Pitton de Tournefort, Joseph
London D. Browne, A. Bell, J. Darby et al, 1718. First edition in English. Two volumes, 4to, pp.xlii (a1-4 misbound), 402; [iv], 398, [18, index]; with 149 plates, plans, and maps (of 153), 7 folding. A handsomely bound set in 20th-century tan calf, spines with raised bands, gilt. Some spotting and one stain to bottom margin throughout. A number of plates heavily foxed, two plates badly torn, but without damage to images. Lacking four plates, depicting the women of Milo, Pathmos, a map of Pathmos, and Gallipoli. Armorial bookplates of Richard Grosvenor of Eaton relaid on pastedowns. Joseph Pitton de Tournefort (1656-1708), a French botanist, was appointed assistant at the Jardin des Plantes in 1683. At the suggestion of Louis Phélypeaux, Comte de Ponchartrain, he was sent on a mission to the Levant by Louis XIV in 1700, accompanied by the artist Claude Aubriet, and the German botanist Andreas Gundelsheimer. Tournefort travelled extensively in the Greek islands, including Crete, and proceeded to Constantinople, which he discusses in great detail. From Constantinople, he travelled along the Black Sea coast, to Georgia, and Armenia, returning to Paris in 1702. The expedition was a success: Tournefort collected 1356 previously unrecorded botanical specimens, and Aubriet sketched specimens, people, and buildings, as well as maps of a number of the places visited. The engraved illustrations in our copy are all after Aubriet's drawings, bar the large folding map. This edition not in Atabey or Blackmer [Attributes: First Edition]

J., G.
London: Sackfield, 1718. First Edition. Hardcover. Item #27688 [12], 239, [26]pp. Modern full dark brown calf, spine with four raised bands, lettered and decorated in gold. Head-pieces and tail-pieces. A nice copy of a scarce early geographic gazetteer with a decidedly anglo-centric view of the world. The descriptions of most other countries are particularly amusing. A section is dedicated to the United States (which gets the same treatment as the rest of the world) with brief descriptions for Virginia, Maryland, New England, New York, Florida, Carolina. Includes tables with the distances from London to the main English cities, the cities and principal market towns in Great Britain, and the foreign towns. Old, faint dampstain to fore edge affecting three of the leaves, a few occasional small spots and creases. A very good+ copy. ; 16mo. [Attributes: First Edition]

Longus
Paris: Not Stated, 1718. Bound in the original leather with gilt lettering and decoration. Scarce. A very important work, of which only 250 copies were said to have been printed. Here in the original leather binding and exceptional unrestored condition. The plates are engraved by Benoit Audran after Phillipe d'Orleans, Regent of France from 1715, under the instruction of Coypel in 1714, with the frontis after Coypel himself. Without 'des Petits Pieds' from the 1728 edition which sometimes is bound in later but is not meant to be in the original first edition as it was suppressed until 1728. This is clearly the original binding and is untouched. Collated, complete. With 'Bibliotheque de Mr A. Houbigant' bookseller labels on the front and rear pastedowns. Daphnis and Chloé is the only known work of the 2nd century AD Greek novelist and romancer Longus. Its style is rhetorical and pastoral, its shepherds and shepherdesses are wholly conventional, but the author imparts human interest to this idealized world. Daphnis and Chloe resembles a modern novel more than does its chief rival among Greek erotic romances. Longus was a Greek novelist and romancer, and author of Daphnis and Chloé. Very little is known of his life, and it is assumed that he lived on the isle of Lesbos, the setting for Daphnis and Chloe, during the 2nd century AD. It has been suggested that the name Longus is merely a misinterpretation of the last word of Daphnis and Chloe's original title in the Florentine manuscript. If his name was really Longus, he was probably a freedman of some Roman family which bore th … [Click Below for Full Description]

GALILEI, GALILEO
Florence [Firenze]: Tartini, 1718. SECOND EDITION, THE FIRST "COMPLETE" EDITION. Contemporary vellum. Very Good. SECOND EDITION, THE FIRST "COMPLETE" EDITION, of Galileo's collected works; an important edition containing a wealth of material (nearly all of volume 3) not included in the 1655-56 first collected edition. PHALARIS, spurious.)
Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1718. Octavo (191 x 118 mm). Contemporary panelled calf, covers tooled in blind, red speckled edges. Mid-18th-century bookplate and ownership signature of Charles Jenner to pastedown. Tiny wear to tips and minor mark to front cover, label lost. An excellent copy, contents clean and fresh, joints intact with very little wear to the binding. Engraved frontispiece of Phalaris being burnt in the brazen bull; printer's device on title page. Second British edition in the original Greek, following the first of 1695, with translations into English having been printed in 1699 and 1706. The work is printed in Greek with the Latin translation underneath. Phalaris was a tyrant king in Sicily in the 6th century BC, who was rehabilitated by Lucian into a humane leader and a patron of literature. The present epistles, written in around the 2nd century and spuriously attributed to Phalaris, became popular when published by Charles Boyle, fourth earl of Orrery, in 1695, though their authorship led to controversy. In his 1699 treatise Dissertation on the Epistles of Phalaris the classical scholar Richard Bentley proved the Epistles were a Roman invention. The controversy is included by Jonathan Swift in The Battle of the Books. ESTC T144295. [Attributes: First Edition]

Born in 1645 in Bar-le-Duc, Lorraine to a prosperous merchant family, Joblot was appointed assistant professor of mathematics at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1680 (he was appointed full professor in 1699). There he lectured art students on perspective, geometry, and optics, leading to his personal pursuit of microscopy during the period from 1680-1716. The publication of this work in 1718 established Joblot as the first French microscopist. POLENI, Giovanni.
Patavii [Padua]: Typis Josephi Comini. FIRST EDITION. Poleni's second work on hydraulics, with "reports on experiments on water flow and on the force exerted by an impacting fluid" (DSB). Poleni was the most prominent Italian hydraulics engineer of the early eighteenth century. "As an engineer, Poleni was a consultant in matters of water supply and flood control and an arbitrator between rulers of neighbouring states. His principal contributions to hydraulics were threefold. In his De Castellis of 1718 he cited measurements indicating the coefficient of contraction for a sharp-edges orifice to be 0.62, a considerable improvement upon Newton's value 1/√2. He also experimented with short tubes attached to the orifice and found that a maximum rate of eflux was obtained with an intermediate length of tube" (Rouse & Ince, History of hydraulics, p. 113).4to, 3 leaves, pp. 65, (1), 2 leaves (licence leaf and colophon with woodcut coat-of-arms), 1 stilted engraved plate. Woodcut initials and ornaments. Original carta rustica boards (tear in top of spine), uncut, spine overlayed at an early date with marbled paper now torn and with pieces missing. PETIT, Pierre.
Leiden, J. A. Langerak, 1718. 12mo. engr. extra title,+ (6),+ 324; (2),+ 325-621 pp,+ 2 engr. plates,+ folding engr. map. With 47 engraving in text, with coins, gems and statuettes. Titles printed in red and black. Minor spotting. Contemporary full cald, slightly worn gilt spine with raised bands and red label, marbled edges. Engraved bookplate. Brunet IV, 529. Not in Cicognara.

JOBLOT, Louis
1718. Paris: Collombat. 1718. Small quarto. Contemporary full calf, gilt spine with red morocco gilt label, marbled endpapers; pp. [x] + 78 + 96 + [v, contents], 34 plates, engraved headpieces; binding a little bumped to extremities, previous owner's bookplate to front pastedown, manuscript notes in ink to flyleaf, previous owner's signature to title page, internally very clean and bright, very good. First edition. Louis Joblot (1645-1723) is now overshadowed by his contemporary Leeuwenhoek but was an equally innovative scientist. In this volume, his landmark work and the first French book on microscopical research, he presents his own technical improvements to the microscope, his observations of protozoa and, crucially, his rejection of spontaneous generation. He observed many animalcules for the first time, classifiying them according to shape, and was the leading discoverer of infusoria until 1773, making this book an important document of early microbiology.

1718. Paris: Collombat. 1718. Small quarto. Contemporary half calf; pp. [x] + 78 + 96 + [v, contents], 34 plates, engraved headpieces; binding a little rubbed, stain to pp. 7-8, otherwise very good. Provenance: with ownership signature of Lorenz Oken to front pastedown. Oken (1779 - 1851) was a leading German naturalist who, inspired by Kant and Goethe as much as by natural science, conceived of nature as a whole organism rather than a collection of discrete components, much in the manner of Humboldt. He produced his own system of animal classification based on the sophistication of the sense organs and noted many of the homologies between human and animal physiologies that, later in the nineteenth century, made clear the evolutionary origins of man. Also with the bookplates of W.H. van Seters, Dutch biliophile and writer, and Librarie Alain Brieux, the well-known Paris bookseller, to the front pastedown and an oval inkstamp bearing the word 'Geneve' to ffep. First edition. Louis Joblot (1645-1723) is now overshadowed by his contemporary Leeuwenhoek but was an equally innovative scientist.
