[AUCTION POSTER - COUNTRY ESTATE].
Not in KVK; NCC; WorldCat. Only survived (?) copy of an auction poster announcing the sale of the country estate Wulperhorst, originally dating from the 17th century. In the last half of the 18th century the estate came into the possession of lieutenant-stadtholder Willem Nicolaas Pesters (1717-1794) and after his death it fell to his wife Isabella van Westrenen (1728-1809). It was auctioned in 1801 and subsequently owned by Jan Anthony Taets van Amerongen heer van Woudenberg (1769-1828), after his death it was auctioned again in 1829. The new owner, Jan Elias Huydecoper, had it demolished, but decided in 1829 to build a new country house, which still exists today. With some folds and contemporary annotations relating to the sale. Good copy.

Cadogan, William
1717 - William Cadogan, first Earl of Cadogan (1675-1726), was a British military man and diplomat, best known as Marlborough's invaluable quartermaster general during the War of Spanish Succession. In 1717, when he dictated this letter due to illness, he was serving as Master of the Robes, Governor of the Isle of Wight, and British Ambassador to the Netherlands. In the letter, he apologizes that his illness has delayed his reply, and states that he has spoken “in the name of the King” to a monsignor who has then promised to “write to the court with urgency” regarding the case of a second monsignor. He also wishes the recipient “happiness and prosperity” in the new year. Written in French on a 9 ¼” x 14 ¾” full sheet, folded in half. The second half of the letter and Cadogan’s signature are on the first interior page. English transcript included. Some light soil; fly specks and a few very small tears on the margins, none affecting the text, generally very good. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

SAINT-HILAIRE, Auguste de, Adrien de JUSSIEU and Jacques CAMBESSEDES.
Borba de Moraes, p. 762; Nissen, BBI 1717; Stafleu & Cowan 10032. Rare series on Brazilian botany with 70 beautiful lithographed plates, published in 14 instalments by the French explorer, botanist and entomologist Auguste de Saint-Hilaire (1779-1853). Beginning with part 9 his two co-authors are named on the wrapper as well. After a journey of six years through Brazil (1816-1822), he brought home to France a vast collection of plants, mammals, birds and reptiles. There he dedicated himself to the publication of the results of his Brazilian journeys by working on several publications at the same time. The long journey and the pressure of work took their toll, however, and Saint-Hilaire fell ill. He was able to continue his work but not alone. Two respected colleagues, Adrien de Jussieu and Jacques Cambessèdes took over the largest part of the work. De Saint-Hilaire recovered to some degree and together they continued their work. A note in part 9 assures the readers and subscribers that the style and quality will not suffer from this change. Saint-Hilaire intended to issue 50 parts, but only these 14 were actually printed. Each instalment contains 5 plates with accompanying text. Some text leaves in the last 3 parts foxed, a tear in the back wrapper of one part and a marginal worm hole in the front wrapper and first leaf of another. In very good condition, with the bolts opened at the head, but wholly untrimmed.

BOODT, Johannes van der.
Bierens de Haan 470-471 (the first issue only); not in Oberlé, Bibl. Bachique; Oberlé, Fastes; Simon, Vinaria; Vicaire. An uncommon and very detailed illustrated account of the gauging of wine casks and the making of measuring rods, callipers, etc., for that purpose, written by a mathematics teacher. The copperplate illustrations show wine casks of different shapes and various kinds of measuring rods. Van der Boodt dedicated his book to the burgomasters and councillors of Zierikzee, where he lived and taught. This issue of the first work appears to be wholly unrecorded. With early 20th-century bookplate. In very good condition, with only minor browning and spotting. Binding slightly rubbed and hinges cracked at the head. Very good copies of an unusually early example of a printed handbook for a practical trade.

IBN AL-WARDI and Carl AURIVILLIUS.
F. Tomasson, The life of J. D. Åkerblad, pp. 20-21; WorldCat (6 copies). Rare first (and only?) edition of the thesis of the Swedish linguist, translator and orientalist Carl Aurivillius (1717-1786). It contains a transcription of a chapter on "plants and their fruits" from the Kharîdat al-'Ajâ'ib wa farîdat al-gharâib ("The pearl of wonders and the uniqueness of strange things"), the major work by the Islamic historian and geographer Ibn al-Wardi (d. 1349). The present transcription was based on a manuscript in the University Library of Uppsala. Aurivillius translated the text into Latin (on the page facing the Arabic) and provided commentaries (printed in the lower margins). The present work, however, "was seriously hampered by the lack of Arabic typefaces" (Thomasson), and Aurivillius's later works including Arabic type were to be printed in Germany.Slightly browned, occasional foxing and some minor restorations to the title-page, otherwise in good condition.

John Le Neve
o the end of the year 1715, 1717. Book. Three sections of the Monumenta Anglicana, professionally rebound in two attractive volumes. The set is comprised of inscriptions from 1650-79, 1680-99 and 1700-1715, seemingly published in reverse chronological order. The second volume is a first edition, and advertised as 'intended as a specimen of a much larger work'. Indeed, Le Nevewenton to publish three more similar collections of epitaphs-including the two ensconced in the first volume-covering different historical periods. This first collection features the contemporary obituaries of the previous 15 years, with some of the information being supplied by the stone masons before work was actually completed. The later 1718 publications, but historically and chronologically earlier volumes, deal with inscriptions from less than 100 years previously and all offer a fascinating insight into epitaphs long since weathered away. Spine labels are in French, text is in English. With some lovely vignettes, head and tail pieces and illuminated capitals throughout. Condition: Rebound in quarter cloth over marbled boards with leather spine labels. Externally, really rather smart with wear to spine labels only. Internally, firmly bound. Very light but frequent spotting throughout, some occasional handling marks. Evidence of past worming to lower half of the entire first book of the second volume. Overall: VERY GOOD. Very Good.
