BUFFON, Georges Louis Leclerc, Comte de.
Ad 1: Nissen ZBI, 737; STCN (2 copies); ad 2: STCN (3 copies); cf. Nissen ZBI, 3639 (German editions). Ad 1: A separately published chapter from Buffon's Algemeene en byzondere natuurlijke historie (the Dutch translation of Buffon's Histoire naturelle), dealing with the hippopotamus, containing the same engraved plate, depicting the hippopotamus on a river bank, as the French edition published by Schneider at Amsterdam. The Dutch chapter contains some new additions, not included in the original French, including an interesting description by the Amsterdam physician J.C. Klockner of the preparation and stuffing of a dead hippopotamus that was shipped from the Cape of Good Hope to Amsterdam.Ad 2: First edition of the Dutch translation of Versuche mit Schnecken by the German entomologist, mycologist and clergyman Jacob Christian Schäffer (1718-1790). It is an account of many experiments executed on several species of snails to find out whether the heads, including the tentacles, grow back after decapitation, which Schäffer finds out to be the case. It includes 7 plates, all coloured by hand, showing different species of snails in different stages after their decapitation.Title-page slightly damaged, as if something was pasted on it and later removed, hardly affecting the text, slightly creased throughout with some occasional minor stains or foxing. Binding rubbed along the extremities with partly cracked hinges. Overall in good condition and only slightly trimmed, leaving most of the deckles intact.

An important work by the archbishop of Cambrai, "wherein he entered an eloquent plea for greater simplicity and naturalness in the pulpit, and urged preachers to take the scriptural, natural style of Bossuet as their model, rather than the coldly analytical eloquence of his great rival, Bourdaloue" (EB-11). [NORTON, ANDREWS, ATTRIBUTED COMPILER]
Cambridge: Sold at the Ladies' Fair, Held on the 17th and 18th of July, 1839, 1718. First and only edition. American Imprints 57734. Cloth a little worn; very good copy.. Small oblong 8vo, original blind-stamped brown cloth, gilt lettering. Separately printed "Key to Original Charades" laid in. An unusual and charming collection of 68 literary riddles in verse, preceded by a 16-page introduction on the history of charades. Though issued anonymously, all indications of responsibility point to Harvard professor and theologian Andrews Norton (1786-1853), and the separately printed key with this copy supports that: 20 of the 68 charades listed are identified in a contemporary hand as being by "A.N." Several others are identified as being by "M.E.D" and "Mrs. F." There are riddles on a variety of subjects, including Wordsworth, Goldsmith, Lowell, and Edgeworth; and there are two attributed to fictional characters Jonathan Oldbuck (from Scott's The Antiquary) and Sir Charles Grandison (from Richardson's novel). On the front free endpaper is the ink ownership signature of distinguished American maritime historian Samuel Eliot Morrison.

I, 103 engraved plates in vol. I including 24 double-page, 20 engraved plates in vol. II including 4 double-page, and 31 engraved plates in vol. III including one folding. In all, one engraved title and 154 plates including 28 double-page and 1 folding. Contemporary red morocco, backstrips richly gilt, gilt edges, corners and headcaps a bit worn as usual for folios, a glorious set with an astonishing provenance. Large-paper copy, from the collections of MacCarthy-Reagh, Duc de Noailles, Rosebery, Lynde, McLaughlin, and Bernard Breslauer; Jonathan Hill cat. 200 #228 (sold to a private collector, CA). A beautiful set of the first abridged edition of this magnificent work on English churches and religious orders, profusely illustrated with views of the churches and the habits of the various orders of monks and nuns. Collations are haphazard for this set, with copies at auction recorded with 140-150 plates; this copy has 154 and is quite complete. Lowndes notes: “An excellent epitome” and calls for 151 plates, giving a full collation of all the plates and erratic pagination. The difference may be attributable to not counting some double-page plates.
