LUCREZIO CARO TITO
per Giovanni Pickard. Cm. 19,5, pp. (18) 400 (8). Cfr. Very good condition with only very minor signs of external wear. Excellent paper quality. From the reference library of Hans Christian Andersen - Translator Erik Haugaard. With his Exlibris to the pastedown. Robert South (4 September 1634 – 8 July 1716) was an English churchman who was known for his combative preaching and his Latin poetry. He was the son of Robert South, a London merchant, and Elizabeth Berry. He was born at Hackney, Middlesex, and was educated at Westminster School under Richard Busby, and at Christ Church, Oxford, matriculating on 11 December 1651. Among his college exercises was a panegyric on Oliver Cromwell in Latin verse on the conclusion of peace at the end of the First Anglo-Dutch War (5 April 1654). He commenced B.A. on 24 February 1654–5. On account of his using the Book of Common Prayer John Owen, then Dean of Christ Church and vice-chancellor, unsuccessfully opposed his proceeding M.A. on 12 June 1657. South travelled on the continent, and in 1658 privately received episcopal ordination, perhaps from Thomas Sydserf. He was incorporated M.A. at Cambridge in 1659. MICHAELIS, Johann David.
A. Lifschitz, Language and enlightenment, pp. 109-118; STCN 186380593 (part 1-2), 151444323 (part 3-6), 15144482X (part 7). Complete set of the Dutch translation of an extensive work on Hebrew law and legislation, by the German theologian Johann David Michaelis (1717-1791). "In its six volumes Michaelis discussed Jewish public, private, international, and criminal law; analysed social norms (such as polygamy and revenge in the name of family honour); reviewed environmental and zoological phenomena; and observed agricultural and economic practices, from horse- and sheep breeding to international commerce. This work was not merely intended for philologists, orientalists, and theologians. Michaelis addressed it specifically to statesmen and civil servants interested in the evolution of legal systems" (Lifschitz). The Byvoegsels contain a section wholly devoted to Arabian (race)horses and stud farms. Michaelis deals with Arabic breeds, the mixing of these breeds with English horses, the origin of horses (which according to Michaelis is very likely to be Arabia), many Biblical passages which mention horses, and some early writers who wrote about Arabian horses. With some (water) stains. Bindings rubbed along the extremities, slightly damaged at the top and bottom of spine, hinges partly cracked. Otherwise in good condition.

London: Engraven and Printed by the Permission of Mr Baskett, Printer to the King's most Excellent Majesty. Sold by John Stu, 1717. London: Engraven and Printed by the Permission of Mr Baskett, Printer to the King's most Excellent Majesty. Sold by John Sturt, Engraver, 1717. 8vo., pp.xxii, 166, [ii]. Silverplate engraving throughout, with ornate borders, initials and decorations, and copious illustrations. Volvelle to p.v, single-page publisher's list to rear. Faint toning, volvelle repaired at point of attachment but functional. Recent brown morocco, raised bands, gilt spine with title, a.e.g., very good. 'The effect is harsh and dazzling in the extreme, and surely none but the most enthusiastic devotee ever yet prayed to heaven from the text of Sturt's prayer-book.' (Dibdin, Bibliographical Decameron p.116) Generally considered the most spectacular of Sturt's productions, the entire text is engraved rather than typeset, and is lavishly ornamented. Sturt (1658–1730) specialised in miniature work and was renowned for having engraved the Lord's Prayer in the space of a silver halfpenny and the Creed within that of a penny. Here his frontispiece portrait of King George I showcases this skill, being composed of the Creed, the Lord's Prayer, the Ten Commandments, a prayer for the royal family, and Psalm 21, all inscribed in lines of tiny characters across the King's profile. The overall effect disquiets Dibdin to a degree this cataloguer cannot recall seeing before, as he describes the miniscule text 'running horizontally and directly across the physiognomy of his Majesty. Contemporary full calf with giltstamped label to gilt spine. All edges sprinkled. First editions of all three parts (each with separate title page). One of the most important works on poor relief in Italy, reprinted as late as 1844. Curiously, although Guevarre wrote in French, the French original was not published until 1722. An English edition appeared in 1726 as "Ways and means for suppressing beggary and relieving the poor, by erecting general hospitals, and charitable corporations". The book proposes to end poverty and begging by the establishment of public charitable institutions, discussing where such facilities should be established, their internal administration, their policy regarding the admission of the poor and disabled, the conduct of labour, the provision of food and clothes, etc. The first part treats the necessity of an institution for the prevention of destitution administered by public authorities and the secular principles on which it should be based; the second part treats the objections that can be levelled against the public m … [Click Below for Full Description]

PATERSON, William.]
London: printed for A. and W. Bell, and J. Watts; and sold by B. Barker and C. King [& 2 others in London], 1717. Octavo (192 x 115 mm). Contemporary calf, library mark at foot of unlettered spine with raised bands. Ownership inscription and shelf mark to pastedown. Calf rubbed, joints splitting but firm, extremities worn, front free endpaper loosening, pages toned with some light foxing, a few pages lightly creased. A very good copy. First edition, written by William Paterson (1658-1719), founder of the Bank of England and projector of the Darien scheme. In An Enquiry into the State of the Union, Paterson - using the fictional "Mr May" as his mouthpiece - considers the effects of the Anglo-Scottish union of 1707 on English trade and commerce, as well as the best means of paying off the national debt. His arguments and opinions are presented as a series of conversations held by the imaginary Wednesday Club, who supposedly gathered in Friday-street, Cheapside and conducted discussions on current financial affairs under Paterson's direction; though his biographer, Saxe Bannister, has expressed doubt over the veracity of the anecdote, it was historically believed that the Bank of England was created as the result of a Wednesday Club debate. A Scottish politician and banker himself, Paterson was a strong advocate of the union with England and played an important part in the arrangement of the public accounts in the Treaty. He was employed in London and Edinburgh as part of the "team that calculated the compensatory 'equivalent' for Scotland upon being subject to English customs … [Click Below for Full Description]
