PATERSON, William.]
London: printed for A. and W. Bell, and J. Watts; and sold by B. Barker and C. King [& 2 others in London], 1717. Octavo (197 x 122 mm). Contemporary speckled calf, rebacked to style in sheep preserving the original red morocco label, raised bands, double rule and scroll frame in gilt to boards, edges sprinkled red. Lacking the initial blank as with the BL, Kress, and Sraffa copies. Armorial bookplate of Ditton Park and shelf marks written in red ink to front pastedown. Extremities worn, boards a little chipped, endpapers browned from turn-ins and pasted to inner margins of title leaf and T2, contents tanned with occasional spotting, otherwise a very good copy. Woodcut head- and tailpieces. First edition, written by William Paterson (1658-1719), founder of the Bank of England and projector of the Darien scheme. In An Enquiry into the State of the Union, Paterson — using the fictional "Mr May" as his mouthpiece — considers the effects of the Anglo-Scottish union of 1707 on English trade and commerce, as well as the best means of paying off the national debt. His arguments and opinions are presented as a series of conversations held by the imaginary Wednesday Club, who supposedly gathered in Friday-street, Cheapside and conducted discussions on current financial affairs under Paterson's direction; though his biographer, Saxe Bannister, has expressed doubt over the veracity of the anecdote, it was historically believed that the Bank of England was created as the result of a Wednesday Club debate. A Scottish politician and banker himself, Paterson was a strong advocate of the u … [Click Below for Full Description]

Avila, Francisco de.
Por los herederos de la Viuda de Miguel de Ribera Calderon, 1717. Mexico saw a major rebirth of scholarly interest in Nahuatl during the first half of the 18th century, and Fr. Avila was a contributor to it. In his introduction here ("Al pio lector"), he explains why, despite the existence of the works of Molina, Carochi, Ribera, and Manuel Perez (whose enthusiastic endorsement ["Sentir"] is part of the preliminaries), he has decided to write and publish this grammar: "solo quitar algunas dificultades, que he reconosido [sic] en los que aprenden por el discurso de veinte anos."The work achieves this aim well. Moreover, Fr. Avila's extremely notable introduction has much to say about the physical and spiritual condition of the Indians at the beginning of 18th century and about the economic and social debt of the Spanish population to them. Sra. Leon-Portilla points out that among the "chats" (i.e, "platicas") that form the appendix, "las destinadas a lograr una buena confesion" are of => "gran importancia." This copy => escaped the Inquisition censors who after its publication insisted that the section on folio 34r-v, "Instruccion para ensenar lo que se resive [sic] en la Hostia" be lined through. Evidence of Readership? Or, frugal management of paper? Or, something else entirely?? A singular quality of this among all the copies that we have ever seen is the presence of => two additional leaves (four pages) at the end containing => 18th-century manuscript notes in Nahuatl for a sermon on the theme of "they who acquired divine happiness" and on conducting a confession … [Click Below for Full Description]

- Firenze, Nella Stamperia S.A.R. Per Gio: Gaetano, e Sant Franchi, 1717. 4to. Contemporary full vellum with handwritten title to spine. Among the dozens of biographies in the present work, we have the first printing of Viviani's seminal biography of Galilei, the first, and by far the most important biography of the great astronomer ever written. It is from this biography that we have most of the canonical stories and anecdotes about Galilei that keep being repeated and quoted - e.g. the legend of Galilei demonstrating to his students that Aristotle was wrong about speed of fall being related to the weight of an object by dropping balls of different mass off the leaning tower in Pisa; the stories of how he came up with the idea of the pendulum after having watched a suspended lamp swing back and forth in the cathedral of Pisa when he was still a student there - and furthermore also how his first experiments with pendulums were carried out (by his son due to his own failing eyesight), etc., etc.Vincenzo Viviani (1622-1703) considered himself Galilei's last pupil and he sp … [Click Below for Full Description]

Murray, Andreas / Speck, Georg Philipp (resp.).
1717. 4to. (2), 40 pp.; interleaved with 21 ff., containing contemporary handwritten notes throughout. Contemporary red brove-varnish paper wrappers. First edition of Murray' master disputation: the author's interleaved personal copy with his extensive autograph revisions for the second, significantly expanded edition which would be published by Bohn in Hamburg in 1718 (an octavo volume of 136 pages). The thesis discusses the Kenites, a nomadic clan in the ancient Levant, whose lands God promised to the descendants of Abraham: "On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates: the Kenites, and the Kenizzites, and the Kadmonites" (Gen 15:18-19). "Their origin is not known: some locate it in Arabia, others in the Philistine states or in Judah" (cf. Zedler XV, 452). The Kenites' possible origin from the Arabian Peninsula (Arabia Felix) is discussed on p. 24 in particular (with numerous corrections and amendments in the margin and additional notes on the "Sinus Arabicus" and the "mare rubrum" on the following interleaf). Rare in all editions: no copy in trade records internationally. - Murray (1695-1771), of Scottish descent, was born in Memel in East Prussia. After gaining his Master's degree with the present work, he travelled to Hamburg and then, with his expanded book-length thesis to recommend him, on to England. After his return to the continent in 1719 he lectured in Kiel before embarking on a career as a preacher in Holstein, Stockholm, and Uppsala (cf. Jöcher … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pope, Alexander
London: W. Bowyer, for Jacob Tonson at Shakespeare's Head in the Strand, and Bernard Lintot between the Temple-Gates in Fleetstreet, 1717. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Very Good hardcover first edition. No DJ (ha, ha). This is the quarto version (alphabetical letters appear at the bottom of every 4th page as a guide to the bookbinder), 11.75" x 7.75", of Alexander Pope's iconic masterpiece of marketing and poetic achievement. You may see this volume bundled (even in upscale auction houses such as Bauman's) as volume one of four volumes, but that is an anachronism! Pope gambled on an audacious move in 1717 by publishing his "Collected Works" at the raw young age of 29. He was already a significant force in the English literary world, but, just as today, only venerated masters at the ends of their careers published "Collected Works." Pope broke that mold in 1717, but there was no volume 2 or 3 or 4 because he had written nothing else at that point! Nothing! It was a marketing ploy that worked beautifully for him. He was regarded from that year onward as an author with classic status. Several new works were published here for the first time, including "Eloisa to Abelard," and "Elegy to the Memory of an Unfortunate Lady." Truly a landmark volume in the history of literature and publishing. Folding frontis, [32], 408 pp. Early calf boards, rebacked, boards with wear and chipping to corners and edges. Frontis with long closed tear and one old repair to verso, 19th c. ownership signatures and dates to title page and front end … [Click Below for Full Description]

(BIBLE IN ENGLISH)
First edition of the enormous Baskett Bible, a "magnificent edition, printed in large type" (DMH) and "one of the most beautiful Bibles ever produced" (Campbell, Bible: The Story of the King James Version). "Only Baskerville's Bible (Cambridge, 1763) is its equal among English Bibles for beauty of type, impression, and paper, and the richness of its decoration gives the Vinegar Bible a unique distinction" (Carter, The History of the Oxford University Press). This is the first and greatest Bible printed by John Baskett, the leading publisher of English Bibles in the first half of the 18th century. From 1710 to 1743 Baskett had a monopoly on Bible publishing in England and Scotland. Baskett's patron Arthur Charlett described the "proposed splendour" of this work: "We are here printing a most Magnificent English Bible, some very few Copys will be in Vellum for a Present to the Queen & my Ld Treasurer. You know Dr Wallis and Dr Gregory pronounced Mr Dennison absolutely the best Corrector they ever met with. If this Work have not the Advantage of his nice Ey at least in giving the first Directions, and settling the Distances of Lines & Words and the great Art in a beautiful and Uniforme Division of Syllables, with several other minute Regulations, invisible to vulgar Eys, the Work will want of its proposed Splendour . . .
