Amadee Francois Frezier
London: Jonah Bowyer, 1717 A good copy of the first English edition (published one year after the French 1st publication) with 37 fine engraved plates, maps and charts as called for. Frezier was a French royal military engineer, and was asked to undertake a voyage to Spanish possessions in South America to study fortifications and to chart the western coast. The first section covers his voyage from France round Cape Horn and the second gives detail of his voyage along the coast of Chile and Peru. His observations were valuable and he gives interesting accounts of local people and customs. Of interest now (particularly for those with golfing and strawberry eating interests) are his depictions of a sport that looks like golf and his discovery of strawberries which he introduced to France. Frezier made some geographical errors which Halley (of comet fame) corrects in this edition. In contemporary panelled calf which has been expertly rebacked to provide a newer spine with raised bands and title label. Some remaining gilt decoration to board edges. With frontispiece map (relaid); title page in red and black inks with small signature to top; dedication 1p; Preface to the Reader 8pp; Letter to Mr Bowyer re the English printing by Edmund Halley asking leave to add a postscript 1p; directions to the binder 1p; text - with decorative head and tailpieces and decorative initial capitals - including 24 maps, charts and profiles - 17 folding - and 13 plates - 1 folding, and some musical notation pp 1-319; Postscript by Edmund Halley pp 320-322; Some Account of the Settlement of the Jesu … [Click Below for Full Description]

Sturt (1658-1730) engraved most of the works of English writing-master, John Ayres, and contributed engravings to a number of religious or illustrated publications of his time. The advert leaf enumerates several of them, including the 1721 edition of THE ORTHODOX COMMUNICANT - suggesting that the advert leaf was revised as copies were bound and sold in … [Click Below for Full Description]

Avila, Francisco de.
Mexico: Por los herederos de la Viuda de Miguel de Ribera Calderon, 1717. 12mo. [13], 36, [1] ff. Mexico saw a major rebirth of scholarly interest in Nahuatl during the first half of the 18th century, and Fr. Avila was a contributor to it. In his introduction here ("Al pio lector"), he explains why, despite the existence of the works of Molina, Carochi, Ribera, and Manuel Perez (whose enthusiastic endorsement ["Sentir"] is part of the preliminaries), he has decided to write and publish this grammar: "solo quitar algunas dificultades, que he reconosido [sic] en los que aprenden por el discurso de veinte anos." The work achieves this aim well. Moreover, Fr. Avila's extremely notable introduction has much to say about the physical and spiritual condition of the Indians at the beginning of 18th century and about the economic and social debt of the Spanish population to them. Sra. Leon-Portilla points out that among the "chats" (i.e, "platicas") that form the appendix, "las destinadas a lograr una buena confesion" are of => "gran importancia." This copy => escaped the Inquisition censors who after its publication insisted that the section on folio 34r-v, "Instruccion para ensenar lo que se resive [sic] en la Hostia" be lined through. Evidence of Readership? Or, frugal management of paper? Or, something else entirely?? A singular quality of this among all the copies that we have ever seen is the presence of => two additional leaves (four pages) at the end containing => 18th-century manuscript notes in Nahuatl for a sermon on the theme of "they who acquired divine happiness" … [Click Below for Full Description]

(Collins, Anthony):
London, Printed for R. Robinson, 1717.. 8vo. (1) leaf (title), vi p. (Preface), (2) p. (Contents), 118 p. Contemporary red full morocco, gilt borders, gilt edges of covers, corners bumped, faded richly gilt spine, all edges gilt. Minor foxing. Old catalogue cutting pasted on first endpaper. The first edition was also published in 1717. Anthony Collins (1676-1719), deist, freethinker, follower and friend of Locke. The book is said to be a "powerful statement of the doctrine of necessitarianism" (Enc. of Philos. II, 144). And "is his last strictly philosophical work, in which he unites the psychic determinism of Locke with the metaphysical determinism of Hobbes and Spinoza. The work was widely praised by Voltaire, Priestley (who reprinted it in 1790) and the French materialists" (Dict. of 18th c British Philosophers). See also Israel, Radical Enlightenment, p. 614ff.: "Collins was a philosophical necessitarian and radical Bible critic who firmly believed great benefits would accrue to society from the new freedom to philosophize ... But was all this freedom and intellecual progress worth the disillusionment and disruption?".

DEFOE, Daniel
London: J. Brotherton and W. Meddows,, 1717. Or, some considerations on the unreasonableness of refusing to receive back money lent on publick securities. And the necessity of setting the nation free from the insupportable burthen of debt and taxes. Octavo (185 × 108 mm), pp. [8], 79. Rebound in quarter calf and marbled boards, spine ruled in compartments, red morocco label to front board. Paper flaw to ten leaves where the top of the leaf was apparently caught in the press, with a vertical tear between 10 and 25 mm in length affecting one or two characters on between one and three lines, sense fully recoverable. A good copy, scarce in commerce. First edition, in which Defoe defended Walpole's Sinking Fund, which he said was regarded by the "landed men and gentlemen throughout the whole island" as "a healing, advantagious proposal" while the "moneyed men, and stock-jobbers, chiefly in the city of London" opposed it. (Defoe, The Conduct of Robert Walpole, pp. 49-52, 57, 59). Defoe demonstrated "that Walpole's scheme was no more than a means of doing justice to creditors who had loaned money to the government at lower interest rates than were now legal. Defoe claimed for himself the credit of having stopped the objections that had been made to the Sinking Fund" (Sill).

Lancisi, Giovanni Maria

Kupferstichtafel, im Halbpergamenteinband der Zeit; minimal fleckig; feines Exemplar.. FIRST EDITION. "Lancisi suggested that since malaria disappears after drainage it was due to some sort of poison emanating from marshes and possibly transmitted by mosquitoes. He planned a drainage scheme for marshy regions" G&M - - "By early seventeenth century, Italian physician Giovanni Maria Lancisi (1654-1720) made some astounding observations on malaria. In 1716, he first described a characteristic black pigmentation of the brain and spleen in the victims of malaria. Lancisi linked malaria with poisonous vapours of swamps or stagnant water on the ground. In 1717, in his monograph titled Noxious Emanations of Swamps and Their Cure, he echoed the old theories of Varro and Celsus by speculating that malaria was due to minute "bugs" or "worms" which entered the blood and revived the old idea that mosquitoes might play a role." - "Lancisi postulated two ways in which malaria might be spread by mosquitoes. In one, the insects deposit microscopic organisms in uncovered food and drink, and the human consumption of this contaminated material produces the disease. Lancisi's second postulated mechanism was the correct one for malaria. Mosquitoes, he writes, "always inject their salivary juices into the small wounds which are opened by the insects on the surface of the body." Because "all their viscera are filled with deleterious liquids...no controversy can arise among pr … [Click Below for Full Description]
