Monasticon Anglicanum: or, The History of the Ancient Abbies, Monasteries, Hospitals, Cathedral and Collegiate Churches, with their Dependencies, in England and Wales: also of all such Scotch, Irish, and French monasteries as in any manner relate to those in England

England...Illustrated with the Original Cuts of the Cathedral and Collegiate Churches, and Habits of the Religious and Military Orders...the Whole Corrected, and Supplied with many Useful Additions, by an Eminent Hand [John Stevens]. Engraved frontis. & 151 engraved plates (some folding). Titles printed in red & black. Four parts in three vols. Large folio (442 x 278 mm.), cont. red morocco (corners & headcaps a bit worn, minor rubbing to joints), triple gilt fillet round sides, spines elaborately gilt, a.e.g. London: R. Harbin et al., 1718-22-23-23. A magnificent large-paper set, with a very distinguished provenance (see below), magnificently bound in contemporary red morocco. Dugdale's Monasticon Anglicanum (1st ed.: 1655-73) "gave the history of the various orders in England, and an account of all the individual monasteries. The surviving foundation charters, and charters relating to the growth of the monastery, were printed in full, and all known benefactions of land made to the monastery were set down. Monasticon Anglicanum established for the first time the importance of charters as a primary source for the writing of medieval history, and as a source for understanding the legal practice of earlier centuries and aspects of the feudal system relating to conditions of tenure. Equally it established for the first time since the Reformation the importance of monasteries and the scale of their territorial possessions. In Elizabethan and Jacobean times monasteries had been a reviled institution, associated only with superstition, idleness, and all the faults of the old religion...Dugdale established monastic history as a legitimate subject of study... "Editions of Dugdale's work continued to appear after his death as scholars polished and quarried his researches. His place in the annals of historical scholarship is an honourable one. His speciality was the retrieval of factual information relating to the great institutions of the middle ages: the monasteries, the legal system, and the aristocracy. The scale of his operations was greater than any previous endeavour, and its achievements were astonishing, especially in view of the disorder of the records from which he worked. Monasticon Anglicanum opened up a new area of historical research, and provided the foundations for such future investigations."-ODNB (for Dugdale). This edition in English, edited and enlarged by John Stevens (ca. 1662-1726), was "followed by a two-volume supplement (1722-3), containing some 500 additional monastic charters in English translation. It improved on Dugdale by covering the mendicant orders and including biographical accounts of monastic writers, and for the first time it treated pre- and post-Reformation monastic history as a continuum. Stevens did not attempt the task of historical interpretation (partly to avoid the charge of Catholic bias), and his presentation of the documents in English translation rather than in the original Latin did not please the academic purists (such as Thomas Hearne), but these criticisms are outweighed by the scale of his single-handed achievement as a collector of scattered material who opened up the monastic past to a non-professional readership."-ODNB (for Stevens). A fine set. The MacCarthy-Reagh (sale 1815, lots 4134-35 to Debure) -- Duc de Noailles (bookplate, sale 1835, lot 376) -- Rosebery (bookplate) -- Lynde (bookplate) -- McLaughlin (sale 7 October 1980, lot 1691) -- Breslauer (sale 27 & 28 June 2005, lot 968) set. .

        PHARMACOPOEIA OFFICINALIS & EXTEMPORANEA

1718. QUINCY, John. PHARMACOPOEIA OFFICINALIS & EXTEMPORANEA; or, a Compleat English Dispensatory, in Four Parts. Containing: I. The Theory of Pharmacy, and the several Processes therein. II. A Description of the Officinal Simples, with their Virtues and Preparations, Galenical and Chymical. III. The Officinal Compositions... IV. Extemporaneous Prescriptions... London: A. Bell, 1718. First edition. xvi, 618, [54 ] pp. Octavo, nineteenth-century half leather, somewhat rubbed and worn. Quincy's name crossed out in ink on title and dedication; half-inch tear to edge of first four leaves; spotting and soil passim. This popular and encyclopedic English Dispensatory ran to twelve editions by 1749. Quincy was a London apothecary, trained in Edinburgh, who had little respect for other pharmaceutical writers. From the Preface to this work: "Although dispensatory writers and publishers of recipes have been at all times very numerous... the least able have fallen upon this task... That most persons are fond of works of this kind is manifest from their esteem even of the worst, and the universal reception of Salmon's, which are as bad as they are voluminous," Quite scarce. (Wellcome IV, 457).

Les Amours pastorales de Daphnis et Chlo?

nbsp;Paris, 1718 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. The scarce 'Regent' edition of Daphnis et Chlo, with illustrations from Benoit Audran and Philippe Charles d'Orlans. Bound in the original leather with gilt lettering and decoration. Scarce. A very important work, of which only 250 copies were said to have been printed. Here in the original leather binding and exceptional unrestored condition. The plates are engraved by Benoit Audran after Phillipe d'Orleans, Regent of France from 1715, under the instructionof Coypel in 1714, with the frontis after Coypel himself. Without 'des Petits Pieds' from the 1728 edition which sometimes is bound in later but is not meant to be in the original first edition as it was suppressed until 1728. This is clearly the original binding and is untouched. Collated, complete. With 'Bibliotheque de Mr A. Houbigant' bookseller labels on the front and rear pastedowns. Daphnis and Chlo is the only known work of the 2nd century AD Greek novelist and romancer Longus. Its style is rhetorical and pastoral, its shepherds and shepherdesses are wholly conventional, but the author imparts human interest to this idealized world. Daphnis and Chloe resembles a modern novel more than does its chief rival among Greek erotic romances. Longus was a Greek novelist and romancer, and author of Daphnis and Chlo. Very little is known of his life, and it is assumed that he lived on the isle of Lesbos, the setting for Daphnis and Chloe, during the 2nd century AD. It has been suggested that the name Longus is merely a misinterpretation of the last word of Daphnis and Chloe's original title in the Florentine manuscript. If his name was really Longus, he was probably a freedman of some Roman family which bore that name as a cognomen. Benoit Audran, 1661 - 1721, was a French artist and engraver, from a family of French artists. Philippe Charles d'Orlans, petit-fils de France, Duke of Orlans, 1674 1723, was a member of the royal family of France and served as Regent of the Kingdom from 1715 to 1723. He was known from birth under the title of Duke of Chartres. Named regent of France for Louis XV until he attained his majority in February 1723, the era of his de facto rule was known as the Regency. His life was marked by a military, political and courtly career. He is referred to historically as le Rgent. The city of New Orleans, in Louisiana, U. S. , is named after him. Condition: The binding is tight and firm. The hinges are just starting but still firm. There is some mid wear to the extremities, including some mild bumping and rubbing. Internally the pages are clean and bright, with only the very occasional spot, most prominent in the first few pages. Overall the condition is very good indeed and totally unrestored..

Uppsala, J. H. Werner, 1718. 8:o. (2),70 s.

A Cruising Voyage Round the World:

London: Andrew Bell and Bernard Lintot, , 1718. First to the South-Sea, thence to the East-Indies, and Homewards by the Cape of Good Hope. Begun in 1708, and finish'd in 1771. Containing a Journal of all the Remarkable Transactions... An Account of Alexander Selkirk's living alone Four Years and Four Months in an Island... With Maps of all the Coast, from the best Spanish Manuscript Draughts. And an Introduction relating to the South-Sea Trade. By... Commander in Chief in this Expedition, with the Ships Duke and Dutchess of Bristol. Second Edition, Corrected. Octavo (196 × 118 mm). Contemporary sprinkled calf, red morocco label to the spine, bands, double rules to the compartments, double ruled panels to the boards, edges sprinkled red. Folding map frontispiece, map of the world in two hemispheres with track of the expedition and 4 other folding maps. A little rubbed, neatly rebacked with the original spine, restored, laid down, light browning, but overall a very good copy. First published in 1712, Woodes's journal was an immediate success and is widely considered to be "a buccaneering classic" (Hill). Born in Bristol around 1679, Rogers made an advantageous marriage in 1705, his wife being the daughter of Admiral Whetstone, commander in chief in the West Indies. This may well have stood him in good stead when he proposed to the merchants of Bristol a scheme to challenge the French and Spanish monopoly of trade in the South Sea. "Two merchant ships, the Duke and the Duchess, were fitted out. A number of noted officers were included, perhaps the most noteworthy being Captain William Dampier, master of the Duke and pilot of the expedition. The crew comprised an eclectic combination mainly of 'Tinkers, Taylors, Hay-makers, Pedlers, Fiddlers etc.' Rogers and his motley crew set sail aboard the Duke from King Road, near Bristol, on 2 August 1708" (ODNB). They met with early success when on their way to the Cape Verde Islands they captured a Spanish merchantman, and by December had reached Brazil. Rounding Cape Horn early in 1709 they reached the Juan Fernandez Islands where they encountered Alexander Selkirk ("a man cloth'd in goat-skins, who look'd wilder than the first owners of them") who had been willingly marooned there by Thomas Stradling, and who became the model for Robinson Crusoe. Off Peru they took another vessel, and another out of Lima, in which action Woodes's brother was killed. Despite the loss, the party successfully attacked Guayaquil, then headed for Gorgona, off Colombia, in order to recuperate from a fever which was rife amongst the crew. At the beginning of October the fleet was off Mexico near to the tip of Baja California and encountered and took the Manila galleon Nueva Señora de la Encarnacíon Desengano, "her hold crammed with riches" (Howgego). An attempt on the treasure ship's larger sister ship was repulsed, and in January 1710 the expedition set off westward across the Pacific. Their circumnavigation was completed via Guam, the Moluccas, Batavia and the Cape of Good Hope. Woodes's "epoch-making voyage" was completed on his return to the Thames in October 1711. "The total value of the captured treasure was estimated (then) at £800,000 and was divided among the crew according to shareholding determined prior to the voyage" (Howgego). News of this "well-organized and sympathetically commanded" expedition spread fast, "stimulated public interest, and, encouraged by his friends, Rogers agreed to publish his 'journal'" (ODNB).

Rent frisk eksemplar med brede marginer (ubeskåret !).Bound uncut in a very nice later half vellum binding w. gilt leather title-label. Old marbled paper over boards. Title-page printed in red and black. A small hole to the margin of final leaf, due to a weakness in the paper. A nice, clean copy with wide margins (uncut!). (2), 70 pp.. Originaludgaven. Scarce first edition of the first handbook of Swedish anatomy. The importance of the work also lies in its introduction of several anatomical terms to Swedish.Roberg was the teacher of Carl Linné, and he taught medicine at Uppsala University from 1697 until 1740. He also founded the Nosocomium academicum, the later Uppsala Academy Hospital. There are at least five variant-printings of the first edition. Our copy seems to be the first, which is very scarce. The variants are difficult to determine, but the pointers are to be found in the quotations in the recto and verso of the title-page. According to Gustav Rudbeck's essay in "Nordisk Tidsskrift för Bok-og Biblioteksväsen", the copies with quotation of Ruffus Ephesius on the title-page are among the first issues. Our copy has the following pointers: 1. Rufus-quotation on the title-page, 2. The verso of the title-page only has the large printer's device (stylized leaves, and the bird Phoenix hovering above a fire, lit up by the rays of the sun, with a band with the words "Qui aluit Spero reseminabit") and no quotations. 3. Without the later printed addition to the pages 15-16, but with the original "Tale" as catch.word. 4. The last leaf ends with a Phoenix bird printed in red. That the Rufus-printings belong among the first, is further backed by the fact that the word "Vederbörandes" is placed so high on the title-page that there is no distance between that and the line above it. The placing of this word seems to be corrected in later issues
