[AUCTION POSTER - COUNTRY ESTATE].
Only survived (?) copy of an auction poster announcing the sale of the country estate Wulperhorst, originally dating from the 17th century. In the last half of the 18th century the estate came into the possession of lieutenant-stadtholder Willem Nicolaas Pesters (1717-1794) and after his death it fell to his wife Isabella van Westrenen (1728-1809). It was auctioned in 1801 and subsequently owned by Jan Anthony Taets van Amerongen heer van Woudenberg (1769-1828), after his death it was auctioned again in 1829. The new owner, Jan Elias Huydecoper, had it demolished, but decided in 1829 to build a new country house, which still exists today. With some folds and contemporary annotations relating to the sale. Pike, Joseph
Cork (Ireland), 1717. 6¼" x 4", 24 pages on 12 leaves, the first leaf loose, the early leaves with slight chipping, and with many blank leaves at the back. Hand written copy of a letter of faith and religious encouragement written by Quaker Joseph Pike to Joseph Gurney, Quaker minister. Joseph Pike was the eldest son of an English father and an Irish mother. His father had served in Cromwell's army in Ireland with distinction, but both parents later took the Quaker faith. From agrarian family beginnings Joseph began in business at age 18 as a wool trader and later as a dry goods merchant, opening a shop in Cork. In the course of his business that took him to Holland and Flanders, he gained friendly relations with William Penn. He was a strong supporter of Quaker teachings, writing and publishing tracts. This and a friendship with a Thomas Story, another friend of Penn, led to Story becoming Pike's agent in Pennsylvania. In 1682, William Penn petitioned King Charles II to make payment in land for a debt owed by the Crown to his father, an Admiral in the British Navy. He saw the land west of the Delaware as an opportunity for his "Holy Experiment" ? a Quaker colony, first called the Society of Friends of West New Jersey, a realization of his ideal to enable Quaker households to practice their discipline of familial and spiritual communities in an agrarian society. Pike's Land was the first name given to the grant of 10,000 acres to Joseph Pike, in 1705. With the death of Joseph Pike in 1729, having never set foot in Pennsylvania, his eldest son Richard became owner of Pike's … [Click Below for Full Description]

London, England: John Sturt. John Baskett, 1717. In near fine condition with only a few minor issues commensurate with vintage including two smudges on page I and II and an inked and pencil inscription on the front end page. There are no other markings, folds, creases or missing pages. Tight binding. Please see images and condition description. A scarce hardcover of 'The Book Of Common Prayer And Administration Of The Sacraments And Other Rites And Ceremonies Of The Church According To The Use Of The Church Of England', 1717. 1st ed. engraved by John Sturt and printed by John Baskett. Whether your a collector or reader it is difficult to dispute that this is one of the most talked-about sacred books that has ever been produced not only because of the fact that it took 188 silver plates which include over 100 illustrations depicting scenes from the New Testament, but also because of the portraits within it of Queen Elizabeth I, James I, Charles I and many others. There is also a section on the Gun Powder Plot, how remarkable is that? This really is the crème de la crème of bibles and to be fair, even as a booklover who has spend a substantial amount of time around libraries/bookshops/book fairs, I never understood how exceptional this edition really is until I owned it and now, I am finally ready to let it travel and be savoured by a new owner. Is that you? So, why is this book so unique? Firstly, it has the most incredible frontispiece I have encountered to date which within the portrait of King George I is The lord's prayer, The 10 Commandments, Psalm 21, A prayer for the … [Click Below for Full Description]

De Fer, Nicolas
THIS MAP IS IN FLORIDA.

[Click Below for Full Description]

Augustae Taurinorum, typis Joannis Francisci Mairesse et Joannis Radix, 1717. in-folio. 10ff. 387pp. "Everything was done to separate them from their fellow-men, to mark them out as the objects of undying hatred, and to stifle all compassion for their sufferings. They were compelled to wear a peculiar dress, and to live in a separate quarter. A Christian might not enter into any partnership with them; he might not eat with them; he might not use the same bath; he might not employ them as physicians; he might not even purchase their drugs. For a long list of these prohibitions see a curious book, De Judæis (Turin, 1717), by Joseph Sessa (one of the judges appointed in Piedmont to regulate the affairs of the Jews)" (Lecky). Une section est imprimée en italien (pp. 271-302). Titre imprimé en rouge et noir. Très bon exemplaire. Cf. Restoration to joints, spine ends, and tips, but not constituting a complete reback or major structural work. A few instances of misbinding: sigs. H-I of item number xii (see below) bound after item iv; sig. D of item viii bound after item xii; sig. A2 of item v bound after item viii. Some earlier pencilled collation notes. Light wear to extremities, slight rubbing to joints, front and rear free endpapers loosening at head and foot, a few leaves with light soiling and faint foxing but contents generally clean and crisp, folding tables without tears, in a few instances cut close, with minor loss to text, light damp staining at fore edges of final few leaves. Overall in very desirable condition. An exceptional collection of South Sea material, comprising 20 works on the Company collected and bound in the immediate decades following the burst of the Bubble. Of these twenty items, fourteen are by Archibald Hutcheson, the great Cassandra of the project who foretold its doom, and include both his pamphlets warning of the financial irregularities before the bubble burst, and his post-crash analyses of the company. Hutcheson's researches give a valuable overview of the spectacular rise and fall of the Company stock; indeed, his "meticulous, even pedantic, approach is reflected in calculations involving up to ten decimal places" (Dale, p. 124). The remaining six items include Company and parliamentary reports, a reply t … [Click Below for Full Description]

Folio. xliv, 278, [2], 276, [24] pp. Engraved frontispiece of St. Cyprian by Gerard Vandergucht ["I will that Thascius Cyprian be Beheaded"], woodcut head and tailpieces & initial letters; frontispiece and title-page loose, faint staining to margins not affecting text throughout. Contemporary blind-stamped calf, neatly rebacked to match, gilt-stamped red leather spine label, 6 raised bands. Title-page ownership signature of B. Cassano; Theological Institute of Connecticut blind-stamps to first and last few pages. SCARCE. Very good. Very scarce. FIRST EDITION of Marshall's translation of St. Cyprian, along with his own dissertation and a biography of Cyprian by Pontius of Carthage. As noted in the title, Marshall translated John Fell's Opera Omnia of Cyprian (Oxford, 1682), which is generally considered to be among the "best editions of Cyprian's works" (McClintock & Strong, p. 626). "This is the only translation of the whole genuine works of Cyprian, and in the main faithful; but the author sometimes makes the translation serve a purpose remote enough from the mind of the original" (Clarke, p. 206). In Clarke's opinion, Marshall cannot resist presenting Cyprian's words through the lens of the Church of England, considering his thinking to be in support of Marshall's own cessationist high church views. "The writings of Cyprian are numerous and valuable, as containing much curious and important information concerning the doctrines and discipl … [Click Below for Full Description]

Modern brown morocco, gilt lettered, lightly rubbed, ex-library, the title slightly marked, else quite a good copy with the advertising leaves Zouche's famed work relying in significant part on Grotius [2.18.8], arising out of the murder conviction of an ambassador's brother (by the Royal Commission on which Zouche had served), diplomatic immunity's "first adequate and logical examination" [Attributes: Hard Cover]
