1717. Fine tight binding ...but without covers and slight foxing, spots as shown. The Mystical City of God is a book written in the 17th century by the Franciscan nun Venerable Mary of Jesus of Ágreda. Arguably, said by some theologians the most important book -- second only to the Bible -- ever to have been written. The Mystical City of God, revealed to Mother Mary of Jesus by Heaven itself, complements and completes the story of the life of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ but, in addition, provides the rich history of the entire life of His Most Blessed Mother. Through the study of Our Lady, we come to know Her, Her Son and the Blessed Trinity. According to María de Ágreda, the book was to a considerable extent dictated to her by the Blessed Virgin Mary and regarded the life of the Virgin Mary and the divine plan for creation and the salvation of souls. The work alternates between descriptions of the Trinity, the Virgin Mary's life, and the spiritual guidance she provides to the author, by whom her words were reproduced for the spiritual benefit and growth of the reader. The book describes at length the various virtues, and how the reader should live in order to see them reflected in their own life, with the Virgin Mary as their model for sanctity. The work has the Imprimatur of several Popes and Bishops and appeals primarily to those who believe in "private revelation" and the sanctity of Mary. Non-Catholic Christians generally do not accept the teaching of the Catholic Church and are consequently skeptical of works of this nature. Various misinterpretations of her writ … [Click Below for Full Description]

SCHENK, Pieter.
Amsterdam, 1717.Engraved map of Hungary, Transylvania, Slavonia, Bosnia, Croatia and Dalmatia, decorated in the upper right corner showing a battle scene of the Austrian troops and the Turkish troops. Ca. 51 x 57 cm.Map of Hungary after Comte Luigi Marsigli (1658-1730), an Italian military engineer who surveyed Hungary and the Danube 1696-99 after the peace agreement between Austria and the Ottoman Empire.Depicting the Christian territories in Europe under Ottoman rule. In 1687 the Christian allies regained Hungary and the south of the Peloponnese fell to the Venetians. These wars diverted the attention of the public to the European frontiers of the Ottoman Empire. Numerous maps were issued to illustrate the fighting between the Ottoman and the West. Commercial publishers in the Low Countries such as Johannes Danckerts (Amsterdam / ca. 1690) and Pieter Schenk (Amsterdam / ca. 1695) produced maps of south - east Europe in large format. They refer to the “Christian kingdom” of Hungary, Greece and the Peleponnese, and a ‘Cristianised' Apollo is the main feature of the decorative cartouche. The basic purpose of these maps was to provide the European public with cartographic images of the contemporary theatre of war. (Tolias 2011, p. 219 - 223).

SAINT-HILAIRE, Auguste de, Adrien de JUSSIEU and Jacques CAMBESSEDES.
Borba de Moraes, p. 762; Nissen, BBI 1717; Stafleu & Cowan 10032. Rare series on Brazilian botany with 70 beautiful lithographed plates, published in 14 instalments by the French explorer, botanist and entomologist Auguste de Saint-Hilaire (1779-1853). Beginning with part 9 his two co-authors are named on the wrapper as well. After a journey of six years through Brazil (1816-1822), he brought home to France a vast collection of plants, mammals, birds and reptiles. There he dedicated himself to the publication of the results of his Brazilian journeys by working on several publications at the same time. The long journey and the pressure of work took their toll, however, and Saint-Hilaire fell ill. He was able to continue his work but not alone. Two respected colleagues, Adrien de Jussieu and Jacques Cambessèdes took over the largest part of the work. De Saint-Hilaire recovered to some degree and together they continued their work. A note in part 9 assures the readers and subscribers that the style and quality will not suffer from this change. Saint-Hilaire intended to issue 50 parts, but only these 14 were actually printed. Each instalment contains 5 plates with accompanying text. Some text leaves in the last 3 parts foxed, a tear in the back wrapper of one part and a marginal worm hole in the front wrapper and first leaf of another. In very good condition, with the bolts opened at the head, but wholly untrimmed.

Jesuits. Letters from the Missions
Nicolas le Clerc., Paris, 1717. 8vo, (1), xxviii, 442,(4), pp, With printed device on frontispice, two folding map ( First map Mission des Moxes, second cours du fleuve Maragnon autremont dit Amazones) and five full pages engraved plate. Woodcut title vignette, ornaments & initials. First Edition; apparent later issue. The twelfth volume of the 34 volumes that appeared between 1702 and 1776. Sabin provides a good account of the publishing history of these highly important compilations of reports sent back by Jesuit missionaries around the world. They include vivid accounts of the inhabitants of America, Asia, and the South Seas particularly; and they are replete with lore on folkways, natural history, and the incidental discoveries of the far-flung and often imperilled missionaries. Writing of a later edition, Thomas W. Field enthuses, Every one of these volumes is crowded with interesting details for the history of the aborigines of the countries in which these wonderful men had their missions. This volume contains a long introductory account of the life and labors of Father Antoine Verjus, who had long led the Jesuit mission in China and who had recently died. There follow a brief report on two new missions in Peru and Chile and a long account of the progress of the mission in China. The latter narrative is illustrated with an important folding map of Nagasaki--Nangasaki appelle parles Chinois Tchangki--the Japanese trading port for Chinese and Dutch ships. The text includes a brief and exaggerated account of the xenophobic and anti-Christian policies of the Japanese.Boun … [Click Below for Full Description]

2). LUCREZIO CARO TITO
per Giovanni Pickard. Cm. 19,5, pp. (18) 400 (8). [Click Below for Full Description]
