[GROUP OF THREE MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENTS RELATING TO THE ACTIVITY OF FRENCH CANADIAN AND PENNSYLVANIA FUR TRADER AND EXPLORER PETER BISAILLON]

New York & Philadelphia, 1714. Folio. Old fold lines. Light wear and soiling, earliest document more heavily so. Good plus. Three significant early manuscript documents relating to French Canadian trapper and Indian trader and interpreter Peter Bisaillon and his trading activities in North America, including an official license from the Province of Pennsylvania. Bisaillon (1662-1742) - whose name appears in the documents spelled variously Besallion, Bizaillon, and Beselion - came to Canada with his four brothers in the late 17th century. He was part of Henri Tonti's expedition down the Mississippi that went in search of La Salle in 1686. Two or three years later he moved to Pennsylvania, where he engaged in business with Jacques Le Tort as an employee of Dr. Daniel Coxe near present-day Spring City. Coxe ceased business in 1692, but Bisaillon and his associates continued to trade in the wilds of Pennsylvania and the western provinces, maintaining ties with various Indian tribes and Canadian trappers. Jealousy and competition within the fur trade and between the colonies were fierce, and Bisaillon frequently ran into trouble when his competitors' patrons were in power. In 1712, Bisaillon finally found some measure of security in the patronage and employ of James Logan, the secretary of the province, who was consolidating control over both political power and the Indian trade. This endeavor would eventually help precipitate the French and Indian War, as Pennsylvania challenged France for control over the trade in the Ohio country. The first document chronologically is a letter written to Bisaillon by a young girl claiming to be his daughter. It is dated at New York, August 27, 1702 and is addressed "Beloved father." Jahanna Beselion, who makes her mark by her name at the end of the letter, pleads with Bisaillon to acknowledge her in some way, as her mother has given her away. She writes, with spelling as it appears in the letter: "Beloved father, My only desier is, that my dier father would be pleast to remember me, for I understand that you are my only father, my mother Jannaihe Scoute shee taks noe care of me for shee gave me away hwen I was a litle child to Anna Couvenowen, whar I have bin these 12 yeare and a halfe and have bin well brought up and mantand that I can do in the house wat belongs to it. Now my only desier is that my beloved father would be pleas to remember his diere child, and sand me few word back again that should mak me glad and satisfigd in my mind that I had a father in life; my homley respect to my diere father for ever Petter Beselion." The second document is a bond release between "John Treson of Philadelphia Skinner" and Bisaillon. The document, dated June 27, 1712 and signed with Treson's mark and in the presence of two witnesses, releases "Peter Besallion of Philadelphia Indian Trader" from any judgments, transactions, quarrels, controversies, trespasses, or any other damages and demands which might be brought by Treson or his heirs. Treson and Bisaillon clearly had some sort of partnership or business accord. Bisaillon was licensed by the colony of Pennsylvania, although as a French national and Roman Catholic he was considered an alien. Through his position with Logan he maintained significant trading activities among the Conestoga Indians, the Delaware, and other tribes in the area. The third piece is perhaps the most interesting of the three, being an official Pennsylvania colonial license issued to Bisaillon as an Indian Trader in the province. It reads: "By the Commissioners of Property. We doe hereby authorize and allow Peter Bizaillon Indian Trader to seat him self at Peshlang or any other Indian Town or Place on Sasquehannah within this Province & to erect such buildingd as are necessary for his Trade, and to inclose and improve such quantities of land as he shall think fitt for the accommodation of his family and creatures not exceeding two hundred and fifty acres to be held during his Trade there or till further order shall be given herein by the Proprietor or his Commissioners provided alwayes that the said Peter shall not act or proceed in any thing under colour hereof but by the free leave & approbation of the Indians amongst whom he dwells or resides. Given under our hands and seal of the Province at Philadelphia the 15th day of October AD 1714." It is signed by Richard Hill, Isaac Norris, and James Logan, and bears the paper and wax seal of the colony. A collection of fascinating early documents relating to the life of this important trapper and trader in early frontier Pennsylvania.

JUDAS THE TRAITOR HUNG UP IN CHAINS, TO GIVE WARNING TO PROFESSORS, THAT THEY BEWARE OF WORLDLY-MINDEDNESS, AND HYPOCRISY: A DISCOURSE CONCLUDING WITH A DIALOGUE; PREACH'D AT YORK IN NEW-ENGLAND

Boston, 1714. 12mo. Contemporary calf over birch boards. Upper portion of front board lacking (calf intact). Worn at edges, head and foot of spine heavily so. Modern bookplate inside front cover, contemporary ownership inscription on verso of titlepage and final leaves. Light to moderate foxing and soiling. Six leaves with some worming in the top margin, affecting a few letters in headlines. Good. The second recorded and most complete copy of this printing of Samuel Moodey's sermon on Judas Iscariot and the evils of hypocrisy. The work was written for young people. Samuel Moodey (1676-1747) was a minister in York, Maine, and a Harvard graduate of the class of 1697. Three editions of this work were issued in Boston in 1714, with imprints by B. Green, T. Green, and the present item - whose imprint was uncertain before now, as the only other copy extant, at the American Antiquarian Society, lacks the titlepage and numerous other leaves. Of those three editions, seven total copies are noted in ESTC. This edition was previously attributed to the Boston booksellers Nicholas Buttolph, Eleazer Phillips, and Nicholas Boone, since the advertisements at the end are primarily for their establishments. Incredibly rare and highly desirable in such lovely contemporary condition. Practically unique.

The Tragedy of Jane Shore Written in Imitation of Shakespear's style

Printed for Bernard Lintott, [1714], London - pp. [9], 2-63, [1]. First Edition. Bound in modern 3/4 cloth with marbled boards. Author, title, and date in gilt on spine. New plain end papers. Some minor tanning on title page and final page. One inch damp stain lower right corner throughout. Previous binder's stitch marks visible left margin. Otherwise, pages are very clean with a fox mark here or there. Book now protected in mylar. Nicholas Rowe is considered the first editor of Shakespeare and published the first 18th Century edition of Shakespeare in six volumes in 1709. "The Tragedy of Jane Shore" professedly an imitation of Shakespeare's style, was played at Drury Lane with Mrs. Oldfield in the title role in 1714. Running for nineteen nights, it kept the stage longer than any other of Rowe's works. Jane Shore is frequently mentioned in William Shakespeare's play, Richard III. Jane Shore was quite the figure in 15th Century English history. Jane was known as "The Rose of London" for her beauty. She was a mistress of King Edward IV among others and even spent some time in prison. This is a rare, not often seen, first edition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

TO THE RIGHT HONOURABLE, AND HONOURABLE, THE LORDS SPIRITUAL AND TEMPORAL, AND COMMONS, IN PARLIAMENT ASSEMBLED THE HUMBLE PETITION OF HENRY PICKWORTH, OF NEW SLEEFORD IN THE COUNTY OF LINCOLN; IN BEHALF OF HIMSELF AND MANY OTHERS OF HIS LONG MISLED FRIENDS, CALL'D QUAKERS; OVER WHOM HE HATH BEEN ELECTED OVERSEER AND ELDER, ACCORDING TO THE DISCIPLINE PRACTISED AMONG THEM [caption title]

[London. 1714].. Broadsheet, 14 x 9 inches. [1]p., plus printed docket title on verso. Dbd. Early folds and early stab holes in left margin. Small portion of inner margin excised, with no loss to text. Some foxing. Very good. Henry Pickworth (1673?-1738?) was an English Quaker who, in 1701, challenged the Quaker apostate Francis Bugg to visit New Sleaford, Lincolnshire, and debate him at a public conference. Bugg accepted and prevailed before the judges and clergymen assembled, which led to the public burning of two Quaker books and the publication of numerous pamphlets attacking Bugg by Pickworth. As the controversy died down, however, Pickworth was won over by Bugg and soon began writing against the Quakers and attending the annual Friends' meeting in London to present his protests and testimonies. Eventually, in June 1714, the Lincoln quarterly meeting disowned him. In this rare and historically noted petition, Pickworth lobbies Parliament to grant him another public conference in Lincolnshire, this time against the Quakers of his home meeting. He asks that members of the Lincoln meeting be convened "to one against me, in order to their Defences, from the Charges of Error, Heresy, Uncharity, Falshood, Evasion, Inconsistency, Innovation, Imposition, Infidelity, Hypocrisy, Pride, Railery, Apostasy, Perjury, Idolatry, villainy, Blasphemy, Abomination, Confusion, and worse than Turkish Tyranny in their Church Capacity." He was denied and subsequently issued a book with a title based on the series of invectives above (itself printed earlier in a half-sheet Pickworth published in 1711). In addition to being an important artifact of early 18th-century Quaker history, the document is among the first examples of lobbying literature, which first began proliferating during the major changes in British government in the mid- 1710s. ESTC records four copies in the U.K. and one in the U.S., at Haverford College. SMITH, FRIENDS' BOOKS II, p.416. DNB XV, p.1133.

THE PAPER-MAKERS CASE, HUMBLY OFFER'D TO THE CONSIDERATION OF THE HONOURABLE HOUSE OF COMMONS [caption title]

[London. 1714].. Small folio broadsheet. [1]p. plus printed docket title on verso. Ornamental initial. Dbd. Early folds and early stab holes in left margin. Trimmed close, with slight loss to the first line of caption title and docket title, minor foxing; overall very good. A scarce petitionary leaflet published on behalf of the English paper making industry. The authors argue that a recent duty on cards has "hindered the Consumption of many thousand Reams of Paper," harming the livelihoods of the approximately 40,000 poor who are maintained by the gathering of rags used to make the paper. A proposed bill adding duties to printed books, they argue, will further exacerbate the problem. The document is among the earliest examples of commercial lobbying literature, which first began proliferating during the major changes in British government in the mid- 1710s. ESTC lists copies at the Birmingham Central Libraries, British Library, National Library of Wales, Oxford, and Columbia. HANSON 2057. ESTC T170344.

        Tabulae anatomicae

Rome: Francisco Gonzaga, 1714. Most Scientific Renaissance AnatomistEustachi, Bartolomeo (c. 1505-74). Tabulae anatomicae. . . . Edited by Giovanni Maria Lancisi (1654-1720). Folio. xliv, 115, [1], [14, index & errata]pp., another copy of errata leaf laid in. 47 engraved plates prepared by Giulio de?Musi under the direction of Eustachi and his assistant Pier Matteo Pini, engraved title vignette by Petrus Leo Gherrinus. Laid in is one of the 2 engraved graduated scales originally provided on a plate inserted after p. xliv; this plate not present in this copy. Rome: Francisco Gonzaga, 1714. 378 x 257 mm. Vellum ca. 1714, title inked on spine, splits at spine extremities, inner front hinge cracked. Minor foxing and toning, but very good. Extensive notes in Latin in an early hand on several leaves and on laid-in sheets. From the library of Herbert M. Evans (1882-1971), with his bookplate. First Edition. Had Eustachi?s full series of 47 anatomical copperplates been published at the time of their completion in 1552, Eustachi would have ranked with Vesalius as a founder of modern anatomy. As it happened, only the first eight were issued during Eustachi?s lifetime (in his Opuscula anatomica [1564]), while the remaining 39 were lost for over a century after his death. Early in the 18th century, Eustachi?s copperplates were discovered in the Vatican Library and presented by Pope Clement XI to his physician, Giovanni Maria Lancisi, who published them with his own notes in 1714. Eustachi, considered to have been ?the most scientific anatomist of the High Renaissance? (Lilly), was the first to describe the adrenal gland, the abducens nerve, the thoracic duct and the valvulae venae (Eustachian valve) in the right ventricle of the heart. He was the first to accurately describe the uterus, as well as the first since classical times to give an account of the Eustachian tube. His plates are remarkable for their advanced anatomical knowledge, superior at times even to that in Vesalius?s Fabrica; indeed, Eustachi was critical of the Vesalian illustrations, and corrected some of their errors. Eustachi had prepared this series of plates to illustrate a projected book entitled De dissensionibus ac controversiis anatomicis, the text of which was lost after his death. The plates are strikingly modern, produced without the conventional 16th-century decorative accompaniments, and framed on three sides by numbered rules giving coordinates by which any part of the body could be precisely located on the plate; this device eliminated the need for identifying marks within the plate (the graduated scales were provided by the publisher for use as a location aid). The images are generic figures, composites of many anatomical observations, and are mathematically as well as representationally exact. This copy is from the library of Herbert M. Evans, best known as the discoverer of vitamin E and human growth hormone. Choulant / Frank, pp. 200-202. Garrison-Morton (online) 391. Lilly, Notable Medical Books, p. 41. Norman 740.
