Lotter C.T., 1717-1777
Lotter C.T., 1717-1777. [Click Below for Full Description]

Voyage To The South Sea And Along The Coasts Of Chili And Peru was printed in 1717. The Hardcover book is Ex-Library with the extent of the Ex Library markings depicted on photo #3. The Hardcover book has some visible shelf wear on it. The pages are in great shape with no tears or stains. The countless hand-colored color plates, maps, and foldout maps inside show absolutely no signs of sun damage or discoloration. The book describes the adventurous journey of a group including Monfieur Frezier, The Engineer In Ordinary To The King Of France, and their explorations from France all the way to the coasts of Chili and Peru during the early 1700s. Their scholarly studies included making maps of the area, customs and manners of the Native people, the natural history of the area, locations of mines and commodities, the politics of the area, and so much more! Great book for any antique book collection! Great read! What you see is what you get. If you have any questions feel free to ask me anything about the book.

Lotter C.T., 1717-1777
Lotter C.T., 1717-1777. Carribean/Florida/America, anno 1760, Lotter T.C. "Mappa Geographica Regionem Mexicanam et Floridam. Terrasque adjacentes, ut et Anteriores Americae Insulas, Cursius itidem et Reditus Navigantium versus flumen Missispi et alias Colonias" Tobiae Conradi Lotteri Geographi. This is Lotters decorative and beautifully engraved version of Delisle's important map of 1703 (Carte du Mexique et de la Floride). It provides a view of North America from the Great Lakes through the West Indies. The British colonies are confined east of the Appalachian Mountains, France controls the Mississippi valley and Florida, and Spain possesses Mexico political divisions as dictated by the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. New Mexico is finely described with many native tribes and pueblos noted, including Acoma, Santa Clara, Isleta and more. While geographically nearly identical to Delisle's chart, this map is very ornate with the lower left corner filled with a huge sea battle and the Atlantic filled with four inset plans of Panama, Havana, Cartagena and Vera Cruz. Size of the leaf: 53x65 cm., contemporary colours, only little brownish, some small restored tears on upper margin.

Ca. 51 x 57 cm.Map of Hungary after Comte Luigi Marsigli (1658-1730), an Italian military engineer who surveyed Hungary and the Danube 1696-99 after the peace agreement between Austria and the Ottoman Empire.Depicting the Christian territories in Europe under Ottoman rule. In 1687 the Christian allies regained Hungary and the south of the Peloponnese fell to the Venetians. These wars diverted the attention of the public to the European frontiers of the Ottoman Empire. Numerous maps were issued to illustrate the fighting between the Ottoman and the West. Commercial publishers in the Low Countries such as Johannes Danckerts (Amsterdam / ca. 1690) and Pieter Schenk (Amsterdam / ca. 1695) produced maps of south - east Europe in large format. They refer to the “Christian kingdom” of Hungary, Greece and the Peleponnese, and a ‘Cristianised' Apollo is the main feature of the decorative cartouche. The basic purpose of these maps was to provide the European public with cartographic images of the contemporary theatre of war. (Tolias 2011, p. 219 - 223).

SESSA (Joseph).
Augustae Taurinorum, typis Joannis Francisci Mairesse et Joannis Radix, 1717. in-folio. 10ff. 387pp. "Everything was done to separate them from their fellow-men, to mark them out as the objects of undying hatred, and to stifle all compassion for their sufferings. They were compelled to wear a peculiar dress, and to live in a separate quarter. A Christian might not enter into any partnership with them; he might not eat with them; he might not use the same bath; he might not employ them as physicians; he might not even purchase their drugs. For a long list of these prohibitions see a curious book, De Judæis (Turin, 1717), by Joseph Sessa (one of the judges appointed in Piedmont to regulate the affairs of the Jews)" (Lecky). Une section est imprimée en italien (pp. 271-302). Titre imprimé en rouge et noir. Très bon exemplaire. Cf. A Lover of Old England [Daniel Defoe]
Printed for J. Morphew near Stationers-Hall, 1717. Original Sewn Wrappers. First Edition. One of Defoe's infamous pamphlets, published under his second period of employment by the British government as a literary fifth columnist. Defoe would publish political or current event pamphlets, either anonymously or posing as a Whig, Tory, Jacobite, whom he said "my very soul abhors" (DNB 738), or even a repentant double agent, all while writing revolutionary works that lacked their bite, incendiary news which proved incorrect, or polemical pieces with unsound arguments. In short, he worked a a pamphleteering agent of chaos, all in the service of the government, pacifying their erstwhile opponents. Defoe was seen as a renegade, traitor, and spy by a number of his contemporaries: "the little art he is truly a master of, of forging a story and imposing it on the world." (DNB 737). Mercurius Politicus was published in the years shortly before his fantastical Robinson Crusoe. The periodical ran from May 1716 to December 1720. This being the April, 1717 issue. With "An Account of the Spaniards taking Twelve English Ships in the Bay of Campechy [sic], never printed before," as well as new appointments for the Bank and the East-India Company, and updates on the Jacobite situation in Scotland. Sewn pamphlet, lacking original paper wrappers. 211-273 pp. An ex-library copy, with a punch-stamp, dampstain, and writing on the title page, not affecting the text; library stamp on the verso of the title page.
