TOURNEFORT, J.P.
Paris, de l'Imprimerie Royale, 1717. 2 volumes. 4to (255 x 195mm). pp. (18), (2, blank), 544; pp. (4), 526, (40, index), with 150 (some folded) engraved plates. Contemporary calf, richly gilt decorated spines with gilt lettered label (hinges cracked but firm, spines somewhat worn). First edition. "The botanist Pitton de Tournefort was sent on a mission to the Levant by Louis XIV in 1700. He was accompanied by the artist Claude Aubriet and the doctor Gundelsheimer. Pitton de Tournefort travelled extensively in the Archipelago, visiting most of the islands in the Cyclades. The travellers returned to Paris in June 1702. The text takes the form of letters to M. de Pontchartrain, who sponsored Pitton’s mission. The very fine plates are after Aubriet’s drawings, and illustrate costumes, botanical and zoological specimens, views and maps" (Blackmer catalogue). Joseph Pitton de Tournefort (1656-1707) was a French botanist and student of Pierre Magnol and professor at the Collège Royale in Paris. Tournefort was the first to describe the common azalea and rhododendron, as well as other plants he collected during this journey. The genus Tournefortia of the Boraginaceae was named after him. Tournefort notes not only plants, but geographical features, antiquities, the people he encounters, and their way of life, agriculture and industry, providing fascinating insights into areas then little known in western Europe. Hij bevat verder nog een aantal gedichten van leden die tijdens dezelfde bijeenkomst waren voorgelezen. Ook de dichter Tollens was daarbij van de partij.

First edition. A petition to the House of Commons alleging maladministration. It includes, pp.5-8: An humble representation of several grievances and hardships His Majesty's most faithful subjects, the inhabitants of the Island of Minorca, labour under, from the arbitrary proceedings of the Chief Commandants, and the troops garison'd in that Island, contrary to the promises and assurances made by His Grace the Duke of Argyle .>. SYNGE, Edward]
Dublin: printed for J. Pepyat bookseller in Skinner-Row 1717 - 4to., title printed within double-ruled border, 44pp., with contemporary ink erasures and a marginal note, bound fairly recently in old-style quarter calf over marbled boards, vellum corners, spine simply gilt and labelled. A fine, crisp, copy. First edition. Edward Synge (1659-1741), archbishop of Tuam, had been installed as the chancellor of the parish of St. Werburgh, Dublin, in 1705, and for the following eight years was one of the most popular and effective clergymen in the city. In the present, really quite detailed account, Synge notes the spectacular rise of the charity school movement in Ireland. In 1708 there were 344 charity schools educating some 8264 children. The author first addresses the need for charity-schools, where they might be located, rules that should be observed by 'the persons concern'd in charity schools', financial requirements, charitable subscribers, and suggests orders to be observed by the masters and mistresses. Children should attend school from 7 to 11 am and from 1 to 5 pm in the summer (to 4pm in the winter). Among other things, teachers should 'teach the children the true spelling of words, make them mind their stops, and bring them to read slowly and distinctly'. Thereafter, Synge gives an account of charity schools in the various Irish counties, an appendix (pp. 34-44) prints model forms for subscriptions, apprenticeships (boys), legacies, a 'fault bill'*, a list of suitable books, the co … [Click Below for Full Description]

[AUCTION POSTER - COUNTRY ESTATE].
Not in KVK; NCC; WorldCat. Only survived (?) copy of an auction poster announcing the sale of the country estate Wulperhorst, originally dating from the 17th century. In the last half of the 18th century the estate came into the possession of lieutenant-stadtholder Willem Nicolaas Pesters (1717-1794) and after his death it fell to his wife Isabella van Westrenen (1728-1809). It was auctioned in 1801 and subsequently owned by Jan Anthony Taets van Amerongen heer van Woudenberg (1769-1828), after his death it was auctioned again in 1829. The new owner, Jan Elias Huydecoper, had it demolished, but decided in 1829 to build a new country house, which still exists today. With some folds and contemporary annotations relating to the sale. Good copy.

Cadogan, William
1717 - William Cadogan, first Earl of Cadogan (1675-1726), was a British military man and diplomat, best known as Marlborough's invaluable quartermaster general during the War of Spanish Succession. In 1717, when he dictated this letter due to illness, he was serving as Master of the Robes, Governor of the Isle of Wight, and British Ambassador to the Netherlands. In the letter, he apologizes that his illness has delayed his reply, and states that he has spoken “in the name of the King” to a monsignor who has then promised to “write to the court with urgency” regarding the case of a second monsignor. He also wishes the recipient “happiness and prosperity” in the new year. Written in French on a 9 ¼” x 14 ¾” full sheet, folded in half. The second half of the letter and Cadogan’s signature are on the first interior page. English transcript included. Some light soil; fly specks and a few very small tears on the margins, none affecting the text, generally very good. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
