Bel exemplaire. 1 vol. 12mo. 1 frontispiece, 7 plates. 19th century calf. First edition of this very scarce account by a Dominican missionary in Guinea. According to Numa Broc: The best account in French for this country. The account is interesting for its anthropological dimension but also because it was a country that French wanted to use for trade. Fine copy. Boucher de la Richarderie, IV, 143-144. - Chadenat, nº 3810.

Le Hay & Duchange and Collombat Paris -15 1714 - Folio. Engraved calligraphic title page, 102 engraved plates, all captioned and numbered 1-100, with 2 unnumbered (3 double-page), letterpress title of the Explication, [iv], 26 pp., engr. music leaf; title and following 2 plates somewhat soiled, music plate slightlywater-stained, eighteenth-century half calf, slightly rubbed and stained, corners worn. This important work forms the "basic prototype for Levantine costume plates" (Atabey). In addition to the sixty or so plates depicting Turkish Court, noble, military and other costume, the work illustrates the regional, religious or national costume of several other parts of the Turkish Empire. These include Greeks (10); Albanians (2); Jews (3); Hungarians (2); Wallachians (3); Bulgarians (2); Crimean Tartars (1); Armenians (5); Persians (2); Indians (2); Arabs (1); Barbary Coast (4); and Moors (1). The plates for this work were commissioned by Charles de Ferriol (1652-1722), the French ambassador to the Porte between 1699 and 1709. The plates were engraved after drawings by the Flemish artist J.B. van Mour, who lived and worked in Constantinople for many years during the first part of the eighteenth century. It has been suggested that van Mour came to Constantinople with the entourage of Ferriol in 1699. When the paintings were complete, Ferriol helped Le Hay to publish the present prints of the pictures. Le Hay's work was an instant success and the plates quickly became the principal source of turqueries for artists and publishers throughout Europe. In recognition of van Mour's talents, he was granted the unique post of 'Peintre ordinaire du Roi en Levant' in 1725. Van Mour's paintings (and the plates that derive from them) show Constantinople as a cosmopolitan place with Muslims and non-Muslims uniting in shared 'Ottoman' pleasures. Armenians, Franks, Greeks and Persians are shown drinking coffee, playing mankeh (a version of backgammon), or making music.

A handsome ‘Sammelband’ containing 3 important horticultural works of the late baroque period. I: The gardener Hesse (fl. 1700), after much travelling, worked for the Count of Nassau and others. The editor of the ‘Garten-Lust’, a certain Phytologus whose identity is not known, also edited Hesse’s Teutscher Gärtner. The present work is divided into 4 parts: the first deals principally with the laying out and cultivation of the garden; the second part contains descriptions of ornamental plants, vegetables and herbs; the third part instructs on tree-planting and nurseries; and the fourth part (pp372-389) discusses a pharmaceutical garden. Güntz III, 26. See Seguier, p370 (edition of 1696). II: A supplement to the above work dealing specifically with the flower-garden. The identities of its French author and of the translator are both unknown. The preface is dated 1705, and the treatise gives detailed descriptions and lengthy lists of varieties of so-called ‘florists’ flowers’ contemporarily available, particularly anemones, carnations and tulips; they are variously classified for useful reference - according to colour, shape and size of bloom and leaf. See Seguier, p370 (edition of 1705). III: First German edition. Liger (1658-1717) is known for his many useful agricultural and garden books which ran to several editions. Apart from selective descriptions of flowers and their treatment, the work contains several sections on the art of garden design. The ‘Nützlichen Garten Gespräche’ (Useful conversations about gardening) on pp583-764 are a translation of the Jardinier Solitaire by F. Gentil. Fromm 15270. Seguier, p377 (giving later date of 1716). None of the three titles are listed by Nissen and Pritzel. An early ownership entry of a German gardener (‘Daniel Beiseler’) on front flyleaf, recto.         Pal.zo del N.H. Grimani Burgunzi al Dolo.

1714. Incisione in rame di T.G. Becsch mm 324x210. Blunt: "delightful views of the gardens and palaces of Germany, Austria and Italy"; Ottimo esemplare.

A New and Correct Map of the World Projected upon the Plane of the Horizon laid down from the Newest Discoveries and most Exact Observations By C. Price Sold by G Willdey.

1714. Copperplate, original colour, mm 635x995. A rare british double - hemispherical world map depicted in an unusual oblique projecton with London in the center of the eastern hemisphere, practically dividing the world into land and marine hemispheres. This innovative map was first published by Price with the new partnership of Willdey and Brandreth, probably in 1711. In other words, the map was created as part of a particular publishing venture that was specifically intended to expand the British market for printed maps. The Price - Willdey - Brandreth partnership ended just two years later. Willdey took control of the printing plates for Price's world map and reissued it with substantial changes. Willdey had allegorical depictions of the four continents added across the top, perhaps in an effort to expand the map's market; the allegories were designed and engraved by H. Terrason (fl. 1713 - 1717). Willdey also had Terrason fill the bottom of the map with a large number of icons depicting the other commodities that Willdey sold, like telescopes, a clock, a globe, an armillary spheres, compasses, a gun, a microscope, and a barometer as well as scissors, knives, buckles, monocles, spectacles, tweezers, and razors. The plates were eventually bought in 1749 or 1750 by Thomas Jefferys (1719 - 1771), who continued to realize a return on his investment by selling impressions of the map, although with the icons of the commodities removed. Very good condition. Minor reinforcements at folds and margins.

Legatura coeva in mezza pelle e piatti marmorizzati. Cfr. Heirs of Hippocrates (324): "Had the plates been published at the time they were executed, Eustachi would undoubtedly have ranked with Vesalius as a founder of modern anatomical studies" .

Beck, J.A. Auctore Isaaco Newtono, Equite Aurato. Edition Ultima, Auctior et Emendatior.

Sumptibus Societatis, 1714. In 4° (mm 260x205). Pagg. (28), 484, (8). "Map taken from the ""Mercurio Geografico"", a collection of maps printed in Rome between 1660 and 1730 by De Rossi.

Amsterdam, David Mortier, 1714. - 12mo. 498, (6) pp. Title page printed in red and black. With separate engr. title page (counted in the pagination), engr. title vignette, 18 folding engr. plates and one engraving in the text. Contemp. full morocco, covers and spine gilt with giltstamped green spine label. Leading edges gilt, gilt inner dentelle, marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Beautiful French edition of Sir Paul Rycaut‘s famous Turkish chronicle: a page-for-page reprint of the - probably pirated - third edition in French, which had appeared at Amsterdam (under the imprint of Abraham Wolfgangk) in 1670. The 1714 edition, not noted in the relevant bibliographies, omits Rycaut's name, citing only that of the translator, but without the words "traduit de l'Anglois", thus falsely suggesting that the translator Briot is the author. "This work is regarded as one of the best of its kind with respect to the religious and military state of Turkey" (Cox). "[Rycaut's] most important work [.] presents an animated and, on the whole, faithful picture of Turkish manners" (DNB). "Provides an account of the society and political system of the Ottoman Empire with unprecedented thoroughness" (cf. Osterhammel, Die Entzauberung Asiens, 32). "An extremely important and influential work, which provides the fullest account of Ottoman affairs during the 17th century [.] Rycaut was appointed consul in Smyrna, where he resided for eleven years. His information on the Ottoman Empire was taken from several sources: original records, and from a Polish resident of some nineteen years at the Ottoman court" (Blackmer). The attractive engravings depict dignitaries and persons of various ranks in their costumes (several on Arabian horses), also including the illustration of a turban (in the letterpress on p. 115). A beautifully bound copy of a rare and appealingly produced edition. Provenance: removed from the library of the Talhouët family at the Château de la Lambardais in Brittany (armorial stamp to front flyleaf). OCLC 69067803. Cf. Weber II, 330f. Aboussouan 806f.         THE CASE OF BRAMBER-ELECTION, WHICH WAS ON THURSDAY THE 27th OF JANUARY, 1714. FOR EDWARD MINSHULL, ESQ; AGAINST SIR THOMAS STILES, BART. RETURN'D...[caption title]

[London, 1714. Broadsheet, 13 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches. [1]p. plus printed docket title on verso. Dbd. Early folds and early stab holes in left margin. Minor foxing. Very good. A petition to Parliament by Edward Minshull, a parliamentary candidate who argues that his loss to Sir Thomas Stiles in the 1714 Bramber election was the result of illegal voting. Bramber, a small village in West Sussex, was one of the most notorious of the "rotten boroughs," parliamentary constituencies whose representation in the House of Commons far exceeded the appropriate ratio to the voting population, thus allowing one or a few major landholders in the area undue political influence in the government. In 1295, when Bramber was a larger market town, it and the neighboring town of Steyning collectively returned two members of Parliament; by the reign of Edward IV in the 15th century, Bramber and Steyning returned two MP's each, with properties in a part of Bramber that overlapped Steyning theoretically entitled to a vote in each borough. In 1831, a year before the Great Reform Act abolished the rotten boroughs, Bramber contained only thirty-five houses and twenty voters. As this document shows, Bramber was somewhat unusual in that the "Right of Election is in the Inhabitants of the Burgage-Tenements," rather than in the owners, who generally lived elsewhere. The petitioning candidate, Edward Minshull, points out the difficult matter that of the residents of the thirty- two existing tenements, a large number were widows of former tenants and thus unable to vote, leaving very few legal voters in the election. He claims that seven non- inhabitants were called in to vote for Thomas Stiles (three of whom were servants or attendants of one of the landlords) and that four inhabitants supporting himself were refused their votes, creating a false count of seventeen to thirteen in favor of Stiles rather than the true count of ten to seventeen in favor of Minshull. An early example of lobbying literature, which first began proliferating in the lobby of the House of Commons at the time of the accession of King George I and the British general election of 1715. A fascinating case of election abuses and a rare document, with ESTC recording only three copies, at Oxford, the British Library, and Harvard.

Henry Duc des Vandales, histoire véritable

Paris: Pierre Prault, 1714. Rare original edition. 12mo. Contemporary calf, gilt spine. Upper corners restored, spine extremities chipped, joints a bit worn, but a very good and clean copy. Leaf of half title, verso blank; leaf of title, verso blank; 3pp. preface; pp. iv-xxxii Histoire; pp. 1-319 text; 3pp. approbation and privilege; 2pp. ads; engravings opposite pp. 1, 199, 284, 319. Collation: []2, é12, ď2, [1], A-N12, O6. Four engravings by Jean Crépy (Barbier II, 611). Henry Duc des Vandales is an historical novel taken from the “creative” translation by Matteo Bandello (ca. 1480-1562) of Histoires Tragiques by François de Belleforest (1530-1583). There is a 1737 edition of the novel also published by Prault as part of her collected editions. As a novelist, Catherine Durand was relatively popular in her time. Her best known novel is Les Belles Grecques; ou, L’Histoire des plus fameuses courtisanes de la Grčce. Et dialogues nouveaux des galantes modernes (Paris: Saugrain and Prault, 1712). Historian Joan DeJean claims that another novel La Comtesse de Mortane (1699) alone should “guarantee her rescue from oblivion. . .” (23). Almost nothing is known of Catherine Durand. She wrote under Madame D***, Mademoiselle D***, and M. D. [as here]. Durand wrote with an anonymity that leaves her oeuvre difficult to document. We know neither when she was born nor when she got married. It is said that she always used her maiden name Durand (rather than her married name Bédacier) when publishing her works because she had begun her literary career prior to marriage. Most historians agree that women writers of France in the 17th and 18th centuries are overlooked because of a lack of biographical interest from a society that degraded or discouraged the literary abilities of women. DeJean writes, “Basic biographical questions cannot be answered to the point where there is little future of actually studying these women. These realities prevent an accurate picture of the publication history of these women writers. This is a priceless heritage that should not be left largely untapped” (24). DeJean includes Durand in her “roll-call of great, neglected Frenchwomen writers of the long eighteenth century” (24), and Durand is also mentioned as one of the significant novelists at the beginning of that epoch. According to Perry Gethner, “Only one date in Durand’s biography is certain: in 1701 she won the annual poetry prize of the French Academy for an ode praising Louis XIV for displaying both the qualities of a well-bred man of the world and the talents of a king. . . . Her output consists of a small number of short poems, an opera libretto that she deemed unfinished, two sets of works in dialogue form reproducing salon entertainments of the time . . . and a variety of novels, with either historical or contemporary settings. Several of the novels contain fairy tales, a literary form that rose to popularity in France during the final decade of the seventeenth century and of which most of the early practitioners were women active in the salons” (237). Although forgotten now, Durand’s popularity at the time is indicated by the four fine engravings that Prault included in the original edition of Henry Duc des Vandales. Expensive engravings were not often included in novels unless the edition was expected to sell well. The engravings were done by Jean Crépy or Crespy (1680-ca. 1739). Jean Crépy was active as an engraver and publisher at the end of the 17th and beginning of the 18th century on rue St. Jacques a St. Pierre in Paris. His son, Etienne-Louis Crépy (ca. 1700-1759), was also an engraver and publisher, specializing in maps and geographical prints. Another son, Louis, was also active in the publishing trade and specialized in imaginary and optical prints. There are 4 bis figures (+406, *406, +673 and +674); numbers 826, 827 and 828 are printed on one; 2 numbers in the numbering sequence (1076 and 1256) are omitted. Barrelier, a French Dominican doctor who travelled widely through France, Spain and Italy collecting plants and shells on his way, wrote a history of plants entitled either 'Hortus mundi' or 'Orbis botanicus' while in Rome. Tragically the manuscript was lost in a fire, but after his death, the copper-plates which survived were acquired by Jussieu, successor to Tournefort as professor of botany at the Jardin des Plantes, who arranged for their publication and compiled the accompanying text. Antoine de Jussieu, uncle of the renowned Antoine-Laurent Jussieu (1748-1836), was a physician and botanist, who studied medicine at Montpellier, but as early as 1708 he was appointed, "upon the recommendation of Fagon, to succeed the celebrated Tournefort as professor and demonstrator at the Jardin du Roi. By 1711 he was a member of the Academy of Sciences. After making botanical journeys over a large part of France, he explored in 1716 the flora of the Pyrenean peninsula. In addition to his activity as botanist he had a large medical practice, giving much attention to the poor. From 1718 he also made use in his practice of quassia bark (Cortex Simarubæ), the first of which had been sent in 1713 to the Jesuit Father Soleil at Paris from Cayenne. Antoine de Jussieu wrote an account of the bark in the "Mémoires" of the Academy for 1729, and Linnæus named after him the plant Simaruba Jussiæi. The "Mémoires" of the academy also contain papers by Jussieu on human anatomy, zoology, palæontology, and mineralogy. Haller ["Bibliotheca botanica", II (1772)] enumerates twenty botanical papers, of which the "Descriptio et icon Coffeæ (coffee)" of 1713 has historical value. In 1719 he published a new and revised edition, with an appendix, of Tournefort's "Institutiones rei herbariæ" (Joseph Rompel for the Catholic Encyclopedia).
