Opticks: or, a Treatise of the Reflections, Refractions, Inflections and Colours of Light. The Second Edition, with Additions

Twelve folding engraved plates. 4 p.l., 382 pp., one leaf of ads. 8vo, cont. English panelled calf (well-rebacked with the orig. red morocco label laid-down, two corners a bit worn, a little dusty). London: W. & J. Innys, 1718. Second edition, revised and enlarged by Newton. This is the second issue with the title-page dated 1718 (1st issue: 1717). For this second edition, the first in octavo, the plates were newly engraved to suit the new format. While Newton left the body of the treatise largely untouched, "the number of Queries at the end was increased from 16 to 31, including the celebrated Query No. 28 on the nature of light."-Babson, I, p. 67. Very good copy with a few plates just shaved. Contemporary signature on free front endpaper: "Ex libris Hci Jefferson. ex ColI: Div: Joh: Cant: Dec: 27mo die, 1719. Pre: 6." ❧ Babson 134. .

A Cruising Voyage Round the World:

London: Andrew Bell and Bernard Lintot, , 1718. First to the South-Sea, thence to the East-Indies, and Homewards by the Cape of Good Hope. Begun in 1708, and finish'd in 1771. Containing a Journal of all the Remarkable Transactions... An Account of Alexander Selkirk's living alone Four Years and Four Months in an Island... With Maps of all the Coast, from the best Spanish Manuscript Draughts. And an Introduction relating to the South-Sea Trade. By... Commander in Chief in this Expedition, with the Ships Duke and Dutchess of Bristol. Second Edition, Corrected. Octavo (196 × 118 mm). Contemporary sprinkled calf, red morocco label to the spine, bands, double rules to the compartments, double ruled panels to the boards, edges sprinkled red. Folding map frontispiece, map of the world in two hemispheres with track of the expedition and 4 other folding maps. A little rubbed, neatly rebacked with the original spine, restored, laid down, light browning, but overall a very good copy. First published in 1712, Woodes's journal was an immediate success and is widely considered to be "a buccaneering classic" (Hill). Born in Bristol around 1679, Rogers made an advantageous marriage in 1705, his wife being the daughter of Admiral Whetstone, commander in chief in the West Indies. This may well have stood him in good stead when he proposed to the merchants of Bristol a scheme to challenge the French and Spanish monopoly of trade in the South Sea. "Two merchant ships, the Duke and the Duchess, were fitted out. A number of noted officers were included, perhaps the most noteworthy being Captain William Dampier, master of the Duke and pilot of the expedition. The crew comprised an eclectic combination mainly of 'Tinkers, Taylors, Hay-makers, Pedlers, Fiddlers etc.' Rogers and his motley crew set sail aboard the Duke from King Road, near Bristol, on 2 August 1708" (ODNB). They met with early success when on their way to the Cape Verde Islands they captured a Spanish merchantman, and by December had reached Brazil. Rounding Cape Horn early in 1709 they reached the Juan Fernandez Islands where they encountered Alexander Selkirk ("a man cloth'd in goat-skins, who look'd wilder than the first owners of them") who had been willingly marooned there by Thomas Stradling, and who became the model for Robinson Crusoe. Off Peru they took another vessel, and another out of Lima, in which action Woodes's brother was killed. Despite the loss, the party successfully attacked Guayaquil, then headed for Gorgona, off Colombia, in order to recuperate from a fever which was rife amongst the crew. At the beginning of October the fleet was off Mexico near to the tip of Baja California and encountered and took the Manila galleon Nueva Señora de la Encarnacíon Desengano, "her hold crammed with riches" (Howgego). An attempt on the treasure ship's larger sister ship was repulsed, and in January 1710 the expedition set off westward across the Pacific. Their circumnavigation was completed via Guam, the Moluccas, Batavia and the Cape of Good Hope. Woodes's "epoch-making voyage" was completed on his return to the Thames in October 1711. "The total value of the captured treasure was estimated (then) at £800,000 and was divided among the crew according to shareholding determined prior to the voyage" (Howgego). News of this "well-organized and sympathetically commanded" expedition spread fast, "stimulated public interest, and, encouraged by his friends, Rogers agreed to publish his 'journal'" (ODNB).

1718. QUINCY, John. PHARMACOPOEIA OFFICINALIS & EXTEMPORANEA; or, a Compleat English Dispensatory, in Four Parts. Containing: I. The Theory of Pharmacy, and the several Processes therein. II. A Description of the Officinal Simples, with their Virtues and Preparations, Galenical and Chymical. III. The Officinal Compositions... IV. Extemporaneous Prescriptions... London: A. Bell, 1718. First edition. xvi, 618, [54 ] pp. Octavo, nineteenth-century half leather, somewhat rubbed and worn. Quincy's name crossed out in ink on title and dedication; half-inch tear to edge of first four leaves; spotting and soil passim. This popular and encyclopedic English Dispensatory ran to twelve editions by 1749. Quincy was a London apothecary, trained in Edinburgh, who had little respect for other pharmaceutical writers. From the Preface to this work: "Although dispensatory writers and publishers of recipes have been at all times very numerous... the least able have fallen upon this task... That most persons are fond of works of this kind is manifest from their esteem even of the worst, and the universal reception of Salmon's, which are as bad as they are voluminous," Quite scarce. Titelbladet trykt i rød og sort. (2),70 pp. Lille hul nederst på sidste blads margin, en svaghed i papiret. Rent frisk eksemplar med brede marginer (ubeskåret !).Bound uncut in a very nice later half vellum binding w. gilt leather title-label. Old marbled paper over boards. Title-page printed in red and black. A small hole to the margin of final leaf, due to a weakness in the paper. A nice, clean copy with wide margins (uncut!). (2), 70 pp.. Originaludgaven. Scarce first edition of the first handbook of Swedish anatomy. The importance of the work also lies in its introduction of several anatomical terms to Swedish.Roberg was the teacher of Carl Linné, and he taught medicine at Uppsala University from 1697 until 1740. He also founded the Nosocomium academicum, the later Uppsala Academy Hospital. There are at least five variant-printings of the first edition. Our copy seems to be the first, which is very scarce. The variants are difficult to determine, but the pointers are to be found in the quotations in the recto and verso of the title-page. According to Gustav Rudbeck's essay in "Nordisk Tidsskrift för Bok-og Biblioteksväsen", the copies with quotation of Ruffus Ephesius on the title-page are among the first issues. Our copy has the following pointers: 1. Rufus-quotation on the title-page, 2. The verso of the title-page only has the large printer's device (stylized leaves, and the bird Phoenix hovering above a fire, lit up by the rays of the sun, with a band with the words "Qui aluit Spero reseminabit") and no quotations. 3. Without the later printed addition to the pages 15-16, but with the original "Tale" as catch.word. 4. The last leaf ends with a Phoenix bird printed in red. That the Rufus-printings belong among the first, is further backed by the fact that the word "Vederbörandes" is placed so high on the title-page that there is no distance between that and the line above it. The placing of this word seems to be corrected in later issues
