MARIOTTE, [Edmé].
FIRST COLLECTED EDITION, containing all of Mariotte's published works. Among the most important works in these volumes are his treatise on percussion, the nature of air ("Mariotte's Law"), radiant heat, colours, hydromechanics ("Marriote's flask"), vegetation, and his observations on vision. They also contain his previously unpublished Traité du mouvement des pendules, which Huygens possessed in manuscript and gave to the University of Leyden. The introduction contains valuable information on the bibliography of Mariotte, who is credited with introducing experimental physics into France. The first owner of this copy, William Hillary (1697-1763), probably bought it new in Leiden, where he obtained his MD in 1722. He practised in Ripon until 1734 when he moved to Bath, where he had his bookplate engraved.Roberts & Trent, Bibliotheca Mechanica, pp. 217-218.

[Click Below for Full Description]

Fine tight binding ...but without covers and slight foxing, spots as shown. The Mystical City of God is a book written in the 17th century by the Franciscan nun Venerable Mary of Jesus of Ágreda. Arguably, said by some theologians the most important book -- second only to the Bible -- ever to have been written. The Mystical City of God, revealed to Mother Mary of Jesus by Heaven itself, complements and completes the story of the life of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ but, in addition, provides the rich history of the entire life of His Most Blessed Mother. Through the study of Our Lady, we come to know Her, Her Son and the Blessed Trinity. According to María de Ágreda, the book was to a considerable extent dictated to her by the Blessed Virgin Mary and regarded the life of the Virgin Mary and the divine plan for creation and the salvation of souls. The work alternates between descriptions of the Trinity, the Virgin Mary's life, and the spiritual guidance she provides to the author, by whom her words were reproduced for the spiritual benefit and growth of the reader. The book describes at length the various virtues, and how the reader should live in order to see them reflected in their own life, with the Virgin Mary as their model for sanctity. The work has the Imprimatur of several Popes and Bishops and appeals primarily to those who believe in "private revelation" and the sanctity of Mary. Non-Catholic Christians generally do not accept the teaching of the Catholic Church and are consequently skeptical of works of this nature. Various misinterpretations of her writ … [Click Below for Full Description]

In 1687 the Christian allies regained Hungary and the south of the Peloponnese fell to the Venetians. These wars diverted the attention of the public to the European frontiers of the Ottoman Empire. Numerous maps were issued to illustrate the fighting between the Ottoman and the West. Commercial publishers in the Low Countries such as Johannes Danckerts (Amsterdam / ca. 1690) and Pieter Schenk (Amsterdam / ca. 1695) produced maps of south - east Europe in large format. They refer to the “Christian kingdom” of Hungary, Greece and the Peleponnese, and a ‘Cristianised' Apollo is the main feature of the decorative cartouche. The basic purpose of these maps was to provide the European public with cartographic images of the contemporary theatre of war. (Tolias 2011, p. 219 - 223).

SAINT-HILAIRE, Auguste de, Adrien de JUSSIEU and Jacques CAMBESSEDES.
Borba de Moraes, p. 762; Nissen, BBI 1717; Stafleu & Cowan 10032. Rare series on Brazilian botany with 70 beautiful lithographed plates, published in 14 instalments by the French explorer, botanist and entomologist Auguste de Saint-Hilaire (1779-1853). Beginning with part 9 his two co-authors are named on the wrapper as well. After a journey of six years through Brazil (1816-1822), he brought home to France a vast collection of plants, mammals, birds and reptiles. There he dedicated himself to the publication of the results of his Brazilian journeys by working on several publications at the same time. The long journey and the pressure of work took their toll, however, and Saint-Hilaire fell ill. He was able to continue his work but not alone. Two respected colleagues, Adrien de Jussieu and Jacques Cambessèdes took over the largest part of the work. De Saint-Hilaire recovered to some degree and together they continued their work. A note in part 9 assures the readers and subscribers that the style and quality will not suffer from this change. Saint-Hilaire intended to issue 50 parts, but only these 14 were actually printed. Each instalment contains 5 plates with accompanying text. Some text leaves in the last 3 parts foxed, a tear in the back wrapper of one part and a marginal worm hole in the front wrapper and first leaf of another. In very good condition, with the bolts opened at the head, but wholly untrimmed.

This is the second "rare edition to be preferred to the first" (Mira I, 115) of an important work on the ancient Greek colony of Syracuse on the east coast of Sicily. The work was first published in Messina and in this second edition has been expanded by the writings and information taken from Fazello, Arezzo, Cluverio and Gualtieri.
