[SARTORIUS, Johann Christoph and Caspar WUSSIN].
Nissen, ZBI 3587; Wood, p. 489; WorldCat (6 copies). Rare first and only edition of a zoological work in which the anonymous authors describe fifty animals. The book is divided into two parts, describing thirty mammals in the first, and twenty birds in the second part, also including dragons and griffins. Each animal is illustrated on a half-page engraving, which is followed by a poem, a zoological description, and stories or sayings mostly of a moralistic nature. The names of the animals are given in German, Latin and Czech. The mythological animals, like the unicorn, phoenix, dragon, etc., are included with the added remark that their existence has not been proven conclusively. The large engraved frontispiece shows Adam in the Garden of Eden, playing a harp and surrounded by listening animals.Slightly browned, some thumbed margins and a few small spots, otherwise in very good condition. Binding rubbed along the extremities, otherwise good.

Dugdale, Sir William. Stevens, John.
London, R. Harbin [etc.], 1718 [and] London: Thomas Taylor [etc.], 1722-23. 3 vols., folio, vol. I, t/p printed in red and black, xvi, 375, (9, index); vol. II, t/p printed in red and black, [xii], 538, (2, index); vol. III, t/p printed in red and black, (2), 279, 388 (appendix), (6, index) pp. With an engraved general title-page to vol. I, 103 engraved plates in vol. I including 24 double-page, 20 engraved plates in vol. II including 4 double-page, and 31 engraved plates in vol. III including one folding. In all, one engraved title and 154 plates including 28 double-page and 1 folding. Contemporary red morocco, backstrips richly gilt, gilt edges, corners and headcaps a bit worn as usual for folios, a glorious set with an astonishing provenance. Large-paper copy, from the collections of MacCarthy-Reagh, Duc de Noailles, Rosebery, Lynde, McLaughlin, and Bernard Breslauer; Jonathan Hill cat. 200 #228 (sold to a private collector, CA). A beautiful set of the first abridged edition of this magnificent work on English churches and religious orders, profusely illustrated with views of the churches and the habits of the various orders of monks and nuns. Collations are haphazard for this set, with copies at auction recorded with 140-150 plates; this copy has 154 and is quite complete. Lowndes notes: “An excellent epitome” and calls for 151 plates, giving a full collation of all the plates and erratic pagination. The difference may be attributable to not counting some double-page plates.

Blair, Hugh
8vo 2 vols. 395, 396 pp. Original boards, rebacked. Vol. I lacks title page. Library stamp on title page, and bindings worn. Some foxing, but internally quite clean. This collection contains fifty sermons by Blair, and the subjects covered range from death and morality to the duties belonging to middle age. Blair (1718-1800) was born in Scotland, and would become an author and a prominent clergyman. He would also become an active lecturer, and rose to prominence "in the field of rhetoric." Blair was however, very conservative politically, and fiercely opposed the American War of Independence, and felt American were reacting to imaginary oppression. Around the time Blair would have a debate on this subject with James Boswell, who had a different point of view, he would begin the publish his "Sermons." The original series would be published in five volumes between 1877 and 1801. This set is complete, but covers material published by 1792, and is from the press of Isaiah Thomas. ODNB. Evans 24118.

DUGUET (Jacques Joseph)].
Jacques Estienne, 1718. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Johnson, 1718. Euro 200.00 ~~~ SPEDIZIONE IN ITALIA SEMPRE TRACCIATA
