Samuel Collins
sp;- London - For John Collins, Seedman. and Sold by Him and R Burleigh, 1717 Book. VERY GOOD INDEED. Hardcover. First edition.. A fascinating eighteenth century work on the managing of fruit-trees. The first edition of this particular work. With two folding plates in addition to numerous head pieces, tail pieces and decorative letters. Collated: Plate to page 60 is a facsimile as is the final leaf (pages 105-106). Otherwise, this work is complete. The title pagestates thatthis work is contrary to the views of 'Mr Lawrence and Others UponGardening'. Itis very possible that the writingCollins is contrastingis Rev John Lawrence's The Clergy-Man's Recreation: Shewing the pleasure and profit of the Art of gardening from 1714. To the preface Collins notes that thispublication was inspired by his reading of Lawrence's book and his disagreement with it. This work discusses border plants against walls, the choices of wall-trees, seasons for wall-fruit-trees, the planting, theseasonal pruning and more. Specific fruit treesinclude cherries, plums, pears, quinces andfigs. There are also writings on pest-control such as preventing earwigs from damaging fruits. Thegrowing of fruit trees in Britaindates back to ancient times due to theirfood producingqualities. For centuries fruit plants were regarded as ornamental and essential. This work provides a fascinating insight into what would becomethe popular walled gardens of the18th century. Avery scarce and important work, we know of only one sold in the last ten years. Condition: In a quarter calf binding with paper covered boards. This wo … [Click Below for Full Description]

[FREIND (John, M.D.)]
4to, pp. 29 (1), 1 f. (part-title), pp. 119 (1), 1 f. part-title (a cancellans?), pp. 174; bound with another work (see below), contemp. calf gilt (worn, rubbed & scuffed), Bound with: FREIND (John), De Purgantibus . . . Epistola, pp. 147 (1), Londini, Impensis Gu. Innys, 1719. Wormtrack in the text of a few leaves, affecting letters. Of the first work, ESTC notes that it was printed by William Bowyer in an edition of 500, with 50 large paper copies. Freind (1675-1728), younger brother of Richard Freind (who became head of Westminster School), studied medicine after graduating from Christ Church, Oxford. In 1704 he was appointed lecturer in chemistry at Oxford, but the following year accompanied the army into Spain, and again to Flanders, from where he returned in 1713, and set up practice in London. In 1716 he was elected a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, delivered the Goulstonian Lectures the following year, and in 1718 was chosen as one of the censors. In 1720 he was Harveian orator, and in 1722 was elected M.P. for Launceston, Cornwall. However, he was suspended the same year, owing to his alleged Jacobite sympathies, and spent six months in the Tower. Hurdling this setback, he was appointed physician to Queen Caroline, a post he held until his death in 1728.

ROSCOMMON (Wentworth Dillor), Earl of and DUKE (Richard)
London: Printed for J. Tonson. 1717 - FIRST EDITION. 8vo, 198 x 117, pp. [xxxvi], 536, pages 244 and 495 misnumbered 234 and 465 respectively, with a separate title-page for Roscommon's "Essay on Translated Verse" and the same for "An Essay on Poetry," contemporary calf, rebacked in non-matching calf, but a good copy, with the autograph and date of "Wm Somer May 1st 1779" on the rect of the front free endpaper, and on the front paste-down end-paper, but with rebacking paper obscuring part of name, and "Thomas Francis/ anno domini 1748" on the title-page. The poet and Church of England clergyman Richard Duke (1658 - 1711) published several poems and verses separately, but this is the only collected edition of his works. The poem "The Review" appears here for the first time, written at the behest of the sometime Jacobite Thomas Sheridan. The Dublin-born Earl of Roscommon (1627 - 1785) enjoyed the distinction of being buried in Westminster Abbey. Johnson concluded his life of Roscommon with these words: "Of Roscommon's works, the judgment of the publick seems to be right. He is elegant, but not great; he never labours after exquisite beauties, and he seldom falls into gross faults. His versification is smooth, but rarely vigorous; and his rhymes are remarkably exact. He improved taste, if he did not enlarge knowledge, and may be numbered among the benefactors to English literature." [Attributes: First Edition]

(circa1855).. Very attractive colour woodblock map of China during the Eastern Han period. Central vertical crease. A few tiny holes but overall a very good and attractive copy. 36 x 47cm. This attractive coloured woodblock map of China during the Eastern Han Period (25 AD - 220 AD) was published in a series of maps issued in the historical atlas of China, 唐土歴代州郡沿革図 (Tōdo rekidai shūgun enkaku-zu) which translates as "Maps of China Representing Historical Changes of Provinces and Counties". This very popular work was edited by 長久保赤水 Nagakubo Sekisui (1717-1801) and was published in a number of editions from 1789 to the end of the Edo period. Egawa Yoshihiro 江川美啓 carved the blocks for these colourful beguiling maps which show place names in rectangular boxes and counties and districts in oval shaped boxes. There are some small variations between the editions and it seems likely from the appearance of the compass (showing the earthly branches as well as the four points of the compass) to the left of the map that this copy was published in one of the editions published in the 1850s. .

Ottimo esemplare genuino e fresco, stampato su carta vergellata. Presenta minime saltuarie fioriture. Dr King
R. Burleigh, 1717. Hardcover. Very Good. 28-35, 3pp. With publisher's catalogue to the rear. Uncommon. Rebound in cloth with new endpapers. Written by Leonard Welsted (1688-1747), who is perhaps best known for Pope's satirization of him in the 'Dunciad' and 'Peri Bathos'. 'Apple-Pye' was first published in the 'The Tory Tatler' in 1710 and was wrongly attributed to William King. This particular copy followed the titular poem in 'The Art of Dress' by John Breval in 1717. It is bound here with only its half title. Condition: Very good. Some light browning, marginal foxing and thumb marks.
