        POEMS ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS

London Printed for Jacob Tonson 1718 - The FIRST AND BEST OF THE RARE Tonson subscription folio editions, ONE OF A VERY SMALL NUMBER OF COPIES ONLY, of this sumptuous "Superfine" issue, with the watermark of a fleur-de-lys surmounting a shield, organized and published by Prior’s friends. The Strasburg bend watermark was used generally for the subscribers and normal copies were issued with the London arms watermark. Illustrated with superb engraved frontispiece, and large and finely engraved head, tail and initial pieces throughout. Folio, original full period speckled calf, red calf label gilt within raised bands of the spine separating the compartments which are elaborately decorated with finely tooled gilt panel work surrounding central gilt tooled floral pieces, all edges speckled. [42], 506 + [6] Contents at end. A very fine and very crisp copy of this exquisitely printed work. Entirely unsophisticated with some very minor expected age. VERY RARE in this state. An exquisitely printed work. The quality of the engraving work is absolutely superb and the setting of the type and choice of paper of the very highest quality. Having this book in one’s hands makes one reflect upon how wonderful a folio edition of Shakespeare might have been had Tonson ever undertaken the task. Matthew Prior was one of the most important English poets of the century, and a diplomat as well. To raise money after his release from house arrest during the shift of power in England, Tonson and Alexander Pope especially aided Prior in setting to type a subscriber's edition of his poems. The project was a great success with nearly 1500 names included among the original subscribers to the work. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Armorial bookplate of Rogers Ruding to FEP. Second and third volumes: Contemporary polished calf, ruled and decorated in blind and gilt, contrasting morocco lettering-pieces. Armorial bookplate of George Scott, Woolston Hall, Essex to each FEP. The set slightly worn, with some cracking to joints. However, this remains a handsome and strongly bound set, and internally crisp, fine and with generous margins. Occasional manuscript annotation to text, or on inserted slip. A matched set, each constituent part of which with an interesting provenance: the bookplate of Rogers Ruding to the first work is either that of the Leicestershire-born antiquary, (1751-1820), author of The Annals of the Coinage of Britain and its Dependencies, (London, 1817-9], or his father. The bookplates to each volume of the Stevens continuation are those of George Scott (1720-80), English antiquary, whose manuscript letter-books are now in the Bodleian. William Dugdale (1605-1688), English antiquary. A herald by trade, Dugdale's close bond to King Charles I ensured unrivalled noble connections and a first-hand experience of the English Civil War. The first collected history of English monasticism, Monasticon Anglicanum charts the growth of the major orders (including Benedictine, Cluniac, Cistercian, Carthusian, Gilbertian, Gregorian, Templar and Trinitarian) through the middle ages to systematic dissolution during the English Reformation. The first editions (London, 1655-73) were printed entirely in Latin, collecting the charters of monasteries, abbies, nunneries and major Cathedrals, along with the history of the control, administration and latterly the privileges devolving to secular proprietors of ecclesiastical lands. Composed during the Cromwellian interregnum, the publication of this work was encouraged by a defiant Protestant and Royalist establishment as eager to reclaim their temporal privileges as to preserve the history and identity of English Christianity. This first eighteenth-century edition was translated into English and abridged by John Stevens (c.1662-1726), antiquary, whose two volume supplement improves upon the original. Whilst Dugdale established the field of monastic history as worthwhile and the significance of charters as documentary evidence, it was the publication of the three volume Stevens edition which not only popularized the subject amongst a non-professional audience, but also deepened understanding by including mendicant orders the more recent histories of the minority of establishments which survived the Reformation. Wegmann, Schweizer Exlibris 3676ff.).

All maps and views finely coloured by a contemporary hand. Second and enlarged edition of the first atlas of the Dutch province of Friesland, including 30 detail maps of the entire provinces of Friesland, an overview map of Friesland and 8 historical maps of the Netherlands. The first edition was produced by Bernard Schotanus in 1698 after he received an order from the Gedeputeerde Staten for a new mapping out of the Grietenijen. This first edition was published in 125 copies only. The rapid topographical changes in Frisia and the small number of printed copies made a new edition necessary just 20 years later. After the death of Schotanus in 1704, Franc?ois Halma edited and published this 1718 edition in Leeuwarden. He revised the copperplates with information up to date and added the seven historical maps of the Netherlands from Menso Alting, plus a historical overview map of Frisia by Schotanus. The Halma atlas was later re-issued by R & J Ottens. (R. W. Shirley) Fockema Andreae mentioned in Geschiedenis der Kartografie van Nederland about this atlas: The execution of these maps is exceptionally beautiful... one of the best and most beautiful documents of our old cartography. The heraldic plates showing the arms of the province of Friesland, the arms of the fourteen Frisian districts and the arms of William Karel Hendrik Friso, Prince of Orange-Nassau. The splendid allegorical frontispiece, which is also new in this edition, was engraved by Jacob Folkema after a drawing by the artist Gerbrandus van der Haven and especially the poet Johannes Hilarides, who provides a detailed explanation in verse on the back of the title page. Provenance: Boekhandel W. Eekhoff, Leeuwarden, label on endpaper, 19th century All maps of this atlas are shown on my new Atlas Gallery website: Schotanus/Halma Friesland Atlas. - All plates brilliantly coloured by a contemporary hand.

Leyden, Johannes Muller, the widow of Cornelis Boutesteyn, and Samuel Luchtmans 1718. (gegraveerde titelpagina, 21) 302, (2) 134, (14) 164, (2) 66 folia. (engraved titlepage, 21) 302, (2) 134, (14) 164, (2) 66 folia. Contemporary blind-stamped Vellum with 6 raised bands, Folio H. 43 x L. 27 x W. 12 cm. (Beautiful Dutch States Bible, bright printing on very white paper, bound in a contemporary vellum binding, it is very rare to see a Bible from this time bound in complete vellum. The bottom of the spine is skillfully restored and the ribbons have been renewed. With the 6 folding maps by Cornelis Danckerts II. These 6 biblemaps were engraved around the year 1710 by Albert Schut, an engraver who worked from 1708 until 1713. The worldmap and the map of the travels of Paul are slightly modified atlas maps. On this last map you can even read Dutch place names, like Coeverden and Staveren or the Wadden island Schierman Ooge, these are names Paul most likely could have never heard of. The maps of the Paradise, the wanderings of Israel in the desert, and the Promised Land look a lot like the similar named maps by Nicolaes Visscher, although everything is much more moderate of design, most of the time without insertions and little angels, but more in the French style, which became popular in the eighteenth century. The map of Jerusalem, after the design by Villalpando, is strongly related to the similar map by the family Keur. For the printing of this Bible were used casted plates, on which were written the complete text of the to be printed Bible. Luchtmans was the only printer that ever used this system.) Poortman, W.C. Contemporary unlettered sheep, blind rules to boards, blind fillets along joints, faint early shelf label to head of spine. Faint offsetting to margins of endleaves, text notably fresh. A nice copy. * Only edition. This digest of statutes with explanatory glosses was the first book of its kind. Conceived for the layman, it was intended to be a pocket companion for the traveler and a useful addition to his reference shelf. The anonymous editor felt a need for this book because the British were a mobile people "whose Dominions and Factories lie dispersed in every Quarter of the habitable World, whose Traffick is unlimited, and extends to every Thing that either Earth or Seas produce" (v). Equally valuable to social historians, it is documents the difficulties and dangers of eighteenth-century travel.         A Cruising Voyage round the World: First to the South-Seas, thence to the East-Indies, and homewards by the Cape of Good Hope... The second edition, corrected

London: Andrew Bell, 1718. Octavo, with five folding maps including frontispiece; very good in contemporary panelled calf, joints neatly repaired and label renewed; extensive inscriptions to front endpapers and verso of title-page. Dampier, Selkirk and anti-submarine officers of the Great War. Fine second edition, corrected, of this "buccaneering classic" (Hill): the voyage was one of the most important of its kind, and is also significant for being an important insight into the later career of William Dampier, who was the pilot. The book recounts a cruising voyage from 1708-1711, raiding Spanish possessions on the Pacific coast of South America, including a famous attack on the Manila galleon. The book is perhaps best known for the detailed recounting of their rescue of Alexander Selkirk, whose life is described in detail, and which is thought to have been the inspiration for Defoe's {i Robinson Crusoe}. This attractive copy has an intriguing Royal Navy association as several pages, including the verso of the frontispiece map and the title-page, are covered with signatures of serving British naval officers in 1914 and 1915, including one name, that of the "Naval Secretary to the Admiral in Charge", which has been deleted by the censor. Evidently Rogers' book was carried on board several ships on active service against German submarines in the North Sea, and the signatures include those of Rear Admiral Richard Purefoy (flying his flag in the {i Assistance}), Vice Admiral Charles H. Dare, and Rear Admiral Reginald Tupper (who later joined the British fascists). The inscription relating to the submarine-hunter HMY {i Hersilia} is the fullest, reading: 'Lt. Commander and officers of HM Yacht {i Hersilia} north west of Scotland 1914. Mission to hunt submarines and their bases, suspicious ships and destroy mines' followed by the signature of Lieutenant-Commander F. Whitfield and three other officers. The {i Hersilia} was a hired yacht in Royal Naval service from September 1914 until it was wrecked in mid-1916 in the Hebrides.
