NEWTON, Isaac.
London: Printed for William and John Innys, 1718 - Octavo (195 x 123 mm). Recent brown half calf, rebacked to style, red label to spine lettered in gilt, original marbled paper sides, edges speckled red. Contemporary ink inscriptions to 23 pages. Top edge dust toned, minor rubbing to boards, light foxing throughout; an excellent copy. With 12 engraved folding plates. With single leaf of adverts at rear. First octavo edition, second issue, second overall edition. The first issue of the second edition was released in 1717. Newton's major work on his corpuscular or emission theory of light, "a work of great authority" (PMM) both on its first publication in 1704 and in the present day. "The Opticks of 1704–6, generalizing the message of the Principia, issued a manifesto of his new programme. The mechanical philosophy with its imagined mechanisms of imagined particles was out. Forces mathematically defined, explaining observed motions in a quantitatively precise manner, formed the centrepiece of Newtonian science. Modern science has shaped itself accordingly. The same Opticks also contained at the end the first full papers in mathematics that Newton made public" (ODNB). The number of queries in this edition was increased to 31, including the "celebrated Query No. 28 on the nature of light". This copy with errata corrected in a contemporary hand on 23 pages. Babson 134; Gray p. 36; See Printing and the Mind of Man 172.

In the early eighteenth century, grand juries were often an integral part of civil and criminal matters heard in the Court of Quarter Sessions and the six-monthly Assizes. These charges outline the duties of grand jurors and their importance. Their appeals to patriotism and duty reflect the reluctance of many men to serve as grand jurors. As it is today, service on a grand jury required a considerable commitment of time, energy and expense. English Short-Title Catalogue T17516, T17515. [Attributes: First Edition]

JOBLOT, Louis. Paris: Collombat. 1718.Small quarto. Contemporary full calf, gilt spine with red morocco gilt label, marbled endpapers; pp. [x] + 78 + 96 + [v, contents], 34 plates, engraved headpieces; binding a little bumped to extremities, previous owner's bookplate to front pastedown, manuscript notes in ink to flyleaf, previous owner's signature to title page, internally very clean and bright, very good.First edition. Louis Joblot (1645-1723) is now overshadowed by his contemporary Leeuwenhoek but was an equally innovative scientist. In this volume, his landmark work and the first French book on microscopical research, he presents his own technical improvements to the microscope, his observations of protozoa and, crucially, his rejection of spontaneous generation. He observed many animalcules for the first time, classifiying them according to shape, and was the leading discoverer of infusoria until 1773, making this book an important document of early microbiology.#2096023

BUFFON, Georges Louis Leclerc, Comte de.
1718. Ad 1: Nissen ZBI, 737; STCN (2 copies); ad 2: STCN (3 copies); cf. Nissen ZBI, 3639 (German editions). Ad 1: A separately published chapter from Buffon's Algemeene en byzondere natuurlijke historie (the Dutch translation of Buffon's Histoire naturelle), dealing with the hippopotamus, containing the same engraved plate, depicting the hippopotamus on a river bank, as the French edition published by Schneider at Amsterdam. Klockner of the preparation and stuffing of a dead hippopotamus that was shipped from the Cape of Good Hope to Amsterdam.Ad 2: First edition of the Dutch translation of Versuche mit Schnecken by the German entomologist, mycologist and clergyman Jacob Christian Schäffer (1718-1790). It is an account of many experiments executed on several species of snails to find out whether the heads, including the tentacles, grow back after decapitation, which Schäffer finds out to be the case. It includes 7 plates, all coloured by hand, showing different species of snails in different stages after their decapitation.Title-page slightly damaged, as if something was pasted on it and later removed, hardly affecting the text, slightly creased throughout with some occasional minor stains or foxing. Binding rubbed along the extremities with partly cracked hinges. Overall in good condition and only slightly trimmed, leaving most of the deckles intact. [Attributes: First Edition]

Cardinal de RETZ
Second edition. A rare counterfeit of the first edition of a rare rarity that appeared in Nancy in 1717. This edition will also be given in Cologne at David Roger, who seems to be a fictional publisher. Title pages in red and black.Bindings in full brown contemporary brown. Back to Jansenist nerves. Title and tomato pieces in red morocco. The backs are darker. Friction. A tiny hole of worms at the tail of volume I, as well as on the upper bit at the top. Good copy.Paul de Gondi wrote his memoirs at the request of his friends, at the time of his exile, about the age of sixty (about 1675 - 1677), and composed the autobiography of a politician in a contemporary of civil war. Sling. Not content to be a historical testimony of the foremost, the work is among the literary monuments of the eighteenth and memoirs and other autobiographies; by his precise alert style, that of a man of action and intrigues of remarkable intelligence and political ambition always on the alert (always ready to ally himself with those who had betrayed him the day before). His memoirs will constitute a revenge and his last spring of ambition.Ex libris handwritten at the bottom of the title page: A. Germain, parish priest of Reilhac. S.n. Guerreiro, João Tavares de Velez.
1718. 8vo. (16), 427, (1) pp. With each page in a frame of thick-thin rules, mitred at the corners, 4 woodcut headpieces (plus 1 repeat) including 1 with the Portuguese coat of arms, 1 woodcut tailpiece, woodcut decorated initials. Contemp. tanned sheepskin, gold-tooled spine with red morocco label, rebacked. Second edition (after the 1718 Macao edition printed entirely from woodblocks) of a journal of the voyage of António de Albuquerque Coelho (ca. 1682-1745) from Goa in India to Macao on the coast of southern China. The journal was written by João Tavares de Velez Guerreiro, a captain in the Portuguese navy serving in India, who accompanied the governor on the voyage as his chief of staff. Coelho had been appointed governor of the city of Macao in 1717, and they arrived there in May 1718. They travelled via Madras, through the Malay peninsula and along the coasts of Indochina and China. Part 1 gives an account of the voyage itself and part 2 an account of their stay in Johor at the southern tip of the Malay peninsula, where they played a role in a Sumatran adventurer's coup d'état. The two parts of the text are not bibliographically separate, part 2 beginning on p. 187, halfway through quire M. The publisher Jaime (or Jayme) de la Te y Sagau, better known for his musical publications and his own musical compositions, dedicated the book to the Duke of Cadaval, ending the dedication with a sonnet. It mentions the first Duke, Nuno Álvares Pereira de Melo, but he appears to have died in 1725 or 1727, so it may be directed to the third Duke Jaime (1684-1749). - Printed on thi … [Click Below for Full Description]

JOBLOT, Louis.
Paris: Collombat. 1718. Small quarto. Contemporary full calf, gilt spine with red morocco gilt label, marbled endpapers; pp. [x] + 78 + 96 + [v, contents], 34 plates, engraved headpieces; binding a little bumped to extremities, previous owner's bookplate to front pastedown, manuscript notes in ink to flyleaf, previous owner's signature to title page, internally very clean and bright, very good. First edition. He observed many animalcules for the first time, classifiying them according to shape, and was the leading discoverer of infusoria until 1773, making this book an important document of early microbiology.

Kupferstich, 1718, 32 x 22 cm. Baglivi, Giorgio:
Leipzig, bey Joh. Herbordt Klossen (II: Leipzig, bey Moritz George Weidmann). 1718. - 8°. 14 n.n. Bl., 674 S., 13 n.n. Bl. Register, 1 S. Druckfehler, 1 w. Bl.; 6 n.n. Bl., 440 S., 9 n.n. Bl. - II: Nicht bei Blake, Wellcome u.a. - Garrison-Morton 2121 (für die erste lateinische Ausgabe von 1700). - Erste deutsche Einzelausgabe. [Click Below for Full Description]

Its title, Cautio Criminalis, was generic, simply meaning a warning in a matter of criminal law. But its subtitle `or a Book on Witch Trials (seu de Processibus contra Sagas Liber)`, identified its real content. Unlike many books published in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, however, it did not encourage the princes to hunt, try and burn witches or instruct judges and inquisitors on how to identify witches and force them to confess. Rather, it argued that the plague of witches supposedly infesting Germany was the product of the trials themselves and urged princes to supervise trials closely, to regulate the use of torture strictly, and even to end witch tr … [Click Below for Full Description]

MALISPINI Ricordano.
Per Gio: Gaetano Tartini e Santi Franchi, In Firenze 1718 - Cm.24,8x18. Pg.XXXXVIII, 378. Esemplare in barbe. > Moreni, II, 14-15 (riferendosi all'edizione cinquecentesca), ".
