the second “Corrected” edition of a book first published in 1712. It contains 5 folding maps by Moll and Senex, and an expanded appendix. Ink lines at bottom of title page and dedication, not obscuring any text. A very nice copy, bound in contemporary full calf “Cambridge style” binding, rebacked to match with gilt spine decorations, raised bands, and red spine label. Backstrip lightly scuffed.
