F. Tomasson, The life of J. D. Åkerblad, pp. 20-21; WorldCat (6 copies). Rare first (and only?) edition of the thesis of the Swedish linguist, translator and orientalist Carl Aurivillius (1717-1786). It contains a transcription of a chapter on "plants and their fruits" from the Kharîdat al-'Ajâ'ib wa farîdat al-gharâib ("The pearl of wonders and the uniqueness of strange things"), the major work by the Islamic historian and geographer Ibn al-Wardi (d. 1349). The present transcription was based on a manuscript in the University Library of Uppsala. Aurivillius translated the text into Latin (on the page facing the Arabic) and provided commentaries (printed in the lower margins). The present work, however, "was seriously hampered by the lack of Arabic typefaces" (Thomasson), and Aurivillius's later works including Arabic type were to be printed in Germany.Slightly browned, occasional foxing and some minor restorations to the title-page, otherwise in good condition.

POPE (Alexander):
London: Printed by W. Bowyer, for Bernard Lintot [and] London: Printed by J. Wright, for Lawton Gilliver..., 1717, 1735, 1717. FIRST EDITIONS. 2 volumes. 4to, 282 x 180 mms., and folio, 297 x 188 mms., pp. [xxxii], 408; [xvi], 72, [4], 36, 12, [37 - 39], 40 - 91 [92 blank], 14, [1], 16 - 17, 81 [sic], 201 [202 Errata], including half-title in each volume, title-page in volume 2 in red and black, folding engraved portrait of Pope in volume 1 (mended at folds), contemporary calf volume 1, neatly rebacked with old spine and original morocco label preserved, contemporary mottled calf volume 2, skilfully rebacked in calf to match volume 1, morocco label; some gatherings very browned, slight worming in volume 2 (1735), but generally a very good set of this first collected edition of Pope's works, with the armorial bookplate of Edward Wood in volume 2, as well as the autograph "Phillipa Parsons" on the top margin of the title-page of volume 2, along with a couple of minor wormholes. Volume 1 is the first issue; in the second issue, Tonson's name was added to the imprint. The erratic pagination in volume 2 is caused in part by the insertion of the epitaphs between pp. 36 and 37 of the satires. Writing to his publisher, John Murray in 1817, Byron observed, "I took Moore's poems and my own and some others and went over them side by side with Pope's, and I was really astonished (I ought not to have been so) and mortified at the ineffable distance in point of sense, harmony, effect, and even imagination, passion, and invention, between the little Queen Anne's man, and us of the Lower E … [Click Below for Full Description]

A nice astronomical manuscript in Latin giving information and tables of data about solar and lunar eclipses, illustrated with three full-page diagrams. The calculations are made for viewing from Amsterdam. Each of the three principal sections has a sort of title-page, all three given above. They concern the lunar eclipses of 16/27 March 1717 and 9/20 September 1718 (both clearly noted as past events) and the solar eclipse of 11/22 May 1724, which may have occurred after the manuscript was written. For this last, the manuscript refers to the tables of astronomical data compiled by the Dutch astronomer (Johan) Philip Lansberge (1561-1632) and published at Middleburg in 1632 and later editions. In very good condition, with only minor spotting and a couple small marginal stains. The binding is somewhat worn at the hinges and edges, and the mottling has slightly cracked the surface of the leather, but it still remains in good condition.

Album Amicorum
Oblong 8vo. 179 ff. with 51 entries and Weber's autogr. note of ownership on fol. 2r. Contemp. brown calf with richly gilt spine and covers. Brocade endpapers. All edges gilt. Unique scholars' album of the philologist Nikolaus Weber (1699-1751), headmaster of the Nuremberg Holy Ghost school, with entries by scholars mainly based at the Universities of Nuremberg and Altdorf. One of the most important among the contributors to this volume, almost all of which are biographically recorded, is the Swedish astronomer Andreas Celsius (1701-44), who on 22 July 1733 penned these lines: "Problema: Unam eandemq[ue] theologiam et religionem per universum terrarum orbem propagare. - Resolutio: Doceatur ubiq[ue] gentium Philosophia certa et solida" (Problem: How to spread the same theology and religion throughout the entire world? - Solution: Teach all peoples a certain and solid philosophy). On behalf of the Swedish king, Celsius had visited the principal observatories of Europe in 1732/33 to form an opinion of the current developments in astronomy. His scientific "Grand Tour" had also led him to Nuremberg, where he had spent three months at the home of the astronomer Johann Gabriel Doppelmayr (see below) and had regularly participated in the specialist discussions hosted by the physician Christoph Jacob Trew (see below). 1733 is also the year of Celsius's "316 Observationes de Lumine Boreali", the first comprehensive treatise on the Northern Lights, published by Endter in Nuremberg. That year, Celsius also performed the first exact geographical measurement of the town's dimensions. - C … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cremona, Pietro Ricchini, 1717. In - 4ø; 14 cc., 356 pp., 2 tavole f. t. ripiegate - 6 cc., 184 pp., 5 tavole f.t. ripiegate, numerose illustrazioni xilografiche nel testo di cui molte a piena pagina; legatura coeva in tutta pergamena con titolo manoscritto al dorso. Ottimo esemplare. "Alessandro Capra's books on architecture are among the few Italian theoretical treatises published in the seventeenth century? Capra does not consider architecture as the art of building but as a science with a strong engineering aspect." (Millard). [Click Below for Full Description]

Rome: Typographia Camera Apostolica, 1717. Hardcover. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 8vo (163x104 mm). [20], 531 pp. Contemporary blind stamped pigskin over wooden boards with brass catches and clasps. Title somewhat stained, otherwise virtually unspotted and unstained. Provenance: Monastery of St. Nicholas, Innsbruck with their dated inscription (1721) on the title-page and final leaf. An exceptionally fine copy of a rare edition of the Church Index of Prohibited Books. ---- This was something sparked off by the Reformation and first issued in 1543 and was then first published in 1559. Thereafter the office of the Apostolic Camera periodically published updated catalogues of books deemed to be dangerous to faith and morals. This particular issue reprints the 1710 Decree of Clement XI prohibiting discussion of the Coeremoniarum Sinensium, or Chinese Rites. These concerned the elements of Confucianism that Fr Matteo Ricci S.J. had incorporated into the brand of Catholicism propagated in the Sino-Manchu Empire. Fine.
