CÉSAR Jules (Caius Julius Cæsar).
Van de Water, Traiecti ad Rhenum [Utrecht], 1718. In-16 (117 x 62 mm), 456 pp., 28 ff. n. ch., 3 cartes dépliantes. POLLINARI Giovanni Agostino
per Giuseppe Rosati, In Parma, 1718. In-4 (260x190 mm.), pp. 157, (5). Legatura in mezza pelle con fregi romantici e titolo incisi in oro al dorso. Tagli a spruzzo blu.
Cordier, Sinica col. 2098; Lust 355. First edition of the French translation of an account of the travels of the Swedish botanist Olof Torén (1718-1753), who served as chaplain to a Swedish East India Company voyage to China and India in the years 1750 and 1752. Torén recounted his voyage in a series of letters in Swedish to his former professor Linnaeus in Uppsala. During his travels, Torén sent many of the plants he found to Linnaeus, who even named one of the plants after him, the Torenia. Torén died shortly after finishing his travels, so Linnaeus himself decided to edit and publish the letters. The text is especially valuable for its botanical and agricultural information. With a bookplate on paste-down. Occasionally some minor foxing around the margins, otherwise in very good condition, wholly untrimmed.

Keill, John
Oxoniae [Oxford]: E Theatro Sheldoniano, 1718. FIRST EDITION, 8vo, pp. [viii], xv, [i], 495, [1] + 2 folding plates. Numerous woodcut diagrams within the text. Contemporary dark calf, panelled in blind, edges sprinkled red. Toned, some spotting. Sometime rebacked in morocco, no front flyleaf, hinges neatly relined. Booklabel of Calgarth Park (see below) to front pastedown, occasional substantial annotations in pencil and ink. The first publication of these introductory lectures on astronomy by the Scottish mathematician and disciple of Newton John Keill (1671-1721). Keill went from Edinburgh University to Balliol College, then on to become Savilian Professor of Astronomy, in which capacity he gave these lectures; they were translated into English in 1721. This copy belonged to Richard Watson (1737-1816), Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge. Watson had studied mathematics, and 'knew nothing at all of Chemistry, had never read a syllable on the subject; nor seen a single experiment in it; but [he] was tired with mathematics and natural philosophy' (Anecdotes, 28–9, quot. in ODNB), and so he became Professor of Chemistry in 1764. He moved on later to the regius chair of divinity (for which he was equally untrained), further attaining from political influence the bishopric of Llandaff, a sinecure for which he did little. An inheritance from a friend allowed him to purchase the estate of Calgarth, near Windermere, where he built Calgarth Park, and he was more involved in Lake District life, sparring with Wordsworth in print and corresponding with Coleridge. Rare first and only edition of a botanical work by the German clergyman-naturalist Jacob Christian Schaeffer (1718-1790). "His first botanical publication was an Isagoge in botanicam expeditiorem (1759), a preliminary to his Botanica expeditior of 1760. This guide to botany consists of an enumeration of all genera in tabular form, followed by extensive synonomy. The books brings little new but is interesting because it is one of the first few German works in which the Linnaean generic reform, taxonomic as well as nomenclatural, if fully accepted" (Stafleu). The present work includes a chapter explaining the classification systems of Tournefort, Rivinus and Linnaeus. HUNTER, William.
Choulant, pp. 296-297; ESTC T137584; Gaskell 56; Heirs of Hippocrates 942; Roberts & Tomlinson, pp. 460-465. Magnificent first edition of a bilingual (Latin and English) anatomical atlas on obstetrics and gynaecology, illustrated with 34 mostly life-sized and accurately detailed anatomical plates of pregnant women and their unborn children. William Hunter (1718-1783), royal physician and professor of anatomy at the Society of Naval Surgeons, wrote the preface and the notes to the plates, had the illustrations drawn under his supervision and worked closely with the engravers, who produced the plates at his expense. The work began when a young woman died suddenly at full term in 1751 and Hunter was able to procure her body before any deterioration. In the preface Hunter gives remarkable details about his techniques, such as "the injection of the blood-vessels" to preserve the body for the artists, and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of different kinds of anatomical illustration, which he mixes here. "One of the great publications of world medical literature as well as a classic of book production" (Heirs of Hippocrates) and "one of the great artistic achievements in medicine" (Haskell Norman). With the ca. 1800 ink stamp of "The Liverpool Library". Without the dedication leaf, fore-edge of plate VIII slightly shaved, a small restoration removing its engraver's name, a few other small marginal restorations, a crease in 1 plate and a few text leaves, and a faint marginal water stain in the last few leaves, but still generally in good condition. The marbled-paper sides … [Click Below for Full Description]

BUFFON, Georges Louis Leclerc, Comte de.
Ad 1: Nissen ZBI, 737; STCN (2 copies); ad 2: STCN (3 copies); cf. Nissen ZBI, 3639 (German editions). Ad 1: A separately published chapter from Buffon's Algemeene en byzondere natuurlijke historie (the Dutch translation of Buffon's Histoire naturelle), dealing with the hippopotamus, containing the same engraved plate, depicting the hippopotamus on a river bank, as the French edition published by Schneider at Amsterdam. The Dutch chapter contains some new additions, not included in the original French, including an interesting description by the Amsterdam physician J.C. Klockner of the preparation and stuffing of a dead hippopotamus that was shipped from the Cape of Good Hope to Amsterdam.Ad 2: First edition of the Dutch translation of Versuche mit Schnecken by the German entomologist, mycologist and clergyman Jacob Christian Schäffer (1718-1790). It is an account of many experiments executed on several species of snails to find out whether the heads, including the tentacles, grow back after decapitation, which Schäffer finds out to be the case. It includes 7 plates, all coloured by hand, showing different species of snails in different stages after their decapitation.Title-page slightly damaged, as if something was pasted on it and later removed, hardly affecting the text, slightly creased throughout with some occasional minor stains or foxing. Binding rubbed along the extremities with partly cracked hinges. Overall in good condition and only slightly trimmed, leaving most of the deckles intact.

LEEUWENHOEK, ANTONI VAN
Delft; Leiden: Daniel van Gaesbeeck and Cornelis Boutesteyn; Henrik van Kroonefelt and Adrian Beman, 1718. First edition. THE FIRST COMPLETE COLLECTION OF THE 165 LETTERS OF ANTONI VAN LEEUWENHOEK THAT WERE PUBLISHED IN HIS LIFETIME (IN THE ORIGINAL DUTCH, AND PRECEDING THE FIRST COMPLETE LATIN EDITION BY FOUR YEARS); INCLUDING HIS LETTERS TO THE ROYAL SOCIETY DESCRIBING THE FIRST-EVER OBSERVATIONS OF BACTERIA, SPERM CELLS, AND OTHER MICROSCOPIC OBJECTS AND PHENOMENA. Antoni van Leeuwenhoek -- a seventeenth-century Dutch draper, municipal official, and amateur scientist -- became skilled in the construction of simple (single-lens) microscopes, which he used to observe the "mysteries of nature." He described his observations in some two hundred letters to the Royal Society of London spanning a period of more than 45 years, of which 165 were published during his lifetime. The work offered here is the first collected edition of those letters, published when Leeuwenhoek was in his 80s. Leeuwenhoek's Life: Leeuwenhoek was born in the town of Delft in the Dutch Republic on October 24, 1632. His biographer and bibliographer, Clifford Dobell, states that "[a]ll the trustworthy evidence now available ... shows that [he] was a true Hollander of decent though not of aristocratic descent -- a child of fairly well-to-do tradespeople." CÉSAR Jules (Caius Julius Cæsar).
Traiecti ad Rhenum [Utrecht], Van de Water, 1718. In-16 (117 x 62 mm), 456 pp., 28 ff. n. ch., 3 cartes dépliantes. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

1718. Real survivor for 301 years old!! This Bible is a real piece of history, 301 years old and still holding up. Huge...15 7/16" tall X 9 3/4" wide and 4 7/8" thick, weighs 15lbs. Dated 1718 on both Old Testament and New Testament front pages. It is complete with Old and New Testaments. Both covers are attached and pages are all attached. Numerous beautiful fold out maps. The amazing thing is that this Bible does not look like it was ever restored or repaired. All leather seems to be original and the covers are still firmly attached. The adornment of original brass hardware plus the excellent condition of the leather for being original tells me this Bible sat in a church or library its' life. The brass hardware: clasps and bottom clasp mount on rear cover are missing. I've been collecting Bibles many years, something like this doesn't come around very often, if at all. No disappointments.
