Matthäus SEUTTER (1678-1757) Augsburg ca 1750. Copper engraving with original colour, image size: 49 x 57 cm.
- Detailed originally coloured map with titles and names in Latin and Cyrillic shows the Ladoga Canal on the coast of Lake Ladoga between Shlisselburg at the head of the Neva River and the mouth of Volkhov River. The Ladoga Canal was one of the projects of Peter the Great and one of the first major canals constructed in Russia. The construction of the canal was ordered in 1718. The canal was necessary as economic development in Russia required a significant expansion of waterways and the windy and stormy Lake Ladoga offered difficult and dangerous sea routes. The construction began in 1719, but was briefly stopped in 1723, when General Skornyakov-Pisarev, who was in charge of the project, was arrested for his incompetence and carelessness. The work was taken over by Burkhard Christoph von Münnich, who completed the canal in 1730. To a great disappointment of the Czar the canal was less than a meter deep and could not be used. It was only enlarged and expanded by the Catherine the Great from 1765 on. The map shows the ideal construction of the Ladoga Canal with a plan on the upper left part. The German Author Matthäus Seuter based his map upon a Russian map, made by Joseph Nicolas de L'Isle in 1735, published in (Atlas Russicus) Russischer Atlas: Welcher in einer General-Charte und neunzehen Special-Charten das gesamte Russische Reich und dessen angraentzende Laender, nach den Regeln der Erd-Beschreibung und den ne Academie der Wissenschafften (St. Petersburg 1745). This Russian Atlas, published by , was based on work by Iwan Kirillowitsch Kirilow (1689-1737). Kirilow publis … [Click Below for Full Description]

Broadside.
1718. Printed sheet, 7 x 12 inches. Thirty-nine lines follow the headlines and give a detailed account of this battle, in which Byng defeated the Spanish in a runup to the all but forgotten War of the Quadruple Alliance. (As a result of this war, Spain briefly held Pensacola, Florida.) Byng's performance in this victory did him little good when, thirty-nine years later, he was executed for supposedly failing to protect Minorca during the Seven Years War. In fact, he simply took the fall for the Admiralty at large, which was then in disarray. This rare broadside is accompanied by an article from the London Gazette of the next day, recapitulating the account of the battle as it appeared in the broadside. The broadside itself bears the manuscript notation "1 Sept. 1718." Rare. According to Worldcat, only the British Library hold a copy. Evenly tanned; in excellent condition.

Rogers, Woodes.
London, 1718. b/w folding maps. xix, 428, 57, (7) pp. “This work may be considered a buccaneering classic. With William Dampier as pilot, Captain Woodes Rogers’ privateering expedition set sail from Bristol. After sailing down the coast of Brazil and rounding Cape Horn, she made for the deserted island of Juan Fernandez... There Rogers rescued the celebrated Alexander Selkirk... The expedition then cruised the coast of Peru, taking various prizes, reached California, and crossed the Pacific to Asia.”—Hill 1479. It is generally supposed that Daniel Defoe based his “Robinson Crusoe” on this work, since it is the first to describe Selkirk. A large part of the book also relates to California and Mexico. This is the second “Corrected” edition of a book first published in 1712. It contains 5 folding maps by Moll and Senex, and an expanded appendix. Ink lines at bottom of title page and dedication, not obscuring any text. A very nice copy, bound in contemporary full calf “Cambridge style” binding, rebacked to match with gilt spine decorations, raised bands, and red spine label. Backstrip lightly scuffed.

Page de titre en rouge et noir. Reliure en plein maroquin vieux rouge ca 1860 non signé. Bretonnier was an avocat of the Paris Parlement. First published in 1718, his treatise went through five editions, the final appearing in 1783. All are scarce in North America. Buddeus, Johann Franz, Philosoph und Theologe (1667-1729).
Jena, 30. IX. 1718.. 1 S. Qu.-schmal-kl. 8vo.. "Aeterna sequamur memoriae caussa [!]".

A L¿Imprimerie Royale, Paris 1718 - quarto, 8 pages, trimmed at top and bottom edge, old armorial hand-stamp and manuscript notation on first page, small stain in blank margin, manuscript attestation or registration at La Rochelle 3 December, 1718, signed ¿Regnaud.¿ Grants exclusive rights for the Canadian beaver trade to John Law¿s Compagnie de l¿Occident, better known as the Mississippi Company. This was a key element in the finances of Law¿s company. In May 1716, the Banque Générale Privée, which developed the use of paper money, was set by convicted murderer and millionaire gambler John Law. It was a private bank, but three quarters of the capital consisted of government bills and government accepted notes. In August 1717, he bought the Mississippi Company to help the French colony in Louisiana. In the same year Law conceived a joint-stock trading company called the Compagnie d¿Occident, or literally ¿Company of the West.¿ Law was named Chief Director of this new company, which was granted a trade monopoly in August 1717, of the West Indies and North America by the French government. In Canada the company would trade in beaver skins. In Louisiana they would trade in precious metals. (see item number 33 below for the company¿s charter). Variant of Wroth and Annan, 642, the present example with different imprint. See Maggs, The French Colonisation of America, 111, for their offering of that variant issue (£10 10s). Not in Sabin, not in Lande, not in Staton & Tremaine, not in European Americana, not found in OCLC.
