Cini, Scienziati aretini dal ?400 al ?700, n. 31). Leeuwenhoek was the greatest of the early microbiologists, and was responsible for many important discoveries. The letters were mostly written in Dutch and then translated into Latin. ¶ ?Leeuwenhoek?s observations were so striking, owing to the minuteness of the structures that he dealt with and the accuracy of his observation, that there was very great curiosity as to the kind of instrument that he must be using to obtain such wonderful results, and in 1681 there was a discussion about them. ? [He never revealed the secret of his instruments]. At the death of Leeuwenhoek, a cabinet containing 26 of his microscopes was left to the Royal Society? Wien, Simon Schmid, 1718. - 8°. Gestochenes Frontispiz, 4 Bll., 105 SS., 17 Kupfertafeln Pappband d. HALLEY, Edmund]
W. & J. Innys, 1718. Complete issue No. 354 of Philosophical Transactions. 4to, pp. 691-734 with one folding plate (three stamps on first page, one private and two institutional, otherwise very good, no marks on the Halley article). Disbound. FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST DISCOVERY OF A COMET BY MEANS OF A TELESCOPE (the paper is anonymous, but is by Halley as editor of the Philosophical Transactions). At the time of Halley’s observations, it was unknown whether comets were in abundance in the solar system, or were quite rare. Although no comet had been seen from England for 35 years, Halley theorized that, on account of several recent observations of comets in France, there were perhaps many more than had been earlier supposed. "Hence," he wrote, "we may justly conclude that the Returns of Comets are much more frequent than is vulgarly reckoned." As evidence for this conjecture, he described in this paper the results of observations made with his 24-foot telescope (which he had used in St. Helena 40 years earlier to catalogue the southern stars). “On Monday, June 10, in the Evening, the Sky being very serene and calm, I was desirous to take a view of the disk of Mars (then very near the Earth, and appearing very glorious) to see if I could distinguish in my 24 Foot Telescope, the Spots said to be seen on him. Directing my Tube for the purpose, I accidentally fell upon a small whitish Appearance near the Planet, resembling in all respects such a Nebula . The Reverend Mr. Miles Williams, Mr. Alban Thomas, and myself contemplated this Appearance for above an Hour . and we could … [Click Below for Full Description]

MERIAN, MARIA SIBYLLA.
Amsterdam, J. Oosterwyk, (1718). 3 parts bound in one. 4to (197 x 155mm). With hand-coloured engraved allegorical frontispiece by J. Schijnvoet, hand-coloured engraved portrait of Maria Sibilla Merian, 3 other hand-coloured frontispieces of floral wreaths to each part, one hand-coloured engraved vignette and 150 beautifully hand-coloured engraved plates. Contemporary Dutch calf, richly gilt ornamented spine with gilt lettering in 6 compartments (head of spine shaved). An extraordinarily fine coloured copy of the first Latin edition of Maria Sibylla Merian's 'Der Rupsen Begin', published one year after the third volume of the Dutch language edition. The work was first published in German 'Der Raupen wunderbare Verwandlung'. Of this German edition only 2 parts were published./ /The frontispiece, the portrait of Merian and the 3 frontispieces of floral wreaths have the margins enlarged at the time of printing and binding. The edges of these leaves have the same faint red colour as the other leaves. Copies of this edition have come on the market without the allegorical frontispiece by Schijnvoet, and the 3 frontispieces of floral wreath and most copies do not have the portrait of Merian (see for example Christie's sale 4 June 2008). In our opinion the present copy is an early issue of the work, with the allegorical frontispiece, portrait of Merian and the 3 frontispieces of floral wreath printed on smaller paper, which were made to size when the book was bound. The binding is strictly contemporary. As the colouring of the present copy is exceptionally fine it is not unlikely it … [Click Below for Full Description]

Very Good. quarto, 8 pages, trimmed at top and bottom edge, old armorial hand-stamp and manuscript notation on first page, small stain in blank margin, manuscript attestation or registration at La Rochelle 3 December, 1718, signed "Regnaud." Grants exclusive rights for the Canadian beaver trade to John Law's Compagnie de l'Occident, better known as the Mississippi Company. This was a key element in the finances of Law's company. In May 1716, the Banque Générale Privée, which developed the use of paper money, was set by convicted murderer and millionaire gambler John Law. It was a private bank, but three quarters of the capital consisted of government bills and government accepted notes. In August 1717, he bought the Mississippi Company to help the French colony in Louisiana. In the same year Law conceived a joint-stock trading company called the Compagnie d'Occident, or literally "Company of the West." Law was named Chief Director of this new company, which was granted a trade monopoly in August 1717, of the West Indies and North America by the French government. In Canada the company would trade in beaver skins. In Louisiana they would trade in precious metals. (see item number 33 below for the company's charter). Variant of Wroth and Annan, 642, the present example with different imprint. See Maggs, The French Colonisation of America, 111, for their offering of that variant issue (£10 10s). (Pollock vs. the Thane of Cawdor).
[Edinburgh] Folio (31.2 cm, 12.25"). [1] p.. 1718 Dated July 30 1718, this broadside is a rebuttal of certain financial assertions made by Ruth Pollock in her ongoing legal battle against John Campbell over the estate of Sir Hugh Campbell, which included Cawdor Castle (although that legendary castle is not mentioned in this document). This is an uncommon legal item, with => no holdings described by WorldCat or ESTC. Creased and dust-soiled, with a small hole in lower margin not touching text and a few pinholes within text.
