A Voyage to the South-Sea, and Along the Coasts of Chili and Peru, in the Years 1712, 1713, and 1714, particularly describing the genius and constitution of the inhabitants, as well Indians as Spaniards: their customs and manners; their natural history, mines, commodities, traffick with Europe, &c. ... With a postscript by Dr. Edmund Halley

London: Printed for Jonah Bowyer, 1717. 4to. (9 3/8 x 7 inches). Title in red and black. 37 engraved maps and views (22 maps [15 folding], 13 plates [1 folding] and 2 folding profiles). Contemporary panelled calf (rebacked), modern dark blue shot silk-covered box. First edition in English of this important Pacific voyage, after the original French edition published in Paris in 1716. According to Hill the present first edition in English "is preferred ... because it contains a postscript by Edmund Halley ... which corrects certain geographical errors made by Frézier." Other authorities agree: "This English edition is much sought after" (Borba de Moraes). "The relation of M. Frezier has always been highly esteemed from his character as an author of great truthfulness, as well as for the numerous exact maps with which it is illustrated" (Field). A "production of unrivaled interest and beauty" (Sabin). This book is unusual in that, with the exception of the specially produced frontispiece/route map, all the maps and plates are printed from the same printing plates as were used for the engravings in the first edition published in French in Paris. The author, "a French Royal military engineer, was under contract to sail to Spanish possessions in South America to construct forts for defense against English and Dutch attacks. The French government also ordered him to chart the western coast of South America ... The first part of this book gives an interesting account of the voyage from France around Cape Horn ... The second part relates to the voyage along the coasts of Chile and Peru, describing the chief towns and cities. The observant Frézier brought back information of considerable geographical and scientific value. Much data is included about the native inhabitants ... Frézier introduced the ancestor of the modern strawberry to France from Chile." (Hill p.231) The maps depict South America or the location of anchorages and cities visited during the voyage. The plates illustrate the natives and their customs. Borba de Moraes, p.329; Cox II, 627; European Americana 717/66; Field 568; Hill (2004) 654; Sabin 25924; Spence 482.

        Historia Bibliothecae Fabricianae

Titles in red & black. Six vols. 4to, cont. vellum over boards (a few bindings a little warped). Wolfenbüttel: 1717-18-19-21-22-24. First edition of this catalogue which rarely appears on the market. Fabricius (1644-1729), was a leading classical philologist and inspector of the schools of the Duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg. This is "a biobibliographical dictionary. It is a roughly classified list of books owned by Johannes Fabricius, with brief but very valuable accounts of the life and writings of the various authors. Since larger and more recent reference works often do not mention these authors, who were chiefly minor sixteenth- and seventeenth-century scholars, Fabricius is likely to give helpful information. Fabricius was obviously more interested in giving this information than in making a catalogue of his library, for the Historia does not claim to be a complete catalogue."Taylor, Book Catalogues, p. 7(& see pp. 11, 108, 186, & 204). Minor browning but a fine set. Brunet, II. 1154"Cet ouvrage, travaillé avec soin et qu'on a souvent cité." .

The Clergy-Man's Recreation : Shewing the Pleasure and Profit of the Art of Gardening. [With:] The Gentleman's Recreation : or the Second Part of the Art of Gardening Improved. Containing Several New Experiments and Curious Observations relating to Fruit Trees: Particularly a New Method of Building Walls with Horizontal Shelters

London: Printed for Bernard Lintott, between the Temple Gates in Fleet Street, 1717. Two works bound as one. Octavo, 84 & [19], 115, [1] pages. Fifth and Second editions, respectively. The "first original eighteenth century English treatise on gardening" [Henrey, p. 415], together with its companion, The Gentleman's Recreation. In 1718, following the printing of this volume, a third work was added, The Fruit-garden Kalendar... in order to make his "two former treatises of gardening compleat, and if possible more intelligible." [from the preface of The Fruit-garden Kalendar]. The works are devoted almost entirely to fruit culture, and contains one of the earliest published records of transmission of a virus by grafting. The second volume work contains an 11 page appendix, written by the author's brother, Edward Laurence, outlining a method for finding a Meridian Line, and an advertisement for a forthcoming book titled Timber, Measured and Valued. A few small wormholes to the bottom margin of a signature or two of the second work. Folding plate number one with a closed tear along the fold. Otherwise generally very good internally. In full brown, blind-tooled calf, with raised bands, and a now illegible paper label. Hinges cracked externally, but holding. Overall, good or better. With the bookplate, and ownership signature to the title page of Mr. Edward Stratford, Armorer and Earl of Aldborough. [Henrey 937, 943; Fussell, Old English Farming Books page 101].

THE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER AND ADMINISTRATION OF THE SACRAMENTS AND OTHER RITES AND CEREMONIES OF THE CHURCH ACCORDING TO THE USE OF THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND

London: Engraved and Printed by the Permission of John Baskett ... Sold by John Sturt, Engraver ..., 1717.. xxii,162,[2]pp. comprised of engraved dedication, prefatory matter and text, advert leaf and 4pp. subscribers list. Octavo. Richly bound in modern black morocco, raised bands, gilt spine label, boards with decorative roll in blind around edges, edges with original silvering. A bit of foxing to retained original binder's blanks, uniform slight toning to textblock, otherwise near fine, with the paper volvelle on p. V unsullied by time or abuse. Enclosed in a ultra suede-lined cloth folding chemise. First edition, printing in octavo format. This is the variant/impression in which page V has an ornamental border composed almost entirely of cherubs and there is no roman numeral at the head of the page. It is also one of the less common copies with the margins, initials and textblocks ruled in red. All aspects of the contents were executed by English engraver and calligrapher, John Sturt via silverplate engraving. Each page is surrounded by a delicate border, and many pages of the main text include one or more of a total of 129 different engraved scenes relevant to the particular text. Sturt (1658-1730) engraved most of the works of English writing-master, John Ayres, and contributed engravings to a number of religious or illustrated publications of his time. The advert leaf enumerates several of them, including the 1721 edition of THE ORTHODOX COMMUNICANT - suggesting that the advert leaf was revised as copies were bound and sold in the years following publication. There were also an unspecified number of copies imposed in 4to format, and yet other copies appear without red rules enhancing the borders and text blocks. ROTHSCHILD 1987. ESTC T141241. A Voyage to the South-Sea, and along the Coasts of Chili and Peru

London,: Jonah Bowyer,, 1717.. Quarto, with 22 maps and plans and 15 engraved plates and views; an attractive copy in contemporary calf, gilt, spine gilt in compartments with double labels. Rare: the first English edition, with a new postscript by Edmund Halley dealing with South American navigation. FrÈzier sailed under the Horn to reach the west coast of South America, and his description and maps (especially those of the west coast anchorages) were much used by later navigators. He gives good descriptions of Chile and Peru. One of his odder claims to fame is that he introduced the strawberry to Europe from Chile. It is illustrated here.'FrÈzier, a French royal military engineer, was under contract to sail to the Spanish possessions in South America to construct forts for defence against English and Dutch attacks. The French government also ordered him to chart the western coast of South America in order that they would have some knowledge of that area for possible military operations. The first part of the book gives an interesting account of the voyage from France around Cape Horn and was used by contemporary and even by later navigators. The second part relates to the voyage along the coasts of Chile and Peru, describing the chief towns and cities. FrÈzier, a man of observation, brought back information of considerable geographical and scientific value. Much data is included about the native inhabitants... The first English translation contains the same engravings as the original, but is preferred to the latter because it contains a postscript by Edmund Halley (of comet fame) which corrects certain geographical errors...' Jeffery Amherst ASL to Lord Sydney

Montreal {House in UK] : AMHERST, Jeffery (1717-1797), 1789. 1st Edition. No binding. Very Good. AUTHOR SIGNED. Letter written to "Lord Sydney" THOMAS TOWNSHEND, 1733-1800 ASL contents: Montreal, 14th April, 1789 and reads: ... "My Lord I have the honour of your lordships' letter acquainting me you had presented to the King the Address of the Lieutenant Governor and of the States of the Island of Gurnsey congratulating his Majesty on the happy reestablishment of his health which his majesty was pleased to receive in the most gracious manner. I am much obliged to your Lordship for the information which I will immediately communicate to the Lieutenant Governor and of the States of the Island. I am with great respect my Lord. Your Lordships most humble and obedient servant Amherst" & Very good condition.& , Amherst held the office of Governor of Guernsey between 1770 and 1797., This letter likely a reference to Geo III's problems with porphyria, from which he suffered. George III had a particularly severe form of porphyria. His first attack occurred in 1765, four years after his marriage to Queen Charlotte. Further signs of the disease showed up in 1788-1789. From 1811 to the time of his death in 1820 the royal patient became progressively insane and blind. He was nursed in isolation, and kept in straight jackets and behind bars in his private apartments at Windsor Castle & Amherst served as the nominal Crown Governor of Virginia from 1759-1768, though Francis Fauquier continued his role as acting governor from the previous term. During this period he also served as the first Governor General of British North America from 1760-1763. This office still exists as the Canadian monarch's representative in Canada. Amherst was raised to the peerage in 1776, as Baron Amherst of Holmesdale. During the American Revolutionary War he rejected a field command, since he had close relations with numerous personalities of the opposite side. He was promoted to Brigadier General in 1778, and became Commander-in-Chief of the Forces. He was replaced as Commander-in-Chief in February, 1782 by Henry Seymour Conway. Amherst again became Commander-in-Chief in 1793. He retired from that post in 1795, and was promoted to the rank of Field Marshal the following year. Amherst died on 3 August 1797.

Particularly describing the genius and constitution of the inhabitants, as well Indians as Spaniards: their customs and manners, their natural history, mines, commodities, traffick with Europe, &c. With a postscript by Edmund Halley and an account of the settlement, commerce, and riches of the Jesuites in Paraguay.

4°. 7 n.n. Bl., 335 S., 9 n.n. S. Index. Borba de Moraes I, 329. - Palau 94965. - Sabin 25926. - Nissen ZBI 1433. - Erste englische Ausgabe. - First English edition. Edited in French in 1716, but without the postscript by Edmund Halley (the one who gave the name to the comet) and the anonymous report on the Jesuits in Paraguay. Frezier, member of a French family emigrated to Scotland and having returned to France, was born in Chambéry in 1682, studied in Paris and became a military engineer with very diversified interests. Thus his 'Traité des feux d'artifice', first edited in 1706, is considered a reference work on fireworks. Sent on orders of the French court to spy on the Spanish forts and settlements in South America and to verify the calculations done by the expedition of Louis Feuillée between 1707 and 1712, Frezier brought back invaluable scientific information from his stays. He thus describes the Chilean strawberry (Fragaria Chilonesis) and brought this fruit to Europe for the first time. His maps and descriptions of Cape Horn were very much considered in the 19th century and his descriptions of the Argentine, Chilean and Peruvian native populations and the early European settlements were amongst the most appreciated. With the exception of the frontispiece, the above edition contains the same copper plates as those of the French publication. This edition is particularly valued for the 3-paged postscript by Halley and the additional description of the Jesuit missions. The maps and views of Sta. Catharina, Tierra del Fuego, La Conception, Santiago, Valparaiso, Lima, Arica, San Salvador de Bahia and others. With a remarkable representation of early golf. The total number of plates is 38, not as proposed on the title (37 plates). The endpaper is loosened but otherwise an immaculate copy. The beautiful binding is slightly worn. 1717. Good. MARIN, Pieter. DICTIONNAIRE COMPLET HOLLANDOIS ET FRANCOIS. COMPLEET NEDERDUITSCH EN FRANSCH WOORDENBOEK. Amsterdam, printed for the author in de Wye-Capelsteeg, and also to be found at the Widow Gysbert de Groot and Pieter de Coup, 1710 and 1717. Quarto. Two volumes. [xl]1208[4]; [xx]1062pp. First edition, with both volumes signed by the author on the "copye van de Privilegie" page. The first volume, published in 1710, has French to Dutch vocabulary; the second, 1717, is Dutch to French. Both have engraved allegorical titlepages, explained in Dutch on a separate, printed leaf. Jeffery Amherst ASL to Lord Sydney

Your Lordships most humble and obedient servant Amherst" Very good condition. , Amherst held the office of Governor of Guernsey between 1770 and 1797., This letter likely a reference to Geo III's problems with porphyria, from which he suffered. George III had a particularly severe form of porphyria. His first attack occurred in 1765, four years after his marriage to Queen Charlotte. Further signs of the disease showed up in 1788-1789. From 1811 to the time of his death in 1820 the royal patient became progressively insane and blind. He was nursed in isolation, and kept in straight jackets and behind bars in his private apartments at Windsor Castle Amherst served as the nominal Crown Governor of Virginia from 1759-1768, though Francis Fauquier continued his role as acting governor from the previous term.

La Nuova Architettura, Civile e Militare... 2 volumes

First printing, 1717, 2 volumes bound in one, quarto, original vellum, pp. (28), 356, (12), 184, with Book 5 of the first volume having 44 numbered plates and the 2nd volume having 39 numbered plates, along with many other in-text illustrations, woodcut title pages for each section, portrait frontispiece of the author, diagrams, etc., but we count only 6 of 7 folding plates, so possibly lacking one folding plate. Very good binding with faint ex-library marks (circular old paper labels to spine), mainly removed bookplate on pastedown with proper 'withdrawn' stamp, perforated stamp to title page, and faint ink stamps to next page. Otherwise, a nice bright crisp copy of this architectural classic, text in Italian. Bears the following lengthy inscription on flyleaf: 'Soto alla stampa del Disegno della Torre di Cremona. Illustrissimo D. Cremonensis urbis ordinum conservatori D. G. V. D. Francesco Arissio Celeberrimis in Italia Academiis Adscripto, ac eruditissimi operis Cremona Literata / Inscripti / Auctori diligentissimo &c. / Docte Cremonense numerans Heroas, ARISS. Hoc Tibi Palladie vovimus artis opus. Barabara Puramideum cedant mircula Turri, cui crescit Lauris Trina Corono Tius. In specimin [?] Joseph di Forbicis." Apparently inscribed to Francesco Arissio, also known as Francesco Arisi and who is described thus in the Oxford Companion to Italian Literature: Francesco Arisi (1657–1743). Cremonese lawyer, historian, and poet, friend to many literary men of his time and member of many academies. He published volumes of Petrarchan verse (some of which has been described as ‘senile’), orations, dithyrambs, and 325 sacred sonnets . In his Cremona literata he aimed to publish all surviving biographical and bibliographical information pertaining to the literary activity of his native town. He allowed himself an enormous chronological range (from the 1st c. bc to his own time), and was not always the most considerate of scholars, preferring summaries to publishing original documents. His work was admired by Muratori whom he undoubtedly influenced.

Fasti consolari dell'accademia Fiorentina [A Biographical History of the Florentine Academy]. - Containing Viviani's "Racconto istorico della Vita di Galileo Galilei" [Historical Account of the Life of Galileo Galilei].

Firenze, Nella Stamperia S.A.R. Per Gio: Gaetano, e Sant Franchi, 1717. 4to. Contemporary full vellum with handwritten title to spine. A bit of wear to capitals and a bit of minor soiling to boards, but a fine and handsome copy. Inner hinges a bit weak. Internally nice and clean, with just a bit of light minor occasional brownspotting. Large engraved pictorial vignette (heading: Accdemia Fiorentina) to title-page. Very nice woodcut vignettes and initials throughout. XXXI, (1), 676, (2, - Approvazioni) pp. [Viviani's Galilei-biography: pp. 397-431].. First edition of this extensive work of biographies of the people of the Florentine Academy. Among the dozens of biographies in the present work, we have the first printing of Viviani's seminal biography of Galilei, the first, and by far the most important biography of the great astronomer ever written. It is from this biography that we have most of the canonical stories and anecdotes about Galilei that keep being repeated and quoted - e.g. the legend of Galilei demonstrating to his students that Aristotle was wrong about speed of fall being related to the weight of an object by dropping balls of different mass off the leaning tower in Pisa; the stories of how he came up with the idea of the pendulum after having watched a suspended lamp swing back and forth in the cathedral of Pisa when he was still a student there - and furthermore also how his first experiments with pendulums were carried out (by his son due to his own failing eyesight), etc., etc.Vincenzo Viviani (1622-1703) considered himself Galilei's last pupil and he spent most of his life reinstating the ideas of Galilei. He was merely 20 years old when his master died, and he was present at the bedside of the dying master as well as at the removal of his body. Thus, he was a direct witness to many of the events that took place in Galilei's life, and as such he is an indispensible biographer - especially seeing that no other person had attempted a biograhy of the great astronomer. After Galielei's death, Viviani was granted a pension by the King of France, in exchange for him writing a great, massive biography of his master. This planned massive work never came about, though, - probably due to both fear of retaliation, inabilty to reconcile geometry with the dogmas of faith, and finally a general fear of what such a biography could carry with it politically, etc. (he had apparantly also been warned of this). What we have left of the massive work is that which is present in Salvini's collection of biographies of the Florentine Academy. The work is written in the form of a letter addressed to Prince Leopoldo de'Medici, and it was not printed during Viviani's lifetime, but only in 1717, in the present book. Though not as extensive as had originally been planned, and though not printed as soon as originally planned, the work is still of the greatest importance to our knowledge about Galilei and forms the foundation for all later works on the astronomer. For the student of Galilei, it is absolutely indispensible. Being the first biography of Galilei, and the only one written by a contemporary, and one who knew him very well, the work plays a greater role in the study of the master's life than any other work.Viviani may not have been a faithful chronicler or a clear interpreter, but we will have to make do with that which he can tell us about Galilei. Though not all stories may be true, almost all of the most famous anecdotes and legends that we have about Galilei stem from the present work. After having described the various marvels, discoveries, etc. of Galilei's life, Viviani ends by describing the last hours of Galilei's life: "il Mercoledì delli 8. de Gennaio del 1641. ab Inc. a ore 4. di notte in età di settantasette anni, mesi dieci, e giorni vent, con Filosofica, e Christiana constanza, rese l'Anima al suo Creatore, inviandosi questa a godere, e rimarar più d'apresso quelle eterne maraviglie, ch'ella con tanta avidità, & impazienza aveva procurator per mezzo di fragil artifizio d'avvicinare agli occhi di noi mortali." (p. 423) ["On the night of Jan. 8, 1641, at about 4 o'clock at night at the age of 77 years, 10 months, and 20 days, with philosophical and Christian firmness he rendered up his soul to its Creator, sending it, as he liked to believe, to enjoy and to watch from a closer vantage point those eternal and immutable marvels which he, by means of a fragile device, had brought closer to our mortal eyes with such eagerness and impatience."] - clearly showing the sense that Viviani had for Galilei's biblically inspired faith. The work furthermore contains several hitherto unpublished treatises on men from the famous scientific academy of Florence
