Orthographischer Auffzug eines großen Herrn Pallasts oder Königlichen Hauses, mit dem Durchschnitt deß vorderen Seiten Hoffs.

Paul Decker o.J. (ca. 1716)., Augsburg - P. Decker Archit. invent. et del. (Paulus Decker Architectus inuentauit et delineauit: Der Architekt Paul Decker entwarf und zeichnete). Cum Privil. Sac. Caes. Maj. (Cum Priuilegio Sacrae Caesareae Maiestatis: Mit der Erlaubnis der heiligen und kaiserlichen Majestät). Ioh. August. Corvinus Sculps. (Iohannes Augustus Coruinus sculpsit: Johann August Corvinus hat gestochen). Ieremias Wolff excud. Aug. Vind. (Ieremias Wolff excudit Augustae Vindelicorum: [Der Kupferstecher] Jeremias Wolff verlegte in Augsburg). Kupferstich in sechs Platten: Platte a, Platte b, Platte c, Platte d, Platte e, Platte 5(?).

Kellen 285; Niet in Buisman; Klaversma/Hannema-Luyken, nr. 1047. [2] Buisman 2047. [3] Buisman 2154, zonder verblijfplaats.

Back with nerves decorated. As Exhibit morocco tobacco.

Fine. chez François Sébastien Offray, A Avignon 1716, Un vol. in Folio (36 x 23 cm), relié. - First Edition. Title page red and black. Full sheepskin marbled contemporary; Back to nerves tooled, red morocco title, roulette borders. Some scratches on the flat; two corners bare; a slight lack of bottom joint. Important and unusual story of the founding of the Latin churches and religious orders worldwide, the author even including India and America. In France, the author sets the story in all provinces and cities. At the same time this story doubles as a geographical interest, the author never failing to locate and describe the location of the birth of an order or a church, it is also a history of the saints and history everything short of each country, region or city; even heraldic appearance is far from being neglected as rich this autograph dedication of the author. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information! - [FRENCH VERSION FOLLOWS] Edition originale.

A Francfort: Par Jean Savius, 1716. Fine. Par Jean Savius, A Francfort 1716, In-12 (9,5x15,7cm), 2 tomes en 2 volumes reliés. - first edition. Title pages in red and black. Binding of the late eighteenth assigned Derôme Le Jeune., In the blond calf. Back smooth decorated with four finials, castors head and tail. Part of title and volume number morocco beige. Triple framing fillet on plates with angular florets. Inner lace. Contemporary inscription on title-page. 3 volumes bound in 1. ---- Second edition of the Spanish translation of this graphic history covering the years 1657-87 in the reign of the Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I (1658-1705), revised and with additional illustrations. The translator (Ag erina, Belmonte de Miranda, 1657-Rome, 1739), Jesuit, Cardinal, Latinist, teacher, historian and diplomat, was a man on extraordinary talent. The main subject is Leopold's numerous campaigns, both military and diplomatic, against the Turks, French and Spanish. In 1658 he repulsed the Turks, who had attempted an invasion of Hungary. In 1683 the Turks were defeated at the gates of Vienna. The first Spanish edition appeared in Milan, 1696 (with only 22? [or 26] plates), a third was published in Milan, 1734, a fourth in Antwerp, 1735, and a fifth in Milan, 1740. It is interesting that the present edition appeared in the Austrian Netherlands shortly after the conclusion of the War of the Spanish Succession. Many of the fine engravings are accompanied by explanatory text. Subjects depicted on the plates are: Portrait of the Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand I;Portrait of John II Casimire, King of Poland;Portrait of Charles Gustavus, King of Sweden;Portrait of Queen Christina of Sweden; Portrait of general Count Raymondo de Montecucculi;Portrait of Leopold Wilhelm, Archduke of Austria; Battle of Leventz (1664); Battle of St. Gotthard; Portrait of Sultan Suleiman II of Turkey;Portrait of D. Upper jaw of Volume I cracked open. Binding frottée.Cette compilation that tells the hitoire and the establishment of the Inquisition, it works (the second volume is drawn primarily from the book of Dellon: The Inquisition of Goa), sparing nothing of the horrors and torture is the work of the theologian Dupin. The introduction is a denunciation of what the author sees as the national peculiarities which France would be absolutely free, the author recalled that such conduct is inconceivable in the church of Christ, and that we would never such actions against heretics (even in Roman) except in countries of the Inquisition. The whole book is so full of criticism of the methods and actions of the Inquisition, especially in regard to witches, victims of superstitions, censorship of books, Jews, etc. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information!

John Radcliffe (1650-1714) was a successful, Oxford-educated, English physician. He established a large practice at London that was as much a result of his witty conversation as his clinical skill and accurate prognoses, though sometimes his wit seems to have verged on rudeness, especially to his social superiors, and his prognoses were blunt. He became chief physician to the Princess Anne in 1686, after which he was employed professionally by William III, whom he eventually offended. At his death he bequeathed money in trust to Oxford University to build and maintain a library, which was completed in 1747 and still bears his name, and other large sums for charitable use. "This work, edited by one of Kircher's pupils, Johann Stephan Kestler, is a codification of Kircher's observations and experiments across the entire spectrum of his researches in physics. Naturally there are large sections in light and shadow, magnetism, acoustics, and music; but there are also experiments and observations in hydrolics, alchemy, and a myriad of other topics. This compendium was perhaps a response to entreaties from Kircher's fellow scientists, who appreciated his keen observations and experiments but did not care to wade through some 40 volumes to glean them. The book is an example of what Kircher's writings could have been like at the hands of a good editor. Kircher died the year the book was published, and it is uncertain to what extent he was involved in its publication. The Physiologia is not only a measure of Kircher's scientific curiosity and the vast range of his scientific researches, but also a barometer of his age, a catalogue of scientific concern of his time" (Merrill, Kircher, 29). Caillet 5796. NLM (on line), 2371050R. Garrison - M. 580: "Includes the first recorded experiments on hypnotism in animals". First edition. Contemporary vellum, old manuscript title on spine. First edition. This work catalogues the natural history collections of Basil Besler (1561-1629) and his nephew Michael Rupert (1607-1661), both Nuremberg apothecaries. /The collection was one of the first such private museums in Germany. Basil Besler published two rare suites of engravings, in 1616 and 1622, illustrating his cabinet, and Michael Rupert published in 1642 his Gazophylacium rerum naturalium devoted to his own additions to the collection. In addition, he has written a detailed descriptive text and a history of the collection. Six plates, entitled Fructus, show various seeds and fruit; four larger plates follow, one with a Brazilian indian seed-girdle, unusual roots including ginseng, etc, one with a group of aquatic birds, one with birds-of-paradise, toucans and hornbills, and one devoted to unusual animal horns; four plates, entitled Animalia, include an armadillo, crocodiles, an iguana and chameleon, snakes, etc.; these are followed by a larger plate with a hammerhead shark, a dracaena, a ray, etc; six plates, entitled Marina and two Conchilia depict various wonders of the sea, including 3 nautilus shells; a larger plate features various 'Archimboldo' shell grotesques; the remaining 17 plates, 14 of which are entitled Lapides, with two larger untitled plates, are devoted to various stones, minerals, fossils, corals, etc. //Cobres 102 n. 9; Nissen ZBI, 348.

Lipsiae [Leipzig] : Apud Joh. Frid. Gleditsch & Filium, 1716-01-01. Hardcover. Very Good. Jus Feudale tribus libris comprehensum. Fine binding. 4to. Latin. 20 preliminary leaves, 704, [15], 24 pages ; 22 cm. Bound in modern full leather in contemporary style. 4 raised bands. Blind tooling. Gilt lettering on spine label. Fine binding and cover. Marbled end pages. Clean, unmarked pages. Toning. Thomas Craig was a Scottish lawyer, jurist and poet. He probably started work on Jus Feudale in the late 1590s and there is considerable internal evidence to suggest that much of it was written in 1600. There was at least one revision, probably in 1606. The culmination of a lifetime's professional involvement in Scottish law, it was enriched by frequent allusions to practice. Written in admirably clear Latin, it is a typical humanistic work in its classical quotations and references and historical and philological discussions. That it originated in a patriotic concern for Scots law is revealed by Craig's stated Ciceronian aim of reducing that law to an ordered science, thereby making it easier for students to learn. He achieves this admirably, writing an accessible, learned, and well-structured work, in which he stresses the feudal origins of much Scots law (and English law too), and from that basis explains and expounds his subject in a logical fashion. He ultimately validates Scots law and its practices in the law of nature and nations in a way that to some extent anticipates Grotius. Craig's systematic account of feudal land law and its principles influenced numerous later Scottish writers, but also had an impact on English legal writers and on English understanding of the history of the common law.         Trivia: or, The Art of Walking the Streets of London

1716. GAY, John. Trivia: or the Art of Walking the Streets of London. [4], 80, [12] pp. 8vo., 195 x 120 mm, full nineteenth-century maroon morocco by Riviere. London: Bernard Lintott, [1716]. First Edition of Gay's poem based upon the Georgics of Virgil. "Though there had been imitations of Virgil's didactics, there had been nothing of the scope, nor any that had hit upon the real idea, of Trivia: to imitate in mock, not just one or another of Virgil's prescriptions, but the entire work" (Dearing). The title of the work signifies streets- the avenues of London, both grand and squalid, portrayed so vividly in the poem. In Gay's interpretation of Virgil's work, the harmonious balance between country and city life is revealed as a hopeless dream: modern urban existence, with all of its defects, was now the dominant mode for humanity. One of only 250 large paper copies. Slight crack at head of spine, else a fine copy. Rothschild 914. Hayward 142. Foxon G82. V.A. Dearing (ed.), John Gay. Poetry and Prose 546.

Decii Junii Juvenalis et Auli Persii Flacci Satyrae

London - Jacob Tonson and John Watts, 1716 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A scarceearly eighteenth-century copy of Juvenal's Satires. Featuring an engraved frontispiece. In Latin. With an armorial bookplate to the front pastedown. The Satires are a collection of satirical poems by the Latin author Juvenal written in the late 1st and early 2nd centuries AD. Juvenal is credited with sixteen known poems divided among five books; all are in the Roman genre of satire, which comprised a wide-ranging discussion of society and social mores in dactylic hexameter. These five books were discrete works, and there is no reason to assume that they were published at the same time or that they are identical in theme or in approach. The poems are not individually titled, but translators have often added titles for the convenience of readers. Condition: In a full speckled calf binding. Externally, sound with some rubbing to the extremities. Spine label missing. Joints cracked but holding firm. Internally, firmly bound. Slight age toning butvery clean throughout. Ink number to front pastedown. The top corner of the front free endpaper has been clipped. Overall: VERY GOOD..

Jushikei Hakki [trans.: Expression of the Fourteen Meridians]

16 full-page woodcut illus. in the text. 56 folded leaves. Three vols. in one. 8vo, orig. wrappers (rubbed, one leaf with about five characters obscured due to a stain), orig. block printed title label on upper cover (rubbed & frayed), newly stitched in the oriental style. Tokyo: 1716. An early Japanese edition of one of the most important Chinese texts on acupuncture. Katsu "was a Chinese physician whose years are uncertain but who lived prior to the time of the Ming dynasty. He wrote a book on the introduction of the moxa system into Japan from China, the original Japanese edition of which was published in 1684 with the title Jushikei (or Jushikyo) hakki [Mestler is in error here; there were earlier editions]...A theoretical discussion, by Katsu, chiefly on acupuncture but equally applicable to moxa, not on how to cure but on the more fundamental nature of the subject, comprised the first part of that work. The first part discussed the fundamental belief of the Chinese and Japanese in a relationship between the internal organs and their diseases, and curative treatment for them at specific sites on the outside of the body. The second part, written by an unknown co-author, was subtitled Juishikei ketsu chi-ho and gave practical instruction. Several illustrations in this work show relationships between moxa or acupuncture sites and specific internal organs (e.g. between the hands and the lungs). Two drawings are especially interesting as showing external measurements of the human body, anterior and posterior aspects, referring to differences between lean and fat individuals and the influence of aging."-Mestler, "A Galaxy of Old Japanese Medical Books With Miscellaneous Notes on Early Medicine in Japan. Part II. Acupuncture and Moxibustion. Bathing, Balneotherapy and Massage. Nursing, Pediatrics and Hygiene. Obstetrics and Gynecology," pp. 473-74. The sixteen full-page woodcut illustrations explain the centers for acupuncture. The text, in three parts or volumes, concerns Yin and Yang through the arms and legs; circulation of the breath of life through the fourteen meridians; and the eight vital blood vessels. Very nice copy with some relatively inoffensive worming touching a few characters and images. .
