A Second Tale of a Tub: or, The History of Robert Powel the Puppet-Show-Man

Printed for J. Roberts. First edition.. Spine rebacked; red leather label chipped with some loss; edges a little rubbed; very good copy.. Not in Teerink. 8vo, contemporary Cambridge style calf, red leather label, gilt lettering. Engraved frontis; imprimatur leaf. An attack on the controversial English statesman Robert Harley, for whom Swift had worked, by the diplomat and pro-Whig pamphleteer Burnet and his sometimes partner George Duckett, friend of Addison and commissioner of excise. Burnet and Duckett also collaborated on two weeklies, Pasquin and The Grumbler, and a pamphlet critical of Pope's Homer, The Homerides (1716), which earned them a place in the Dunciad Variorum. Here they tell the story of manipulative, greedy puppeteer, descended from a Roman henchman which is obviously based on Harley, who had just been sent to the Tower. Though not traditionally considered prose fiction, A Second Tale of a Tub is an early example of collaborative fiction.

        Chirurgia Curiosa ...

. Frankfurt - Leipzig: Michael Rohrlachs seel. - Siehe ausführlich zur Ohrenheilkunde - A.Politzer, Gesch. d.         Il mondo ingannato da falsi medici. Discorsi del Dottor Giuseppe Gazola, Veronese, Medico Cesareo, ed Accademico Alethofilo. (Opera postuma)

In zweyen Theilen.

- Nürnberg, J.D.Tauber, 1716, 4°, (44), 381, (11) + 358, 21, (18) pp., Frontispiz u. 9 doppelblattgrosse Kupferstichtafeln, Halbpergameinteinband. "Fabricius describes the extraction of teeth, showing good pictures of forceps. He also refers to the filling of teeth with gold leaves." Krivatsy NLM-Cat. no.3820; Hirsch-H. II, 461; DSB IV, 507; Leonardo, Lives of Master Surgeons, 559-61; Zimmermann-Veith, Great ideas in the history of surgery, 230-238; Bick, Source book of orthopedics, 43-44; Zeis 9,38,146,151. "A reprint of the translation printed in 1698 of the Voyage of Sieur Accarrete to Buenos Aires, from Thevenot's Collection, without any acknowledgement of the source from whence it was taken" - JCB. The original was supposedly RELATION DES VOYAGES DANS LA RIVIERE DE LA PLATA (Paris, 1632), although EUROPEAN AMERICANA says this edition is "very possibly a ghost". The handsome folding map by Moll is "A New Map of Part of the Great River de la Plata, of Tucuman...." The dedication in this edition by Darby is addressed to the directors of the South Sea Company. In it Darby points to a profitable future in the South American trade: "I don't doubt but by your wise Direction, under the Patronage of your August Governour, our Wealth and Commerce will be vastly increas'd: this Way being evidently the easiest and speediest to convey the Product and Manufactures of Europe to Chili and Peru, and also the safest to bring Gold and Silver from thence into this part of the World." EUROPEAN AMERICANA locates only four copies (DLC, MnU, NNH, RPJCB). EUROPEAN AMERICANA 716/1. SABIN 42918. PALAU 1690. JCB (1)III:215.

Amsterdam: Francois l'Honore, 1716. Duodecimo, contemporary vellum, titled in ink on the spine, old patch to lower cover; a good copy. Law and politics in Fenelon's Minos utopia. 'Nouvelle edition' (according to the title-page) of this imaginary voyage, an early work in the tradition of Fénélon's {i Avantures de Télémaque}, and a continuation of its fourth book. Fénélon's {i Télémaque} was an idealised account of the Roman Republic, and one of the most important books in the French classical tradition of the imaginary voyage. Although the authorship of {i Les Loix du Roy Minos} remains unknown, it is one of the most inventive of the Fénélon imitations, a detailed investigation of the legal and political system of the utopian Minos: the focus on the courts and policing of the kingdom suggests an author associated with the legal system. The book is rare: OCLC notes a single copy (City University of New York Graduate Library).

Comitatus principalis Tirolis in quo Episc. Tridentino et Brixensis.

Homann Johann Baptist, Norimberga.

Paris Chez Jean-Geoffroy Nyon, Etienne Ganeau, Jacque Quillau 1716 - First Edition in Contemporary Calf FREZIER, Amédée François. Paris: Chez Jean-Geoffroy Nyon, Etienne Ganeau, Jacque Quillau, 1716. First Editon. Large octavo (9 7/8 x 7 1/2 inches; 252 x 191 mm). xiv, 298, [2] pp. Complete with thirty-seven numbered engraved maps and plates, some of which are folding. Beautifully illustrated with plates depicting everything from strawberries to Indian games. Excellent studies of cities and settlements of the west coast of Spanish America. Full contemporary calf, spine elaborately stamped in gilt. Red morocco spine label, lettered in gilt. Edges speckled red. Edges a bit rubbed and corners a bit bumped. Head and tail of the spine slightly chipped. Overall a very good copy. Plate IX, showing a Chilean in the posture of playing La Sueca, is commonly regarded as the earliest depiction of a form of golf. Frézier introduced strawberries from Chile to France. "Frézier, a French royal military engineer, was under contract to sail to the Spanish possessions in South America to construct forts for defense against English and Dutch attacks. The French government also ordered him to chart the western coast of South America, in order that they would have some knowledge of that area for possible military operations. The first part of this book gives an interesting account of the voyage from France around Cape Horn and was used by contemporary and even by later navigators. The second part relates to the voyage along the coasts of Chile and Peru, describing the chief towns and cities. Frézier, a man of observation, brought back information of consideration geographical and scientific value" (Hill). Hill I, pp. 115-6. Sabin 25925.

Paris, J. G. Nyon, E. Ganeau & J. Quillau, 1716. - 4to. xiv + 298 + [2]p. With 24 maps and plans (17 folding) by A. Bercy le fils and Fonbonne, and 13 plates (1 folding) engraved by N. Guerard le fils and J. B. Scotin; ornamental engraved vignette and historiated initials preceding dedication, some musical notation in the text. Ornamental woodcuts and initials. 19th century half calf; spine gilt with armorial stamp gilt-stamped on tailend of spine. First edition of a classic in the literature on South American voyages of exploration. Frézier (1682-1737), a military engineer from Savoy, sailed to Chile and Peru in 1712 with a French commission to assess the strength of Spanish settlements on the Pacific coast. His account of the expedition was much valued as an early contribution to the hydrographical knowledge of the region, but is today of interest for its keen observations on the life, customs, commerce, and natural history of Chile, Peru, and Brazil. The author was the first Frenchman to accomplish an accurate chart of the Straits of Magellan and of the region round Cape Horn, and his work served as a guide to later navigators. The folding plans of the cities visited are often enhanced by inset panoramic views, as in the case of Callao, Concepción, Valparaíso, La Serena, Salvador de Bahía, and Angra (Azores). The chapters on Indian and creole life include descriptions of costume and architecture, music and dancing (pp232-233), food and drink, and pastimes, with plates showing male and female costume, the ritual of drinking maté (Paraguayan tea), Chilean Indians playing the ‘Sueca’, a game resembling hockey, flour-making, etc. On pp241-246 the author describes the cruel and mean treatment of the Indians by the creoles, who were not permitted to have Indians as slaves, and therefore favoured their African slaves imported from Angola and Guinea via Portobello and Panama; these in turn were not allowed to mix with the Indians and adopted their masters’ condescension towards them. The Indians consequently nurtured an implacable hatred of both the creoles and their slaves, and hid away provisions and any mineral riches they might discover. The section on Brazil treats the island of Santa Catharina (pp17-27), and Bahia, (pp272-279), then the country’s capital, where the author comments on the African slave trade and on the large population of Jews; a folding plate represents two negro slaves carrying a passenger in a sedan chair. Frézier’s studies of natural history are only remembered today for bringing back Chilean strawberry plants which were successfully propagated in France by Bernard de Jussieu, and here illustrated life-size on plate XI. There are descriptions of the maté tea plant (pp228-230), of the coca plant (pp246-247), of guano (p137), and plates representing the cotton plant, exotic fishes and llamas. Light foxing at beginning and end, otherwise a good copy. Borba de Moraes 328; Hill, p115; Leclerc 1736; Palau 94964. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
