REASONS HUMBLY OFFER'D FOR AMENDING AND EXPLAINING AN ACT, MADE IN THE TENTH YEAR OF HER MAJESTY'S REIGN, INTITULED, AN ACT FOR REGULATING, IMPROVING AND ENCOURAGING THE WOOLLEN-MANUFACTURE OF MIXT OR MEDLY BROAD CLOTH, &c. [caption title]

[London? 1714].. Small folio broadsheet. [1]p. plus printed docket title on verso. Dbd. Early folds and early stab holes in left margin. Some foxing. Very good. An early British political leaflet lobbying for change in regulations on the wool textile industry. The petitioners ask that Parliament require that "the Length and Breadth of all mixt and medley Broad Cloth, may not be ascertain'd at the Place of Making, but at the Place of Sale; where both Seller and Buyer may see that equal Justice is done between them." The document is among the earliest examples of commercial lobbying literature, which first began proliferating in the lobby of the House of Commons around the time of the accession of King George I and the British general election of 1715. ESTC records copies at five British institutions and one American (Harvard) HANSON 1969.

REASONS HUMBLY OFFERED FOR PASSING THE BILL FOR THE BETTER PREVENTING THE COVERING ALIENS GOODS IMPORTED [caption title]

[London. 1714].. Small folio broadsheet. [1]p. plus printed docket title on verso. Dbd. Early folds and early stab holes in left margin. Mild foxing. Very good. An early British petitionary leaflet calling for greater enforcement of customs laws for imported goods. The author charges that most consignments of foreign goods are now being made to "Naturalized Foreigners and Unfreemen," who are not under the same obligations as Freemen, who state in their oath "not to Colour of Cover the Goods of Aliens." If "no Remedey be given," it is argued, "all Persons will be discouraged from taking their Freedoms, and few will be left of Substance to perform the necessary Service in the Government of [London]." The document is among the earliest examples of lobbying literature, which first began proliferating during the major changes in British government in the mid-1710s. ESTC records four copies, at the British Library, Oxford, National Library of Wales, and California State Library. HANSON 1980.

Trimmed close, with loss of almost all the first line of caption title. Minor foxing. Overall very good. A scarce British leaflet petitioning Parliament for stricter measuring standards on cloth. The authors, writing on behalf of British woolen-drapers, ask that the French method of water measure replace the less accurate method of measuring cloth by the yard. Additional regulations relating to the industry are also requested, including the reinstatement of a requirement that "all Servant Maids, &c. be injoyned to wear the Woollen Manufactures of this Kingdom." The document, printed in the final year of Queen Anne's reign, is among the earliest examples of lobbying literature, which first began proliferating during the major changes in British government in the mid-1710s. ESTC records four copies, at the British Library, Gloucestershire Record Office, Oxford, and National Library of Wales. HANSON 1964.

Binding tight and firm. A very good copy. Daniel Beeckman was captain of an English merchant ship trading for the East India Company and here relates his observations on a trip made in 1713. The work is described by Cox as "an unusually interesting and well - written volume of travels. On the way from Borneo the author visited the Cape of Good Hope, and gives a lengthy account of the country and the Hottentots. In his description of Borneo he speaks of the 'Oran - Ootan' the most remarkable animal there". (Travel, Volume I, page 286). This was the first European reference to the Orang - utan which is depicted in one of the plates. Marquard Gude (1635-1689) was a German classical scholar, most famous for his collection of Greek and Latin inscriptions. His correspondence, here edited by Dutch classical scholar Pieter Burmann, is the most important authority for the events of Gude's life, besides containing valuable information on the learning of the times. Claude Sarrau (c. 1600-1651) was a French writer whose letters were first published by his son in the 1650s; Burmann reprinted them as the second part of this volume. Some Latin verses on a medal of Queen Christina of Sweden won Sarrau the special benevolence of that lady (see Part 2 p. 230).

Opera omnia, tam antea sparsim edita.Lausanne & Geneva: Marci-Michaelis Bousquet, 1742. First edition.

An exceptionally fine and complete copy with both the portraits which often lack, from the collection of Robert Honeyman. "Bernoulli published only one book, Théorie de la manoeuvre des vaisseaux (1714) and apart from this, his dissertation De motu musculorum (1694) and one or two minor pieces, all his work was contributed to journals (189 papers are collected here) or were first published in these volumes, i.e. 59 of his lectures and the Hydraulica in volume IV [appearing here for the first time in print], which was written in competition with his son Daniel." (Roger Gaskell).

❧Honeyman 293 (this copy, sold for $1,500 in 1978); Norman 217; Stanitz 55; Arnoud de Vitry 55.

"The first volume is primarily devoted to problems in geometry and the early calculus, but also contains papers on muscular mechanics, the resistance of solids, and a geometrical demonstration of the motion of pendulums and projectiles in resisting and unresisting media. Volumes two and three are almost totally devoted to problems of mechanics, the first of these containing his theoretical essay on the maneuvering of vessels and related papers, as well as numerous contributions on the analysis of trajectories. His discourse on the laws governing the communication of movement opens volume three, which also contains his essay on celestial mechanics. The last volume contains contributions on the curvature of elastic plates, his mechanico-dynamical propositions, and problems in dynamics. Most important, its appearance in this volume represents the first printing of the Hydraulica, which was written in competition with his son, Daniel.

"Johann Bernoulli 'proposed the problem of the brachystochrone (the Bernoullis' term - the curve of quickest descent joining two points), to which Galileo had given an incorrect solution: he solved it himself (the answer is the cycloid) in 1697. It is due to his work on this problem and that of finding the curve of given perimeter which will enclose the greatest area that he is considered one of the founders of the calculus of variations. He is also remembered for his work on the exponential calculus; on geodesics; on complex numbers; and his treatment of trigonometry as a branch of the calculus.' (DSB). He also first enunciated the principle of virtual work and was the first to denote the accelerating effect of gravity by the sign g, thus arriving at the formula v square equals 2gh. Todhunter and Pearson note Bernoulli's treatment of the cause of elasticity in his Discours sur les loix de la communication du movement (1727) and his theory of 'captive aether.' Timoshenko remarks on his formulation of the principle of virtual displacements in a letter to Varignon." (Bibliotheca Mechanica).. 4 volumes 4to (247 x 196 mm) . Fully complete: vol. I: pp. [4] [i] ii-xxiv, [1-2] 3-563 [1:blank], title in red and black, 25 engraved plates, including a portrait of Frederick III of Prussia engraved by G.F. Schmidt, a portrait of Bernoulli by Schmidt after J. Ruber, and 23 folding engraved plates numbered i-xxiii; vol. II: pp. [2], [1-3] 4-620, 17 folding engraved plates numbered xxiv-xl; vol. III: pp. [2], [1-3] 4-563 [1:blank], 36 folding engraved plates numbered xli-lxxvi; vol. IV: [1-5] 6-588, 15 folding engraved plates numbered lxxvii-xci. The Publick Spirit of the Whigs: Set forth in their Generous Encouragement of the Author of the Crisis: with some Observations on the Seasonableness, Candor, Erudition, and Style of that Treatise

London: Printed for John Morphew, 1714. First edition, first issue. [2], 45 pp. 1 vols. 4to. Modern marbled boards. Title somewhat spotted and with wormhole through first few leaves, slight waterstaining in blank margins to text; otherwise very good. The scarce first issue of one of Swift's most effective political pamphlets, written on behalf of the government against Steele's The Crisis. Swift's aspersions on the Scottish peers made the Lords seek special means to suppress his work, and it was reprinted with the offending passages removed. His remarks here make it clear why the suppression was sought: in reply to Steele's note that the Kingdom of Scotland had many nobles, Swift chips in: "They had indeed; and to that we owe one of the great and necessary Evils of the Union upon the Foot it now stands. Their Nobility is indeed so numerous, that the whole Revenues of their Country would be hardly able to maintain them according to the Dignity of their Titles; and what is infinitely worse, they are never likely to be Extinct till the last Period of all Things ... I could Point out some with great Titles, who affected to appear very vigorous for Dissolving the Union, though their whole Revenues before that Period would have ill maintained a Welch Justice of the Peace; and have since gathered more Money than ever any Scotchmen, who had not travell'd, could form an Idea of."Very scarce on the market.

The Third and last Volume of the History of the Lives and Robberies Of the most noted Highway-Men [highwaymen], Foot-Pads [footpads], House-Breakers [housebreakers], Shop-Lifts, And other Thieves and Murderers of both Sexes, in and about London [Volume 3 only: UNRECORDED supplementary volume to the 2 vol first edition of 1714]

London: Printed for J. Morphew and A. Dodd, 1714. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. London: Printed for J. Morphew near Stationers-Hall, and A. Dodd without Temple Bar, 1714. 12mo. xxiv,287,[1]pp. §Full title reads: The Third and last Volume of the History of the Lives and Robberies Of the most noted Highway-Men, Foot-Pads, House-Breakers, Shop-Lifts, And other Thieves and Murderers of both Sexes, in and about London, and other Places of great Britain, for above 50 Years last past. And wherein is not only discover'd the most secret and barbarous Murders, and unparallell'd Robberies formerly done; but also an Account of above an hundred Murders and Robberies committed by Criminals executed at the Assizes last held throughout the Kingdom. With certain Rules how all Persons shall escape being robb'd for the future. By Capt. Alexander Smith. §This third volume NOT IN ESTC. The work (revised in 1719 under the amended title 'A Compleat History of the Lives and Robberies Of the most Notorious Highway-Men...') is known in Morphew and Dodd's two volume first edition of 1714; reprinted the same year. (ESTC & other records are confusing but seemingly three 2 vol. first edition sets are held: Bodleian, Bristol, & William Andrews Clark; and two copies of the 1714 reprint: BL and Oxford, one of these perhaps lacking a volume). §The volume offered appears to be a unique example of an accompanying third volume of the same year. Comparison (not exhaustive) with the text of the two volume 1719 edition indicates that the contents are predominantly included in volume II of the latter: pages 1-284 (line 5) are in vol. II (1719) pages 109-319; pages 284 (line 6) to 286 (line 18) are in vol. II (1719) pages 363-364; and part of the preface is the same as that of vol. II (1719). An Act for Providing a Publick Reward for such Person or Persons as shall Discover the Longitude at Sea [In a volume combining parliamentary acts for the twelfth year of Queen Anne's reign, with brief section for first year of George I]

London: John Baskett, 1714. Folio, with 4 pp. table; bound with 22 other parliamentary acts for the session in contemporary plain calf, brown label, slightly rubbed, in very good condition. The longitude reward announced. The important first publication of the Longitude Act: 'nothing is so much wanted and desired at Sea, as the Discovery of the Longitude'. The act - more often seen in disbound form - is here in its appropriate context in the full printing of the twenty-three Acts of the first session of parliament in 1714. Other acts in the session are of some interest: for example one act removes the "ad valorem" tax on imported books and prints, another is for "Encouraging the Tobacco-Trade",The discovery of an accurate method of measuring longitude was recognised as fundamental to the naval expansion of Britain, especially after disasters such as the loss of Admiral Shovell's squadron on the Isles of Scilly in 1707. The Act was promulgated in July 1714 and is here published by the then Queen's printer John Baskett, as 'An act for providing a publick reward for such person or persons as shall discover the longitude at sea' (pp. [353]-357). This led to the formation of the Commissioners for the Discovery of the Longitude at Sea, otherwise known as the Board of Longitude. One of the first known examples of a government-sponsored award to stimulate scientific research, the board was given the authority to award a first prize of £20,000 to any person who submitted a proposal capable of measuring longitude within half a degree of a great circle, as well as lesser awards and small grants.A committee was quickly formed, with experts such as Newton and Halley heavily involved. Although several proposals were made, for two decades none were even considered likely enough to require the board formally convening. It was not until the trial of Harrison's first chronometer, H-1, that the board first met.

This voyage was made by the Dutch painter Cornelis de Bruin (as on title page), or de Bruyn (as in the portrait) (1652-1727). He went by sea from Amsterdam along the coast of Norway to Archangel above the polar circle, and travelled by river and overland southwards through Russia and the Caspian Sea, from there over land to Persia, the Gulf and by ship again onward to Batavia (now Jakarta), back to Persia, and across the Mediterranean homewards. It is an extensive work important to naval and travel history, and includes beautiful large panoramic views of, for instance, Archangel, Moscow, and "Spahan" (= Isfahan), some are impressively long when unfolded. Most are as stated in the title, from drawings made on the spot by de Bruin himself. The work was dedicated to Anton Ulrich, Duke of Brunswyk and Lunenburg. This edition is identical to the 1711 edition published for the author by Willem and David Goerree. Two book plates of former private owners on front paste-down, one small previous owner's stamp on first blank, old Japanese paper reinforcements to the outer edge of the front flyleaf and first blank, tiny weak bookseller's stamp in title page lower margin, a pencil annotation below the portrait of De Bruin, otherwise clean.
